The cinematic journey of Hiroyuki Sanada and his contribution to the fusion of Western and Eastern storytelling have been nothing short of remarkable. Fresh off the heels of his presence in John Wick: Chapter 4, Sanada’s Shōgun success has been a cultural touchstone. But does this success guarantee his quick return to the producer’s chair?
Sanada is involved as a producer and cast member of the acclaimed FX limited series. With a career as dynamic as the Japanese actor’s, his keen sense of storytelling speaks volumes. Indeed, his dedication to cultural integrity and his case-by-case approach to production roles serve as a deliberate blueprint for his future endeavors in the film industry, as he enjoys shaping narratives.
Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in Shōgun
But, despite his success with Shōgun, Sanada’s desire to create from scratch as a producer may not be realized in the near future.

Bill Kong is cautious, vastly experienced and has an impeccable reputation as a key gateway between Hollywood and China to maintain. He is someone far more likely to deadpan than gush.
So, to hear him getting into high gear with a pitch for his bucket list martial arts movie project “The Furious” immediately invites comparison with previous Kong-produced action pictures including Oscar-winner “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Jet Li’s Fearless” or the Zhang Yimou-directed “Hero.”
“I’m going to do an action movie that rocks the world. And to prove that Hong Kong still has something to give the film industry. I want to show that Asian people can still make an action movie that is better than the rest of the world,” Kong tells Variety.
Significantly, “The Furious” is a project made by Hong Kong, rather than made in Hong Kong. Kong’s Edko Films is financing and producing.

Whereas his last project “Happy Times”, a blend of comedy and tragedy, garnered favorable reviews but to this day remains one of the director's smaller features, Zhang Yimou's next movie, the wuxia drama “Hero” marked a huge success for its director, both critically and commercially. Even today, “Hero” is one of the fan favorites among the many films by Zhang, and together with such features as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” started a renaissance of the genre, to which the Chinese filmmaker has contributed many other stories, albeit with lesser success. In the 2002 film he tells the story of the founding of China's first dynasty, which resulted in the unification of the country after seven warring states had fought for many years to rule it entirely. Apart from being visually stunning, even by today's standards, “Hero” is a timeless story about the passions of men and how they can manipulate...

Singer and actor Richie Ren is no stranger when it comes to Hong Kong cinema, as he is best known for his stand out performance in Johnnie To's “Breaking News” (2004) and later in “Trivisa” (2015). In “Fierce Cop”, a Mainland online film streaming on Youku video platform is his first venture into the martial arts genre.

I’ve been a big Donnie Yen fan for years. This martial artist/actor has been a mainstay of Chinese action movies – comedic and dramatic – for decades. For Western audiences, he may be best known for his appearances in several films about China’s legendary real-life hero Ip Man. Besides Yen’s fighting skills, he invariably projects the calm integrity of a Gary Cooper. His latest high-profile role on our screens was the blind, yet super-lethal, and highly-principled assassin co-star in John Wick 4.
Donnie is now over 60. So, like Jackie Chan, his time as a credible action hero may be waning. Preparing for the next phase of his career is the only reason I can imagine for his producing and starring in this rather uninspired family drama, Polar Rescue (a...

Bill Skarsgård has slowly but surely established himself as one of the most versatile actors of this generation. With a number of quirky and unconventional roles under his belt, Skarsgård keeps pushing the envelope of his skills with each new character he plays on the screen.
The actor has been a part of several notable franchises in his career. Therefore, it was not surprising when John Wick came calling for him. He is not new to playing antagonists, in fact, he excels at playing morally dubious characters.
He did it again as Marquis Vincent de Gramont in the fourth installment of this Keanu Reeves-led series. It was a knock-out performance, but one aspect of his role faced a lot of flak from the public, so much so that it could have taken attention away from the film itself.

At some juncture, every action star must face their greatest challenge in their own mortality. As Donnie Yen enters his 60's, the inevitability of time means his action career on screen is now entering its twilight years. “Polar Express” therefore represents a slight change in direction. A role that focuses as much on his acting prowess as on his physical. With Well Go USA releasing this latest work, it's an opportunity to see how he fares.

