Rep. Joe Barton, the visibly shaken manager of the Gop congressional baseball team that came under fire Wednesday morning, confirmed that his young son was at the practice when a gunman opened fire — and acted courageously to stay safe.
Standing next to his 10-year-old son, Jack — the pair still wearing their baseball caps — Barton’s voice broke when he spoke about the chaotic scene that morning when shots rang out.
“Some of us were in the dugout. Some of us were on the ground. I was behind the dugout. My son Jack got under an SUV. He was very brave,...

Cristiano Ronaldo may have the medals, money and looks, even an airport — but it’s his bronze likeness that’s stealing the show.
A bust of the Real Madrid soccer star was unveiled on Wednesday during a ceremony renaming Portugal’s Madeira International Airport to Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo in honor of the islands’ local hero.
Renaming the airport after Ronaldo, 32, may have been met with mixed reviews, but the verdict on the statue to commemorate the change seems certain — at least on social media.

With its various long-takes and its narrative centered on one man’s thousand-mile quest to seek vengeance on those who left him for dead, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “The Revenant” combined beauty with brutality. And Vimeo user Tom Williams has highlighted the moments of pause in his video, “Stillness in The Revenant.” Beautifully complimenting Emmanuel Lubezki’s gorgeous Oscar-winning cinematography, this somber, poetic 2 ½ minute tribute to Iñárritu’s latest is a stunning, visually extraordinary look at the film’s magnetic vision, captured entirely in natural lighting. While the film’s rugged, strenuous production and story often overshadowed the film’s larger conversation, this video is a firm reminder of the often-patient, carefully considered use of open space and barren terrain to demonstrate the sullen, sorrowful themes laid thick within. And though Leonardo DiCaprio’s whole-hearted dedication battling the elements and...

Big fantasy films aimed at younger audiences can be a dicey proposition, especially in this era of dystopian adaptations and romance epics. But Michael Caton-Jones is ready to shoulder the challenge of The Giant Under The Snow.Caton-Jones is developing the screenplay alongside Tom Williams, working from John Gordon’s book. The film finds three young heroes discovering a rusted old relic one Christmas, an artifact that contains a dark power. They’re soon plunging into a strange world of ancient magic and terrifying evil, racing against the clock to return the relic to its rightful owner before their enemies can retrieve it. The reason for the rush? The item can wake a legendary creature slumbering beneath the snow, one that can be used either as a force for good or for terrible destruction. No casting has taken place yet, but the co-writer/director wants the film ready to shoot this October at Pinewood,...

Halloween is over. Am I sad? Yes. But it’s not an angry sad. It’s a theatrical sad. It’s the kind of sad that pairs well with gray skies, bare trees and cold wind. But then, if I’m happy about being sad, am I actually sad? Does this make me a perky goth? Because I think I’d rather hang myself with a jump rope. Preferably from a playground basketball hoop.

The latest indie web series to cross our radar comes from the Steel City. Internet Famous, created by Pittsburgh-based duo Chris Lee and Tom Williams, shows what happens when an ordinary guy stars in a viral video against his will. The main character of Internet Famous is Andy, who gains the nickname Angry Andy after he delivers a bitter rant that his roommate secretly records. As the series goes on, Andy must deal with the unintended consequences of his 15 minutes. Despite this premise, Internet Famous ultimately breaks down to a canvas through which the lead characters can bounce lines of dialogue off one another. In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Williams named Kevin Smith (and Clerks in particular) as a main inspiration. "Being dirty for the sake of being dirty -- that's not really funny," he said. "That was the conscious effort -- we wanted to make it as...

Big things are in the works at Universal Orlando. The company officially opened Transformers: The Ride 3D on June 20, and is also currently building two other exciting expansions at the Florida theme park.
Universal Orlando is already home to a "The Simpsons"-themed ride, but the theme park announced in May that a complete redesign and expansion is in the works to make the area of Islands of Adventure feel like Springfield. Krusty Burger and Moe's Tavern are already open for business, and Zap2it saw construction for additional areas like Cletus Chicken Shack, Bumblebee Man Taco Truck and Kang & Kodos Twirl 'n' Hurl underway.
"Springfield's a natural extension because we opened the ride in 2008 and it's been such a huge hit, an award-winning attraction," Universal Creative Studio executive producer Mike West tells Zap2it. "We thought, 'What better thing to do than to take the animated world which you...

After a week of rumors and speculation, the good folks at Warner Bros. announced today that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is officially coming to Universal Studios Hollywood. No time line on when the magic's set to start just yet, but the very idea of riding broomsticks and chugging frozen butterbeer in sunny California has the whole MTV Movies team pretty stoked. Not only that, there are plans in the works to expand on the Wizarding World's current Orlando presence. Pretty awesome day for "Potter" fans all around!

