Jack White tries to play matchmaker for Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy on the season finale of ABC's The Muppets with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life."
Backed by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, White opens Wonder's Talking Book hit with a sinister twist — making it slightly reminiscent of his own "Freedom at 21" — but sidles back into its sultry, soft rock grooves. As Kermit tells White in a clip from earlier in the episode, "You Are the Sunshine of My Life...

Ron Sunshine: Bring It Home (Rondette)
Ron Sunshine's mix of jazz, soul, and blues is always a little different from album to album. This time out the vibe is classy late-'50s/early '60s R&B with a small horn section and lots of blues shuffles. The horns and the pianist will sometimes play jazz harmonies, but in general the feeling is more down-home than his more swing-oriented efforts were -- though we're talking fine distinctions here; he's not changing styles, just shifting leanings by degrees.
Sunshine's broad tastes show in his cover of Charlie Rich's "Who Will the Next Fool Be," and his vocal is every bit as effective in his own style as Rich's or Bobby Bland's versions -- Sunshine can do covers without fearing comparisons to either the originals or to other covers; he pulls off "I'm Shakin'" (made famous by Little Willie John...

Welcome back to Rolling Stone's "Everything Index," our midweek ranking of pop culture's power players.
It's a new year, but we're still grinding the same old axe: Namely, making fun of Kim Kardashian. But this week, we're also keeping tabs on The Bachelor, marveling at Joe Biden and complaining about the Coachella lineup – actually, that's the same stuff we were doing last year, too. Guess there's no point trying to change.
So before we sign up for SoulCycle, let's get to this week's chart: the good, the bad and Everything in between.

As we previously reported, album sales are at a record all-time low in the U.S. Last week, album sales totaled 3.97 million for the week, marking the first time the tally has dropped below 4 million, unprecedented in the SoundScan era (which kicked off with tracking sales data in 1991). Billboard -- who has a partnership with SoundScan -- is the first to report album and sales news, the good, the bad and the ugly. Today it was reported that sales are slightly up from that grim news last week, 5% only (to 4.2 million), due to Ariana Grande's fresh "My Everything." But still, that makes it trending low, which Ed Christman said is only to be expected. "The weekly average number of album sales fell from 4.75 million units in the first quarter to 4.55 million units in the second quarter. In the first 8 weeks of the third quarter, the average has fallen further to 4.2 million.

Gary Oldman held nothing back in a wild interview with Playboy, where he expounded on everything from reality TV to political correctness to his defense of controversy-prone actors Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin. It's enough to put John Mayer's 2010 fiasco to shame, and coincidentally — or maybe not — both interviews included liberal uses of the n-word.

Jj Abrams got 'the band back together' for his big budget sequel. We meet the key players to talk period hair, blue drinks and 'sexy Klingons'
You know how it went: in 2009 Jj Abrams – creator of Lost, director of Mission: Impossible 3 – exhumed the rotting corpse of Star Trek, not only bringing a dying franchise back to life but making it cool. He achieved this without giving it a radical spin, without going dark and gritty, as is the way these days. He just made it really, really good, rescuing Star Trek from sweaty convention halls, making its niche universe universal.
A key factor was his non-allegiance to Star Trek. He wasn't a fan, thus went to work purely as a storyteller, without having to deal with any emotional baggage or nostalgic attachment. It paid off – the film took $385m at the box office and gave the galactic horn to fans and non-fans alike.

("Bad Girls"). Rihanna is also up for best female video, best pop video, best choreography and best visual effects (the latter two for "Where Have You Been").
Drake, meanwhile, is also up for best male video -- where he'll face off against his nightclub-brawl adversary Chris Brown -- best hip-hop video (for "Hyfr"), best art direction and best cinematography.

