Way back in 2016, when “Netflix movie” still sounded like a contradiction in terms, McG and producer Mary Viola’s Wonderland Sound and Vision began developing its first project for Netflix, “When We First Met.” As one of the first Netflix rom-coms, no one knew exactly what a Netflix rom-com was supposed to be; McG made it his mission to find out.
Netflix Original Independent Film VP Ian Bricke remembers that as soon as the deal closed, McG turned his high-energy patter toward trying to understand exactly what Netflix wanted from its original films — everything from demographics to the way the platform worked. “As a creative and as a businessman and a producer, he’s always looking around the corner — what’s the next thing?” said Bricke. “The fact that it was uncharted territory, the wild west, was part of the appeal for him.”

Taking cues from an aunt who brings a string of random guys to family holiday gatherings may not be wise. Yet, in the pleasantly diverting rom-com “Holidate” (streaming on Netflix), that’s exactly what Sloane (Emma Roberts) does, with a twist. After meeting prickly, she and handsome strange Jackson enter into a pact. They’d been standing in a returns line at a mall, one-upping each other about the miseries of being single during holidays. Just ahead of New Year’s Eve (surely among the more demanding of connection holidays), the two agree to be one another’s faux dates for the heavy-pressure night.
Briskly directed by John Whitesell, written by Tiffany Paulsen, “Holidate” won’t change your mind about the tread-worn challenges of romantic comedies, but its leads leverage their charms nicely. The film begins with Sloane arriving at her mother’s on Christmas. We get an eyeful of...

The characters trapped in John Whitesell’s “Holidate” may not know they’re in a romantic comedy, but they sure know the perimeters of one. Sloane (Emma Roberts) and Jackson (Luke Bracey) are barely into their first encounter before they start yammering about the usual cinematic expectations of the genre — including the exact ones that will unfold in the film to come — as well as the very same outdated “men are from Mars, women are from Venus” concepts that have bolstered such movies since film history invented them. But while plenty of rom-coms have tackled this tongue-in-cheek approach before, “Holidate” never attempts to subvert the very things it mocks, instead opting for
At least Roberts and Bracey make for a charming pair, and their chemistry continually bolsters a script that never defies expectations, even as it tries to skewer them with flat jokes and bizarre swings at raunchy punchlines. At...

Netflix has handed a series order to First Kill, a YA vampire series based on the short story by New York Times bestselling author Victoria “V. E.” Schwab, with American Horror Story and Scream Queens star Emma Roberts set to produce via her Belletrist Productions. The eight-episode, one-hour series was created, written and executive produced by Schwab. Felicia D. Henderson also writes and serves as showrunner.
Schwab’s short story was published in Imprint’s Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite by Natalie C. Parker and Zoraida Córdova, a collection of short stories about vampires that was released in September.
It was a highly competitive situation, we hear, with Belletrist Productions winning the rights over 18 other entities.

The first trailer for Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey starrer 'Holidate' is out now.
Netflix has dropped the trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy flick 'Holidate' on Wednesday, and it looks like it could be nearly as good as The Kissing Booth.
The newly released trailer teases one of the most systematic rom-com plots imaginable.
The film revolves around a hopelessly single Sloane (Roberts) who's "the only single one left" in her family as she turns to Jackson (Bracey) to help her avoid awkward questions from her friends and family. Luke’s character is a perpetually single guy who is tired of being pressured to 'settle down'.
The official synopsis for 'Holidate' hints the same and reads, “Sloane and Jackson hate the holidays. They constantly find themselves single, sitting at the kid's table, or stuck with awkward dates. But when these two strangers meet during one particularly bad Christmas,...

After starring in Netflix’s Holidate and Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere, Luke Bracey has landed a key supporting role in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic.
Bracey will play Jerry Schilling, who started out with Presley (Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’s Austin Butler) when they were young football buddies in Memphis and became a crucial part of his entourage throughout his career
Schilling also had successful career outside of the so-called ‘Memphis Mafia,’ managing the the Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis and Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie.
The Warner Bros. production is due to start shooting at the Village Roadshow Studios on September 23, six months after it was forced to shut down after Tom Hanks, who plays the King of rock and roll’s manager Colonel Tom Parker, contracted Covid-19.