Normally we wouldn’t cover rumored stories of movie-related theme parks or rides, but since this is an actual confirmation, I think we can make an exception. Just a little more than a decade and eight movies later, the world of Harry Potter is coming to Universal Studios Hollywood. It only seems fair that the birth place of movies gets one of the most successful franchises to date. Note that I am still waiting for the Spider-Man ride to make is way cross country. Still this is great news for fan’s of J.K. Rowlings’ work as they will now be able to experience the world of Harry Potter visually. Butterbeer, chocolate frogs, and disgusting jelly beans. Oh and maybe a few Harry Potter themed-rides as well.
I for one have experienced the entire film series but never actually read the books, so I suspect that there will be...

Earlier this month, word leaked out [1] that Universal was planning to build a second Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park world in the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park. Days later, we confirmed [2] that the Jaws attraction would be closing in Universal Orlando to make way for a new attraction. And yesterday we reported [3] a rumor from a usually good source that Amity would be replaced with an expansion of the Wizarding World which would involve Harry Potter's London, Diagon Alley, and a Hogwarts Express train that would transport guests in between the two parks (Universal Orlando and Islands of Adventure) into "the wizarding world." While details have still not been revealed, Universal held a press conference today to announce that Harry Potter would be coming to the Hollywood park, and that the Wizarding World would expand in Orlando. Still no details on what the expansion will entail, and what...

Kylie Speers has hit back at reports that she is dating Dr Chris Brown. The Australian entertainment reporter, who used to date actor Tom Williams, was rumoured to have been on a string of dates with Bondi Vet star Brown, but reportedly wanted to keep their romance quiet. Speers has now told The Daily Telegraph: "[Chris] is just a friend, we've known each other a long time." Brown is also believed to be the vet for Speers's Newfoundland dog Rowdy. Nicola McLean has acknowledged that she has taken her recent weight loss "too far". The former glamour model and I'm A Celebrity contestant first addressed rumours about her extreme weight loss last November, saying that she looked like "a lollipop head" because of her slim stature. In an interview with Ok magazine, McLean admitted that her weight loss has "gone too far" and has worried her husband, footballer Tom Williams, as well as family and friends. "I go for long periods without eating. But then I will eat, I'm not afraid of eating, but I don't eat normally," she explained. "I don't make (more)...

The orphaned Miramax films are finding new homes. Last week we heard that The Debt, John Madden's film that is (partially) about a group of Mossad agents tracking a Nazi war criminal locked distribution via Focus Features. Now Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, the remake of a '70s TV chiller co-written and produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by newcomer Troy Nixey, will go out to Us screens via the new company FilmDistrict. I'm quite happy about this. We loved the footage shown last year at Comic Con [1], and the film has played well at some small festival appearances. It looked for a while last year like Disney was going to directly distribute the film, and while I wanted to see it hit theaters that didn't seem like the best way to do it. But Guillermo del Toro has a good relationship with FilmDistrict's Bob Berney thanks to Pan's Labyrinth,...

News from Deadline is that Producers Hunt Lowry and Mark Johnson are working with Adrian Vanderbosch and Isaac Testerman of Mysteria Film Group, who previously purchased the rights from the developers, Cyan Worlds, to bring Myst to the big screen.
Myst hit the computer gaming market in 1993 and went on to produce four top-selling sequels and become the biggest selling adventure game in history. While Myst does not have a simple linear narrative, it does have a very rich and multi-layered mythology. Johnson, who is known for his work on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, is looking to breath a similar breathe into the Myst world.
The film will focus on a human (the Stranger) who enters Myst and inadvertently brings down the civilization. Producers Johnson and Vanderbosch are on the hunt for a writer before they approach any studios. “Our aim with this project...

After a nearly two-decade hiatus, Oscar-winning producer Lili Fini Zanuck is returning to her directorial roots to helm a big-screen adaptation of John O'Brien's 1996 novel "Assault on Tony's."
Mark Johnson is producing the project, which is about to start casting with the goal of entering production by year's end.
The dark novel by O'Brien, the author of "Leaving Las Vegas," revolves around five white patrons who are barricaded in a bar called Tony's for 17 days while a race riot rages. The drunks continue to drink, but things get intense when the liquor supply begins to dwindle. Power struggles ensue, rationing begins and the alcoholics descend into their own chaos as the violence escalates outside.
Erik Bergquist ("The Fast and the Furious") adapted the novel and has made updates to reflect the current climate. The riots now have more to do with today's economic crisis, and the 17 days have been reduced to three.

It's not easy finding truly radical innovation when it comes to the hospitality industry. Hotels and resorts follow a tried-and-true money-making pattern and rarely risk giving guests anything more than the same experience they've already had elsewhere--except in a different place. The Radical Innovation in Hospitality Awards aim to change all that by identifying big new ideas in hospitality, from those currently open and operating to the purely conceptual.
Four finalists were selected by a jury, and yesterday, at the Hospitality Design Boutique Exposition & Conference in Miami Beach, attendees voted in real-time for a winner, who walked home with $10,000. Here are the three finalists, and the winner, which is an actual operating hotel--the Pixel Hotel, in Linz, Austria--where you can book a room today.

When asked whether he might crash the glamour model's wedding to footballer Tom Williams, he replied: "Oh no, that would turn into a right punch-up.
