Netflix and the U.K.’s National Youth Theatre have launch an awareness program after a survey revealed alarming concerns about nepotism in the creative industries.
A National Youth Theatre survey of 3,000 young people across the U.K. found that the “nepo-baby” effect extended beyond on screen talent to behind the scenes roles too. Some 79% of young people believed they need connections rather than talent and determination to make it and a further two-thirds (68%) thought they needed to live in a big city to have a career in TV or film.
To alleviate these concerns, Ignite Your Creativity, a free program from Netflix and the National Youth Theatre, aims to help young people build networks and raise awareness about the wide range of behind the scenes careers in film, TV and theatre. The program will support 500 young people aged 14-25 years in South Wales, West Yorkshire and the Northeast of the country.

The “Nepo baby” effect has been laid bare in the UK by Netflix/National Youth Theatre research that showed the vast majority of respondents believe connections rather than talent are required to make it big.
Unveiled alongside the research, the streamer and theater have launched the Ignite Your Creativity program to “crack the class ceiling,” which will support 500 young people in South Wales, West Yorkshire and the North East to build industry connections and knowledge of behind the scenes careers in film, TV and theater.
Four out of five (79%) of the 3,000 young people surveyed believe they need connections rather than talent and determination to make it, and that the issue isn’t limited to on-screen success but covers a wealth of positions behind the camera. One respondent to the survey said “nepo babies” emerge at all levels, adding: “Most people don’t seem to realize that this kind of nepotism isn’t just for celebrities.

TNT is looking to a British drama series – The Lazarus Project – to plug its scripted gap as Kathleen Finch maintains that the cable network remains in the scripted business.
Finch, Chairman and Chief Content Officer, US Networks Group for Warner Bros. Discovery, said that the acquisition of the Sky series “gave us a runway to reset TNT’s scripted and unscripted development filters and quickly deliver fresh content for fans of big, scripted drama”.
The Lazarus Project, which launched in the UK in August, comes from Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton and stars I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu.
It marks the first new scripted drama to appear on TNT since the April 2022 merger that created Warner Bros. Discovery and comes after the T-Nets killed series such as Kill The Orange-Faced Bear and ended Snowpiercer and Chad.

Eerie, desolate sci-fi series War of the Worlds aired in France in late 2019 and earlier this year in the Us and UK. Less an adaptation of the titular H.G. Wells novel than a contemporary riff on the alien invasion thriller by creator Howard Overman, it resolutely ploughed its own furrow. Moody, atmospheric, bleak and emotional, it swapped red weed, tripods and heat rays for a grief-soaked meditation on family and survival… with terrifying alien robot sniper dogs.
The series’ second run commission has been an open secret for months, but the official stamp was announced this weekend, with filming due to begin on Monday the 13th of July after a dry run of the new Covid-19 filming protocol took place last Friday.
Deadline, speaking to Urban Myth producer Johnny Capps reported on the meticulous planning and procedures in place to film the second series in the midst of a global coronavirus pandemic.

Yet another television adaptation of H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds is in the works, this time from Fox Networks Group.
War of the Worlds, the template-setting 1898 alien invasion sci-fi novel by H.G. Wells, has certainly seen its share of adaptations over its century-plus existence; a multi-medium collection that will soon add a promising miniseries by the BBC. However, Urban Myth Films is prepping its own television take on the classic story of extraterrestrial conflagration. Moreover, the series has procured a pair of prestigious stars for its effort.
Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern will headline a War of the Worlds television series. This adaptation – arriving as eight 60-minute episodes – puts Wells’s story through the lens of modernization, manifesting as a contemporary-set reimagining of the tale; a stark distinction from the BBC miniseries, which adapts a more traditional setting for the story in the brief 1901-1910 era of Edwardian England.

Netflix has ordered a TV adaptation of John Marrs’ sci-fi novel “The One,” from “Misfits” creator Howard Overman.
Here’s the official logline for the 10-episode series: “The One” is set five minutes in the future, in a world where a DNA test can find your perfect partner – the one person you’re genetically predisposed to fall passionately in love with. No matter how good your relationship, which one of us can honestly say we haven’t thought about whether there is someone better out there? What if a hair sample is all it takes to find them? The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive. We will never think of love and relationships in the same way again.
Overman is creator, writer and executive producer on “The One,” with Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy also executive producing for Urban Myth Films. The series hails from Urban Myth Films and StudioCanal.

