With her thousand-watt smile and wild mane of curly hair, Julia Roberts has an effervescence that is unmatched. Roger Ebert once described her as "an actress with a winning way; we like her, feel protective toward her, want her to prevail." She has a natural luminosity that conjures an unforgettable and commanding on-screen presence. Roberts quickly rose to fame after her role in "Mystic Pizza" in 1988. Throughout the 1990s and into the millennium, she became one of the most celebrated female actors and a bona fide movie star.
While she is often associated with romantic comedies, Julia Roberts has also tackled many intense roles. She has earned four Academy Award nominations and won for "Erin Brockovich," which also established her as one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors. ‘Leo’ Review: Adam Sandler Plays a Literal Teacher’s Pet in Winning Toon From the ‘TV Funhouse’ Team
“Perhaps if people talked less, animals would talk more,” observes one of the human characters in “Charlotte’s Web,” a kiddie classic that serves as both the butt of several jokes and an inspiration for Adam Sandler’s animated “Leo,” an endearing Netflix original that strikes just the right balance between heart and fart jokes.
Basing the way Leo sounds on his squeaky-scratchy, slightly guttural impression of the late Hollywood agent Bernie Brillstein, Sandler voices a crusty old iguana who’s spent three-quarters of a century — practically his entire life — trapped in an elementary school classroom. Leo’s wisdom is largely limited to what’s taught in fifth grade, though he’s observed enough kids over his 74 years that the lizard reckons he’s qualified to advise this crop. Truth be told, he’s cheaper and more consistently helpful than your typical child psychologist.

Roger Angell, whose vivid essays about baseball in The New Yorker saw him enshrined in a special writers wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., has died. He was 101 and died of heart failure, according to New Yorker editor David Remnick.
“No one lives forever, but you’d be forgiven for thinking that Roger had a good shot at it,” Remnick wrote Friday. “Like the rest of us, he suffered pain and loss and doubt, but he usually kept the blues at bay, always looking forward; he kept writing, reading, memorizing new poems, forming new relationships.”
Angell was the son of founding New Yorker fiction editor Katharine White and stepson of longtime staff writer E.B. White. He was first published in the magazine in his 20s, during World War II, and was still contributing in his 90s.

Fivio Foreign makes everything, even a threat, sound like a joyful improvisation. He’s loose (and jovial) with it, demanding, on his 2020 hit, “Big Drip,” “Send me the addy, I’m hunting him down,” as if his opps were brand new acquaintances he’s already sending NBA2K invites to. (By comparison, his late contemporary Pop Smoke, for all his gruff charm, was precise and threatening.) Fivio’s knack for delivering stick talk like it’s an impossible-to-turn-down elevator pitch, had made him Brooklyn drill’s leading spokesperson.

This “Jeopardy!” champion just earned his first Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album. Who is…Ken Jennings.

Upon learning he was nominated though, Jennings was surprised at the recognition and wondered why Trebek himself hadn’t been nominated instead.
“Wait, what?” Jennings said in a tweet. “This should 100% be Alex’s Grammy nomination. He wrote the book and reads much of the audiobook! Who do I speak to about this?”
But Jennings will have some stiff competition. He goes up against Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea for his memoir “Acid For the Children,...

Amazon has thrown families a huge benefit during the coronavirus pandemic by making a lot of their children’s content (Amazon Originals and licensed shows) available for free, even for families that don’t have a Prime membership. Most of what’s there is series programming, which Amazon excels at offering. For families with Amazon Prime, however, there are definitely some family friendly movies to watch, although those are in shorter supply than the more extensive episodic programs. Many of the films that are available are classics parents will remember from their own childhoods, so if you’re trying to figure out what to watch with your kids on Amazon Prime, here are some of our suggestions on family friendly movies.

Some were bemused earlier this month when Joaquin Phoenix used his entirely expected Oscar win as a less predictable occasion for an impassioned animal-rights plea: It was certainly the first time bovine artificial insemination had been discussed amid the glitter and glistening tears of Hollywood’s biggest night. What we didn’t know, however, was how neatly the actor’s speech would dovetail into his next screen credit: as an executive producer on Victor Kossakovsky’s simple but entirely astonishing documentary “Gunda.” It’s not hard to imagine his words as the unspoken subtext to this wholly dialogue-free animal character study, in which an enormous sow on a Norwegian farmyard embarks on an emotive arc of motherhood without any need for human voiceover or twee anthropomorphism: just the still, searching power of an attentive camera.

