- On January 19, 1976, Yeager and his wife returned to their home. His wife went back outside to chase their dog back inside. Yeager took the trash outside, where he encountered three youthful burglars. He suffered a gunshot wound, and died in the ambulance transporting him. The three teenagers were apprehended, convicted, and served time in the California Youth Authority (CYA) prison system.
- 'Hollywood Name Dropper' - The working title of Yeager's book in development prior to his death. He completed four chapters. In 2016, Jim Yeager, his 63 year-old son, hopes to complete the volume by using storage boxes of memorabilia and information left behind, and preserved by Yeager's widow.
