A long time ago, a grade-schooler got his hands on a spaceship. He followed the assembly instructions as best he could, snapping on the cannons, the landing gear, the tiny interstellar-chess table. Soon enough, Rian Johnson was holding his very own Millennium Falcon. "The first thing I did," he recalls, "was throw it across the room, to see how it would look flying." He grins. "And it broke."

The 2016 presidential election is finally coming to an end, but The Orchard is just getting started on “11/8/16,” the follow-up to Jeff Deutchman’s 2008 documentary about the election of President Obama, “11/4/08.” Produced by Deutchman and directed by more than 40 filmmakers who will capture footage from all over the country on Tuesday, November 8, the film represents the most ambitious Election Day documentary ever produced.

Johnny Rotten grabs the microphone and lurches forward, his pimply face grinning into the camera. Next to him, Steve Jones is miming (or mocking) guitar-hero moves, while Sid Vicious hunches over his bass, surly as ever. The grainy footage carbon-dates to the tail end of 1977, right before the band was about to embark on their notorious U.S. tour and then implode. It's Christmas Day in the Northern city of Huddersfield, and will turn out to be the penultimate U.K. performance for the seminal punk band. They launch into...

If you had to distill the 1960s British Invasion to its key and core seminal rock and roll bands—the ones that really lasted, the ones that endured and joined the all-time-great pantheon—you pretty much land on The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who (there’s lots of sub-bands that get footnote mentions like The Animals, Herman’s Hermits and The Zombies the latter of which are super excellent, but that’s another story). But one rock band left outside that triumvirate who are arguably just as good, and perhaps even have a more consistent body of work for their formative years is The Kinks. Formed by brothers Ray and Dave Davies, brilliant pop song writers notorious for their acrimonious relationship while rhythm section Mick Avory and Pete Quaife looked on in dismay, The Kinks have several seminal pop records to their name, The Kinks Are the Village...

The Jonas Brothers may be the latest sibling act to implode, but they certainly aren't the first. Throughout rock's history, brother acts have been feuding and fighting, while they make beautiful music together. Of course, not all brothers are bound to end up estranged, destined to sit at opposite ends of the table come holidays staring at each other in stony silence. For every Ray & Dave Davies of the Kinks, there's a loving counterpart, like the three Hanson brothers, Isaac, Taylor and Zac, who are going on 20 years without a public spat. Here's a look at some brother acts,...

They went from being new romantics in Spandau Ballet to playing London gangsters in the film The Krays. Now the brothers are about to appear on TV together again
An enduring tale of sibling harmony, Gary and Martin Kemp have spent decades working companionably alongside one another without ever, publicly at least, succumbing to fraternal combustion. The arts, and particularly pop music, is littered with brothers (more so, curiously, than sisters) who have tried to do the same and failed, among them Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks and Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis, each undone by ego and the need to dominate. But the Kemps are different, an anomaly. Now both in their 50s, they remain essentially one and the same, and consequently stronger together than the sum of their parts.
But how? Gary Kemp, who, at 53, is two years Martin's senior, thinks that it is down to their upbringing.

So far on Season 3 of "The Walking Dead," the prison and Woodbury have remained separate but creatively equal storylines. Tonight is the beginning of those worlds colliding, and raises anticipation even more for the final two episodes of the season's first half. (Yes, it's true, we've only got two "Dead"s left in 2012.)
Maggie and Glenn are now in Woodbury (but they're probably only seeing it the way Lieutenant Welles of the National Guard saw it, and not the way Andrea or even Michonne experienced it), and Michonne is about to enter the prison (assuming Rick lets her in). In a way, all three of them are where they are because of Merle.
"Hounded" opens with Merle and three members of The Governor's "research team" hunting Michonne. Apparently, The Governor isn't too happy about Michonne leaving Woodbury and has no plans to peacefully let her go her own way. When...

