Evan S. Connell Jr., a man renowned for his historical and literary writings, was found dead in his Santa Fe, N.M. home on Jan. 10. His neice, Donna Waller, says the cause of death was "just old age." Connell was 88.
Best known for his novels "Mrs. Bridge" (1959) and "Mr. Bridge" (1969) as well as his nonfiction like "Son of the Morning Star: Custer and the Little Bighorn" (1984), Connell's works were adapted for both the big and small screen. Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman starred in the 1990 movie "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge," while Connel's novel on George Armstrong Custer was adapted as a TV miniseries.
"Son of the Morning Star" was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle award. Connell was a finalist for the International Man Book Award for lifetime achievement. All told, he wrote 19 books during his career.