Plus First-Look Photos Of Evan Rachel Wood In 'A Case Of You,' & Jennifer Connelly In 'Writers'
Hope you rested your eyeballs over Memorial Day weekend, because a whole batch of new images have arrived to give you a peek at what's hitting the big and small screen in the next little while.
The first image of Kevin Spacey in the David Fincher-produced and -directed Netflix series “House Of Cards” has arrived. The still shows Spacey and Robin Wright as the ruthless and ambitious couple at the heart of the series. Spacey says that the show, based on a revered 1990 BBC drama, “is about a wily, murderous politician worming his way to the White House” and warns that "it ain't your Daddy's 'West Wing.' " The series doesn’t hit Netflix until sometime next year, but with a supporting cast that includes Kristin Connolly, Kate Mara and Corey Stoll,...

The Great Gatsby
Directed by: Baz Luhrmann
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan
Rating: Not Yet Rated
Release Date: December 25, 2012
Trailer Score: 9/10
Thoughts by Tsr: As a fan of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” I think I’m supposed to be up in arms about this. While I was worried that would be the case, I’m thrilled to say I love this trailer. As with most Luhrmann films it’s an excess of style, but what style that is! And really, it fits well with the excess that is Gatsby’s sham of a life. It remains to be seen if there will be any substance, but with seven months until release these gorgeous images are more than enough to win me over.
I generally hate live action 3D, but this looks like it might be a perfect match for the format. That’s especially true...

Jay-z! Kanye! Jack White Doing U2! The trailer for Baz Luhrmann's upcoming adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" caused a bit of an uproar as soon as it landed on the internet on Tuesday afternoon. Some thought it was a beautiful and extremely encouraging sign for what's to come, while others found it overblown and generally disappointing.
Here at HuffPost, two of our editors -- Kia Makarechi on Entertainment and Andrew Losowsky on Books -- found some time to chat about the film's casting and overall aesthetic. Read their comments on the trailer below, vote in the poll that follows and weigh in with your own thoughts in the comments. The film hits theaters on Dec. 25.
Makarechi: First off, I'm a bit ashamed to admit I had high hopes. The song -- I don't think the anachronism bothered me so much as its irrelevance. It's too obvious to use for anything other than mood.

Wes Bentley impressed in The Hunger Games as the gamemaker Seneca Crane, a character whose villainy was matched only by his absurd facial hair. Bentley looks scruffier in the upcoming indie film 3 Nights in the Desert, where he plays a musician who’s gone off his rocker. We have to ask: Is kooky facial hair written into his contracts now? The actor says, “I’ve always been able to grow facial hair since I was 15. I’ve always thought, ‘I really gotta use my facial hair for characters.’ It’s starting to work.” If you got it, flaunt it.

If you like some music to go along with your movies, today is your treat. First up, Jack White of the now defunct White Stripes, who just released his solo album, has signed on to write, produce and perform his own original score for Disney’s big blockbuster The Lone Ranger. Despite his music being featured in a number of films and many filmmakers, including Michel Gondry, crafting his music videos, this will be his first foray into scoring a feature film. Look (and listen) for Gore Verbinski‘s film, starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, in about a year when it arrives on May 31st, 2013.
We’ve also got news that electronica artist Moby will be lending his hand to Fredrik Bond‘s feature debut, The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, starring Shia Labeouf, Melissa Leo and Til Schweiger. The film revolves around a young man named Charlie Countryman...

Gary Oldman, the man who brought Sid Vicious to, er, life in 1986's Sid & Nancy, is getting back to his rock and roll roots and will be directing Jack White's live online concert, streaming as part of American Express' "Unstaged" series and featuring White's new solo material.
The Oscar-nominated Oldman (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) will be calling the shots during White's April 27 concert at Webster Hall in Manhattan and though he previously directed the critically acclaimed Nil By Mouth (1997), and has that ineffable British coolness, he really isn't a go-to name when it comes to music directors. Case in point: even he seemed surprised by White's offer, telling The New York Times, "It just fell from the sky. Occasionally you get calls and they just drop in. I didn't have to think very quickly about it. I just said, 'Yeah, that sounds very good.'"...