Frank Bruno has reportedly been admitted to a health care facility after seeking professional help. The former world heavyweight boxing champion's friends became concerned after he began acting paranoid and "strange", before calling mental health experts. "He was acting really strange," a source told The Sun. "He had become convinced that anyone he talked to was trying to take his money. It's really sad because everyone loves Frank and we are all hoping he gets better soon." The boxer was sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983 in 2003, before later being diagnosed as bipolar. Police and doctors arrived at Bruno's home in Bedfordshire on Wednesday (April 11), but he was not in at the time. However, the following day he willingly admitted himself to a health facility. Boxing icon Frank Bruno has sought professional help after he "started showing" signs his bipolar disorder has returned, according to his agent.
Britain's Sun on Sunday reports the legendary fighter's friends became concerned about his wellbeing and called in mental health experts.
A source told the publication, "He was acting really strange. He had become convinced that anyone he talked to was trying to take his money. It's really sad because everyone loves Frank and we are all hoping he gets better soon."
Police and medics were reportedly called to Bruno's home in Bedfordshire, England on Wednesday but the star was not at the property and the following day, he left willingly and is now receiving care in an undisclosed health unit.
Bruno's agent Dave Davies says, "Frank hasn't been sectioned. He started showing tendencies of bipolar. From what I understand he went of his own accord into a clinic.
"He needs a couple of weeks' good rest. He is absolutely shattered. With his condition, Frank needs to take more care of himself.
"When he comes out of his house every morning he is on show. He doesn't criticise that or moan because it is the public that have put him where he is. But as an outsider watching Frank non-stop I feel he needs a good rest.
"Sometimes we all need a few days off to recharge our batteries. That's what Frank is doing."
In 2003, Bruno was sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983 and underwent psychological and psychiatric tests, and was later diagnosed as bipolar.

James Watkins got his name out in the open with February’s well-received The Woman in Black, and he’s using any newly-established sway to move forward with Second Is Nowhere. Written by William Davies (How to Drain Your Dragon), the film’s a true-life drama focusing on Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe, two Olympic mid-distance runners who formed a rivalry throughout the ’70s and ’80s. [ScreenDaily, via ThePlaylist]
The forthcoming London Olympics almost gives the impression of a tie-in to some global event, but producer (and BBC Films head) Christine Langan feels as though Second stands as “a really good British story that is very exciting and compelling” — and, in fact, says it might be wise to come after an event that inundates daily life to begin with. As someone who can barely tolerate talk of the Olympics when they air, it’d be fair to say I agree. So, with not...

The Kinks are finally set to become the "Celluloid Heroes" they once sang about.
The story of the British rockers and self-described "Muswell Hillbillies" will be put to the silver screen in the musical biography film, "You Really Got Me," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"You Really Got Me," named after arguably the band's most popular single (besides perhaps "Lola"), will concentrate on the rock group founded by brothers Ray and Dave Davies that recorded such '60s pop ditties as "All Day and All of the Night" and "A Well Respected Man" before moving on to harder-edged '70s tracks such as "Low Budget" and "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" and finally becoming MTV darlings with Top 40 '80s hits like "Come Dancing" and "Don't Forget to Dance."

The success of well-received ghost tale "The Woman In Black" has benefited pretty much everyone: Star Daniel Radcliffe has proven he can be a viable lead outside of the "Harry Potter" franchise, revived horror label Hammer Films has taken its place again at the top of the British genre tree (the picture has taken £20 million at the U.K. box office, making it the most successful home-grown horror picture ever), and director James Watkins has undoubtedly landed himself on the top of many wishlists.
Watkins, who made his debut with the Michael Fassbender-starring hoodie horror picture "Eden Lake," has sci-fi actioner "Methuselah" in the works from 'Potter' producer David Heyman, but it looks like that won't be his next picture: Screen Daily reports that he's changing lanes, excuse the pun, to direct the based-in-fact sports drama "Second Is Nowhere" for BBC Films and Al Films.

John Carpenter is considered one of the most iconic horror directors, having created such classic chillers as Halloween, The Thing and The Fog. Carpenter has also given us some damn good action movies too, introducing us to Snake Plissken in Escape From New York and even blessing video game icon Duke Nukem with one of his most famous lines (“I’m here to chew bubblegum and kick ass…. And i’m all outta gum”) which was nabbed from alien invasion movie They Live.
Sadly, Carpenter’s work has become somewhat overshadowed by a later career of disappointing films – many of which have failed to excite both critics and audiences.