Netflix has greenlit “The One,” a sci-fi series set in a very near future in which a DNA test can match people with their perfect partner. Based on the eponymous John Marrs novel, the 10-part series will be produced by U.K.-based drama shingle Urban Myth Films and launch globally on Netflix.

Netflix has met its match, so to speak. The streaming service has greenlighted The One, a 10-episode drama series from writer-creator Howard Overman based on the sci-fi novel by John Marrs.
Here’s the logline: The One is set five minutes in the future, in a world where a DNA test can find your perfect partner – the one person you’re genetically predisposed to fall passionately in love with. No matter how good your relationship, which one of us can honestly say we haven’t thought about whether there is someone better out there? What if a hair sample is all it takes to find them? The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive.
StudioCanal is the studio, and the series is produced by Urban Myth Films, the company set up by Overman and producers Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy;. The latter two are exec producers of The One.

Martin Freeman is set to take on a new detective role, starring in true-story drama “A Confession” for ITV Studios. The Emmy- and BAFTA-winning “Sherlock” star will be joined by Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning actress Imelda Staunton in the six-part drama, it was announced Monday by ITV’s head of drama, Polly Hill.
Freeman will star as real-life Det. Supt. Steve Fulcher, whose decision to deliberately breach police protocol in order to catch a killer cost him his career and reputation. “A Confession” is expected to air on ITV in 2019. The news comes hot on the heels of the actor’s casting in parental comedy “Breeders” for FX, which will debut in 2020.
Created by BAFTA-winner Jeff Pope, “A Confession” follows the real-life investigation into the disappearance of a 22-year-old woman who failed to return home after a night out with girlfriends at a local nightclub in Swindon, in England, in March 2011.

Martin Freeman is a busy man; a day after revealing he is making a parenting comedy for FX and Sky, the Sherlock star is making a six-part drama for UK’s ITV.
Studiocanal’s Urban Myth Films will produce A Confession, along with ITV Studios, with Imelda Staunton also starring.
Written by Jeff Pope, the series tells the story of how Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, played by Freeman, deliberately breached police procedure and protocol to catch a killer, a decision that ultimately cost him his career and reputation.
Set in Swindon, Wiltshire, A Confession, details the disappearance of 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan in March 2011. On a night out with girlfriends, Sian left a nightclub in Swindon Old Town to walk the 15 minutes home to boyfriend Kevin Reape, played by Charlie Cooper (This Country). French pay-tv powerhouse Canal Plus and Fox’s Europe and Africa arm are joining forces on a series adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic novel “The War of the Worlds.” The show will follow the classic alien-invasion story but set the action in the present day. The eight-part drama will start shooting this fall, with Studiocanal and Urban Myth Films on production duty.
The new adaptation was created and written by Howard Overman (“Merlin”). “In many ways, H.G. Wells’ novel is a cautionary tale of racial superiority and ethnic conflict,” he said. “It is these themes that I wanted to explore more fully in my modern re-imagining. I look forward to bringing our bold, fresh and relatable version, inspired by this much-loved story, to a new audience.’’
Canal Plus will run the show in France and French-speaking territories and Fox Networks Group across its extensive footprint in Europe and Africa.

From Primeval to Merlin and Atlantis, Doctor Who's return spawned a host of Saturday teatime dramas that have since disappeared. What next?
It’s Saturday night. BBC 1 is showing Doctor Who. It does this a lot, generally speaking, and has done on and off (sometimes very off) for over fifty years. When the show returned in 2005 it brought with it the realisation that there was a huge family audience un-catered for on Saturday nights, and unfortunately Doctor Who was only on air for a quarter of the year, so it couldn’t do it all by itself.
ITV quickly realised it needed to attract that audience too, and while it had gameshows that dominated the schedules it didn’t have anything like Buck Rogers In The 25th Century or The A Team to put up against the BBC this time. And time was of the essence: new shows had...

Sarah Parish thinks that the BBC didn't want to take the risk on a third series of Atlantis because it was an expensive show that didn't get a mass audience immediately.
The show was axed in January ahead of the broadcast of the second half of its second series.
"It's very sad," Parish - who plays Pasiphaë in the fantasy adventure - told Metro of the cancellation.
"The programme was cancelled because it was expensive to make and because it didn't get a huge audience straight away, so I think it was a risk the BBC didn't want to take."
She added: "I feel sorry for the fans because we had quite a big following. They were loyal and very upset when they found out the programme had been cancelled.

