Thailand’s Nation Group news media conglomerate is investing in a forthcoming feature film “Nak Ruk Mak Makk Mak,” the company said. The film is a romantic comedy inspired by Thai ghost tale “Mae Nak Phra Khanong.”
Buoyed by a string of recent successes and a government initiative to bolster national soft power and the creative industries, Thai film is attracting new investors. Thai authorities plan to set up a promotional and funding agency spanning multiple forms of culture, including film, music, food and Muay Thai boxing.
At FilMart last week, Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi hosted a lavish Thai Night promotional event. And the country’s Department of International Trade and Promotion, under the Ministry of Commerce, signed a memorandum of understanding with Hong Kong’s Trade Development Council.

Netflix is broadening its original content output from Thailand, a country with a history of punching above its weight with original genre filmmaking, TV production and creative advertising.
Netflix has produced and released a smattering of individual originals from Thailand over the past few years — including reality series The Stranded and crime thriller Bangkok Breaking — but the lineup unveiled by the streamer at a glitzy event in Bangkok Tuesday evening represents its first full Thai slate. The slate includes four films and two series.
“From broad comedy to twisty thrillers, this is our most diverse lineup of titles to date in Thailand,” said Netflix’s director of content for Thailand, Yongyoot Thongkongtoon.

What we lack more and more these days are epic fight scenes in the final part of kung Fu/Martial Art movies. We have seen less and less one on one fight scenes in the final battle over the past 15-20 years, which is a shame but we have seen recently a few flicks bringing that winning formula back.

Comic book writer Mark Millar talks to us about his work on Kingsman: The Secret Service, storytelling and more...
The latest big screen adaptation of Mark Millar's work, Kingsman: The Secret Service, arrives in UK cinemas this week. It follows the likes of Kick-Ass, Kick-Ass 2 and Wanted to the screen, and Millar also advises Fox on its series of Marvel films. He spared us some time for a chat about his films, storytelling, auctioning names off for charity, and specifically about Kingsman itself.
Here's how it went...
To what extent would you say this is a political story?
Funny you should say that. We were chatting about this earlier, and my friends who are left-wing so it as a left-wing political story about a guy from nothing showing that he’s just as good as people who had everything, and he’s even being better than them by the end.

I don’t watch as many fighting movies as I’d like so when I got the chance to review Warrior King 2 I was at first happy. I’m a Tony Jaa fan, especially because of Ong-Bak so when I watched this I had that movie in my mind as where the bar would be set. Maybe that was unfair or not, but Warrior King 2 is a movie that has the best of intentions, but struggles to see them through.
When Kham’s (Tony Jaa) elephant is stolen he goes on the hunt for the kidnappers, soon finding himself the number one suspect in the death of the man he believes to be to blame. With not only the police on his trail but also...

You don't mess with a man's elephant, especially if that man is Thai martial artist Tony Jaa.
In The Protector 2, Jaa's country bumpkin Kham goes in search of his beloved tusked "brother" Khon, who's been snatched by a cabal of criminals led by a kingpin (RZA) who plans to use him in a political assassination plot.
The ensuing story turns out to be hopelessly convoluted and nonsensical, the ridiculousness matched by Jaa's comical reactions during skirmishes, the pratfalls of cop Mark (Phetthai Vongkumlao), and the multiple instances in which bad guys on bikes clumsily drive off rooftops and bridges to their deaths.
Director Prachya Pinkaew's hectic editing and breakneck pacing turns the action spastic, and his lack of interest in anything approaching co...

If I could have it my way, most every movie starring Tony Jaa wouldn't feature fight scenes such as this one featuring Jaa, for the most part, getting his ass kicked by RZA wearing a suit and tie. Yes, RZA. I don't turn on a Jaa film to watch him getting thrown through set walls or to see how well he's able to make it look like he can't take out an opponent as weak as RZA in a matter of seconds. Jaa kicks ass, he doesn't get his ass kicked, least of all by a guy in a business suit. Sorry, not believing it. Oh, and what's the bit with the hat at the beginning of this clip and the guy that stumbles away flailing his armsc yt id="guySfo1Pgw0" width="500" The Protector 2 is On Demand now and will be in theaters on May 2. The Protector 2 was directed by Prachya Pinkaew, who not only directed the first film but also worked with Jaa on Ong Bak. the movie also features some amazing fight choreography by Jaa and his mentor, Panna Rittikrai. The only thing worth mentioning when it comes to Tony Jaa's The Protector was the staircase tracking shot. It's more than three minutes of balls-to-the-wall action and it's all caught in one shot. But the real star is Tae-joo Na – in only his second ever film role – who shows the same type of martial arts skill that made Jackie Chan famous, mixing slapstick and fighting with consummate ease; and the scene in which he tries out to be a K-Pop star, blending dance with martial arts, are breathtaking.

