At the beginning of J.J. Abrams' 2009 sci-fi/action flick "Star Trek," a reboot of the beloved 1966 TV series, a Federation vessel called the U.S.S. Kelvin is attacked by a mysterious Romulan ship that appeared through a portal in space. The Romulan ship, called the Narada, cripples the Kelvin and kills its captain. The Kelvin's first officer, Commander George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) takes command and, in a sacrificial defense measure, pilots the Kelvin on a collision course. In the violence, Commander Kirk's very pregnant wife Winona (Jennifer Morrison) is carried to an escape pod, having gone into labor. Over a communication channel, Jennifer and George bid each other farewell, and settle on a name for their son. She suggests Tiberius. He suggests Jim. The baby James T. Kirk is born as his father dies in a fiery conflagration.

One of the more fantastical elements of J.J. Abrams' 2009 film "Star Trek" is the use of a mysterious, seemingly magical substance called Red Matter.
In the 23rd century, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) used Red Matter to create a black hole in the Romulan star system just as its sun was about to go supernova. The idea was that the black hole would suck up the exploding star like a vacuum cleaner and save the Romulan homeworld. No, the actual astral physics don't many any sense, but this is what they went with.
Spock did suck up the supernova with his black hole, but he was too late to save Romulus. The black hole, it turns out, was also a portal through time, and Spock is sucked in and deposited about a century in the past. Following Spock through the time hole is a bitter Romulan named Nero (Eric Bana), incensed...

I grew up in the dark times, my friends. We were glad when anything comic book related was on movies and TV. We were so desperate that we would make excuses for anything.
Superman III? Hey, he gets to fight an evil Superman.
Generation X? Look they’re in the X-mansion!

But every once in a while someone would get it right. Richard Donner’s Superman started it but it was Tim Burton’s Batman film in 1989 that started to change things. Sure we would eventually get duds like Batman & Robin, but we also had Batman The Animated Series and Blade. Yet for a long time,...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 322 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2015. “It’s gratifying to acknowledge the extraordinary range of talent in our industry,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “This year, our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization.” The 2015 invitees are: Actors Elizabeth Banks – “Love & Mercy,” “The Hunger Games” Choi Min-sik– “Lucy,” “Oldboy” Benedict Cumberbatch – “The Imitation Game,” “Star Trek Into Darkness” Martin Freeman – “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “Hot Fuzz” Heather Graham – “The Hangover,” “Boogie Nights” Tom Hardy – “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Inception” Kevin Hart – “The Wedding Ringer,” “Ride Along...

EW: Tonight’s big reveal was that Caleb is the father of Dylan. Did you all plan that from the start of the series?

A&E's "Bates Motel," from executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin, premieres at 10 p.m. Et on March 18, and prospective viewers would be forgiven for wondering how anyone can pull off a present-day prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's seminal 1960 film, "Psycho." (Read HuffPost TV critic Maureen Ryan's review here.)
Cuse and Ehrin admitted that it was a daunting task, but the veteran producers of two of TV's most influential and critically acclaimed series ("Lost" and "Friday Night Lights, respectively) felt that they were up to the challenge, especially after securing stars Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore as Norma and Norman Bates respectively, the dysfunctional mother/son relationship at the heart of the show.
HuffPost TV sat down with Cuse and Ehrin in January to discuss the development of the high-profile prequel and the attraction of adapting one of cinema's most twisted relationships for the small screen.

As fans view the trailer for Jj Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness, there's a certain excitement generated by seeing the cast returning in their roles as the Enterprise crew - which is a fairly ironic situation considering that prior to the release of the 2009 original, there was great skepticism about anyone assuming the roles made famous by people like William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. Now imagine what it must have been like to be one of the people responsible for finding a new generation of actors to play such iconic characters as Captain James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy. One would imagine that it could have been a situation where a casting director would feel like the proverbial deer in the headlights. "We weren't afraid of it," offers April Webster, who, along with Alyssa Weisberg, was in charge of casting, "but we knew...

Exclusive: Warner Bros TV is exploring casting of key roles in its high-concept drama project from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams. The project, tentatively titled Believe, already has a pilot production commitment. It is not unusual for studios to do preliminary casting work on high-profile projects before a formal green light, especially those with a strong, hard-to-find lead whose casting can make or break a show. Wbtv is doing the same with the lead in its potential Wonder Woman origin series at the CW, Amazon. Directed by Cuarón and written by him and Mark Friedman, Believe is about a girl in possession of a great gift/powers — which will come into their own in seven years– and the man who is sprung from prison to protect her from those trying to hunt her down. The breakdown, released this week by casting director April Webster, is searching for the young lead: 10-year-old Bo,...

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams has been left stunned after discovering a casting assistant on his Super 8 movie has a record as a sex offender.
Police records show Jason James Murphy was convicted of kidnapping and molesting an eight-year-old boy in Washington state 15 years ago.
Abrams recently learned the 35 year old is the same person his casting directors hired as an assistant to the kids on the set.
He tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, "It's shocking and it's devastating, not just as a filmmaker but as a father and someone who is entrusted to make sure that everyone I work with, especially children, are safe. To think that someone like this was among us is unthinkable."
Murphy, who has been using the name Jason James while doing business in Hollywood in recent years, has also worked with young stars on the sets of Bad News Bears, The School of Rock, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and the much-anticipated new movie The Three Stooges.
The Los Angeles Times reports Murphy served five years in prison and underwent counselling as a sex offender. In 2005 he moved to California and registered as a sex offender, but then went to work as Jason James, thus hiding his true identity.
There are no known complaints that Murphy acted inappropriately with any minor in his casting business, but it appears he has broken a number of state laws, which dictate he must notify the authorities to any name changes, nicknames or pseudonyms, and he cannot work directly with children.
Abrams insists there was nothing to suggest the man he knew as Jason James was a child sex offender.
He adds, "(We) had absolutely no knowledge of his real name, nor of his status. He applied for the job under an alias."
Super 8's casting directors, April Webster and Alyssa Weisberg, insist they were unaware of Murphy's background when they hired him as an assistant, but they tell the publication he was never alone with children while in their offices.

One part police procedural, one part mystery thriller, Person Of Interest sees Emerson and Caviezel team up to help stop crimes before they happen.