Captain Kirk is headed back to space.
William Shatner, the Emmy winning TV icon, announced the track listing and details for his new space-inspired cover album, Searching For Major Tom. The album will feature a large number of heavy metal covers, as well as songs by U2, Frank Sinatra, Queen and Pink Floyd.
Shatner has had a storied music career, producing confusing, parodied yet somehow enlightening song covers and original bits over the past 40+ years. His first album, The Transformed Man, raised eyebrows with its bizarre covers, which, in what would become his trademark style, boasted dramatic readings of lyrics over music. HIs best known track was a recording of Sonny & Cher's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Check out Urlesque's ranking of his ten best cover songs here.

The Jesters, the comedy group in the Movie Extra series, is more successful than ever. Will the real show match its fictional counterpart?
Movie Extra’s series about the making of a comedy show The Jesters was positively received when it first aired in 2009, so it was only natural they’d be back with more biting satire. Dave Davies has fueled his public feud with former bandmate and estranged brother Ray Davies - insisting he will never reunite with the rocker to reform The Kinks. Dave, who has a famously volatile relationship with Ray, has not worked with his brother since the band split in 1996.
He declined Ray's invitation to reunite for a tribute concert to late bandmate Pete Quaife in June this year, after the drummer died from kidney failure. Earlier this month, Ray sparked rumors a reunion was imminent, telling Sky News his brother was "coming round" to the idea of putting the band back together.
However, Dave has slammed the idea - insisting a reunion is out of the question because it would taint the band's legacy. He tells Britain's Daily Mail, "It would be a shame. You don't need to see silly old men in wheelchairs singing 'You Really Got Me'."...

Each of the songs on Taylor Swift's upcoming album Speak Now (which will be in stores next Monday, October 25) follows a concept, as the individual tracks are all about a single person or encounter in Swift's life. The latest track to sneak out into the Internet ether is "Mean," a scathing country track that sees Swift fighting back at her critics.
On the track, she puts a critic in his or her place with cutting words. "Drunken rumbling on about how I can't sing / But all you are is mean/ And a liar/ And pathetic/ And alone in life/ And mean," she sings, likely referencing the negative attention she received after her problematic performance at the 2010 Grammy Awards. The rest of the lyrics are just as biting, and though the song itself is a pleasant country shuffle (complete with banjos), the content of the lyrics represents the most bile Swift has ever dished out.

This would be Fillions third time working with Lussier they previously collaborated on Dracula 2000 and White Noise 2. Condition Dead was written by ex-chud/now Joblo writer Dave Davis, and is produced by Clint Morris (from Moviehole) and Joel Soission (Pulse). Tyrese Gibson, initially onboard as a producer, is no longer involved. The script fixes on an elite team of government-subsidized zombie-hunters who are mysteriously ambushed by a viscous new breed of zombie.

While everyone was quite bummed when Nathan Fillion didn't take the stage as Ant-Man at the Marvel panel this past Saturday at Comic Con, it's hard to feel too sorry for him. After all, Super looked fantastic, he was surrounded by a legion of browncoats (that's Firefly fans for those not in the know), and, in many ways, he just awesome. Because of his popularity, he never seems to be out of work for too long and now it looks like he's close to another gig. Movie Hole caught up with Drive Angry 3D director Patrick Lussier this weekend at Comic Con and discussed Lussier's next project, a film titled Condition Dead, based on a script by movie blogger Dave Davis of JoBlo. Falling in the horror/action genre, the film follows a special government organization tasked to control the dead rising from the grave, and Fillion is being heavily...

Former The Kinks bassist Pete Quaife has died, aged 66. The musician, who founded the group with school pals Ray and Dave Davies and drummer Mick Avory in 1962, passed away on Thursday, June 24.
His cause of death is not yet known, although Quaife had been undergoing kidney dialysis since 1998 after suffering renal failure. The bassist featured on The Kinks' early records, including the 1964 hit "You Really Got Me", before briefly quitting in 1966 after a car accident left him unable to perform. He rejoined the band but was permanently replaced by John Dalton in 1969.
Quaife last played with The Kinks in 1990 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Frontman Ray Davies reportedly asked Quaife to rejoin the band to record new music in 2008 but he declined the offer, releasing a statement saying he was stepping out of the spotlight for good.