It’s not a good idea to give Tony Jaa anything sacred or precious. Chances are someone is just going to steal it, kill it, or cook it. “Ong Bak” director Prachya Pinkaew’s “Tom Yum Goong 2″ (aka “The Protector 2″) finds the hero from the original film searching for a missing elephant one more time. Here’s hoping he has better luck this time around. In addition to Jaa, the upcoming sequel features Petchtai Wongkamlao, Marrese Crump, JeeJa Yanin, Dan Chupong, Rhatha Phongam, and RZA. I’m particularly excited about JeeJa Yanin’s involvement with the flick. I could literally watch that girl kick phone books for 90 minutes. Do people still use phone books? Never mind. I feel old. Check out this synopsis: Kham is the last in long line of guards who once watched over the King of Thailand’s war elephants. Traditionally, only the perfect elephants could successfully help defend the throne.

It would appear that the powers that be at Sahamongkol Film in Thailand have taken a breather from holding "How dare Tony Jaa have a career outside of Thailand?" press conferences long enough to remember that they're actually meant to be promoting the upcoming release of Jaa star vehicle Tom Yum Goong 2 right now, and you know what that means? That means it's time for the final trailer for the film.We got some elephant. We got some gunplay. We got fists, elbows, knees, motorcycles and some Jeeja Yanin. We got Mum Jokmok smushing his face up against a window. We got some dodgy CGI (though just a bit), a bit of RZA and a fresh look at that amazing car stunt from the first...

Chicago – It’s difficult to determine whether the Thai action comedy, “This Girl is Badass,” is so stupid it’s funny or just plain stupid. There were long stretches in which I felt utterly dumbfounded by the bizarrely infantile hijinks unfolding on the screen. The film is rated R for violence, but most of the humor seems to be pitched at a third-grade level. It’s like a “Mortal Kombat” game interrupted by knock knock jokes.
Judging by the film’s title, not to mention its cover art, one would assume that the picture consisted purely of wall-to-wall action. Indeed, the heroine, Jukkalan (JeeJa Yanin, a natural beauty refreshingly devoid of makeup), is a skilled and resourceful fighter who can use pretty much any tool at her disposal to obliterate her attackers. In the film’s first (and best) setpiece, she takes on a gang of enemies by beating them...

Director: Petchtai Wongkamlao. Review: Chris Sawin. A man known as Uncle Wang (Petchtai Wongkamlao) runs a movie store and lives with his niece Jakkalan (JeeJa Yanin) who he's raised on his own since she was a child. Jakkalan works as a bicycle delivery runner and is extremely independent, but things become a little complicated when she's hired to smuggle drugs for a local gangster and gets in between an ongoing war between two of the town's most ridiculous druglords. "This Girl is Badass" begins with JeeJa Yanin doing some pretty unbelievable maneuvers on a bicycle (stuff that is logically impossible) while combining it with some tactics that are a bit more grounded. Once you're past that and try to choke down the generic blend of rock music blaring in the background - that you'll have to tolerate over and over again for the next hour and forty minutes - things...

Written & Directed by Petchtai Wongkamlao (The Bodyguard 1 & 2) and starring all round action gal Jeeja Yanin (Raging Phoenix, Chocolate) Thai action comedy This Girl is Badass is coming to the U.S on DVD next month, via Magnolia pictures. If you’re expecting all out action then bare in mind this is comedy heavy (which in Thailand means drag queens, and continuous wack-wack-oops sound effects punctuating every joke) but between the humour there’s plenty of Jeeja kicking ass, to enjoy. This Girl is Badass, streets: May 21, 2013. Synopsis: In This Girl is Badass, Jeeja takes her skills to the next level as a bike messenger who is hired by competing mob bosses to smuggle goods. Caught in the middle and given an ultimatum, the only way out is a confrontation erupting into a battle of bullets, face kicks and blows. This Girl is Badass trailer...

If what you're looking for is subtlety and nuance in a film than Thai comedy is, in general, not the right place to look. They like their laughs big and broad over there and there are few performers that Thai audiences like better than Mum Jokmok - best known to western audiences as Dirty Balls in Ong Bak. Are his balls dirty in upcoming science fiction comedy Soobkuu? Well, he gets a nice scrub down from his facially hairy friend at the end of the trailer so if they are at the beginning they certainly aren't at the end but Jokmok is there front and center as one of the leads in the picture. The story itself? It involves bikers with bad moustaches and silly...

The Kick
Written by Jong-suk Lee, based on a story by Prachya Pinkaew
Directed by Prachya Pinkaew
Thailand/South Korea 2011 Fantasia imdb
Traditionally, films that pit one country’s martial arts against the martial arts from other countries are blood-soaked chauvinistic affairs like One Armed Boxer and its sequel Master of the Flying Guillotine. Both great films, they up the ante on the Kung Fu bragging rights by having the hero Tien Lung (Jimmy Wang Yu) beat the champions of Japan, Korea, Thailand, India and Tibet with literally one arm tied behind his back – or chopped off, depending on how you look at it.
The Kick is a much more gentle film, turning the battle between Korea’s Tae Kwan Do and Thailand’s Muay Thai into a family comedy and adding Thai star Jeeja Yanin to the winning Korean side to salve any hurt Thai feelings. (Almost deliberately, halfway...