Atlantis co-creator Johnny Capps has said it was "unfair" to axe the show before its second series had finished airing.
Capps told The Guardian that the BBC "had to decide" the fantasy drama's fate within the first six episodes of series two transmitting.
"[That] was unfair because you're making a judgement before the series is even finished - how are you supposed to know how it will be received by the audience?" he said.
"In the middle of the episodes shown before Christmas there was a bit of a drop in viewing figures - but it picked up again towards the end.
"When Breaking Bad started, it had its own difficulty with viewing figures. The second series had a dip, but because it then went on to Netflix, the audience grew.

Atlantis will return to BBC One next month.
The fantasy drama will resume its second series on Saturday, April 11 at 7.45pm.
Based on the Greek myths, Atlantis was cancelled by the BBC earlier this year, but returns to air its final seven episodes.
Series star Jack Donnelly - who plays Jason - previously told Digital Spy that he was "gutted" by news of the show's axing.
"Everything is left up in the air - everything," he said. "I think the ending is brilliant, but they really set it up - the producers definitely had an idea for what the third series was gonna be.
"We'd had massive discussions - me and the other actors - about what might happen and that's all left up in the air."
Atlantis also stars Robert Emms, Mark Addy, Aiysha Hart and Sarah Parish, and was co-created by Misfits writer Howard Overman and Merlin's Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy.

Get your sinking puns at the ready, Atlantis will not be returning after the end of series two…
We’re sad to report that BBC One’s fantasy drama Atlantis has gone the way of Wizards Vs. Aliens and In The Flesh and joined the pile of much-loved high-concept BBC content to be binned in 2015.
While Wizards Vs. Aliens may return eventually though, it seems that Atlantis is well and truly cancelled. A BBC spokesperson told Digital Spy that “the final seven episodes of Atlantis will transmit on BBC One in spring.”
“We would like to thank Urban Myth Films and all the cast and crew but the series will not be re-commissioned,” they added. The show was devised by Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy (who used to helm Merlin), alongside Misfits’ creator Howard Overman. These chaps must be feeling particularly unlucky at the moment, but we look forward to...

Atlantis will not return for a third series.
The fantasy drama will not be re-commissioned once the current run has finished airing, Digital Spy has learned.
Speaking exclusively to DS, a BBC spokesperson said: "The final seven episodes of Atlantis will transmit on BBC One in spring. We would like to thank Urban Myth Films and all the cast and crew but the series will not be re-commissioned.
"We are very proud of both series but to keep increasing the range of BBC One drama we have to make difficult decisions to bring new shows through."
The second series of Atlantis is comprised of 13 episodes - the first six aired late last year before the show went on hiatus, while an exact date for the final seven is yet to be confirmed.
The series, inspired by ancient Greek myths, starred Jack Donnelly as Jason, Mark Addy as Hercules and Robert Emms as Pythagoras.

Back in 2001, the landscape of British teen dramas didn't continue much further than Byker Grove, Grange Hill and a relatively new soap called Hollyoaks.
Since then, we've had plenty of shows that focus on the lives of a group of youths, from Skins to Misfits to Made in Chelsea. But there was one show that arguably kickstarted the modern teen drama without getting the kudos it deserves, and that show was As If.
Last year marked the 10th anniversary since the series came to an end, and so Digital Spy decided to look back on the show and find out what happened to some of its main cast members.
As If launched on January 22, 2001 on Channel 4 in the midweek early evening slot, and was later repeated on Sunday afternoons on T4. From series two onwards, it stayed as a T4 staple, but maintained its young adult themes, running for...

Atlantis makes a welcome return with an action-packed start to a more grown-up second series...
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 A New Dawn Part One
Atlantis series 2 is, it seems, a rebirth for the series, with actors Mark Addy (Hercules) and Jack Donnelly (Jason) suggesting in interviews that writer Howard Overman and producers Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps have created an improvement on the first.
This time around, the show's creators seem to be taking advantage of the storytelling opportunities offered by Atlantis' 8.30pm timeslot, after the mis-step in the first season that saw a programme being broadcast at close to the watershed without any of the maturity that an audience would expect at that time. While A New Dawn Part One wasn't full of nudity, violence and gore, it’s certainly dramatically darker than series one
Starting with King Midas' funeral and Pasiphae attacking, Ariadne darkly states that “this...

