Ross Valory has dreamed of making a solo album ever since he started gigging around San Francisco in the late Sixties, but other projects kept getting in the way. He was in the process of amassing original songs in 1971 when the Steve Miller Band brought him into the fold to play bass on Rock Love. Later, he teamed up with ex-members of Santana to form the Golden Gate Rhythm Section. Within a few months, they changed their name to Journey.

Nearly a decade after its initial release, "Mad Max: Fury Road" remains a miracle of filmmaking. On paper, nothing about this movie should work. It's a new entry in a decades-old movie series with a brand new cast (after its previous star turned out to be a horrible person), with a blend of CG and practical stunts that could have easily killed half the cast yet somehow didn't, and a story told mostly via visuals rather than dialogue or quips.
It is also a movie that faced countless issues before, during, and even after production, from changes in studios to big casting changes, wars, and more — like fate was determined to keep it from getting made. One of the big challenges throughout production was the weather. The main shooting location changed from New South Wales to the Namibian desert after an unexpectedly heavy rainfall turned the original location from a...

Prince Harry‘s surprise Good Morning America interview will likely upset his father, King Charles. The Duke of Sussex speaks out about his brief visit with the monarch after learning of the king’s cancer diagnosis. In turn, a group of royal commentators believe Charles will “hate” Harry’s tell-all on the ABC morning news show.

Listening to favorite Christmas songs is a vital part of the entire holiday season. Our new photo gallery ranks the Top 30 greatest tunes from worst to best. We only had two rules for assembling our list: each song can only be featured once and the same goes for each artist.
We chose what is considered the most definitive version of each song as performed by the singers most associated with the tunes. Of course, certain people most known for Christmas had to be included — Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Mariah Carey and more.
Among our list you’ll find Rock and Roll Hall of Famers such as Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Darlene Love, Brenda Lee and The Eagles. And we didn’t forget songs that originated from great TV specials like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Ryan O’Neal is dead at the age of 82 after years of health struggles. His son Patrick announced the news on Instagram.
O’Neal was one of the true heartthrobs of the New Hollywood era, making many who saw him in “Love Story,” “What’s Up Doc?,” “Barry Lyndon,” and “The Driver” swoon. He also was much more than a pretty face, showing a capacity to let the great directors of the era mold him into something so much more powerful than his looks. And his life was defined in some ways, also, by heartbreak and misfortune: the loss of his great love Farrah Fawcett in 2009, the years-long legal troubles of his son Redmond, the rupture of his relationship with son Griffin, and fraught connection to his daughter Tatum. He was a prickly icon, someone whose public statements and demeanor defied people to like him. But the films he leaves behind...

The history of music sometimes feels like a history of missed opportunities. John Lennon discussed the prospect of producing albums for Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley. He wasn’t the biggest fan of one of Dylan’s classics. It’s unclear if Dylan would have wanted to work with John given a comment he made about Paul McCartney.
What John Lennon would have done for Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley
John produced Harry Nilsson’s 1974 album Pussy Cats. Around the same time, he also worked on David Bowie’s “Fame” and “Across the Universe” and Elton John’s rendition of The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” During a 1975 interview with Rolling Stone, John was asked if he would like to produce other singers. “Dylan would be interesting because I think he made a great album in Blood on the Tracks but I’m still not keen on the backings,...

It’s good to see a steady stream of festive horror films being released year-on-year. Recently we’ve had everything from musicals such as Anna and the Apocalypse, to comedy action such as Violent Night. We’ve even been allowed to get a sneak peak of next year’s bloody Christmas as Art the Clown will seemingly take on the role of Santa Claus in Terrifier 3. However, this year we are gifted with a small present that has been placed delicately towards the back of the tree. That present is It’s a Wonderful Knife, and you should unwrap it as soon as you can.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year according to Andy Williams, but that’s not the case for Winnie Carruthers (Jane Widdop). As others around her, including all of her immediate family, are thriving, Winnie is still traumatised by events of the...

