Anyone who considers him- or herself a true-crime fan has seen Errol Morris's seminal documentary The Thin Blue Line, which unearths the truth about the 1976 murder of Officer Robert Wood and the subsequent conviction of Randall Adams for the crime. Adams's sentence was ultimately overturned, due in part to Morris's investigative work in the film. In an excellent interview with Slate, Morris discusses why we're experiencing such a collective infatuation with the true-crime genre:However you want to describe it: the whodunit; the mystery of what really happened; the mystery of personality; of who people really, really are is powerfully represented when you have a crime standing in back of all of it. It’s a way of dramatizing really significant issues: How we know what we know? How have we come to the belief that we have? Is justice served by the various mechanisms in our society? Is the...

Casey Johnson, who was found dead in Los Angeles, on January 4, 2010. From PatrickMcMullan.com. At the age of 30, heiress and party girl Casey Johnson is dead. She was the fiancée of Tila Tequila, adoptive mother to a baby girl from Kazakhstan, a diabetic, and facing charges that she had burglarized her own friend’s home. She told Vanity Fair that her decision to pass on being Paris Hilton’s Tonto on The Simple Life was “the stupidest mistake of my life.” Her father, Robert Wood “Woody” Johnson IV, heard of Casey’s death after his New York Jets clinched a position in the wild-card scramble. Her mother, Sale Johnson, was reportedly suing for custody of the baby, named Ava-Monroe. While loved ones and rag reporters alike wait for toxicology reports, some wonder: Will this latest death finally act as a warning to hard-partying, “bright” young things? What are you, new?...

Casey Johnson, an heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune, lived the life of a Hollywood socialite . partying with Paris Hilton, posing for paparazzi, becoming engaged to bisexual reality TV star Tila Tequila and like her idol Marilyn Monroe, dying young. An autopsy Tuesday found no evidence of trauma on the body of the 30-year-old Johnson and a determination of the cause of death was deferred pending toxicological tests and microscopic studies that could take eight weeks or more.Johnson was diagnosed with diabetes as a child, but it was unclear if that had a role in her death.Johnson's body was found Monday in the home where she lived behind big wooden gates bearing the name "Grumblenot" in a quiet neighborhood. There were no signs of foul play, police Officer Gregory Baek said. But there were signs of trouble in tabloid tales of a life of privilege seemingly spinning out of control.

Police investigating the death of Casey Johnson say that although the Johnson & Johnson heiress had a well-known drug abuse problem, she may have died from not taking her diabetes medication. Johnson, who was diagnosed with diabetes as a child and had worked with the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, told the New York Observer in 2000 that she gave herself insulin shots every day. "She was still suffering from diabetes and she was still on diabetic medications," a police source with knowledge of the situation tells People. "The speculation is she came home after a night of partying and passed out without taking...

Casey Johnson was born into a family of spectacular wealth, sordid squabbles and tragic incidents. The death of the 30-year-old Johnson & Johnson heiress is the latest tragedy to befall the family.
Casey's great-great-grandfather Robert Wood Johnson founded the pharmaceutical company, along with his two brothers, in the late 1880s. The company passed from family member to family member until Robert Wood Johnson II — who was known by the intimidating nickname "The General" — took over and turned the business into a multibillion-dollar international conglomerate. The General's son, Robert Wood Johnson III, had five children — one who died of a cocaine overdose and one who died in a motorcycle accident, both in 1975 — and was eventually forced out of the company in the mid-1960s after a falling-out with his father.

New York -- Many journalistic organizations are having to cut back staff, but a huge grant is helping PBS' "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer" to add more reporting.
"NewsHour" will add a production unit to focus on global health issues in the developing world. The three-year, $3.5 million grant is funded through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. There will be 40 to 50 documentary reports on such issues as HIV/AIDS, measles and tuberculosis in the developing world on the TV program, as well as digitally. There also is an outreach component to the grant.
"In recent years we have seen extraordinary progress against some of the greatest health problems in developing countries, and many compelling stories have yet to be told," Gates Foundation executive Joe Cerrell said. "This new effort will build on 'The NewsHour's' tradition of thoughtful, thorough coverage of critical global health issues."
