Epix has closed the final link in the chain. At long last, the pay TV channel owned by MGM has set a distribution pact with At&T’s DirecTV.
A deal with the nation’s largest traditional Mvpd has long eluded the premium movie network that was created as a joint venture of Paramount Pictures, MGM and Lionsgate in 2008. Epix bowed as a linear and digital service ithe following year, but met with resistance from the largest cable operators and leading satcaster DirecTV.
DirecTV and others maintained that consumers didn’t need another movie channel at a time when theatrical releases have become more widely available than ever before via streaming and on-demand platforms. Epix wound up cutting a lucrative distribution deal with Netflix in 2010 that further alienated traditional MVPDs who even then eyeing as competition the company destined to become a worldwide streaming juggernaut.

At&T Audience Network has ordered a 10-episode second season of its critically praised original comedy series Loudermilk. Production is scheduled to begin this July in Vancouver with the premiere slated for fall.
Created by writer-director Peter Farrelly and Bobby Mort, the Emmy-winning scribe from The Colbert Report, Season 1 of Loudermilk centered on Sam Loudermilk, a recovering alcoholic and substance abuse counselor with an extremely bad attitude about, well, everything. He is unapologetically uncensored and manages to piss off everyone in his life. Although he has his drinking under control, Loudermilk discovers that when your life is a complete mess, getting clean is the easy part.
Ron Livingston (Office Space) stars as Sam Loudermilk along with Will Sasso (Happy Gilmore) as Ben, Laura Mennell (Watchmen) as Allison and Anja Savcic as Claire.
Farrelly and Mort will be back for Season 2 as writer-creators. They’ll executive produce with Mark Burg and producer Big Branch Productions’ Bart Peters.

DirecTV customers will have The Weather Channel back on their lineup starting Wednesday.
The move comes nearly three months after the TV distributor dropped the channel after the two parties failed to reach a carrier agreement. The financial terms of their new contract were not disclosed, but in a release, The Weather Channel said they had “agreed to reduce reality programming by half” on weekdays.

The companies aren’t disclosing financial terms, but DirecTV appears to have won some major concessions, including an apology. The Weather Channel (to appear on channel 362) will cut its reality programming by half on weekdays. It also will return instant local weather and authorize DirecTV subscribers to stream its video programming to multiple devices inside and outside the home. And, in a really unusual twist, TWC chief David Kenny apologized to “DirecTV and their customers for the disruption of our service and for initiating a public campaign. Our viewers deserve better than a public dispute, and we pledge to reward their loyalty with exceptional programming and more weather focused news.” DirecTV Chief Content Officer Dan York crowed that while the dispute was “frustrating for many of our customers … their patience was ultimately rewarded with a better deal and a better product.” Related: TWC Pushing Public Safety Image After DirecTV Blackout...

The Weather Channel doesn’t think so, even though the No. 1 satellite service dropped it on January 14.“We have resumed discussions with DirecTV and hope to resolve our differences,” says Weather Channel rep Shirley Powell. But DirecTV strengthened its bargaining position today by reaching a multi-year agreement to offer WeatherNation. The deal “ensures our customers will have a service that is fully committed to providing all weather related information all the time,” DirecTV Chief Content Officer Dan York says. “The overwhelmingly positive comments we’ve been receiving from customers made the decision to extend our agreement easy and expedient.” Related: TWC Pushing Public Safety Image After DirecTV Blackout DirecTV wanted to cut its payments to Weather Channel, saying that the channel too often offers reality programs such as Deadliest Space Weather and Coast Guard Alaska instead of the latest local weather. But TWC – owned by NBCUniversal, Blackstone Group and Bain Capital — wanted a penny increase.
