Early in Wes Craven's 1984 horror film "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the character of Tina (Amanda Wyss) has a violent dream about the demonic, blade-handed Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Freddy has been stalking the dreams of all the neighborhood teens, and the nightmares are so vivid that they fear for their lives. Tina dreams that Freddy is chasing her down an alley, that he cuts off his own fingers and feels nothing, and that he can teleport into her bedroom.
In one of the film's more notorious scenes, Tina is attacked and sliced up by Freddy who, defying gravity, drags her onto the wall of her bedroom and up onto the ceiling as she bleeds to death. Once Tina has perished, her body falls from the ceiling onto her bed, landing in a pool of blood, splattering the walls and the face of her poor helpless boyfriend Rod (Nick Corri...

It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.
Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, had the longest lines throughout the weekend. He was joined by several other A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise alumni: Part 1’s Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakeley; Part 2’s Mark Patton and Kim Myers; Part 4’s Lisa Wilcox and Nicholas Mele; Part 5’s Erika Anderson, Whit Hertford, and Beatrice Boepple; and Freddy vs. Jason‘s Monica Keena.
Other big draws included Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), pro wrestling legend Mick Foley, The Walking Dead‘s Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Chandler Riggs, Emily Kinney, and Katelyn Nacon, Danielle Harris (Halloween), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), and a Fright Night reunion with Chris Sarandon,...

Wes Craven was inspired to write his 1984 horror hit "A Nightmare on Elm Street" after a real-life case of what was called Sudden Unexplained Death Syndrome that, according to several articles in the Los Angeles Times, was afflicting America's Hmong refugee population. People would suffer from horrifying nightmares and soon became afraid to fall asleep. When they did finally lose consciousness, they mysteriously died. The deaths remained unexplained for years. Craven extrapolated a horror movie from these cases, envisioning a nightmarish killer who occupied multiple people's dreams. If the killer killed you in your dream, you died in the waking world.
Craven named his killer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) and explained that Freddy was the ghost of a neighborhood child murderer who had been killed by a group of local parents -- exercising vigilante justice -- years earlier. Somehow, Freddy passed into the realm of the supernatural. Now he "lives" as a burned-up,...

Plot: When filmmaker Mason Maestro throws a private party after production wraps on his new slasher flick, someone dressed like the killer in the movie starts knocking off the partiers one-by-one.
Review: After working together on the stalker film Blind (read my review at This Link) and its sequel Pretty Boy (which we’re still anxiously waiting to see), director Marcel Walz, screenwriter Joe Knetter, and star Sarah French have teamed up once again to launch a production company called Neon Noir. Their first production is That’s a Wrap, a giallo slasher that takes both clear inspiration from the works of Italian filmmakers like Mario Bava and Dario Argento – especially due to the fact that Walz and cinematographer Marcus Friedlander have soaked nearly every shot in colorful lighting – and from the Scream franchise, in that it’s a meta film where the characters work in the horror business.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic horror movie released in 1984, directed and written by Wes Craven. It follows the story of several teenagers living on Elm Street who are systematically targeted by an enigmatic killer with supernatural powers, Freddy Krueger. The teenagers discover that they can only survive if they stay awake, but even this proves futile as Freddy’s powers extend into the dream world.
The film spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, making it one of the most successful franchises in horror movie history. It also became one of the most recognized and beloved icons in cinema history, with Freddy Krueger’s iconic striped sweater and fedora becoming staples in popular culture. A Nightmare on Elm Street has been credited with revitalizing the slasher genre, inspiring many other movies throughout the years.

Universal’s Cocaine Bear from director Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels) arrives in theaters this Friday, February 24, 2023.
In the film, a 500-pound apex predator ingests a staggering amount of cocaine, sparking a coke-fueled rampage that’ll end in a lot of bloodshed. While it appears poised to deliver a raucously entertaining time at the movies, Cocaine Bear isn’t the first horror-comedy or horror movie to feature a drug or serum-enhanced animal on a violent warpath.
This week’s streaming picks highlight five entertaining creature features centered on rampaging animals of all varieties. As always, here’s where to stream them this week.

This post contains spoilers for "The Midnight Club."
"The Midnight Club" hit Netflix over the weekend, and the new horror series features more than just the many familiar faces of past Mike Flanagan works. On the cast list, nestled between Flanaverse favorites like Rahul Kohli and Henry Thomas and talented up-and-comers like Ruth Codd, is one of the best scream queens of all time: actor, producer, and special makeup effects coordinator Heather Langenkamp.
Langenkamp's name will likely be familiar for anyone who grew up on a steady diet of '80s horror films. The actress had her breakout role in 1984's "A Nightmare on Elm Street," where she played terrorized yet resilient 15-year-old Nancy Thompson. When Nancy and her friend Tina (Amanda Wyss) begin having nightmares about a knife-handed man who seems intent on hurting them despite living in their unconscious minds, the legend of Freddy Kreuger is born.