The word from Atlantis is that series 2 is much darker and less silly than the first. Here’s our spoiler-free look at episode 1…
When Atlantis came out of the gates last autumn, it was a light, comic Boys’ Own adventure. Its three male leads - the dishy heroic one, the chubby cowardly one, and the nerdy maths one - faced CGI monsters with a mixture of acrobatics, bickering and slapstick. Forays into the darker world of witchcraft and fate were countered by musical comedy stings and pratfalls. Swords were swung. Mythical creatures were battled. Jokes were cracked. Balconies were vaulted off. And a lukewarm average of 5.4 million UK viewers watched it all.
Hoping to increase that number and earn a third series renewal, Atlantis’ creators (Merlin producers Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps, and Misfits’ writer Howard Overman) are reported to have overhauled the second series, making it meaner, moodier, better-paced,...

The biggest problem with Atlantis has always been inconsistency.
BBC One's family fantasy series has been uneven in tone and quality across its first 13 episodes - compare stand-out instalment 'Pandora's Box' to frothy dud 'Hunger Pangs', which aired just two weeks later.
Building on last week's strong set-up, 'Touched by the Gods: Part Two' - the show's final outing for 2013 - provides a satisfying pay-off with a few genuinely surprising twists, but you're left with the feeling that, when series two rolls around, we could be in for more pratfalls, fart jokes and neglect of character.
Atlantis is at its best when, as here, it cuts back on the silliness and treats situations and characters with a little gravity - how good is Mark Addy when he's spared the slapstick and is allowed to actually act, lambasting a heastrong Jason when he announces his plan to rescue Ariande?...
BBC One's family fantasy series has been uneven in tone and quality across its first 13 episodes - compare stand-out instalment 'Pandora's Box' to frothy dud 'Hunger Pangs', which aired just two weeks later.

Myths are malleable, and BBC America's "Atlantis" twists ancient ones into new shapes. The lush 13-episode series launches Saturday, Nov. 23. Set on the lost island of Atlantis, it has a filmic look and tremendous fun with Greek myths.
In this, Hercules is an overweight blowhard played by Mark Addy ("Game of Thrones"). Medusa (Jemima Rooper, "Hex"), the hideous Gorgon who had snakes for hair, is now a sweet young woman. And Jason (Jack Donnelly, "Dancing on the Edge") is a hot traveler from the present.
"What struck me most is why hasn't anyone used this material before," Rooper tells Zap2it. "They are reinventing the stories as they want."
Fittingly, the series opens at sea, with Jason on a quest to find his long-lost father, whose submarine disappeared. Jason's small sub spins out of control and crashes, and he washes up, naked, on a foreign shore.

This is a somewhat strange interview. At the end of July at the Television Critics Association press tour, I sat down with Howard Overman and Johnny Capps to discuss their new BBC America drama Atlantis. At the time, the show was still early in production and all I'd seen was a three-minute clip reel. The drama, a blending of traditional Greek mythology, history, time travel and fantasy archetypes starring Jack Donnelly, Mark Addy and Jemima Rooper, premiered in September on The UK's BBC One and in October on Canada's Space, but it doesn't launch until this Saturday (November 23)...

Like the mythology it patches together on the show, Atlantis itself feels like a pastiche of many other fantasy-adventure series, from Xena to Grimm to Doctor Who (Atlantis is even premiering after an encore of the Doctor Who 50th-anniversary special). Created by Merlin's Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy, and Misfits' Howard Overman, Atlantis is hoping to fill a Merlin-sized (if not a Time Lord-sized) hole in both BBC One and BBC America's schedules. It will certainly fill viewers minds with misshapen mythology, but does so in a fairly charming, family-friendly way. Photos: 'Doctor Who' at

Atlantis has been renewed for a second series.
The BBC One fantasy adventure show, based on Greek mythology, has so far performed strongly in the ratings.
The drama, which stars Jack Donnelly, Robert Emms and Mark Addy, became the biggest new Saturday night drama series launch across all channels since 2006 when it premiered this autumn. However, the number of episodes and an air date for the second series have yet to be confirmed.
Across the first three episodes, the show averaged a consolidated audience of 6.7 million, and is averaging 7.4m viewers.
Charlotte Moore, controller for BBC One, said: "Atlantis delivers original British drama with the kind of scale and ambition that we've come to expect from the cinema.
"It feels very much at home on Saturday nights on BBC One, it's been wonderful to watch Howard [Overman] and the team create a whole new world, brilliantly inspired by Greek mythology which...
