Life In A Day (12A)
(Kevin Macdonald, 2011, Us)
Compiled from amateur submissions of what people all over the world did on 24 July 2010, this documentary sets itself an almighty challenge. It's fashioned into some sort of narrative order, with recurring themes and music, and moments of emotion and illumination, which saves it from becoming a random global channel-surf. But you could say the subjective "direction" and homogenising technical treatment are at odds with the democratic intentions.
The Beaver (12A)
(Jodie Foster, 2011, Us) Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin. 91 mins
Having crucified Jesus, Gibson now nails himself to the cross in a bizarre talk-to-the-hand family drama that feels more like the actor's own public therapy session.

First stop, Morgan Freeman. Meeting the actor was a blessing! He is a great actor and an equally great human being. His fantastic narration anchors .Born to Be Wild 3D. and his storytelling voice pulls us right into the narrative.
In this interview, Mr. Freeman calls me the happiest person on earth
We also talked about:
His interest in working in .Born to Be Wild 3D.
The narrative constructs of the film, and was he instructed in finding the right storytelling rhythm?

While growing up in the late Sixties to early Seventies, one of the favorite television shows in our house was Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with host Marlin Perkins. We loved watching wild animals in their natural habitat along with the challenges faced by Perkins and his field correspondents Jim Fowler and Peter Gros. Similar in nature was the classic film Born Free (1966), which told the story of female lion cub Elsa raised to maturity by a Kenyan game warden. Elsa is re-educated so that she can be released back into the wild. Both Wild Kingdom and Born Free left out the violence experienced in the wild, a pattern followed by IMAX documentary Born to Be Wild.

While spending 40 minutes listening to the smooth tones of Oscar winner Morgan Freeman is enough to endear an audience member, adding über-adorable primates and pachyderms makes “Born to Be Wild 3D” an outing for which it’s worth babysitting your sister’s kids.
Focused on two incredibly courageous and compassionate women, Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas and Dr. Dame Daphne M. Sheldrick, “Born to Be Wild” points its IMAX lenses at the rescue of orphaned elephants and orangutans in Kenya and Borneo respectively. Life, death, poaching and deforestation are handled deftly and sensitively for the “G” rating on the film and should ensure that school groups everywhere are given a green light to board excursion buses accompanied by thematically appropriate popcorn substitutes (we suggest banana chips and peanuts).

In Born To Be Wild 3D, director David Lickley brings his audience not one, but two unforgettable stories about the depths of human compassion and animal resilience. The film follows the startlingly similar stories of Dr. Birute Mary Galidakas (who runs the Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine in Borneo) and Dr. Dame Daphne M. Sheldrick (who runs a similar organization in Kenya, but in service to elephants). Both women have dedicated their lives to healing and helping orphaned animals, and both have pioneered new methods of doing so with the aim of returning those orphans to the wild.

Born to Be Wild 3D is standard scientific IMAX fare that trades on an indisputable fact: Ecologically friendly movies about cute animals are just about impossible to resist. That’s even more pronouncedly the case when they unfold across settings as exotically picturesque as the wilds of Kenya and Borneo, with sweeping helicopter shots of the savanna and jungles molded to close-ups of the sweet, sad faces of orphaned orangutans and elephants. Throw in the honey tones of Morgan Freeman’s soothing narrative diction and keep things to an astoundingly brisk 40 minutes and you’ve got a recipe for success, albeit of the sort that’s best seen as a companion to a larger trip (a zoo or science center visit, for example) than a destination in itself. Director David Lickley depicts the work and passions of Dr. Biruté Galdikis and Dame Daphne Sheldrick, the former a Bornean scientist and an advocate for orangutans, the...

That’s all one needs to know about the 40 minute “Born to Be Wild” documentary. Yep, just 40 minutes of elephants and orangutans running around, all while Morgan Freeman narrates. The only reason this is being released in theaters instead of hitting the Discovery channel, is due to the camera choice that director David Lickley went with here. 4K Digital IMAX is his weapon of choice and apparently this is the first time anyone has ever used this equipment in a feature film.