Sleep can literally kill you. That's what makes "A Nightmare on Elm Street" so downright spooky. Upon reading a mind-blowing story about a young Cambodian child, who was terrified to sleep and then died while apparently dreaming, filmmaker Wes Craven conjured up a sleep demon for a screenplay. Freddy Krueger was born out of a real-life wave of similar incidents that swept across America in the 1980s. The 1984 slasher film, produced by New Line's Robert Shaye, saved the company from disaster and put it immovably on the map. It reinvented the slasher genre at a time when the horror subgenre was on its way out. By leaning into the universal human experience of sleep, it brought genuine fear to the surface again.
In the coming years, Freddy Krueger has haunted our dreams across six sequels, a vs. movie with Jason Voorhees, and a 2010 remake, starring Rooney Mara and Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy himself.

“Learn it. Know it. Live it!” The best-remembered teen comedy of the ’80s is also an insightful and unabashed look at real attitudes, behaviors and motivations of young people learning to deal with adult issues. Beyond the hilarious Sean Penn and the luscious Phoebe Cates lies a talent squad of notables and stars-to-be like Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold and Robert Romanus, with appearances by Amanda Wyss, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Nicolas Coppola and Anthony Edwards. The stunning feature directing debut of Amy Heckerling, from Cameron Crowe’s undercover high school exposé, should be acknowledged as a modern classic.

“Turning the tables” is the defining trope of exploitation cinema. The early 1970s was a time when exploitation cinema was in its prime. Wes Craven made The Last House on the Left and Sam Peckinpah made Straw Dogs but there were many other “rape and revenge” films at the time. The same debates about subtext can be had today with violent horror films. Was The Last House on the Left really about the Vietnam War?...

Originality is something I always scream out for, especially when it comes to horror movies. I’m not someone that constantly complains about remakes or sequels but I love to see things I have never seen before, twists on ideas that are well known and Hunter’s Moon at least aims to do this.
It all seems very clichéd at first but I’m sure that’s the idea. We see a family – Mother, father, three daughters – moving from the city into a new house in a small town. Once settled the parents go out for the night, leaving their teenage daughter’s home alone, only for three locals to have invited themselves into the property. From there though,...

"I want you to close that door and lock it!" Because that will save you! Lionsgate has released a trailer for a horror thriller titled Hunter's Moon, a direct-to-vod werewolf film from an executive producer of Live Free or Die Hard, 16 Blocks, and Hostage. A sheriff makes a strange discovery when he's gets called to an orchard where three teenage sisters have been attacked by a band of young delinquents. But it's not just the kids that are tearing people apart. Hunter's Moon stars Thomas Jane as the sheriff, plus Jay Mohr, Sean Patrick Flanery, Katrina Bowden, Amanda Wyss, and India Ennenga. With horror icon Robert Englund likely returning for the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street reboot/sequel, we’re now being told by our sources – the same ones who said Bill Murray would return in Ghosbusters: Afterlife and that a Scream reboot was in the works, both of which we now know to be true – that other significant characters from the original film could be brought back as well. Just like how the upcoming Halloween sequels are bringing back actors from the first installment of their respective franchise, the series that put Freddy Krueger on the map could do the same thing.
Details are still scarce regarding the project as the Craven estate is still taking pitches for it, but it would certainly be nice to see some cast members reprise their roles from the first movie or even return as different characters. Lest we forget that Johnny Depp made his...

It seems a great time to go looking at older and aging actors that were popular in the 80s and either dropped out or are still on the acting scene today, and Amanda Wyss is next on the list. If you don’t remember her then obviously thinking of Better Off Dead would be a good start, but you might also want to think about Nightmare on Elm Street. She was one of the first teens to get sliced and diced, and believe it or not that archive footage would come back for Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and Freddy vs. Jason.

Writer-director Justin Lee carves another notch on his six-shooter — or at least another credit on his IMDb page — with “Badland,” his third indie Western (after the direct-to-video titles “Any Bullet Will Do” and “A Reckoning”) to be released within the past two years. This time out, Lee is working with a budget that allows for more polished production values and a larger number of familiar faces in the supporting cast, all of which may help him attract an audience beyond the chronically underserved demographic of die-hard western fans who often must settle for less when they’re checking out the new DVD/Blu-ray releases at stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart.

One of my favorite parts of the Halloween season is listening to seasonal music, be it classics like “Grimm Grinning Ghosts” from Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride or familiar tracks from horror movies like Alice Cooper’s “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Hell, I’ll even do deep cuts like Frank Vinci’s “Just What I’ve Been Looking For” from Sleepaway Camp or Gowan’s “Moonlight Desires,” most recently used in WolfCop. I’m lucky enough to have friends that make me Halloween mixes, too, giving me plenty to listen to all month long.
My new favorite Halloween album, though, is a little unconventional and a whole lot of fun. Sean Keller, a musician, actor, and screenwriter (Hulu’s All That We Destroy), has recorded the ultimate Halloween mix this year: The Killer Sounds of Halloween, 13 original songs from 13 fake bands.