Contrary to what children of the '90s might assume, "Monkey Man" is not a feature-length film about the "mystery wrapped in an enigma" that is the Hillwood vigilante Monkeyman from "Hey Arnold," as awesome as that sounds. It's actually something even cooler, believe it or not: an original starring vehicle for Dev Patel, who's only one of the most exciting actors currently doing it. Things had gone radio silent for several years on the news front surrounding the film, only for Universal to nonchalantly drop its trailer online near the end of January, sending the internet into a riotous frenzy at the sight of Patel going full John Wick on a seemingly never-ending parade of goons in Mumbai. (Not to mention by far the best use of a tuk-tuk in a movie this side of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.")

"Give my boy back!" Well Go USA has set a VOD / DVD release date for this Chinese survival thriller. Polar Rescue is finally getting a US release this March after originally debuting in China back in late 2022. It also goes under the title Come Back Home, which is a bit more emotional and less direct than the bland "Polar Rescue" that it is now. After a young boy gets lost during a bitter snowstorm, his frantic parents (starring both Donnie Yen and Cecilia Han) seek help from the local police, who are soon faced with a desperate race against the clock as hours tick by with no sign of the child anywhere. Donnie Yen stars as the father, De, who decides to go out in this dangerous cold and snow his own to find him. The cast also includes Jia Bing as Qian Jun and Xu Tang as Xiao Jiang.

Classic 1970s television series Kung Fu is heading to the big screen, and Donnie Yen will star – more here.
A feature film based on the classic 1970s TV series Kung Fu has been in development for some time, and now it seems to be moving forward at Universal Pictures and 87North.
According to Deadline, John Wick director David Leitch will helm the film from a screenplay by Stephen Chin, with Ip Man star Donnie Yen set to play Kwai Chang Caine, a role first inhabited by David Carradine.
Martial arts icon Bruce Lee famously auditioned for the lead role in the original 1972 series, but lost out, of course, to Carradine. He played Caine, a spiritual monk who roams the Old West in the 1800s, wandering into confrontations and fist fights every week. With a film based on one cult TV series on the way, it appears that David Leitch is not done digging into nostalgia for movies. He and his 87North production partners are now developing a film based on 1970s series Kung Fu, with Donnie Yen lined up to star.
Stephen Chin has written the script for the new film, which will put a new spin on the show. Created by Ed Spielman, the original series ran between 1972 and 1975 on ABC and starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a master martial artist who fled China after his master was murdered.

David Leitch’s 87North is getting ready to reboot the classic martial arts/ western series Kung Fu, and it looks like they’ve found their Caine: the one and only Donnie Yen. The press release doesn’t reveal if Yen is actually playing Caine, but it seems like a no-brainer. The series was infamously developed by Bruce Lee as a starring vehicle for himself, only for the role to be eventually cast with David Carradine in the lead. In the end, it worked out fine, with Bruce Lee gaining immortality with his kung-fu movies for Golden Harvest in Hong Kong (which would have never happened had he been tied to a series), while Carradine became iconic as the enigmatic Caine.

Stephen Chin wrote the screenplay. Stephen L’Hereaux will also produce, and Ed Spielman, creator of the original Kung Fu television series, will executive produce.
The original ABC series starred David Carradine as a master martial artist who fled China after his master was murdered. He wandered the Old West helping the downtrodden and weathering rampant racism while eluding assassins trying to kill him. He was a peaceful man until provoked, which happened at least once an episode.
With his ground-breaking work on and off camera, Donnie Yen is among the exceedingly few actors of his generation to work at the highest levels...

If there is something positive about the existence of streaming platforms in recent times, it's the explosion of quality television series that we haven't experienced for several decades. There is something for everyone, even for TV sceptics who are not easily convinced to step out of the cinema or from what they concern as a serious screening content. Almost four years ago, during the Mastercard event at the Venice Film Festival, Brian de Palma confessed that he was hooked to the comedy-drama series “Dead To Me” starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, admitting that he was watching television more than ever before due to a big improvement in quality of productions. Liz Feldman wasn't in the audience, but I was, glad to hear that such a legend and I are sharing the same passion for the show.

