Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which recently wrapped production after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes. This film will be bringing popular video game character Johnny Cage to the screen, with Karl Urban of Dredd, Star Trek, and The Boys taking on the role. Despite Urban’s established awesomeness, he was an unexpected choice for Johnny Cage, and there are some fans who have let it be known that they would have chosen someone else to play the part. We’ll have to wait and see how it turned out, but one thing we know right now is that Urban had a great time working on the movie, calling it “most action packed fun I’ve ever had on a film!”

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which started filming at the end of June… then had to shut down production when the Screen Actors Guild strike hit a couple weeks later. That strike came to an end last week, and it was rumored that Mortal Kombat 2 would go back into production in early 2024. When producer Todd Garner saw that rumor, he tweeted, “This is not true. We are filming before then…” Way before then, as it turns out. Garner and cast member Karl Urban have both confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2 is already filming again!
Urban confirmed by sharing a picture that shows him hanging out with some of his castmates. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

There’s buzzing excitement in the air as details about ‘Mortal Kombat 2‘ and the ‘Minecraft‘ movie continue to emerge. The latest news comes directly from producer Todd Garner, who has challenged previous reports on the filming schedules of these highly anticipated projects.
Addressing ‘Mortal Kombat 2,’ Garner has been actively engaging with fans and media on social media. Recently, he responded to a report by Deadline, which suggested a delayed filming schedule for the movie. Contradicting this, Garner affirmed on Twitter that the production will begin much sooner than the speculated date. “This is not true. We are filming before then…” he stated, bringing a wave of excitement among the fans. While he didn’t provide a specific start date, his promise of an earlier timeline has increased anticipation.

It’s been two years since the release of the live action Mortal Kombat reboot, and a sequel is on the way soon. Filming on Mortal Kombat 2 actually kicked off earlier this summer, you may recall, but it didn’t last long due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on at the time. But have no fear, because production on the movie sequel gets back underway real soon.
Responding to a report this week that suggested Mortal Kombat 2 will begin filming in early 2024, producer Todd Garner notes on Twitter that it’s actually kicking off even sooner.
“This is not true. We are filming before then,” Garner teases.
He writes in a follow-up tweet, “I promise I will keep the Mk Kommunity posted as soon as I have info on start date, etc. Everyone else is just speculating… or posting for clicks.”

A couple weeks ago, Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid rounded out the cast of the sequel – which is apparently simply titled Mortal Kombat II. Last weekend, we saw a picture of several cast members in a restaurant together. And now Ludi Lin (who plays Liu Kang in these new films) took to Instagram to reveal that filming has officially started! He shared pictures of a clapperboard and his salad, and those can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The screenplay for Mortal Kombat II has been written by Jeremy Slater, who was the lead writer on the Marvel / Disney+ series Moon Knight. Last year, Slater said that working on the project had been “really fun so far. … I’m working really closely with the director and the studios, and the game guys, and I think—I can’t say anything about the actual story, but I think they...

Producer James Wan revealed last night on Ig that filming is officially underway on Mortal Kombat 2, which has Simon McQuoid returning to the director’s seat from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater (“The Exorcist,” “Moon Knight”).
Martyn Ford (“The Sandman”), Desmond Chiam (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), Ana Thu Nguyen (Suka) and Damon Herriman (House of Wax, The Nightingale) signed on a few weeks ago to play Shao Kahn, Edenian King Jerrod, Queen Sindel, and Netherrealm demon Quan Chi respectively.
It’s interesting to note that Herriman previously voiced the role of Kabal in the 2021 film.
Newcomers to the sequel also include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.
Plot details remain scarce for the sequel, though the new cast additions continue to signal a bigger, bloodier affair packed with fatalities.

