After winning her inaugural Emmy on her first try in 2015 for directing the HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge,” Lisa Cholodenko looks to return to the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Directing lineup for Netflix’s “Unbelievable.” She helmed the first three episodes, of which she chose the opener to enter at the Emmys.
The premiere centers on Kaitlyn Dever’s Marie Adler, an 18-year-old who reports being raped at knifepoint to the local police station in Lynnwood, Washington. The story is told through Marie’s eyes, through which the world becomes cold and bleak as she grapples with trauma, all while being confronted with inklings of doubt from the people around her. With her grounded direction and tight collaboration with cinematographer Quyen Tran (who uses a veristic color palette throughout), Cholodenko crafts an uber-realistic atmosphere, which not only sets the tone for the show, but is a pivotal step toward immersing viewers into Marie’s situation.

American Cinema Editors (Ace) today announced nominations for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in ten categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Friday, January 30, 2015 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Next week Ace will announce the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honoree and two Career Achievement honorees.
For only the second time in the organization’s history, a tie resulted in an additional nominee in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category creating six nominees, instead of five, indicating a tie in the number of votes for the fifth placing films. In 2013, a tie in the Best Edited Animated Feature Film resulted in four nominees, instead of the normal three nominees, in that category.

The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

The movie that stitched 12 years of footage into a single narrative, “Boyhood,” has been nominated by the American Cinema Editors as the best-edited dramatic feature of 2014, Ace announced on Friday.
Other nominees for the top dramatic film honor at the awards known as the Ace/Eddies are “American Sniper,” “Gone Girl,” “The Imitation Game,” “Nightcrawler” and “Whiplash.” The category had six nominees instead of five because of a tie.

If you were looking for things to be shaken up a little bit in this year's Oscar race, the American Cinema Editors (Ace) offered a slight jolt Friday with the organization's 65th annual list of nominees for film editing. And if you were wondering if "Nightcrawler" might make a serious play on the circuit, well… I will say I was wondering that. So much so that I had a piece prepped focusing on its potential before today's announcement, which included the film in a dramatic feature category that featured a tie for the first time ever. (The animated field saw a tie yielding four nominees in 2012, while "Babel" and "The Departed" actually tied for the dramatic win in 2006, but there hasn't been a tie leading to an extra nominee in the dramatic or comedy/musical categories before.) Powerhouse Oscar players "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" unsurprisingly joined the party, and ditto Sundance hit "Whiplash.

Venice - My goodness, but "Olive Kitteridge" makes creating great TV look as simple as following a recipe. Let's say you want to create a truly wonderful miniseries. A good place to start would be picking great source material that nevertheless comes without too much cultural baggage or a mouthy fandom. An excellent and recent Pulitzer winning novel by Elizabeth Strout would seem to fit the bill. You want great performances? Easy, let's employ some great leads. Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins, Bill Murray and Zoe Kazan should do for starters. Oh, you want great support too? Fine, simply round out the cast with the likes of Peter Mullan, John Gallagher Jr. and Brady Corbet. Of course you'll need a director. Apparently Lisa Cholodenko of "The Kids Are All Right" fame is free. Perfect. Jeffrey M. Werner, the editor Cholodenko worked with on that self same film, is available too. And for your cinematographer,...

"The Social Network" editors, Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter, won the Ace Eddie Award for Best Edited Dramatic Feature at the 61st Annual Ace Eddie Awards. The David Fincher film beat "Black Swan," "The Fighter," "Inception," and "The King's Speech." We'll see if "The Social Network" will beat those movies (except for "Inception" which was not nominated in favor of "127 Hours") at the upcoming 83rd Academy Awards.
In the feature category for Musical or Comedy, Chris Lebenzon of "Alice in Wonderland" took home the trophy, winning over "Easy A," "The Kids Are All Right," "Made in Dagenham," and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World."
In the Best Edited Animated Featuer Film category, surprise, surprise, "Toy Story 3" won over "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Despicable Me."
Tom Fulford & Chris King of "Exit Through the Gift Shop" won for Best Edited Documentary beating "Inside Job" and "Waiting for Superman."

Another feather is now in the cap of David Fincher's The Social Network and this is a big one as the American Cinema Editors have awarded it and its editing team, consisting of Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall, top honors in the drama category. Network beat out fellow nominees Black Swan (Andrew Weisblum), The Fighter (Pamela Martin), Inception (Lee Smith) and The King's Speech (Tariq Anwar). As for the Oscar nominations, by comparison, the only difference in nominees is 127 Hours was nominated rather than Inception.

Front-runner for most overlooked/under-appreciated category of filmmaking is editing. A well-edited film goes unnoticed amongst the majority of filmgoers (Black Swan, How To Train Your Dragon), while sometimes the game-changing editing sticks out (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Social Network), and then poor editing can further ruin a stinker (Iron Man 2, The Last Airbender).
Along with the Oscar nominations, each year the American Cinema Editors (Ace) aim to reward the best editing with the Ace Eddie Awards. Deadline notes that Christopher Nolan will receive the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award and that “no film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981.” This year, the nominees have been revealed and you can see them below.

Recent winners of the American Cinema Editors (Ace) Eddie Awards for best film editing have gone to The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, The Departed, Crash, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Chicago and Gladiator. I think you get my drift, but if not six out of the last ten films to win the Eddie in the Best Feature Film (Dramatic) category have gone on to win Oscar's Best Picture and I think we can call it seven out of eleven at this point as it doesn't really matter what film you believe is going to win Best Picture, it's likely among this group.