Like most genre labels, “art pop” is fluid and ambiguous, encapsulating a vast array of microgenres, from the foundational proto-punk of the Velvet Underground to the futuristic electronica of FKA twigs. Two contemporary acts that fall under the wide umbrella of art pop, Weyes Blood (a.k.a. Natalie Mering) and Perfume Genius (a.k.a. Mike Hadreas), share an interest in the romantic grandeur of acoustic ballads. But their disparate stage presences highlight the breadth and boldness that define pop music, and their performances at Los Angeles’s Greek Theatre last night were at turns electrifying and celebratory.
Much like Mering, Hadreas’s early work was largely piano-based and elegiac. With 2014’s Too Bright, however, he transformed into a strutting rock star, a persona he wholeheartedly embodies on stage. With his longtime boyfriend, Alan Wyffels, on keys, Hadreas kicked off his opening set with the invigorating “Your Body Changes Everything,...

Elvis Presley’s “Solitaire” was also recorded by Andy Williams and other artists. A writer of the song listened to all 90 recordings of the song and picked a favorite. Elvis’ version appeared on the album From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee.
Elvis Presley‘s “Solitaire” was originally by Neil Sedaka. The co-writer of the song wasn’t a fan of Elvis’ version. On the other hand, he loved a cover of the song by The Carpenters.
A songwriter disliked that Elvis Presley’s ‘Solitaire’ was from the singer’s ‘fat’ period
Phillip Cody is a songwriter who worked with Neil Sedaka on multiple occasions. He co-wrote Sedaka songs such as “Bad Blood,” “The Immigrant,” and “Solitaire.” The latter song became a standard. The artists who recorded “Solitaire” included The Carpenters, Andy Williams, Sheryl Crowe, and Elvis Presley.
During a 2011 interview with Songfacts, Cody discussed his feelings about Elvis’ “Solitaire.

Ed Ames, the deep-toned baritone pop singer and actor who portrayed the faithful Cherokee sidekick Mingo on the 1960s NBC series Daniel Boone, has died. He was 95.
Ames died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles after a battle with Alzheimer’s, his wife Jeanne told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of Massachusetts and a son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, Ames starred as the Oxford-educated Mingo opposite Fess Parker as Daniel Boone on the first four seasons (1964-68) of the TV Western.
His most memorable night on television, however, came in April 1965 during an appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show. Demonstrating to host Johnny Carson how Mingo would expertly handle a tomahawk, he hurled the weapon at an outline of a cowboy drawn on a wooden board — and it stuck right in the crotch.
As the audience howled, Carson left his desk and said to Ames in now-classic ad-libbed lines,...

Imagine an on-the-road concert documentary shot in the anything-goes days of 1970 — a hurly-burly vérité jamboree like “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” or “Elvis on Tour.” It’s about the biggest rock band in the world. It encompasses 11 shows in 26 days, with headlines and controversies and a film crew to capture it all. We see the band members backstage, on planes, in their nightly lodgings, and onstage. The crowds are rapturous.
“What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?” is, in a way, that movie. The band that’s on tour, the mighty but fraught Blood, Sweat & Tears, was full of great musicians who most people didn’t know by name. Yet as fronted by the intoxicating huskiness of lead singer David Clayton-Thomas, they emerged from the embers of the counterculture to become one of the first true supergroups. The Christmas season is advertised as a time for "peace on earth" and "goodwill toward men," but for a lot of us, the holidays are little more than a headache and a half. It's hard not to feel like such a Grinch this time of year when everyone else seems to be filled with joy, but fortunately, there are movies to help us anti-sentimentality Scrooges feel a little less alone. We've talked before on /Film about some of the best alternative Christmas movies (that aren't "Die Hard"), but we've never broken down why these films are so important. I might be acting overdramatic by calling these films "non-sentimental," as there's plenty of sentiment to be found in any story (as long as you know where to look), but I think we can all agree that the sentiment of something like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" is in stark contrast to Bob Clark's "Black Christmas.

