In a nondescript conference room in Midtown Manhattan sit Jennifer Weiss and Sonia Ruiz McGraw. Above them are black and white photos that could easily depict their twins: Weiss’ birth mother, Deedeh Goodarzi, who gave her up for adoption in 1978, and McGraw’s grandmother, Lorraine McGraw, whom she’s never met. Weiss’ mother was a victim of Richard Cottingham, a.k.a. the Torso Killer. McGraw says her grandmother was, too.

Exclusive: Maddie Ziegler and Schitt’s Creek Star Emily Hampshire are to lead Bloody Hell, a coming-of-age “traumedy” from Mary Goes Round director Molly McGlynn.
Principal photography kicked off in Canada last week on the feature, which follows 16-year-old Lindy (Ziegler), who is unexpectedly diagnosed with a reproductive condition that upends her plans to have sex, presumptions about womanhood and relationship with her mother (Hampshire).
The film is semi-autobiographical for McGlynn, who was diagnosed with Mrkh Syndrome when she was 16. She was subsequently behind critically-acclaimed 2017 feature Mary Goes Round and has helmed episodes of the likes of Grace and Frankie and Bless this Mess.
“It took me several years to scrape together the courage to write this script,” said McGlynn. “I knew Maddie was the perfect person to capture the nuance and complexity of this confusing, emotionally overwhelming and in hindsight, absurd, time in my adolescent life.”

Jennifer Weiss says her life came full-circle in a massive, dreary building in Trenton, New Jersey. In May of 1978, her mother, Deedeh Goodarzi, put her up for adoption at an agency in the shadow of the New Jersey State Prison and its barbed-wire crowned fences. Decades later, she found herself at that same prison, confronting the man who had left her mother dismembered in a flaming hotel room in Times Square: Richard Cottingham, a.k.a. the Torso Killer, a man whose brutality towards his victims shocked even the most seasoned of cops.

The enterprising Us outfit, which acquired the film in partnership with DirecTV and plans to release this fall, brokered the deal with Wme on behalf of eOne and the filmmakers.

The Captive
Director: Atom Egoyan
Writers: Atom Egoyan, David Fraser
Producers: Simone Urdl, Jennifer Weiss, Stephen Traynor, Atom Egoyan
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson
While we were a bit disappointed in Egoyan’s 2013 offering, Devil’s Knot, which managed to hit all the rote clichés of an unnecessary and glamorized reenactment of a rather well documented criminal case, we’re holding onto hope for this latest effort, a glossy looking thriller starring some Egoyan regulars (Bruce Greenwood, Speedman) and some American matinee presence. It seems 2009′s Chloe marked a major turning point for Egoyan, whose independent films once had a distinct tone and attitude. While Chloe was a remake of an Anne Fontaine film and Knot was based on actual events, we’re thinking Egoyan has less pressure facing this venture as there shouldn’t be so much weighted preconception. We’re not crazy about the new title,...

Perhaps not as sturdy or as developed as it is with Cannes or Tiff, Atom Egoyan’s relationship with Sundance remains a good one when you double his output of films directed (Next of Kin and Exotica) with films that he exec-produced in The Saddest Music in the World and Away From Her. Formerly going by the title of “Queen of the Night,” The Captive features Ryan Reynolds, Egoyan lucky charm Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, Alexia Fast and the almost always dependable Bruce Greenwood in what should be some welcome genre diversion at the fest and one that will make us forget about the poorly executed Devil’s Knot.

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing. This February we’ve got a slew of projects that we feel are worth signaling out: we start with a sequel (and pictured above) we find The Raid 2 (also known as Berandal) which has set up shop with the same producing team, star player and writer/director Gareth Huw Evans. Sony Pictures Classics backed the film prior to production. This picks up two hours after the first installment ends.
We have the highly touted Black List screenplay that could very well place itself in the fall festival releases in David O. Russell’s adaptation of American Bullshit – a film we imagine will be much talked about because of its cast (Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Louis C.K.) and the plotline (an FBI sting...

