Galle, April 23 (Ians) Ireland spin bowling coach Nathan Hauritz is backing his slow bowlers to produce an improved performance in the second Test against Sri Lanka starting here on Monday.
Last week’s first Test was a one-sided affair as four Sri Lanka batters scored centuries and Ireland’s spinners struggled to adjust to the conditions as the hosts cruised to an emphatic innings and 280-run victory.
But Hauritz is confident Ireland will be more competitive when the second and final Test of the series commences on Monday, especially if his team has some luck at the toss and gets the chance to bat first.
“If we get the opportunity to bat first and put a good score on the board I’ll back our spinners to create problems and it will be interesting to see how their (Sri Lanka) batters play against us. But bowling first in these conditions...

1st Test: Karunaratne, Mendis centuries help Sri Lanka take charge despite late wickets from Ireland
Galle, April 16 (Ians) Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis scored centuries as Sri Lanka piled on 386/4 at stumps on day one of first Test against Ireland at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, here on Sunday.
The 281-run partnership for the second wicket between Karunaratne, who made 179 and Mendis, who struck 140, was the nucleus of Sri Lanka taking charge though Ireland fought back with two late scalps at the end of the day.
At the fag end of the day’s play, Mendis and then Angelo Mathews fell within three overs of each other. Mathews only lasted three balls before taking a wild swipe at a delivery from Ben White, out for his fifth Test match duck.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had started positively early in the day, racing to 40 after the first ten overs of the Test. With minimal assistance in the pitch for the seamers, Mark Adair was into the attack...

Dhaka, April 7 (Ians) On the back of wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim’s 51 not out, Bangladesh put a halt to Ireland’s fightback in the one-off Test by securing a seven-wicket win in the second session of day four’s play at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Ireland made 259 for the loss of just four wickets on day three, recovering from 27/4 to spark hopes of an unlikely triumph. Andy McBrine was key to their hopes overnight, resuming unbeaten on 71 having entered at 123/6.
However, he was only able to add one to his overnight score on day four, with Ireland losing two wickets for six runs. Ebadot Hossain did the damage, sending McBrine’s off-stump cartwheeling before nicking off Graham Hume as Ireland made 292 in their second innings.
That left Bangladesh needing 138 to win. Litton Das hit 23 off 19 before becoming the first wicket to fall, a sharp bouncer from Mark Adair...

Dublin, April 3 (Ians) Opener Paul Stirling is set to join Ireland’s Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka and will be available for selection for the second Test to be played in Galle from April 24-28. Stirling’s addition makes Ireland’s travelling squad a 16-player party for the second game of the two-Test series.
Ireland’s tour to Sri Lanka was initially supposed to consist of one Test and two ODIs. But the hosts’ quest to get more red-ball matches meant the two ODIs got converted into an extra Test match. Both the Tests will be played in Galle between April 16 and 28.
“Paul was originally set to join the squad in Sri Lanka for the Odi series that was originally planned. However, with those fixtures now converted to a Test match, and the scheduled Bangladesh T20I series in Ireland postponed, he will now have a greater...

London, April 2 (Ians) Manchester City kept their calm after falling behind, to roar back and beat Liverpool 4-1 in a result that very much keeps them in the race for the Premier League title.
Although Mohamed Salah poached a goal for Liverpool in the 17th minute, Julian Alvarez, who was in the side for injured Erling Haaland, levelled 10 minutes later and then helped Riyad Mahrez set up Kevin de Bruyne to put City ahead in the first minute of the second half.
Ilkay Gundogan then put the result beyond doubt when he made it 3-1 in the 53rd minute after Alvarez’s shot had been blocked and the impressive Jack Grealish got the goal he deserved in the 74th minute after exchanging passes with De Bruyne.
“When we conceded the goal, we were playing really well. Of course, they are always a threat in the transitions, but we played really well in all departments.