It’s a sure bet that one reviewer’s high praise is another reviewer’s overpraise. So I fully own the subjective nature of this list. Nevertheless, as a film critic who sort of believes in objective reality (it’s a hard job to do if you don’t), I compiled this roster of movies I think got far too much love from my critical colleagues because, I suspect, I may not be alone. The films, by definition of their being here, have their avid fans and defenders. But maybe they’ve got their detractors, too. At any rate, they’ve certainly had their praises sung, so I figured it was time to toss a few rasberries into the bouquet of hosannas.

The farm that inspired E.B. White's classic children's novel, "Charlotte's Web," has hit the market, and looks to be a great deal. The 44-acre saltwater farm in Brooklin, Maine -- where White lived when he wrote 'Charlotte' -- has been listed at $3.7 million. Not bad for all that land. [Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Rick and Morty” Season 3, Episode 2, “Rickmancing the Stone.”]
When “Rick and Morty” premiered back in April with a surprise episode that only a small group of marketing people at Adult Swim knew was coming, it treated fans who had waited since the end of Season 2 with an episode that mainly delivered on some greatest hits. Aliens had captured Rick, hellbent on stealing a secret from his subconscious. Meanwhile, life back on Earth had descended into total chaos. The last shot was even a mirror of the “100 years Rick and Morty” monologue from the end of the show’s pilot.
So how do you follow that up and get audiences excited for what the rest of Season 3 has to offer? Apparently the answer is Badass Summer. It took descending into an all-out “Mad Max: Fury Road” battle for wasteland supremacy, but it looks like the show’s central duo now has a capable third member.

Sony Pictures Imageworks, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is unique in Hollywood as the only studio-run visual effects and animation division. Formed in 1992 (now headquartered in Vancouver), Imageworks alternates between live-action/CG hybrids and animation with its younger sister, Sony Pictures Animation, which was founded in 2002.
Imageworks has won two Oscars (“Spider-Man 2” VFX and “The ChubbChubbs!” animated short) along with an Academy Sci-Tech award this year for an advanced shading program. But Imageworks first cut its teeth on “Speed,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Jumanji,” “Starship Troopers,” and “Contact” before tackling “Stuart Little” in 1999, the first-cg-animated character to star in a live-action feature.
Since then, Imageworks spear-headed performance capture-based virtual production with director Robert Zemeckis (“Polar Express,” “Monster House”), and has continued to work on franchises including “Spider-Man” (“Homecoming” opens this week), “The Smurfs,” and “Hotel Transylvania.”

[…] Was one to believe that there was nowhere a god of hogs, to whom this hog personality was precious, to whom these hog squeals and agonies had a meaning? Who would take this hog into his arms and comfort him, reward him for his work well done, and show him the meaning of his sacrifice?—Upton Sinclair, The Jungle (1906)1Regarding The Jungle, the socialist author Upton Sinclair remarked that although he’d meant to “aim for the public’s heart,” he’d accidentally “hit it in the stomach.” The novel, about the life of a Lithuanian meat packer in Chicago, was treated with shock and mortification. But the public’s disgust was largely in response to Sinclair’s reports of dirtied meat products, not the plight of the working class. The subsequent frenzy only further undermined the novel’s critique of capitalism, which was ultimately reduced to a matter of meat and hygiene.

A multi-talented star who fixed her place in the Hollywood firmaments when she was just 19 years old (the same age that her daughter, the late Carrie Fisher, was introduced to the world as Princess Leia), Reynolds’ life was the stuff of Tinseltown legend, and she never seemed to grow tired of the spotlight. On the contrary, she was a force of nature until the bitter end, brightening almost every corner of showbiz at one point or another during her decades on stage and screen.

Debbie Reynolds, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84, was one of the last icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Throughout her nearly seven decade career, Reynolds made a name for herself as a triple-threat singer, dancer, and actor — with roles in big-screen MGM musicals and Broadway shows. She was also chart-topping recording artist and dynamic live performer, who toured the country for years as a night club entertainer.
Music was an inescapable part of Reynolds career. Here are 11 of her best musical moments.

