His father worked as a tailor at MGM and was instrumental in getting his son employed at the studio as an assistant cutter. Ralph ended up working under contract at MGM as editor from 1941 -63. He spent another six years at United Artists (1964-70).
He worked for three months editing the chariot race for Ben-Hur (1959).