Johnny Cage is an action movie star and martial artist who first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat game released in 1992. The character didn’t appear in the recent Mortal Kombat movie, but a post-credit scene teased that he would be on his way. It was announced earlier this year that Karl Urban was in talks to play Johnny Cage. I’m excited to see the actor in costume for the first time, but I have no doubt that he’s going to knock the role out of the park.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is returning to the helm for the sequel that we’ll refer to as Mortal Kombat 2 until someone tells us otherwise. Filming on this follow-up is expected to begin soon (unless the writers strike causes a delay), and over the last month and a half McQuoid has been steadily building up his cast. The Boys star Karl Urban has been cast to play Johnny Cage; Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is set to play Princess Kitana; and Tati Gabrielle (You) is taking on the role of Jade, the friend and bodyguard of Princess Kitana. Now Deadline reports that four more actors have joined the cast, filling the roles of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, Kahn’s wife Queen Sindel, Netherrealm demon Quan Chi, and Jerrod, who was the King of Edenia (and married to Sindel) until Edenia’s warriors lost in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Adeline Rudolph is going from Riverdale to Outworld for New Line‘s Mortal Kombat 2. Rudolph is the second Chilling Adventures cast member to sign on for the Mortal Kombat sequel after Tati Gabrielle announced she’s in talks to play Jade in the follow-up to director Simon McQuoid’s 2021 smash. McQuoid directs the sequel, featuring Karl Urban as the fast-talking Hollywood misfit fighter Johnny Cage.
Written by Jeremy Slater, Mortal Kombat 2 continues the story established in the McQuoid reboot, focusing on an eclectic group of fighters pulled into a contest of champions for the fate of Earthrealm against the sinister forces of Outworld. New Line’s Mortal Kombat was released at the onset of the pandemic in theaters and on HBO Max, becoming one of the streaming platform’s most significant hits.

A short amount of internet research does not reveal, sadly, a canonical reason why "Mortal Kombat" is spelled with a "K." Midway's "Mortal Kombat" first hit arcades in 1992, and was notable for its blood and gore and for its graphics. "Mortal Kombat" incorporated photographs of actual actors in colorful outfits and in fight poses who were then animated into the game. Unlike its more cartoonish competitor "Street Fighter," "Mortal Kombat" had an edge.
Over the years, the premise of "Mortal Kombat" became complicated to the point of risibility. It seems a fighting tournament is held every X number of years, and people from across multiple dimensions, including robots and demons, gather to compete. The winner will receive ultimate power or something. It doesn't really matter. The point is getting strange, colorful, violent characters in an area so that we may witness one forcibly removing the spine from the other.

Lewis Tan is the face of a big ongoing franchise, playing Mma fighter turned world-saving hero in "Mortal Kombat," which currently has a sequel in the works. It turns out that Tan very nearly landed another huge gig around the same time: Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Indeed, had things gone another way, it could be Tan suiting up as Shang-Chi and not Simu Liu. And it sounds very much like Tan was in the running right until the very end.
Tan spoke about the experience to Entertainment Tonight around the time that 2021's "Mortal Kombat" was coming out. He explained what it was like landing the role of Cole Young, a character created specifically for the movie. Here's what he had to say about it:
"That was a crazy moment. I had just gotten back from Japan. I just lost a crazy job - a really, really high-caliber level job.

Although Johnny Cage didn’t appear in the recent Mortal Kombat movie, a post-credit scene teased that he would be on his way. Mortal Kombat 2 will once again be directed by Simon McQuoid, with Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) writing the script. Production is expected to start this June in Australia.

A sequel to the Mortal Kombat movie from 2021 is on the way, and The Wrap reports tonight that Karl Urban (“The Boys”) is in final talks to join the cast as Johnny Cage.
The Wrap reminds, “Johnny Cage was introduced in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game in 1992. Johnny Cage is depicted as an action movie star with an extensive martial arts background. He is often characterized as a swashbuckling, Hollywood fighting movie star who places great importance on his image and consistently behaves in a cool manner.”
The star of Amazon’s hit series “The Boys,” Karl Urban turns 50 years old next month, so this particular take on the classic Mortal Kombat character is sure to be different than expected. Many fans had been lobbying for WWE superstar The Miz to play Cage in the upcoming sequel, but Urban’s casting will bring a whole new facet to the character.

Although Mortal Kombat received fairly mixed reviews upon its release on HBO Max two years ago, it was also the streaming service’s most-watched movie of the year. The studio officially got the ball rolling on a sequel last year, and it seems that Mortal Kombat 2 is aiming to start filming this summer.
Replying to a report from Geek Vibes Nation on Twitter, Mortal Kombat producer Todd Garner seemingly confirmed that the sequel will start shooting in Australia this June by responding, “I was wondering why I had an apt in Australia…” Mortal Kombat 2 will once again be directed by Simon McQuoid, with Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) writing the script. With filming on Mortal Kombat 2 just over the horizon, we should start hearing more about the sequel before too long. It’s expected that filming should wrap by September.