Tfe is celebrating the three Honorary Oscar winners this week. Here's Tim discussing Debbie Reynolds' first time as voice actor in an animated feature.
Celebrity voice casting in animated films are older than you'd probably think, and usually as bad you'd probably expect. But sometimes, it works out well enough; sometimes, in fact, it turns into stone-cold classic cinema, as happened the first time Debbie Reynolds lent her voice to an animated feature. The film was Charlotte's Web from 1973, adapted from E.B. White's great 1952 children's book by Hanna-Barbera, the nation's leader in dismal television animation in the '60s and '70s. Ah, but Charlotte's Web is the exception: the handsomest and most emotionally rich thing Hanna-Barbera ever made by far, and Reynolds is the primary reason for that emotional richness.
She plays the title character, Charlotte A. Cavatica, a barn spider. Should I assume you've all read Charlotte's Web?...

Adorable cartoon mouse "Stuart Little" is making a comeback it seems with Sony Pictures and Red Wagon Entertainment reportedly developing a reboot of the franchise.
The new film is said to be less of a remake and more of a whole new adaptation of E.B. White's 1945 novel and will adopt a more mature tone said to be akin to a classic 1980s John Hughes movie. How much of the source material will be altered is unclear.
It is expected the film, like the original 1999 film adaptation, will again be a mix of live-action and computer animation in its telling of the story of the mouse and his adoption by a human family called the Littles.
Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie, Michael J. Fox and Jonathan Lipnicki starred in the original and its 2002 sequel along with lending their voices to the direct-to-video animated third film in 2006. Douglas Wick will reportedly produce.

In 1955, Truman Capote — already a successful writer, but not yet a household name — rented a basement apartment at 70 Willow Street in Brooklyn Heights. He loved the neighborhood and stayed there for a decade, writing Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood there. He also produced an essay, "Brooklyn: A Personal Memoir," published in the February 1959 issue of the great, stylish mid-century travel magazine Holiday. (That monthly is probably best remembered for another essay about this city, E.B. White's "Here Is New York," which first ran there in 1947.) Capote's essay is a florid but charming look at his eclectic neighbors, one that takes a dark turn at the end when he's menaced by a group of young toughs on the street and has to flee. It may be the best appreciation of middle-class Brooklyn life since that other Heights resident Walt Whitman's; its opening line, "I...

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…
Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities, 1859
The other day two grandmothers, Mindy and Lynette, were visiting their beloved grandchild Meyer Manual. After playing and cooing and aahing and watching Alixandra attempt to feed him mashed bananas, 99% of which ended up on his bib and his chin and my elbow and just about everywhere but in his mouth, Lynette said she had to split. As she was leaving, she said to me, “I love your columns. You’re such a good writer.” (Be that as it may.) I said, “I don’t know where it comes from, I never had any formal training.” Lynette laughed, and said, “Well, I had formal training, and I can’t write like that.”
Well, I don’t know how good a writer I am; I always think I could be a gazillion-million times better.

Editor's note: This review is part of Indiewire's coverage from the Los Angeles Film Festival. "I'm So Excited" will be released in theaters on June 28. Over the course of 30 years, Pedro Almodóvar's movies have been kinky, strange, melodramatic and entertaining often in the best of ways, but "I'm So Excited" delivers all those ingredients gone wrong. The director's campy airborne sex romp is exactly that -- a gleefully over-the-top celebration of silliness too in love with its outrageous characters and premise to make them gel. Scene after scene features a self-satisfied kookiness akin to spending time with a terrible comic unwilling to give up the mic. There's that famous E.B. White quote about analyzing comedy being akin to dissecting a frog -- "you understand it better but the frog dies in the process" -- but Almodóvar's movies are themselves typically deconstructive so the mandate need not apply here. Though...

Could iDreamBooks, a new review aggregation site, be the Rotten Tomatoes for books?
Determining what to read can be tricky, and we each have our go-to methods: Scouring the new release shelves at stores, consulting The New York Times' bestseller list, clicking "You May Also Like" suggestions on Amazon.
Word-of-mouth recommendations reign supreme, as evidenced by "50 Shades of Grey"'s sudden surge of sales before the book was even sold to a major publisher. This phenomenon seems less common in the film industry, possibly because movie reviews are easier to quantify. There are star ratings and the easy-to-consult site, Rotten Tomatoes, to guide viewers towards the most critically acclaimed flicks.
iDreamBooks, a site openly inspired by Rotten Tomatoes, has created a system that aims to aggregate and streamline book reviews, giving new releases from the big six publishers (Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, Random House, and Simon & Schuster) a percentage rating.