Look, I'm not here to call Andy Williams a liar or anything, but the Christmas season is not always "the most wonderful time of the year." In fact, despite the twinkly lights and readily available peppermint mocha offerings everywhere you look, Christmas can be a straight-up miserable time for a lot of people. The cruel irony is that this is also the time of year when sentimental films take over the airwaves, much to the chagrin of anyone feeling less than holly-jolly. Fortunately, alternative Christmas movies are aplenty, and this year brought the addition of "Violent Night," a soon-to-be Christmas classic, especially for anyone who favors watching a film like "Die Hard" instead of "A Christmas Story" to celebrate the season.
For the uninitiated, "Violent Night" is a gory action film starring "Stranger Things" favorite David Harbour as Santa Claus. After an elite team of mercenaries breaks into a family's...

As Christmas playlists continue their usual December boom on streaming platforms and on the radio, Adele nevertheless maintains her hold on the number-one spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the tracking week that ended on December 9. Read more on Billboard.com.
Adele’s “30” remains at number-one for the third week in a row on the Billboard 200 with 193,000 equivalent album units based on combined album sales, track sales, and online streaming performance. That’s down 33% from last week, but it’s still the best third week for any album since Drake‘s “Scorpion” more than three years ago. And “30” has some breathing room from the holiday onslaught. Taylor Swift‘s re-recorded “Red” maintains its number-two position, while Polo G‘s deluxe addition of “Hall of Fame” jumps to number-three.

“It always is Christmas Eve, in a ghost story” – Jerome K. Jerome, 1891
In the English countryside, dinner had ended, and the company retired to the drawing room. They gathered around the fire as the parson, who sat in a high-backed oak chair, proceeded to tell of goblins and ghosts. The squire, not a superstitious man himself, listened intently as the parson spoke about the crusader who rose from his tomb for a nighttime ride. The old porter’s wife added to the tale with her own of the crusader’s march on Midsummer Eve, when fairies became visible.
Such was Christmas Night at Bracebridge Hall, England, in 1820.
The story set in the fictional manor was written by American author Washington Irving, and published in 1820 in the fifth installment of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. This was less than three months before the world was introduced to the Headless...

Christmas music continued to rule the Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs Chart this week, with holiday fare occupying nine of the Top Ten and 18 of the Top 20 spots on the chart. The biggest holiday song, of course, was — and maybe always will be — Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which racked up an additional 47 million streams in the latest tracking week.
Brenda Lee provided Carey with respectable competition, earning more than 41 million streams on “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Bobby Helms’ version of “Jingle Bell Rock” also amassed more than 40 million streams.

Andy Williams was a staple in our housegrowing up. He had those great Christmas specials every year on NBC and they always made you feel cozy and special and spirited. Great sets, costumes, sketches and terrific music. It was traditional, and he always wore great sweaters. Needless to say, all of this made mewant to have a traditional-looking cover for my first Christmas album. All the stars used to sing the same handful of songs, but it was the arrangements that made them stick in your brain. No matter what he sang, I was always happy to see and hear Andy Williams. This song is a particular favorite- 'It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.'...

Nancy Wilson, one of the most revered jazz singers of the 20th century, has died, her manager told the Associated Press. She was 81.
The singer passed away at her home in Pioneertown, a small California community north of Palm Springs, after a long illness, according to manager Devra Hall.
Wilson’s three Grammy awards spanned a more than 40-year period, with her first coming in 1965 in the Best Rhythm & Blues category for her Capitol single “How Glad I Am.” Her last was in 2007, awarded for Best Jazz Vocal Album for “Turned to Blue,” her final release. (She had seven nominations in all.) Wilson’s recording career actually dates back to 1959, when she released “Like in Love,” an album arranged by the legendary Billy May.