Back in July, it was confirmed that Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is returning to the helm for the sequel that we’ll refer to as Mortal Kombat 2 until someone tells us otherwise. Now Mortal Kombat star Lewis Tan – who says he has been training his ass off to reprise the role of Cole Young in the film – has promised that the sequel will be “absolutely insane” and “way bigger” than its predecessor.
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema released Mortal Kombat to theatres and the HBO Max streaming service on the same day in April of 2021. Lewis Tan, the actor who played Cole Young in the live-action "Mortal Kombat" adaptation and the mutant superhero Shatterstar in "Deadpool 2" has been tweeting little emoji teasers for the last few months regarding "Deadpool 3," sparking rumors that Shatterstar will appear in the upcoming film due out in 2024. An actor confirming or teasing an appearance in an upcoming superhero film is nothing new, but Tan's tweet is especially curious, considering Shatterstar fell into the rotating blades of a helicopter and splattered his green, alien blood all over the place. Shatterstar is dead, done-zo, and shredded to bits ... or so we thought.
The rumors started after Hugh Jackman was announced as returning to play Wolverine in the film, as Tan replied with some emojis indicating "Deadpool 2" was not the last we'd seen of him. Of course, he could always be trolling as actors are known to do, but after today's additional tease on Twitter,...

It sounds silly to think that anyone is still a bit sore about Cole Young taking the coveted spot that should have gone to Johnny Cage in the last Mortal Kombat movie, but it’s not entirely inaccurate. So many fans were ready to see Cage in the most recent movie that seeing someone like Cole felt like a slap in the face since he didn’t add much to the movie and folks were pumped to see Cage show up. But when it became obvious that Cole was the focus of the movie thanks to his connection to Scorpion it was

Jeremy Slater (“Moon Knight”) has been hired to write the screenplay for the sequel to New Line’s hit 2021 action adventure “Mortal Kombat” based on the blockbuster video game franchise, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
“Mortal Kombat” was released in April 2021 during the early days of the pandemic simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max opening No. 1 at the box office and ranking among the top feature titles ever on HBO Max since the platform launched.

After nearly two decades, fans of the Mortal Kombat lore were finally graced with a reboot featuring favorites Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Kano, Melina, Raiden, and Shang Tsung. However, the protagonist of the film wasn’t an Mk original, as the writers opted to introduce a new fighter into the mix, Cole Young, who happens to be the son of Scorpion. While the 2021 reboot wasn’t the critical darling that it could’ve been, the film still received high marks from long-time fans. However, most people who are knowledgeable about the Mortal Kombat franchise agree that Cole Young was a bland and generic choice

Putting it straight, the Mortal Kombat reboot was a definite step above Annihilation and even the original movie, but the inclusion of Cole Young and the fact that the characters that died might be coming back in the next movie kind of ruined the whole idea of what had just happened. Plus, making Cole Young the main focus instead of allowing Liu Kang to head up the action as before was a bit of a mistake, as some fans thought. It’s also worth noting that while there were a few notably good actors in the movie, there wasn’t a headliner

It’s a bit hard to tear into the Mortal Kombat movie simply because a lot of people were really hoping that it would eclipse the first two that were created back in the 90s and in terms of a lot of special effects and actual fatalities being shown it succeeded. But where it started falling off the rails was in introducing Cole Young, a guy that has no connection to the games or the overall story of Mk apart from being Scorpion’s descendant and, in reality, a lousy fighter when compared to the rest of the Mk fighters. Seriously, this

Looking at the latest Mortal Kombat movie it’s fair to say that it wasn’t entirely centered on one character as it tried to stretch out and include other characters that people actually knew something about, but Cole Young, the descendant of Hanzo Hasashi, aka Scorpion, was kind of a disappointment. Had the movie focused instead on the actual feud between the Lin Kuei and the Shirai Ryu it might have been easier to accept and less likely that it would be facing the kind of criticism it has since its release. One glaring omission, at least until the end of

It’s kind of funny to hear that the reason why Rain wasn’t in the Mortal Kombat movie was that the script didn’t do his character any justice. The reason it’s funny is that Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, was a character that no one knew about and had only one thing going for him, the fact that he was Hanzo Hasashi’s descendant. Apart from that, he was a completely fabricated character that had never been in the games, which is something that a lot of fans were tripping over since Cole didn’t bring a lot to the movie in

It Has Begun!
Or it will. Mortal Kombat came out and did all right for itself. The reboot has its highs and its lows, but one thing I will say it does a better job at is setting up a sequel. The 1995 original had a decent enough cliffhanger with a kaiju-sized Shao Kahn popping in and everyone ready to just kick his ass, but at the time, there weren’t too many promising places to take the sequel.
The first movie was just so front-loaded that the second didn’t have enough to rope us in. That’s why it’s probably for the best that Johnny Cage is currently being treated purely as a sequel hook. He’s the carrot on the stick meant to keep us interested in keeping this franchise going.