Kim's stepfather, Bruce Jenner, threw a spider at her to see what would happen. Cue hysterical screaming as Kim ran through the house trying to escape the arachnid.
Later on, however, she managed to calm down and even acquired two small pet spiders, which she named Wilbur and Charlotte in a nod to E.B. White's classic tale, "Charlotte's Web."

Charlotte's Web, E.B. White's classic novel about a farmyard spider and her pig pal, has topped a new list of the 100 Greatest Books for Kids.
Scholastic Parent & Child magazine ranks the 60-year-old book at number one, ahead of Margaret Wise Brown's popular picture book Goodnight Moon.
J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter debut, The Sorcerer's Stone, which represents the hit seven-book series, is sixth on the list.
Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham also makes the top 10 at seven.
Suzanne Collins' bestseller The Hunger Games, which is currently being turned into a summer blockbuster, was 33rd on the list.
J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and the Twilight series of books were deemed too adult for the list.

You know a day is off to quite a cute/interesting start when you hop in the car and think to yourself "I'm going to be surrounded by all things Smurfs for most of the day." That's how one morning started for me as I sped down a wretched Los Angeles freeway over to the friendly-looking Sony Pictures Animation headquarters. The minute you stepped on their lot you were practically surrounded by Smurfs in the forms of balloons, little cardboard cut outs and tiny figurines who were happily eyeing you as you swooped in to grab the magical elixir of the caffeine gods, better known as coffee.Next thing you know, a large group of now-awake reporters were brought into a screening room. Producer Jordan Kerner went to the front of the room, explaining in detail about how they carefully put together "The Smurfs" movie in honor of its creator Peyo.

We are saddened to report that filmmaker Gary Winick died Sunday at age 49. Winick died after a long battle with brain cancer. While he has transitioned to such studio films as Letters to Juliet, 13 Going On 30, Bride Wars and Charlotte's Web, Winick has long led the charge for independent films. He directed Tadpole and was also the founder of indie company InDigEnt. Winick received his B.A. degree at Tufts University and his Mfa degree from the University of Texas and the American Film Institute. He taught at Nyu's Tisch School of the Arts for seven years, and in 1999 teamed up with John Sloss and IFC Productions to create Independent Digital Entertainment (InDigEnt) to produce digital video feature films for theatrical release. Said his longtime manager Rosalie Swedlin: Many people will write about Gary Winick’s extraordinary talents as a mentor, a director, a producer, and a pioneer in the independent cinema world,...

Once again it’s time for the only festival dedicated solely to expanded cinema performance in the U.S. (That I know of anyway.) Brooklyn’s 4th annual Mono No Aware is set to run on Nov. 28, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Lumenhouse studio and exhibition space.
For those unfamiliar with Mono No Aware’s mission, this is a one-night only collection of once-in-a-lifetime screening events, meaning that what the audience sees this night can never be recreated ever again.
I believe this year has the most performances in a single night than in previous Mono No Aware events. There will be 10 separate performances, each featuring some sort of film projection combined with either live music, image manipulation, audience interaction, electronic noise and/or spoken word.
With the truly unique nature of this event, there’s no way to adequately describe what each performance will exactly be like.

The first real look at Tim Burton.s vision of Alice In Wonderland just dropped, and my God, is it Tim Burtony. Not that the eccentric director.s name should be adjectived with a negative connotation. If ever there were a human being born to do something, Tim Burton was begotten to direct Alice In Wonderland, like Michael Phelps to swim or Graham Norton to make flamboyant gay jokes. Dark, twisty, absurd and a little bit fantastical, Lewis Carroll.s Alice In Wonderland is, in the humble opinion of this writer, right up there alongside J.M. Barrie.s Peter Pan and E.B. White.s Charlotte.s Web. As far as the plot or how literal this adaptation might be, well, I haven.t the slightest idea. Alice In Wonderland is frankly nothing more than nonsensical vignettes loosely hung together by location; so, God only knows where Tim Burton ...
