Herbert O. Yardley was born on April 13, 1889 in Worthington, Indiana, USA. He was a writer, known for Rendezvous (1935). He died on August 7, 1958 in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA.
Professional Poker Player. His book, Education of a Poker Player, is
now a classic.
An expert cryptographer, he worked for both the American Black Chambers
during WWI, and the OSS during WWII. His book, The American Black
Chamber became an instant success and caused the US to pass laws
revealing state secrets a federal offense and an act of treason.
Lost his right middle finger while working on a commercial secret ink.
He had cut his finger while working on it and the cut got infected. The
ink was a commercial failure, however.
Was the author of numerous books relating to espionage and
cryptography. The most famous are the American Black Chamber and The
Education of a Poker Player.
Inducted into the Cryptologic Hall of Honor in 1999.