The Action Scene is a column that explores the construction of action set pieces in order to deepen appreciation for and spark discussion about action cinema. The following column examines my fifteen favorite action scenes of 2023. In their variety, virtuosity, and visceral power, they embody the vibrancy of contemporary action cinema. Like last year’s roundup, the focus is on action scenes—relatively sustained, heightened, self-contained expressions of action filmmaking craft—so some otherwise strong action films didn’t make the cut, and not all of the films featured here are necessarily compelling beyond their set pieces. All included films made their official, non-festival, US theatrical and/or streaming debut in 2023. For the sake of variety, I’ve limited myself to one scene per film. And now, on to the action. As with previous years, these scenes have been grouped by theme to foreground patterns and enhance ease of perusal.

"John Wick" is the little action franchise that could. The series has become so huge and operatic that it's easy to forget that at one point, no one seemed very interested. When it came to the first film, producers struggled to find theatrical distributors, and star Keanu Reeves was coming off a stirring of box office disappointments. There was talk of sending the first film to VOD, where it might die an ignoble death. And then Lionsgate swooped in to distribute the flick theatrically, and everything changed. While the first film was not a box office smash, it was a hit.
Beyond that, though, it garnered a passionate fanbase wowed by both the killer action scenes and the world-building. Things would only go up from there, with each subsequent sequel growing larger and expanding the mythology further, while also helping turn Keanu Reeves into a superstar again. In the series,...

And so, another year is in the books, with 2023, the year of Barbenheimer now ending. It was a dramatic one for entertainment, with shelved movies, surprising hits and misses and dual strikes that brought the industry to a standstill for months. Nevertheless, there were plenty of great films, so here’s JoBlo’s official top 10 for the year. Before we start, there are a few honourable mentions to get out of the way. Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One was a surprising box office disappointment, to the extent that the next film is set to drop Dead Reckoning from the title, but it was still an expertly assembled action film with some of the best stuntwork and style of the year. I also thoroughly enjoyed Creed III and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, with both just falling a tad short of making my top 10. At the same time, other films like Bradley Cooper’s Maestro,...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with action franchise smash John Wick: Chapter 4. The fourth installment in the Chad Stahelski-directed series was penned by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch (based on characters created by Derek Kolstad) in their first turn with Baba Yaga — even if the titular revenge artist, played by Keanu Reeves, speaks only 380 words of dialogue.
From Lionsgate/Thunder Road Films/87 Eleven, John Wick: Chapter 4 sees the ex-hitman uncover a path to defeating crime lord council The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe, and forces that turn old friends into foes.

Pop Quiz, Hot Shot! There are myriad homes in LA you could break into. However, the one you’re thinking about robbing belongs to Keanu Reeves. What do you do? Please allow me to answer this for you. The answer is you raid any other home! Any other home at all!
TMZ reports that Keanu Reeves’ home was burglarized on Wednesday evening when looters in ski masks broke into the John Wick franchise actor’s home. LAPD officers responded to an anonymous call about possible trespassers near 7 pm. By the time cops arrived, the thieves had fled the scene. After a few hours of silence, the cops returned near 1 am when an alarm on the property was triggered. Cameras caught the robbers on film, smashing a window and breaking into the house. Hayden Christensen, who has played Anakin Skywalker in various Star Wars movies and series, has signed with Independent Artist Group for representation.
The actor famously nabbed the coveted part of the heroic-yet-tragic young man who would become Darth Vader in George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and concluded his fall from grace with Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
Seventeen years later, he reprised his role for the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, a massive hit for the streamer, and the recently finished Ahsoka, which also proved to be a hit.

The episode of Revisited covering Hellboy II: The Golden Army was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Following the beloved Hellboy adaptation that was released in 2004 by Guillermo Del Toro, fans wanted more. As reviewed on a previous video, that one is excellent, so it was not surprising when the sequel was announced. Thus, in 2008, Hellboy II: The Golden Army (watch it Here) was released, and it ruled!
Let’s start with the rating here and it’s a complicated one for me. It’s actually hard to rate it because my reviewer brain, the part of me that is highly cinematically educated wants to give it an eight out of ten, which isn’t bad, but my heart wants to say it can’t be rated on a normal scale.

John Wick: Chapter 4 became the entry that solidified the franchise as a big moneymaker. And although the ending had left the future open for possible sequels, Keanu Reeves has not been secretive about how much harder it is to keep up with the action and begged for a definite ending for the character. However, despite several spin-offs being released, the studio now smells the money and wants to immediately develop a direct follow-up to Chapter 4 with Reeves in tow. People keep asking if he’s back, and he hasn’t really had an answer, but yeah, the studio is thinking he’s back.
ScreenRant has reported that Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake has stated at a recent earnings call, courtesy of ComicBook.com, that the studio is now including a Chapter 5 in the development of future franchise content. Drake has said, “On the Wick side we got multiple spin-offs and a Wick Five.

