Marina Cicogna, a film producer and one of the first women to establish herself in the traditionally male cinema environment in Italy, died Saturday in Rome. She was 89.
Cicogna produced several important Italian films, including Metti, una Sera a Cena by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi and Indagine su un Cittadino al di Sopra di Ogni Sospetto (Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion) by Elio Petri, with the latter winning the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1971. The New York Times called her “one of the most powerful women in European cinema.”
Her extraordinary experience and career were recounted in 2021 in the documentary film Marina Cicogna. Life and Everything Else by Andrea Bettinetti and in her autobiography, Ancora Spero, released this year by Marsilio Publishing.
Cicogna died with Benedetta Gardona, her companion of more than 30 years, by her side.

Beverly Hills — I love talking to Oscar Isaac about the craft of acting. He's never quick with a facile soundbite and always has something intriguing to chew on regarding his choices, if you're willing to get into it. And with his subtle, smoldering work as Abel — a man trying to build a business and a life in the middle of the cold and ruthless New York City of 1981 in J.C. Chandor's "A Most Violent Year" — there is plenty to chew on indeed. I sat down with Isaac recently for a deep dive into all of this with Chandor alongside. The conversation was, I found, hugely enlightening, charting how the director and actor slowly but surely found each other's rhythm and how Isaac burrowed under the skin of his character, at times desperate to understand who he was and what his actions meant. Again, if that kind of thing is your cup of tea,...

By merging the former Visions into the Wavelengths section, Cameron Bailey has essentially made a new incontournable programme. Headed by Andréa Picard, the section which at a time was populated by medium to short run times now includes some of the bigger names in innovative feature film filmmaking who have no qualms about bending the medium. This year the sections includes long, medium and short length works from the likes of Ben Rivers, Athina Rachel Tsangari, Carlos Reygadas (pic of his controversial Post Tenebras Lux above), Wang Bing, Mati Diop (actress from Claire Denis and Antonio Campos films) and our very own writer Blake Williams who makes it two for two at Tiff with Many a Swan – he previously had Coorow-Latham Road programmed last year. Here’s the complete A to Z listing and well-worth reading descriptions.

Attending the Irish Film and Television Awards in Dublin the other week, actor Jon Voight talked with Swedish publication MovieZine and mentioned plans to re-team with his "Deliverance" and "The General" director John Boorman on a new project.
"To be honest. We just talked about another project. No one knows about this one. So let’s see if that goes. We were talking about working together again anyway, so that would be nice. He just gave me the script to me yesterday and I read it overnight. I didn’t read it all together because I wanted to get some sleep, but I couldn’t put it down. I had to read it all the way. It’s a very magical piece" said Voight.
What that piece is could be either something we've yet to hear about, or one of the two upcoming projects that Boorman's name has been linked...

British director John Boorman has begun production on his long-anticipated biopic of Roman Emperor Hadrian.
The Deliverance filmmaker has secured more than $50 million (GBP25 million) in funding for the project, which will chart the life of the man who famously built a long wall separating England and Scotland in the 2nd century A.D.
The movie will be based on Marguerite Yourcenar's novel Memoirs of Hadrian.
Boorman and his producers are currently searching for a star to play the lead role ahead of shooting, which is due to begin in Morocco next spring.
