Cinema history is full of missed opportunities. For example, a Beatles movie almost featured David Bowie as a character from a Beatles song. Instead, a famous comedian got the role. A member of the film’s cast revealed what she thought about this development.
David Bowie almost played Mr. Kite in a Beatles movie
Across the Universe is a Fab Four jukebox musical set in a heightened version of the 1960s. Several characters in the movie are named after figures from Beatles songs, including Jude, Lucy, Maxwell, Sexy Sadie, and Mr. Kite.
During a 2018 interview with Vulture, director Julie Taymor discussed the role of Mr. Kite. “We rehearsed it like a normal musical in theater … and it bonded everybody,” he said. “I’ll never forget [star] Evan [Rachel Wood] walking in the hallways with this Bowie T-shirt, because at one point we’d asked David Bowie if he was going to play Mr.

During The Office‘s original run on NBC, Rainn Wilson was starring on one of the most popular and acclaimed shows on TV — but it didn’t make him happy, he now admits.
“When I was in The Office, I spent several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn’t enough,” Wilson, who played Dwight on the NBC comedy, tells Bill Maher on a recent episode of Maher’s Club Random podcast. “I’m on a hit show, Emmy nominated every year, making lots of money… People love it. And I wasn’t enjoying it. I was thinking about, ‘Why...

“You’ve never seen Catherine Hardwicke like this before” might as well be emblazoned on any and all marketing materials for the director’s diverse projects. From “Thirteen” to “Twilight,” “Red Riding Hood” to “The Nativity Story,” Hardwicke is constantly shifting gears, changing tones, mixing it up.
Since the breakout success of both Sundance award-winner “Thirteen” and the first “Twilight” film (a massive smash by any metric), Hardwicke has continued to evolve, even in an industry not always welcoming to women with big dreams. As she readies to debut her latest, the Toni Collette-starring fish-out-of-water comedy “Mafia Mamma,” Hardwicke is still pushing forward, even when it’s not easy. That’s just who she is.
“We still need that light to get shined a little brighter and put a little bit more attention on women’s films,” Hardwicke said during a recent Zoom interview with IndieWire. “We’re still fighting.

Millennium Entertainment has revealed the first trailer for director Fredrik Bond’s film Charlie Countryman, which stars Shia Labeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, Mads Mikkelsen, Melissa Leo and Rupert Grint. The film made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to the mixed reviews from critics. The pic is a very stylized, very music video-esque fairy tale that feels like it was made in the post-Tarantino ’90s. Labeouf stars as an American tourist who goes to Europe to fulfill his mother’s dream, but who falls in love with beautiful Romanian girl Gabi (played by Rachel Wood), the estranged wife of a psychotic gangster...

A good five months since it premiered at a packed Eccles house in Park City, Deadline reports that Millennium Entertainment have picked up one of the worst films presented at this year’s Sundance paying a “low seven figures” for what is essentially a hollow, dramatic exercise in existentialism that we broken down and muted, could not surprisingly pass off as components of glossy ad campaign for eau de toilette. Despite placing high on the annual Black List, Fredrik Bond’s The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman‘s stars the unaffecting Shia Labeouf, Mads Mikkelsen and Evan Rachel Wood (who finds herself in a slump of her own when you pair this perf with another turkey in the TriBeCa preemed A Case of You). Expect a year-end or 2014 release for the rom-actioner with an additional North American festival showing prior to release.

Chicago – Judge Dredd is a comic book character, right? In a comic book movie, right? Okay, that might mean – as in this case it does – that there will be some static dialogue and the old good-versus-evil sameness. But the new film “Dredd 3D,” featuring Karl Urban in the title role, forges beyond the ordinary by generating some arresting visual sensations.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This film has it’s own sense of style, an uncommon cinematic feel that is engaging without being overdone. By creating a future world of bleak, drug induced misery, a law enforcement that also acts as judge and jury has its own debatable issues. So to render an almost ballet-like interplay with some of the ultra violence and strange behavior in the picture is an inspiration from the filmmakers. There is the overdone violence and dreck associated with it in “Dredd 3D,” but the eye candy gives up a...

Chicago – The talented New Zealand actor named Karl Urban has had a pretty decent run in some recent blockbusters – does the “Lord of the Rings” Trilogy and “Star Trek” ring a bell? He breaks out in the title role of the upcoming action flick “Dredd 3D,” portraying legendary comic book character Judge Dredd.
Simply unforgettable as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the recently rebooted “Star Trek,” Urban has carved out a niche as a chameleon-like actor, able to manufacture the essence of each role and make it his own. In his latest turn as the formidable Judge Dredd, Urban is a sheer taciturn force of nature, meting out justice in a world destroyed by its own hubris. The unique and highly stylistic film is prime viewing for the 3D movie medium.