When most people think of martial arts masters, names like Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen, Chuck Norris, Michael Jai White, Cynthia Rothrock, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Michelle Yeoh come to mind. Still, Hollywood is ripe with what some would call unsung industry heroes, such as Scott Adkins, a powerhouse of talent on several fronts. In a detailed article featured in The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Ritman delves into Adkins’ origin, a quest for the spotlight, and reputation for being one of the hardest working badasses in Tinseltown.
In addition to being a charismatic actor, Adkins is a gifted student of many martial arts disciplines, including Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, Ninjitsu, Capoeira, Krav Maga, Wushu, Muay Thai, Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, Kickboxing and Brazilian and Jui Jitsu. His passion for elevating his body and spirit began near the age of 10 when the captivating Bruce Lee inspired Adkins to study Judo. After getting mugged...

During his press tour for John Wick 4, Keanu Reeves was asked about the two “martial arts legends” in Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada he got to work with in the film and made a point of adding Scott Adkins to this list. These three, he said, were “real martial artists” (as opposed to himself, a “movie martial artist”), and asserted that “Adkins’ technique, his passion, is on another level.”
While that was high praise indeed from cinema’s current bloodied action franchise king, for the legions of international fans Adkins has amassed in the two decades he’s been spin-kicking, backflipping and acrobatically whooping ass on screen, it was no more than he deserved. Across some 60-plus titles, the Brit has shown off both his prowess in more martial arts disciplines than most people have heard of — including Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, Ninjitsu, Capoeira, Krav Maga, Wushu, Muay Thai, Kung Fu,...

John Wick: Chapter 4 may have been presented somewhat as the conclusion of the story, but it’s also the entry that put the franchise in the billion-dollar club. Lionsgate is now jumping at the chance to do more Wick sequels with the series’ star Keanu Reeves continuing the role. This is despite the ending of the film having what can be interpreted as the death of John Wick. However, the door is cracked open for an opportunity to bring Keanu back with an easy explanation should The Matrix star and the filmmakers choose to come back for more knuckles, kicks and bullets.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4.
Keanu Reeves was tired at the end of filming the action-heavy John Wick: Chapter 4, and reportedly asked franchise producer Basil Iwanyk to let the character rest in peace.
In an interview with Collider, Iwanyk discussed the end of the film – and the possibility of additional chapters.
At the end of #4, Reeves’ Wick has a battle royale with nemeses Donnie Yen’s Caine and Bill Skarsgård’s Marquis on the steps of the Sacre Coeur in Paris. Longish story short, Wick seems to expire after the showdown.
But nah. Or at least probably nah.
“After the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movie, making these films is so exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally,” said Iwanyk in the interview. “By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him. The...

This Star Wars: Ahsoka article contains spoilers.
So much of Ahsoka‘s third episode feels like classic Star Wars, from Sabine’s blind training nodding back to A New Hope to the space battle that combines elements from both the Original and Prequel Trilogies for one of the best dogfights ever made for Disney+. But that doesn’t mean Ahsoka has skipped out on bringing back a bunch of stuff from Rebels this time around. In fact, one major cameo allows this Disney+ series to pick up exactly where its animated predecessor left off.
Here are all the Star Wars easter eggs and callbacks we spotted in “Time to Fly”:

It's no secret that George Lucas' original vision for "Star Wars" was heavily influenced by Japanese cinema, specifically the samurai, or chanbara, sword-fighting films of his youth. "Seven Samurai" and, of course, Akira Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" were direct inspirations for "A New Hope" and the misadventures of C-3Po and R2-D2. Any student who has studied martial arts will also be able to see a direct link between the ancient techniques of Japanese swordsmanship and the fighting style of Jedi Knights throughout the entire saga. Beginning with the classic duel between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader aboard the Death Star, the original film's stunt coordinator Peter Diamond incorporated the basic strikes, parries, and blocks that are taught in kendo. Even the concept of balancing one's internal Qi ("chi") energy became the foundation for the Force.