At some point in the not too distant future, Ryan Reynolds will be facing down hordes of sword-wielding immortals in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Highlander remake. Before he heads to Scotland, however, Reynolds is off to Canada to star in Atom Egoyan's Queen Of The Night. No, it's not an entire film based on a Whitney Houston song or an operatic character. The details are scarce at this point, but the film is apparently a kidnap thriller in which Reynolds will play the father of an abducted child. Don't expect much in the way of clock-ticking revenge action though: Egoyan's films (like Calendar, Exotica, Ararat and Adoration) tend to be more cerebral than that.Egoyan, as usual, has co-written the screenplay, and will produce the indie thriller along with Simone Urdl, Jennifer Weiss and Stephen Traynor. He's currently still hard at work on The Devil's Knot, his dramatisation of...

Yeah, we know. We're as surprised as you are. The last we hard about French filmmaker Laurent Cantet's adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' "Foxfire" was when it was announced over a year ago. We were excited by the prospect of the director behind the fantastic Palme d'Or-winning "The Class" as well as "Time Out" and "Human Resources taking on the tale that has most famously already hit the screen in a version starring Angelina Jolie and Jenny Lewis. Well, lo and behold, this thing already went in front of cameras last summer. And with some additional photography now underway in Peterborough, Ontario in Canada, producers Jennifer Weiss and Simone Urdl have revealed to the Peterborough Examiner that the film is being prepped for a bow at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall. "Foxfire" follows the story of a group of headstrong, adolescent girls who grow up amidst violence and frustration in.

Toronto -- Sarah Polley's heart just isn't in it. The Canadian actress-turned-director on Tuesday withdrew her name from "The Heart," a two-minute film she shot on female cardiac health to air this Sunday on Canadian broadcaster CTV's nationwide telecast of the Academy Awards.
Polley said she pulled her credit from the Oscar short after she learned that the project from Canada's Heart and Stroke Foundation might indirectly market the Unilever brand margarine Becel.
"In December 2009, I made a film to be aired during the Academy Awards that I believed was to promote the Heart and Stroke Foundation," Polley said in a statement Tuesday.
Polley said she was initially thrilled to be associated with a film for the medical research charity. But her anti-corporate radar was raised when Polley learned that Becel commissioned the short.
"I have since learned that my film is also being used to promote a product.

London-based indie distributor Optimum, now owned by Canal Plus, snared U.K. rights to Brian De Palma's Iraq War thriller Redacted from New York-based producer and broadcaster HDNet Films.
The Brit company also snaffled U.K. rights to Alex Gibney's documentary Hunter S. Thompson about the cult hero gonzo journalist.
De Palma's movie recounts the story of a group of American soldiers stationed in Iraq and is produced by HDNet Films co-presidents Jason Kliot and Joana Vicente, along with The Film Farm's Simone Urdl and Jennifer Weiss. The film is currently in pre-production and will start shooting in April, HDNet said.
Thompson is billed as the first documentary to examine the life of Thompson. Directed by Gibney ("Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room") and produced by HDNet Films Kliot and Vicente with Graydon Carter, the film aims to draw on over 200 hours of home movie and documentary footage that Thompson's family granted the filmmakers.
"Both films will give audiences an exciting new perspective on a talented artist," Optimum managing director Will Clarke said.

After years of studio projects, Brian De Palma’s next will be distribed by one of the indie studios. Magnolia Pictures will release the pic day-and-date next fall in theaters. The project that reminds me of Roberto Rossellini 1946’s Paisà (Paisan) is called Redacted. This will be a montage of stories about U.S. soldiers fighting in the conflict and this includes one that looks at the rape and murder of a 14-year old Iraqi girl, and the killing of three of her family members by four Us soldiers. The soldiers were sleep-deprived and living on energy drinks and sleeping pills in a situation where anyone outside the fence was considered the enemy. The killings have been the most provocative in a series of war crimes that have