Stunt coordinator Kyle Gardiner worked with director Simon McQuoid and fight choreographer Chan Griffin to deliver the extreme fights in the “Mortal Kombat” movie. Combining signature moves with well-structured action, the stunt team had plenty to work with for this action-packed fantasy flick.
Free from the PG-13 boundaries applied to 1995’s enjoyably campy Paul W.S. Anderson-directed adaptation, this R-rated 2021 effort puts much more emphasis on the brutal nature of these bouts, complete with the gory fatalities this gaming franchise is known for.
With over a dozen combatants involved in nearly 20 different individual fights, it was important to add a unique element to every battle to keep from seeing the same thing over and over. As Gardiner explains, “There was a mood board for each fight, and it created a tone and a level of violence Simon was after, keeping the fights from blending into each other.”

Brutality
James Corden tested his might — and his voiceover mettle — last night, when the CBS late-night host played a ’90s version of himself laying down the vocals for that “Mortal Kombat” techno track.
At first, he got the lyrics right — but the energy was way off. Then the delivery was terrible.
And then, following some direct direction from his producer, Corden fully blanked on the words. It’s one line, dude — check the poster directly behind you. Or the one to the right of you. Or the lyrics sheet on the music stand in front of you. Or literally just commit two words totaling 12 letters to memory.
Finally, Corden got it right. And then he destroyed the place.
Fatality.
Watch the video above.
For the 2021 “Mortal Kombat” movie reboot, composer Benjamin Wallfisch wrote an Edm (electronic dance music) remix of the original song titled “Techno Syndrome 2021.”

“Test your might.” These are the words of a minigame in the original Mortal Kombat arcade fighter from 1992. They were meant to signal an interlude between the simple pleasures of digitized sprites spilling buckets of blood. Yet they’ve also become synonymous with a franchise that’s arguably the most popular video game fighter of all-time. It’s kind of weird that the thing at the center of the video game never happened
No matter who you picked to win in “Mortal Kombat” you were wrong. But that’s solely because, at the end of the day, the Mortal Kombat tournament wasn’t actually part of “Mortal Kombat.” And that’s a little weird, right?
Now, to be fair, most (we missed you Johnny Cage) of the fan-favorite characters did appear and they did fight. Kano (Josh Lawson) had his laser beam eye, Jax (Mehcad Brooks) had his metal arms, Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) had his deadly freezing abilities, Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) had her iconic pink energy blasts. All the pieces were there, and there were definitely clear winners. (Rip Outworlders). They just didn’t fight each other in the traditional proceedings

Did he return to the fires of Hell or…?
(Warning: Major spoilers ahead for “Mortal Kombat.” Read on at your own risk)
There are a Lot of fighters in “Mortal Kombat,” each with their own unique ability that proves useful in saving Earth. But we need to talk about the ending for one in particular: Hanzo Hasashi, better known as Scorpion.
“Mortal Kombat” is centered on Cole Young, an Mma fighter who finds himself thrust into a supernatural fight to save the world. He bears an ancient dragon-shaped marked, signifying his role as one of Earthrealm’s champions in an ancient tournament known as Mortal Kombat.
The thing about Cole’s mark though, is that he was born with it. Every other fighter he encounters — Jax, Kano, Sonya Blade — has taken the mark from someone else by killing that person. Why is Cole different? Because his mark was passed down through his bloodline.

This Mortal Kombat article contains spoilers.
Simon McQuoid was given an interesting challenge directing the 2021 cinematic reboot of Mortal Kombat. While it does have an R-rating to help prop it up, this is hardly the first adaptation in this universe. The story has been told in movies, comics, novels, TV shows, and even the games, which were rebooted for the sake of retelling the first few chapters in a more detailed fashion. Hell, they just came out with an animated movie a year ago that explained the first game’s plot from Scorpion’s perspective.
The new movie certainly finds its own route into the mythos, and barring some bad luck, we’re probably going to get a sequel out of this. After all, it is coming out during a nice, sweet spot where people are getting vaccinated and are equally parts confident and desperate to see a movie in theaters.
