Responding to the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s’ urgent call for help to stay in business, several industry leaders and organizations have stepped up — but not nearly as many as are needed to keep Hollywood’s 101-year-old charity afloat. MPTF hopes to raise at least 300,000 in its star-studded first telethon, which will air December 10 on Ktla in Los Angeles.
Hit by a “perfect storm” of rising expenses and declining revenue during the Covid pandemic, the MPTF said in October that it was facing its “imminent demise” and the very real prospect of closing its doors and going out of business by the end of 2022 unless it received 10 million-12 million in cash donations by the end of the year to meet its bank line compliance and continue ongoing operations.

It’s well known that “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” was originally set to star Julianne Moore as Lee Israel before she left the project in 2015 and was later replaced by Melissa McCarthy. Well, according to Moore, she didn’t leave on her own accord.
“I didn’t leave that movie. I was fired,” Moore revealed Thursday on “Watch What Happens Live” while promoting her new film “Gloria Bell” (watch above). “Nicole [Holofcener] fired me. So, you know, that’s the truth.”
Holofcener, who shared a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination with Jeff Whitty for the film, was initially slated to direct. At the time of Moore’s departure in July 2015, her exit, which occurred a week before production was scheduled to start, was chalked up to the usual “creative differences.”
“I think she didn’t like what I was doing,” Moore continued. “We had just been rehearsing and doing pre-production and stuff,...

Melissa McCarthy landed an Oscar nomination for her breakout turn in Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids, which started a string of comedy blockbusters for the pair. Now she’s back in the conversation with Can You Ever Forgive Me?, which may be considered one of her first dramatic turns, but only to those who have failed to catch the deftness of her talent on display even in the most outrageous comedies. She plays Lee Israel, a respected biographer struggling to pay the bills who turns to a new form of writing: meticulously forging letters from famous writers like Ernest Hemingway, Dorothy Parker and Noel Coward for $400 a pop to pay rent and medicine for her sick cat, until her scheme unravels and the FBI is knocking at her door. Whether comedy or drama, McCarthy explains why it’s all the same to her, and allowed her to frame a picture perfect...

Melissa McCarthy will star in the dark comedy film adaptation of Lee Israel's memoir "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" for Fox Searchlight.
McCarthy will portray Israel, a successful profile writer who turned to deception after her work fell out of favor. Abetted by her loyal friend Jack, she began selling forged letters from deceased writers and actors. When they started to raise suspicion, she turned to stealing actual letters from library archives and selling them.
McCarthy takes over from Julianne Moore who was initially set to star but exited last year due to creative differences. "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" director Marielle Heller is attached to helm from a script by Nicole Holofcener.
Anne Carey, David Yarnell and Amy Nauiokas will produce and shooting begins early next year.