Netflix has been rolling out movie after movie in all the different categories lately, and has just announced that Emma Roberts has signed on to star in their latest rom-com, Holidate. It looks like Roberts is taking after her famous aunt Julia Roberts, who was pretty much the queen of rom-coms in decades past. Sidebar - I watched a snippet of an interview the other day where Julia Roberts said she was too old to be in rom-coms anymore. She’s 51, looks at least ten years younger, but I don’t even think that matters! She’s beautiful and funny, and a good actress. And people fall in love at every age. So I don’t think she should pigeon hole herself. But, I digress.

After naming Alfonso Cuarón the best director of the 21st century, Metacritic has gone ahead and averaged out filmmakers’ Metascores to name the worst directors since 2000. As with the first list, filmmakers must have made at least four movies in the last 17 years to be eligible — meaning that Tom Six (“The Human Centipede”) and Dinesh D’Souza (“Hillary’s America”) don’t qualify despite the fact that they’re far from critical darlings.

Having spent the last year sat in screening rooms and cinemas watching over 200 of 2011′s cinematic offerings, it stands to reason that I’m going to have to sit through a fair share of duds. As I had seen the vast majority of the key Oscar plays before November, I spent the latter part of the year dedicating myself to seeking out the worst, most lowest common denominator fare ripe for a skewering, and with these twenty dreadful pictures, we have what are, in my opinion, the 20 biggest train wrecks of 2011. Note that Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star is still awaiting worldwide DVD release and didn’t get distribution in the U.K., so that’s one that I was forced to avoid, but I’m assured that it’s irredeemably horrible nevertheless. Anyway, on with the list…

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
Stars: Martin Lawrence, Brandon T. Jackson, Jessica Lucas, Portia Doubleday | Written by Matthew Fogel, Don Rhymer | Directed by John Whitesell

Sadly, the third instalment in the Martin Lawrence fat suit franchise fails to be a 21st Century Citizen Kane and instead is same predictable retread of old fat lady jokes that stretch the definition of the word “comedy” to breaking point.
Eager for his son to go to college, FBI Agent Malcolm Turner (Lawrence) ambushes his mailman (Ken Jeong, in his latest “I did it for the money” cameo) for the acceptance letter to Duke. His son Trent (Jackson) has other ideas and needs Malcolm to sign a contract which will enable him to tour the Us as a hip hop artist.

Today marks the last day of the first half of the year, and as per custom, it's time to look back and reflect on the best and worst of 2011 so far. We could easily fill a Top 25 Worst films, and in the first six months, it's much more difficult to judge degrees of suck than it is to value the merits of the handful of great films, so the measure of hostility will additionally be taken into account in ranking the Ten Worst.
The top ten films are also limited to theatrical releases, as well, which unfortunately excludes a film that's now available on iTunes that would have competed for the top spot on this list: Turkey Bowl. Track it down; it's only 62 minutes, and it may be the funniest 62 minutes of the year (check out Seth's review here, and Dan's review over at the Houston Press).

The Scoop: Lawrence returns to the world of "Big Momma" for another turn as the FBI agent who likes to go undercover by dressing up as a really fat woman. This time around, "Tropic Thunder" standout Jackson will be on hand to wear some dresses. As Martin's protégé, he also takes a secret role as Big Momma's slightly smaller kinfolk. If you enjoy the laugh generated by men posing as women, this is your time.

Instant Netflix
Welcome to our latest stab at a weekly DVD column, as we attempt again to find a novel or amusing way to repackage opinions expressed in earlier reviews. Because many of you have already seen these movies, and because the readers often value the Pajiba community's opinions as much as the critics, I encourage you all to weigh in with your own opinions in the comments, particularly of the Must See Titles on Netflix Instant.
And before we get into this week's regular DVD releases, we will start with those must-see titles that just hit Instant Netflix. The first is Harry Brown, which Prisco went apeshit for last year: "There's just one man, upset that his friend was murdered, taking out the trash. And goddamn is it fun to watch ... Michael Caine is simply awesome as Harry Brown. You never once doubt his character. There's more depth in...

There's no way this Sony release will recover its $80m production budget — not to mention marketing and distribution expenses — at the domestic box office. To date, Just Go with It has taken in $60.75m. Directed by John Whitesell, the lowbrow Martin Lawrence comedy Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son pulled in $17m at 2,821 locations. This third installment in the Big Momma franchise averaged a passable $6,206 per theater. Also in the Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son cast: Brandon T. Jackson, Portia Doubleday, and Jessica Lucas. Title: Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son Director: John Whitesell Starring: Martin Lawrence, Brandon T. Jackson, Jessica Lucas, Michelle Ang, Portia Doubleday, Faizon Love Look, if you’re going into “Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son” - the third installment of the franchise - expecting comedic greatness and/or anything substantial in the story, you will be letdown cause it’s just not happening. That isn’t to say this 107 minute money-grabbing headline is a complete train wreck. More like a car wreck, that requires the airbags to go off. Was it necessary to do a third movie where Martin Lawrence runs around in a fat suit? Are there a ton of unanswered questions from the sequel? [...]...

