Steve McQueen’s final film is an action-comedy compromise that will satisfy his fans even if it barely hangs together. The thrills are kinder & gentler, with plenty of hair-raising stunts but less gunplay and gore. McQueen’s eccentric bounty hunter collects toys and can barely drive a car, but he always gets his man. Kathryn Harrold is good; Eli Wallach, LeVar Burton, Ben Johnson, Richard Venture and Tracey Walter are along for the ride (and stay out of Steve’s spotlight). Steve’s in charge — he tailors everything to highlight his quirky star characterization, and the guiding principle is ‘low key.’

Over his remarkable career in film, Orson Welles was the recipient of a trio of Oscar nominations, all for “Citizen Kane” (1941). That marked his feature film debut and is widely considered one of the greatest motion pictures ever produced. He, alongside Herman J. Mankiewicz, triumphed in Best Original Screenplay on the big night and, nearly three decades later, Welles earned an Honorary Oscar for his contributions to cinema.
Though Welles died in 1985, the filmmaker once again finds himself the talk of Oscar season, this time posthumously, with his final picture, “The Other Side of the Wind.”
The film, which made its world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival, stars two-time Oscar winner John Huston (who died in 1987) as Jake Hannaford, a washed-up, hard-drinking Hollywood director who vies to revive his career with an experimental film, full of sex and violence. Shot over several years in the 1970s, “The Other Side of the Wind...

Sam Peckinpah was a fine director of actors when the material was right, and his first collaboration with Steve McQueen is an shaded character study about a rodeo family dealing with changing times. Joe Don Baker and Ben Johnson shine, but the movie belongs to Ida Lupino and Robert Preston.

I suppose there were plenty of successful rodeo-themed westerns back in the day, perhaps the kind interrupted by a cowboy song every ten minutes or so.

In cast interviews included with the first-season Game of Thrones DVD, Jason Momoa, who played the Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo, stands out from his mostly foreign co-stars in part due to the many American colloquialisms he uses to describe the show, such as referring to his hulking character as “a pimp.” Since exiting Thrones, Momoa has portrayed the titular warrior in 2011’s Conan the Barbarian and Philip Kopus on the 2014 SundanceTV series The Red Road. But the gentle surfer-bro of Hawaiian-German-Irish-Native-American descent also found time to fit in his directorial debut, The Road to Paloma, which arrived July 4 on VOD and hits theaters today. In the buddy/road-trip/revenge picture, he plays Robert Wolf, a renegade Native American on the run after killing his mother’s rapist-murderer, who had otherwise gone unpunished. Momoa and his writing partner and co-star Robert Homer Mollohan hope to shine a light on a lamentable...

In Game of Thrones Jason Momoa won the devotion of fanboys and fangirls as the merciless horse lord Khal Drogo, but his next adventure has him playing a wolf. Not a Stark, but Robert Wolf, a Native American who gets entangled in a modern Western tale of revenge and redemption. Deadline reports Momoa not only stars in this crime-drama called Road to Paloma, but also makes his feature directorial debut here. Though best-known for his roles on television, Momoa broke into directing in 2010 with a 15-minute short called Brown Bag Diaries: Ridin. the Blinds in B Minor. For Road to Paloma, he co-wrote the screenplay with Jonathan Hirschbein, and Robert Homer Mollohan, the latter of whom will co-star in the dark tale. After his mother is raped and murdered on a Native American reservation, Wolf (Momoa) decides to take the law into his own hands and avenge her. This quest...

Though he’s probably best known for wielding a big sword in the Conan remake and mounting a tiny woman in HBO’s Game of Thrones, it turns out Jason Momoa also fancies himself a director of films. Or, at the very least, he’s now directed one feature film, and thanks to a partnership with WWE Studios and Anchor Bay, that movie is going to be brought to audiences in North America, the UK, and Australia/New Zealand. The film is called Road to Paloma, and it stars Momoa himself, as well as his co-writer Robert Homer Mollohan, in an adventure tale that almost sounds too ridiculously chest-beating and man-affirming to be real. I mean, honestly, I’ve never actually seen that show Renegade that Lorenzo Lamas used to be on, but when I read the plot synopsis for Road to Paloma, it sounds to me like it’s exactly what watching a season of Renegade...

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. In the case of President Barack Obama's recent golf excursion during his vacation on Martha's Vineyard, one picture reveals that his putting game wasn't going as well as he would have liked. While golfing at the Farm Neck Golf Club, Obama was caught in the act trying to coax his ball in the right direction as it veered toward the left.
Photographers and journalists aren't typically allowed to join Obama while he plays games of golf, but this case was an exception. Maybe it was his smooth poses that the White House was trying to hide in past situations, though we're glad the world can now see the president in all his golfing glory.
Obama was out golfing with aide Marvin Nicholson, investor Robert Wolf and chef Sam Kass. The foursome left the golf course after five hours.

Hip-hop icon, philanthropist and all-around mogul Russell Simmons sat down with Robert Wolf to discuss his business ideals, the U.S. government and society in an interview with Robert Wolf.
As the Human Rights Campaign points out, Wolf asked Simmons -- who has frequently supported lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) causes in the past -- about hip-hop’s evolution in the Reuters TV interview, which is part of a Black History Month series. Simmons stated that rappers today aren’t nearly as homophobic, racist, and sexist as they were in previous generations.
“You still have the mirrors of our societal sickness: the homophobia, the sexism, the racism, the gangsta stuff," he said. "You still have all that, but that’s important because they’re not as homophobic as their parents. They’re not as racist as their parents. They’re not as sexist as their parents. You hear their language and its scares you.

With co-founders Edward Norton, Shauna Roberson, and his brother Jeffro, Wolfe is on a mission to put the fun back in fundraising.
When he was 21, Robert Wolfe started Moosejaw, an outdoor apparel store, based on one principle: fun. Now, 18 years later, Wolfe and the co-founders of Crowdrise are basing an entire fundraising platform on that very same principle. Speaking on behalf of those co-founders--Shauna Robertson, Edward Norton, and Wolfe's brother Jeffro--Wolfe insists it’s all about "nonsensical marketing. It’s the way we can have impact in the philanthropic space."
Laughs aside, the Crowdrise community has become a serious fundraising force by eschewing the traditional model of philanthropy--no $500 per plate formal fundraising dinners here--and going straight for an easy, engaging way to make micro-donations.
On your mark
Wolfe and his brother sold off most of Moosejaw.com in early 2007. They could have retired, but "wanted to have an impact,...

This message came to me from a reader named Peter Svensland. He and a friend have been debating about my qualities as a film critic, and they've involved a considerable critic, Dan Schneider, in their discussion. I will say that he has given the question a surprising amount of thought and attention over the years, and may well be correct in some aspects. What his analysis gives me is a renewed respect and curiosity about his own work.

Variety reports that Oscar-winning director Ron Howard, who recently walked away from Disney's The Alamo, is now considering another project centering around Mexican history. Universal, along with Howard's Imagine, have made a preemptive buy of The Serpent and the Eagle, the story of how Spanish conqueror Cortez flattened the Aztec nation and plundered its riches with the help of an Aztec princess-turned-slave. Written by Hans Beimler and Robert Wolfe, Howard has not yet committed to directing the film, as he is also looking at helming The Burial (possibly starring Denzel Washington), and the Universal/Imagine picture Cinderella Man, which would star Russell Crowe as Depression era boxer and folk hero Jim Braddock.
