A common theme in U.S. network coverage of King Charles’ coronation was, why are Americans so fasciated by this?
Starting around 5 a.m. Et, the better question might as well have been, why are they up watching this?
As the king started their procession down the streets of London, commentator after commentator weighed in. On MSNBC, historian Jon Meacham quoted Shakespeare’s Henry V and said of the pageantry unfolding, “It is this marvelous cocktail, if you will, of the human, the divine, the democratic, the monarchial, the English and to some extent American.”
Others mentioned the colonial history of the U.S. and the special relationship between the two countries.
Perhaps the most succinct explanation came from Fox News’ Benjamin Hall, recently returned after recovering from severe injuries while covering the war in Ukraine, who said, “You’ve got pomp and circumstance, you’ve got a bit of...

Lemurs are so cool.
Here’s a fun look into what life was like before mass adoption of the Internet. When I was around 10 or 11 years old, my family had a desktop computer with internet access but the internet wasn’t all that fun or reliable yet. And it certainly wasn’t mobile. New TV week ends for me tonight, at least until all the mid-season replacement shows start to replace the shows that somehow failed to attract an audience after all of three episodes, which is a little sad. It's all downhill from here, you know? Most of these shows will never get better than the anticipation you had leading up to their return, or their premiere. It's a sad realization, and the high of this week and all the shiny new shows you get to watch will soon fade to jaded and bitter disappointment as they fail to live up to your expectations and you'll either keep watching and be that person who keeps defending their crappy show to their friends ("Ok, yeah, the dialogue does suck but the story line is interesting! Sometimes!") or stop watching. Me? I tend to find a middle ground where I keep watching but don't bother defending the shows.

We've got the first of the fall shows either coming back or premiering tonight (mostly on The CW which seems to try and get its properties out of the gate early to draw in viewers before they have to compete with the big boys) but I suspect there are many of you out there far more interested in the fact that the first actual NFL game of the season is on tonight. I don't know about the rest of you, but I've already got my guacamole makings, salsa con queso, and hint of lime chips ready to go and I'm not even a particular fan of either of the teams playing tonight. It's just a nice reminder that we're getting back into the fall TV season so everyone can stop complaining about how there's nothing on TV and start complaining about how everything on TV sucks. I know you've all...

... And the short answer to the question posed in the headline is: No. And that's pretty sad. On the new 'Extreme Cuisine' (Thu., 8Pm Et on Food Network), host Jeff Corwin travels to the United Kingdom to sample some of the local dishes. The food enjoyed by the natives there includes jellied eels, stuffed sheep's stomach and saltwater snails. Gee, maybe this is the reason that some people aren't that "into" British food.
The saltwater snails that Jeff hunts for are called "limpets," and they aren't that hard to track down. Mainly because they live on rocks, and almost never move -- sometimes a limpet will stay on a single rock for its entire life. Removing the creature from its rock proves to be more problematic, though.

I was thinking about doing a Pajiba After Dark about 80's TV but the only TV I watched during the 80's starred Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, because I was born in 1986. I don't actually have any memory of the 80's, most of what I "know" about the 80's comes from the entertainment of the era, ironically, so it's all kind of a jumble of shoulder pads, perms, neon, and cocaine as far as I'm concerned. And the more I learn about it, the more I'm glad that I wasn't old enough to form permanent memories before then. Of course, the 90's gave us low rise bell bottoms again, belly button piercings, boy band hair, and dark lipstick in the daytime so it's not like I've got bragging room. So if you'd like to talk about the television of the 80's, my 80's week gift to you is that I won't call you old.

The word "extreme" seems to get thrown around a lot these days. We have extreme sodas, extreme sporting events, and so on and so forth. And we're a little skeptical about some of these things, to be honest. So we'll just actually have to tune in to the show 'Extreme Cuisine With Jeff Corwin' (Thu., 8Pm Et on Food Network) -- in order to learn if it's really Extreme To The Max.
On the latest episode of the show, host (and "food anthropologist") Jeff Corwin travels to New Zealand, where he hunts down an obscure species of eel. Supposedly, these eels are good eating, but in order to reach them, you have to rappel down into a cave. Also, the cave is pitch black, and is filled with waist-deep, freezing cold water.

I'm having a really hard time coming up with a topic for today, I've started and stopped like three different ideas that either were dumb or I just lost interest in even as I was writing them. It's not too much of a loss as all of them were a lead in for the following announcement: I will be taking next week off of Pajiba After Dark. My classes start next week and as some incredibly astute readers who know me on Facebook may have noticed, I am not back in North Cuba yet, so there a whole lot of packing, driving, unpacking, and organizing in my immediate future. And let me tell you, if there is ever a time of year that is best suited for moving from Maryland to Miami it is... really not late August at all. The weather in both locales is some version of meteorological...

