When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019). Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

Indie distributor Neon has shown the power of storytelling in three short, but very successful years. Starting in 2017 with “I, Tonya,” which earned an Oscar for Allison Janney in the supporting actress category, it continued its hot streak in 2019, when Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” made history by winning best picture. The movie took home three additional prizes, including director, original screenplay and international feature.
“Parasite” was not only the distributor’s first best picture win, but it became the first foreign-language picture to win Oscar’s most coveted prize. It was also a massive box office victor and Neon’s highest-grossing film to date. Co-founders Tom Quinn and Tim League may not have envisioned the production company would be a catalyst in breaking down cultural barriers for the industry, but the trend continues with their newest drama, “Ammonite.” Debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday night, the...

A lads’ hunting weekend begins with beers and banter, only to swiftly sober up when two Edinburgh townies wind up shooting entirely the wrong prey. But getting out of the woods isn’t even close to getting in the clear in “Calibre,” a sensationally well-executed nerve-mangler that ought to do for the majestic Scottish Highlands what “Deliverance” did for Appalachia. That is, if smart genre fiends seek out Matt Palmer’s majorly promising debut feature on Netflix — where it’s set to bow globally on June 29, just one week after its home-turf premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival. That’s a mixed blessing for a film that certainly deserves the broad exposure of international streaming, but whose natural habitat is the midnight-movie circuit: Its jackknife shocks, clammy atmospherics and head-filling soundscape would best be enjoyed in the immersive darkness of a cinema.

Robert A. Schuller, former minister on the weekly show "The Hour of Power," is part of the team that has acquired the independent AmericanLife TV Network in an effort to change the face of "family friendly" programming.
Schuller, the only son of Crystal Cathedral founder and current pastor Robert H. Schuller, has partnered with former CBS producer and GodTube.com founder Chris Wyatt at ComStar Networks to purchase AmericanLife for an undisclosed sun.
Aln, formerly owned by the Unification Church, has more than 12.7 million cable subscribers and a library of 700-plus hours of programming. With the slogan "Your Baby Boomer TV choice," it runs mostly reruns. Changes under ComStar will include a network rebranding as a destination for family values and more original content, execs said.
Schuller accepted the "Hour of Power" host role from his father in a public ceremony in 2006 but left abruptly in October, citing irreconcilable differences.