Chattogram, March 26 (Ians) Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie will be rested for his team’s T20I series against Bangladesh starting from Monday and opener Paul Stirling will step into the role, Cricket Ireland said on Sunday.
“Andrew was due to take a break from the Odi series against Sri Lanka next month to concentrate on preparation for the upcoming Tests and the all-important World Cup Super League series in May.
With the Sri Lankan Odi series now being converted to a second Test Match, he will now be rested from this T20I series instead,” said head coach Heinrich Malan in a press conference.
Stirling has captained Ireland six times in T20Is in the past and has been vice-captain of Ireland team since 2019. With Balbirnie now rested, and Stirling stepping in, Lorcan Tucker will act as vice-captain for the series against Bangladesh.

London, March 5 (Ians) Arsenal retained their five point lead at the top of the Premier League in dramatic fashion following a second half fightback and a late winning goal at home over Bournemouth.
The Gunners kicked off the match after their lead was narrowed to just two points with Manchester City winning 2-0 at home over Newcastle United in the Saturday’s early kick-off.
Phil Foden, who seems to be firmly back in favor at the Etihad Stadium, put Pep Guardiola’s men in front after 15 minutes, before Bernardo Silva scored City’s second in the 67th minute with a neat finish shortly after coming on as a substitute, a Xinhua report said.
Arsenal got off to a dreadful start when Phillip Billing put Bournemouth ahead in the first 10 seconds of their match.

London, Feb 26 (Ians) Gabriel Martinelli’s goal at the start of the second half gave Arsenal a 1-0 win away to Leicester City, which was probably easier than the final score suggests.
Martinelli latched onto Leandro Trossard’s through ball to beat Danny Ward, which will have been some consolation to Trossard after the midfielder had a spectacular first-half goal disallowed after a Var review, due to a foul on the Leicester keeper, by Ben White.
Once Arsenal got ahead, they were able to control the play and held into their lead with few problems.
Manchester City remain two points behind in the second after an easy 4-1 win away to Bournemouth.
Julian Alvarez on 15 minutes, Erling Haaland on 29 minutes and Phil Foden on the stroke of halftime put Pep Guardiola’s side 3-0 up at the break, with Alvarez and Foden both answering doubts over why they haven’t started recently.

London, Oct 23 (Ians) Granit Xhaka’s first-half goal went in vain as Arsenal stumbled to a 1-1 draw at Southampton, creating an opportunity for teams to inch closer to the Premier League leaders.
Xhaka netted his fourth goal of the season, sweetly connecting with Ben White’s cross, to give us an early lead. But the Saints were much improved after the interval, drawing level through Stuart Armstrong’s first goal of the season on 65 minutes, as the hosts took the game to Arsenal.
Arsenal went into the match with a one-point lead over second-placed Manchester City, who had reduced the margin with a win on Saturday. Sunday’s draw left them two points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side, who had a chance of overtaking the Gunners in case they falter again.

George Soros is a former hedge fund investor who has spent billions of his fortune on philanthropic causes. But to many conservatives, the frequent Democratic donor is a sinister liberal puppet-master who has funded everything from the protests surrounding Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation to the migrant caravan currently making its way through Mexico to the southern border. Though there is no evidence Soros has any connection to the caravan, on Monday an explosive device was found in the mailbox of his home in Bedford, New York. “An employee...

Titling a film is no trivial matter, especially from a marketing perspective. As history has proven, there have been numerous films made which have little more to offer than a cracking title. A really sharp one can help sell the poorest product, conversely a stellar piece of movie-making can be undermined by something uninspired. When you're trying to make your movie stand out in a marketplace awash with alternatives, an attention-grabbing title is a crucial consideration and you'll probably be aiming for something that harbours intrigue, allure, and is capable of fostering curiosity and anticipation. When it was first unleashed theatrically in 1985, Howling II: Stirba – Werewolf Bitch was certainly an attention-grabber. Whether the film itself turned out to be good, bad or indifferent, as enticing titles go the suffix Stirba – Werewolf Bitch sure did the job, sending out a premium come and see me you know you...