Confessions (15)
(Tetsuya Nakashima, 2010, Japan) Takako Matsu, Kai Inowaki, Yoshino Kimura, Kaoru Fujiwara, Yukito Nishii, Masaki Okada. 106 mins
From an arresting opening scene in which a teacher details to her class how her daughter was killed by two of them, and what she's done in the way of retaliation, this complex, unpredictable Japanese thriller unwinds into one of the most operatic revenge plots since Old Boy. That first half-hour sequence packs in enough for a whole movie, but this has even grander ambitions, tackling familiar teen issues – bullying, alienation, malicious texting – through shifting perspectives, slick visuals and a choice soundtrack. It's bleak and moody, but the execution is bracing.
Paul (15)
(Greg Mottola, 2011, Us) Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen. 104 mins
Pegg and Frost indulge their fanboyishness, and their non-gay buddy love, in a knockabout comedy that plays like a stoner Et. Their sci-fi-geek tourists get into scrapes when they harbour Rogen's fugitive alien in their Winnebago,...

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
Directed by: John Whitesell
Cast: Martin Lawrence, Brandon T. Jackson, Portia Doubleday, Faizon Love, Jessica Lucas
Running Time: 1 hr 47 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 18, 2011
Plot: After his son (Jackson) witnesses a murder, FBI agent Malcolm Turner (Lawrence) sends his son to the Georgia Girls School for Arts. There, they disguise themselves as two women, whilst trying to find evidence related to the murder case.
Who’S It For?: Unless you’re a die hard fan of Martin Lawrence, Big Mommas is bound to be a disappointment, probably even for those who think that cross-dressing movies are funny.
Expectations: This wasn’t screened for critics, which is never a good sign (like an idiot, I caught the first showing this morning). The Big Momma franchise (yeah, it’s a franchise now) isn’t one of the top regarded series of its kind – and...

It is possible that nobody will ever know what it is about men dressed up as sassy fat women that captures this nation’s imagination. Between Tyler Perry’s “Madea” movies, Eddie Murphy’s “The Klumps” and Martin Lawrence’s “Big Momma’s House,” all tremendously successful movie franchises that explore this conceit, it seems that the sassy fat drag plot can never be done too many times.
“Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son” is the third installment in Lawrence’s successful series, which features him as Malcolm, an FBI agent who repeatedly goes undercover as Hattie Mae Pierce, aka “Big Momma,” a large, feisty woman with a nose for mischief and an endless supply of matronly wisdom. Though the film features all the antics we’ve come...

Why Should You See It? Because you liked the first two 'Big Momma's House' comedies and can't believe you've had to wait five years for a third.

What a travesty: Big Momma’s House and its sequel are finally available on Blu-Ray and we don’t have a take-over on the site devoted to the release?! Okay, so that’s a bit sharp, but really- who looks at the list of newly available blu-rays and picks either of these terrible “comedies” as essential purchases? Nope, thought not…
At what point in their careers did Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence think it was a good move to become Rob Schneider copy-cats? Both men built careers on the back of exceptional stand-up comedy potential, with some reasonable early film choices, and while Lawrence’s rap sheet doesn’t include as many hits as Murphy’s, there are the odd exceptions where he showed exactly what once made him a hot comic property.
I have a huge problem with any film that uses only the word ‘Outrageous’ as its fundamental selling point.

Martin Lawrence once again dresses up as a lady in Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. But is it actually funny? Here’s our review...
As any writer will tell you, even the proper ones who write for posh newspapers and magazines, there's nothing more terrifying than the dreaded block. That sinking feeling you get when you're hypnotised by a flashing cursor, and your brain refuses to impart any useful information. Your synapses aren't firing. There's no inspiration. No one's home.
Such is my dilemma with Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. Having sat through all 107 minutes of Martin Lawrence's latest comedy outing, I'm lost for words.
I went back and consulted the notes I scrawled, in a trance-like state, during the screening, but they make no sense. Most of the sentences look more like ancient runes, or like skulls, like a forgotten language, or the faces of long-dead ancestors,...