"I always knew my sins would catch up to me." Cinedigm has debuted a trailer for an indie western titled Badland, not to be confused with Terrence Malick's classic Badlands. Looking surprisingly cosy despite their gruesome fates in the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies, the leading ladies of the franchise posed with Robert Englund for a group shot at the recent Flashback Weekend.
The image features Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Lisa Wilcox, Tuesday Knight, Brooke Theiss, Toy Newkirk, and Lisa Zane, with Wyss sharing the photo on Facebook. She also posted a bonus image of herself and Englund, and you can see both pics in the gallery below.

As if the lineup for Flashback Weekend 2019 wasn’t already impressive enough, Chicago’s best horror convention recently announced that this year’s event will play host to a Night of the Creeps reunion, featuring director Fred Dekker, Tom Atkins, Jason Lively, Jill Whitlow, and Steve Marshall. And for those of you ultra Notc geeks out there, you’ll even have the opportunity to take an in-costume photo with the whole gang, which should be a total thrill for attendees.
Flashback Weekend revealed earlier this year that genre legends Sam Raimi, Robert Englund, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd will all be in attendance this August, making the Chicago horror con a can’t-miss event for horror fans. Other attendees announced for Fbw 2019 include Lance Henriksen, Virginia Madsen, Ted Raimi, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Lisa Wilcox, Tuesday Knight, Alicia Witt, Cerina Vincent, and Return of the Living Dead 3’s Melinda Clarke.

Falling asleep in the woods? Just don't do it, especially if there is ... potentially ... a giant, mythical, and/or dangerous creature wandering around, waiting to devour you! This is my personal take-away from Big Legend, now available to enjoy on a variety of VOD (video on demand) platforms, via Vega Baby Releasing and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Based on Kevin Makely's true experience, the film stars Makely, Todd A. Robinson, Amanda Wyss, with Lance Henriksen, and Adrienne Barbeau. Written and directed by Justin Lee, with that powerful of a lineup -- c'mon, are you kidding me? Amanda Wyss *and* Lance Henriksen *and* Adrienne Barbeau -- Big Legend sounds like my kind of entertainment, a feeling that is reinforced by this clip, which displays just...

Try not to laugh or roll your eyes too hard as you read what Big Legend is about: Bigfoot. Yes, it's true, writer/director Justin Lee's new movie is about Bigfoot but he also seems to be taking a new approach to the legend because this trailer features some serous thriller vibes.
Kevin Makely stars Tyler, an ex-soldier who ventures into the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest in search of his fiance who disappeared in the woods. He teams up with a local hunter (Todd A. Robinson) and the pair find themselves tracking more than they bargained for.

Blessed are the Children is new thriller from co-writer and director Chris Moore, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask Chris a few questions about his inspirations for making the film, his influences and what makes Blessed are the Children stand out in the horror genre.
What can we expect from the film?
I think you can expect a slasher film that’s fun, has something to say, and characters you actually care about. It’s one of the most important things in a horror film, but a lot of people seem fine with just throwing in a gaggle of busty 20-somethings and calling it a day. I want you to actually feel something when these people are terrorized. I never want you rooting for the killers. I usually come up with a story or concept first...

From August 4th through August 6th, Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Con took over the Windy City, and Daily Dead was on hand for all the horror-fied festivities. Throughout all three days, this writer served as one of Flashback’s co-hosts, and brought back some highlights from several of the panels held over the course of the convention.
Below is the first part of our excerpts from the panel featuring the women of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakley. The actresses discussed how the landmark film from Wes Craven helped define a generation of kids who were directly affected by divorce, and they also shared stories from their experiences collaborating with Craven. In case you missed it, you can read part 1 of our A Nightmare on Elm Street panel coverage Here.
One thing I want to discuss is the relationship between Marge and Nancy in Nightmare.

Barbara Crampton has a special place in the hearts of genre fans, particularly those who came of age in the 1980’s video shop era. Making her name in horror classic Re-Animator, she worked steadily throughout that decade and the next in a number of similar cult genre titles.
She has recently enjoyed somewhat of a career renaissance after cropping up in the movies of a new generation of filmmaker who revered her work from those decades before, including the likes of Adam Wingard and Rob Zombie. She also gave a brief yet delicious turn in last year’s Beyond the Gates (a must see for 90’s fantasy-horror aficionados). Her ascent looks set to continue after a recent, meatier role as a deeply unconventional self-help therapist in the dark and enigmatic psychological thriller Sun Choke, which makes it’s streaming debut on Shudder from 9th March.