Russell Brand says threesomes are a bad idea, because you could touch another man's testicles. The British comic star, renowned for his womanizing ways, insists you should only have sex with a girl and another man if you are attracted to guys as well as women, otherwise stick to one-on-one bedroom fun.
"I would urge people, men especially, unless they're bisexual, to avoid the two-male threesome. You're essentially getting less there than you would have got anyway," he told Rolling Stone magazine. "Half the involvement in sex and at least doubled the risk of someone farting in the room. And the constant threat of what I know as 'nut brush'."
Explaining what the "nut brush" is, Russell said, "The 'nut brush' is the phenomena where if you take a threesome to its natural conclusion you may very well find your testicles being impeached by another man's testicles. That's not my idea of a party!

A new wave of biopics and rockumentaries – including films about Blur, the White Stripes and Muse – leads the attack on "the blandest of the bland"
A backlash has begun against the stranglehold that television talent shows have on the British music industry. Films about rock history are the first line of attack, according to the leading directors and musicians who are driving a growing public interest in the bands that have shaped popular music.
Ten films chronicling the lives of pop stars and rock musicians have been released or gone into production in recent months. John Lennon, Ian Dury and the record producer Joe Meek have already been the subjects of biopics, and screenwriters are now delving into Britain's rich rock past to tell the stories of other musicians.
This week sees the release of Oil City Confidential, an account of Canvey Island pub-rockers Dr Feelgood. The film's director, Julien Temple,...

Music documentary-maker Julien Temple is to turn his attention to the sibling spats of Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks in a new film
Julien Temple, the director of Sex Pistols documentaries The Great Rock'n' Roll Swindle and The Filth and the Fury, is planning to shoot a feature film about Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks. To be titled You Really Got Me, the movie will focus on the "extraordinary love-hate relationship" between the brothers, which often resulted in legendary on-stage and off-stage spats. It will also examine the development of the band's sound, from the tough r'n'b of their mid 60s period, to their later fascination with music-hall and rock opera.
Speaking to ScreenDaily, Temple said: "Love/hate, sibling rivalry is at the core. I think it's a very rich social, cultural nexus around the Kinks. Their story is the untold story of all those big bands of the 1960s.

Our own silky smooth Dave Davis was right back in October when he speculated that the new Jack Ryan film wouldn't be based on any of the Tom Clancy novels, but rather be an original story. Earlier yesterday, while doing press for Invictus, producer Mace Neufield confirmed just that and went into details on what to expect from the re-rebooted franchise. From ComingSoon.net: "We pick him up when he's on Wall Street," says Neufeld. "The Jack Ryan movies have never been...

The Kinks will soon have us! The English rock band (aka the dudes behind the song "You Really Got Me") are getting a feature biopic. ScreenDaily reports that British director Julien Temple is collaborating with frontman Ray Davies on a film that will focus on the relationship between Ray and fellow bandmate and brother Dave Davies. The two were the only steady members of the band, and as Temple explains: "At the heart of [the feature] is the extraordinary love-hate relationship between these two brothers: love/hate, sibling rivalry is at the core."
Right now Temple and Davies are sussing out the approach before any screenplay is started. Of course, that also means that there is no cast yet, but Temple will require the actors to be able to play The Kinks music: "I think you would want to have the music played by the actors ... that is believable and real while miming is problematic.

Freddy wants more face time, and we're certainly seeing it. Last week the realistic visage of Krueger threw many for a loop. The majority opinion was that it looked like a cheap mask. My personal favorites are, a' 95 year olds nut sack' and 'Fire Marshall Bill' as Dave Davis so lovingly joked. I'm still trying to form an opinion on the Samuel Bayer re-imagining. Bayer has directed some amazing music videos: Blind Melon "No Rain", The Cranberries "Zombie", Smashing...