Memphis, Tenn. -- Tenor saxophonist Andrew Love, who formed the award-winning Memphis Horns duo with trumpeter Wayne Jackson and played unforgettable lines behind the royalty of soul, rock, pop and R&B, has died at age 70, his wife said Thursday.
Willie Love told The Associated Press on Friday that her husband died Thursday night surrounded by family and friends at his Memphis home. Love had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
Love is best known for his work with Jackson as The Memphis Horns. The two were awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in February, only the second instrumental backup group in history to receive the honor.
"He played with such feeling. He played with grace, soul," Willie Love said. "Andrew played notes from his heart."
Love, who was black, and Jackson, who is white, played together on 52 No. 1 records and 83 gold and platinum records, according to Memphis-based Stax Records. They backed up Aretha Franklin,...

Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Black Keys get bounced. Second-round voting is now under way in all Musical March Madness matchups!

After one week of MTV's Musical March Madness, about the only sure thing is that there really is no sure thing. Because with one round in the books, we're bidding adieu to three of our top-seeded bands — the Foo Fighters (bested by James Durbin), Mumford & Sons (shocked by F---ed Up) and the Black Keys (nipped by Awolnation) — upsets that prove no one is safe and assure us that, much like the actual Ncaa tournament, everyone's bracket is irrevocably broken (shout out to Mizzou and Duke ... thanks, guys!).
And though they survived, several other top-tier bands were taken down to the wire. In the West, third-seeded Blink-182 got by #14 Korn by a razor-thin margin, while #5 Linkin Park narrowly avoided an upset at...

It's back! MTV's third annual Musical March Madness tips off today (March 12), pitting the 64 bands that matter most against each other in a bracket-battle to the death (Ok, no one actually dies, but we're rolling here). And like in previous years, your votes determine who advances on — and who will ultimately hoist the big gold trophy when the tournament ends April 3.
Can Green Day repeat as Mmm champs? Will perennial powerhouses My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars and Paramore finally make it to the top of the mountain? Or will 2012 bring us another unheralded winner, a la Coheed and Cambria in 2010? All of these questions — and more — will be answered in the coming weeks, as the drama and majesty that is Musical March Madness plays out before our very eyes.

This Saturday is every vinyl addict's favorite holiday: Record Store Day. On April 16th, music fans across the country will perform a simple act that in the digital age is becoming increasingly rare: Go to their local record store and buy music. What once started as a small annual celebration of independent record stores, Record Store Day has blossomed into a full-fledged musical celebration of the local music shop. Bands of all sizes and statures are offering limited edition albums, playing intimate shows, and giving fans future relics all in a show of solidarity with record stores.
Need some inspiration to dole out some cash? Buzzfeed has put together a depressing collection of old record store photos. See them and weep here. Now, ready to do your part? Head to Record Store Day's official website to find participating stores and on April 16th start shopping.

The Tourist
Directed by: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Cast: Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Steven Berkoff, Timothy Dalton
Running Time: 1 hr 43 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: December 10, 2010
Plot: An American man (Depp) is mistakenly brought into an international manhunt when he becomes associated with a woman (Jolie) searching for her elusive fugitive husband.
Who’S It For? The pacing of the film calls for more mature viewers, or at least those who have fond recollections of classic picturesque thrillers kind of like To Catch A Thief. Without the romance.
Expectations: Despite the two big cast members that were finally coming together on screen, I was mostly at The Tourist for von Donnersmarck. In 2006, he beat out films like Pan’s Labyrinth with The Lives of Others, his debut movie about surveillance during the cold war. Now with the director handling a story that looks like it might echo the...

Jonah Hill in Get Him to the Greek
Photo: Universal Pictures The first time I noticed Jonah Hill was his role as the foul-mouthed friend in Superbad even though he'd had roles in such films as Evan Almighty, Click and I Heart Huckabees before that, and, of course, his small roles in Judd Apatow's The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. However, Superbad was three years ago and now Hill's built a solid resume of comedic roles and this summer even moves into more dramatic territory with Fox Searchlight's Cyrus and will follow that up with the straightforward drama Moneyball in 2011 for Capote director Bennett Miller and opposite Brad Pitt. This is all on top of a script he's co-writing for an adaptation of "21 Jump Street", which he will also star in. To say this 26-year-old has come a long way would be an understatement.