Can President Trump handle the truth? Can Twitter handle President Trump’s new interview about the truth?
In its latest issue, Time published an interview with Trump with a cover that reads “Is Truth Dead?” In the story, Trump talks about his own statements that have made headlines, his ability to sell magazines, wiretapping allegations, and more.
And Twitter had a lot to say about it. Most of it wasn’t positive.
@costareports @Fahrenthold @michaelscherer The interview was like the ramblings of a bar drunk at 3 am in the morning.,

Monday night's presidential debate left many Americans most conflicted not about whether Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton prevailed, but about the effectiveness of moderator Lester Holt, who was relatively silent throughout the political face-off. Although Holt interrupted the candidates at times to fact-check their statements and remind them of their time limits, he also allowed their heated discussions of policy and values to go largely unchaperoned. While some debate viewers took to social media to praise the NBC anchor for staying out of the spotlight, others wondered why he abstained from cutting off Clinton and Trump more often. And those viewers vented through memes.

Welcome to the March 27, 2015 edition of Outrage Watch, HitFix's (almost) daily rundown of all the things folks are peeved about in entertainment. Today's top story: "Get Hard" is getting slammed. The Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart prison preparedness comedy has been dogged by controversy since its SXSW premiere, when an audience member asked Hart, Ferrell and director Etan Cohen, "Were you nervous -- and/or how nervous were you -- presenting this in front of a live audience being completely, absolutely and unapologetically ... racist and hysterical at the same time?" during an audience Q&A. Not only that, but it's been deemed homophobic by a number of critics and journalists, and our own Drew McWeeny had this to say in his review: "I just couldn't bring myself to laugh at something that will reinforce hatred, that plays into this idea that gay sex is somehow inherently more disgusting than regular sex.

Howling II: … Your Sister Is a Werewolf
Written by Robert Sarno, Gary Brandner
Directed by Philippe Mora
USA, 1985
If you couldn’t tell from the ridiculous title, Howling II: … Your Sister is a Werewolf is quite a bizarre film. Blending together the myths of Lycans and vampires to craft a profoundly confusing feature.
Starting off with a brief Christopher Lee intro then picking up immediately after the events of the first Howling. For those who are unfamiliar with that film let’s just summarize it as a female reporter, Karen White, who discovers a community of werewolves, gets bitten and then transforms on live TV to expose the world to the werewolf threat. It seems that somehow this broadcast was cutoff and covered up so the film takes place in a world still ignorant of the lycan existence. At the funeral of said reporter we are introduced to her brother...

I’m sure you already remember our previous report about the upcoming indie comedy titled 10 Things I Hate About Life. The movie already stars Evan Rachel Wood, Janet Montgomery and Thomas McDonnell, and today we’re here to add another great name to that list ’cause we’ve just learned that Billy Campbell has joined the project as well!
So, as you already know, the movie (currently shooting in Los Angeles) comes from director Gil Junger, and follows a young woman (Wood) and man (McDonnell) who meet while attempting to commit suicide at the same jumping-off point.
But, apparently, that’s just the beginning of the story and things get complicated when the McDonnell’s ex-girlfriend re-enters his life just as his budding rock band is on the verge of signing a record deal.
On the other hand, Billy Campbell jumps in to play McDonnell’s father, a wealthy and entitled lawyer,...

Just days after a big CES outing, EchoStar chairman and CEO Charles Ergen is losing a whole executive suite of tech vision.
The founders of Sling Media and three other top executives told their staff Monday that they are leaving the digital media firm that became famous with its Slingbox, which allows users to "place shift" TV content.
Ergen's EchoStar bought Sling Media for $380 million in cash in September 2007 and kept founding brothers Blake and Jason Krikorian on board as CEO and senior vp business development, respectively.
Also leaving is former MTV Networks chief digital officer Jason Hirschhorn, who has been in charge of the Sling Media Entertainment unit. He will help with the transition until the end of February.