Beatles insider Ken Mansfield always had the best seats in the house, even when the show was up on the roof.
Michael Lindsay-Hogg's 1970 documentary film Let It Be was recorded in January 1969, while the band rehearsed songs for their twelfth and final studio album Let It Be. Originally planned as a television documentary to go along with a concert broadcast, the documentary saw The Beatles get back to their roots. Augmented by a keyboard player they'd known since their beginnings in Hamburg, the band performed as they had in the beginning, as a five-piece with loud guitars, steady thunderous drumming and unadorned voices through microphones covered in nylon stockings. Until that day, January 30, 1969, on the roof, the Beatles hadn't performed live since August 29th, 1966, when they performed at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. For their first Broadway Christmas show, American Idol rivals Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken are dreaming of holiday TV variety specials of yore from the likes of Andy Williams, Sonny and Cher and Dean Martin. Holiday lesson: Careful what you wish for.
If you’ve watched any of those old specials on retro channels like Get TV this season, you’ll know a small dollop of Christmas kitsch covers a lot of cookie. Ruben and Clay are spreading it wide and thin at the Imperial Theatre.
Loaded with Christmas songs both religious and secular, Ruben & Clay’s First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show, opening tonight, pads the proceedings with intentionally cheesy sketch comedy, corny banter and, more successfully, thoughtful personal nostalgia.

This choice will not surprise one person who has ever met me. Here's the history I grew up an only child. I unsuccessfully begged my mother for a brother or sister until she was well into her 80's. I discovered the Osmond Brothers during their One Bad Apple phase, which led me into a few unfortunate years of bell-sleeved shirts and fringed vests. The Osmonds' obvious joy at singing together, to say nothing of their vast musical talents, would bring tears to my eyes as I watched them perform. I knew that Andy Williams had discovered the brothers, and gave them their debut on his TV show. However, I was unaware that Andy and his brothers were the original clean-cut singing siblingsthat is until I saw this production number on an Andy Williams Christmas special Boy, were my eyesand earsopened This performance of Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells features the...

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

Oh how the tables have turned! While Sci-Fi and Fantasy films normally do well at the box offices while garnering critical acclaim amongst fans, they’re usually snubbed during awards season. Sorry that it’s been a while, dear readers. A combination of computer trouble and being busy with other things has kept me away for the last couple weeks. But the column is finally back, and this week’s Trailer Trashin’ takes a look at the upcoming horror-comedy Krampus.
Premise: When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know that this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus, a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

Had it been made fifteen or twenty years ago, Lolo would be the sort of European comedy that gets a Martin Short-starring remake put into production before the end of its first opening weekend. In 2015, it now feels like its own reinterpretation of American domestic farces the ‘90s and ‘00s that tended to star Billy Crystal, then Ben Stiller. While this particular subgenre hasn’t become any fresher in the years since higher concepts and filthier content started to gain a foothold, a trio of funny lead performances make Lolo easier to swallow as a knowing throwback, rather than dismiss as a commercial rehash.
That Lolo never asks you to excuse its French is perhaps the most modern thing about it. The movie’s first exchange is a lewdly garrulous discussion between co-writer/director July Delpy’s Violette, a Parisian divorcee, and her best friend (Karin Viard, in a...

Songs On Screen: HitFix recurring feature of tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out all the entries in the series here. There are three great songs from American film, and they are all about rainbows. “Over the Rainbow,” “Moon River” and “The Rainbow Connection” – are the three most quintessentially American songs ever to appear on screen, sung by three quintessentially American characters; and all three stand apart as plaintive cries of lonely souls dreaming of someplace far away..”Waiting round the bend” ”where troubles melt like lemondrops” for “the lovers, the dreamers and me” The things these songs share tell you everything needs to know about the character of 20th Century America. The things they don’t share tell you everything you need to know about how that character changed as the era wore on. Let’s start at the top, and the very top it is.