It's Earth Day today, which I'm sure some people celebrate for real but all I really associate it with is dippy art projects from elementary school that involve "recycling" things like newspapers, magazines, and tissues boxes or toilet roll tubes by turning them into hideous version of "art" that usually involve gluing pieces of magazine or newspaper onto the tissue box or toilet roll tube and calling it a "recipe card box" or a "scrunchie holder" (I was a child of the '90s, shut up). It also happens to be my Mom's birthday, so I was almost always more concerned about how I was going to celebrate my mother than how I was going to celebrate earth. So, internet, please wish my mother a very happy birthday and maybe get more diligent about actually recycling. Saving tissue boxes you might find a way to reuse doesn't count, it just...

TV eats are king for smallscreen viewers. Food Network is aided by the bad economic times that spur people to gather around the television and learn new techniques for cooking at home and traveling vicariously through epicurious adventures. The year 2009 was the best year ever for Food Network with record ratings, impressions and hit shows. Viewers are eating up foodie personalities such as Guy Fieri, Paula Deen, and Jeff Corwin in record numbers. The network announced today that it posted their highest-rated primetime numbers in history with a .5 among adults 25-54 and a 19 percent gain over year-ago levels. Food Network significantly grew its upscale audience as well with .5 among persons 25-54 in $100k plus households,...

Jeff Corwin is the latest star on Food Network. Corwin is an expert in wildlife and conservation, and now he sets his sights on exploring human culture through regional cuisine in his first Food Network endeavor: Extreme Cuisine with Jeff Corwin. With an open mind and mouth, our intrepid foodie and anthropologist tears through countries like Thailand, Mexico, Greece, and Peru on radical culinary adventures. Learning from the natives, he samples the exotic foods and local customs that mold each community. Corwin hails from my home state of Massachusetts, and he has an interesting family life; Jeff lives on a twenty acre island off of the Bay State and grows, harvests, and catches 20% of his...

Animal Planet and Clorox have teamed for a new project, dubbed "The Vanishing Frog", that is intended to focus attention on a deadly fungus that is destroying frogs and other amphibian populations around the world.
At the center of the multimedia project is a Discovery Studios-produced documentary that will feature Animal Planet's Jeff Corwin on a global mission to uncover clues about the frog's deadly plight while also unifying viewers with a common cause of environmental protection of wildlife resources. It's set to premiere in the fall.

Animal Planet has struck a deal with CNN to air the second window of the cable news network's Planet in Peril, a series co-hosted by Animal Planet personality Jeff Corwin. The two-part, four-hour series, centering on threats to the world's environment, will air on Animal Planet from 8-10 p.m. Dec. 2 and 3, about a month after its premiere on CNN.
The series, co-hosted by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, will focus on four main environmental issues: climate change, deforestation, species loss and overpopulation. It was shot in high-definition across four continents and 13 countries.
"Collaborating with CNN and sharing the talent of Jeff Corwin is a win-win for both networks that are so passionate about communicating the critical environmental and conservation message," said Marjorie Kaplan, president and GM of Animal Planet and Discovery Kids Media.
Animal Planet is owned by Discovery Communications; CNN is a division of Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting System Inc.

An upcoming CNN documentary on environmental dangers will get an unprecedented second window on Discovery Networks, the 24-hour news channel disclosed Sunday at its Television Critics Assn. session at the Beverly Hilton.
"Planet in Peril", a four-hour documentary premiering Oct. 23 on CNN, will be repurposed four weeks after its original airdate for a limited run on Discovery. CNN has collaborated in the past with other cable channels within the Time Warner family, but sharing outside the company is a rarity.
Securing clearance for the participation of a Discovery personality, Jeff Corwin, for an on-air role in the docu led to further discussions between the companies, which in turn led to the arrangement, according to sources. Corwin hosts "Corwin's Quest" on Discovery-owned Animal Planet.
"Peril" likely will air on Discovery's flagship network Discovery Channel, which has been beefing up its news programming in recent years, including a series of specials featuring Ted Koppel.
"Peril" was one of two multihour documentaries CNN introduced Sunday, the other being the six-hour exploration of religious fundamentalism, "God's Warriors". The network is boosting its emphasis on documentaries, increasing its fill of the genre by 30% compared with last year.

NEW YORK -- Animal Planet is trying to lure hipster audiences with new hosts and programming while retaining its traditional and kids audiences. That's the plan outlined Monday by Maureen Smith, who was named exec vp and general manager of the Discovery-owned channel in the summer. New primetime programming includes a two-hour Sunday block hosted by Mo Rocca, "Whoa! Sunday". "Wild Wednesdays" block will feature Buggin' With Ruud and a new show by Jeff Corwin. Also on tap are shows about dogs and their owners who do yoga together, a young couple who travel and take nature photographs and a special three years in the making titled Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real.