It’s been a while since we seen Thai international superstar Tony Jaa, best known for his work on the groundbreaking Ong Bak films & 2005′s Tom Yum Goong or The Protector in the west. So why the hold up, as of May 28th 2010 Jaa had left the film industry & was ordained as a Buddhist monk. After his 2011 return, Jaa started production re – teaming up with action director Prachya Pinkaew. This is his third film along side him and fans worldwide are expecting big things from this film.
So why was the first material scrapped for the movie? When it was 40% of the way through production at present? Tony Jaa during production was to get married, which held back production, then there were rumors flying about the material wasn’t good enough, so they wanted to re-shoot the movie again. After Ong Bak 3, we now want to see Jaa back at his fighting best,...

Since we’ve already seen the South Korean trailer for the “Ong Bak” director’s upcoming martial arts flick “The Kick”, it’s only fair that we get one from a Thai point of view. More importantly, the latest clip allows us to see “Chocolate” star Jeeja Yanin in action. From where I’m seated, the flick looks like a lot of fun, and I’m definitely curious to see how Pinkaew tackles the world of Taekwondo. I’m sure he’ll have no trouble at all making everything severely badass. Need a plot synopsis? Well, here you go: Couple and former Taekwondo champs Moon (Jo Jae-hyeon) and Yun (Ye Ji-won) settle down in Thailand and open a Korean restaurant and Taekwando school. Their three kids are interested in different things; the teenage boy is crazy about Kpop, the girl loves football and Thai dance and only the youngest boy shows any interest in Taekwando.

The Kick Trailer. Prachya Pinkaew‘s The Kick (2011) movie trailer stars Jeeja Yanin, Mum Jokmok, Brahim Achabbakhe, Cho Jae-Hyun, and Yea Ji-won. The Kick‘s plot synopsis: “Couple and former Taekwondo champs Moon (Jo Jae-hyeon) and Yun (Ye Ji-won) settle down in Thailand and open a Korean restaurant and Taekwando school. Their three kids are interested in different things; the teenage boy is crazy about Kpop, the girl loves football and Thai dance and only the youngest boy shows any interest in Taekwando. There, the family made friends with Mum and his niece Wah Wah (Jeeja Yanin), a talented muay Thai boxer. Their live changes when the family and their friends become involved with Korean mobsters who’ve stolen some ancient daggers.”
This is a much better and thorough than The Kick (2011) teaser trailer. Jeeja Yanin kicks a lot of ass here plus more of the humor of the film is shown as well.

Will Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew ever make a martial arts film that doesn't revolve around fighters trying to reclaim some stolen object? Probably not, honestly, but he is at least making the object a little more reasonable in scale with The Kick.Couple and former Taekwondo champs Moon (Jo Jae-hyeon) and Yun (Ye Ji-won) settle down in Thailand and open a Korean restaurant and Taekwando school. The Kick Trailer, The Kick Poster. Prachya Pinkaew‘s The Kick (2011) teaser trailer, movie poster stars Brahim Achabbakhe, Cho Jae-Hyun, Yea Ji-won, Petchtai Wongkamlao, and JeeJa Yanin. The Kick‘s plot synopsis: “A Korean family made up of taekwondo experts moves to Thailand, where they set up a taekwondo gym. However, one member of the family, Taeju, wants to become a famous pop singer instead. The family becomes famous after stopping treasure robbers.”
The Kick teaser trailer is pretty funny. Reminds me of Shaolin Soccer and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin.
The first teaser trailer is focused on showing us the family members in action rather than revealing too much about the plot. It’s essentially a stylised Taekwondo demonstration between two thin slices of banter.

An opening ceremony to officially kick off the production of Tom Yum Goong 2 has already begun last Wednesday with the cast & crew in attendance. To bring the most action packed fighting the studios has to offer for the much anticipated sequel in 3D, action director Panna Rittikrai has assembled a martial arts cast line-up to join Tony Jaa and Jeeja Yanin (aka Jija Yanin). These include Dan Chupong (Dynamite Warrior, Ong Bak 3), Kazu Tang (Raging Phoenix, Bko: Bangkok Knockout) and American martial artist Marrese Crump, who is set to appear in Pittikrai's Formless and RZA's The Man With The Iron Fists. Returning from the first installment is director/producer Prachya Pinkaew and Thai comedian Mum Jokmok (aka Petchtai Wongkamlao). No word yet on...

Jeeja Yanin kicks all sorts of cinematic behind, so it’s not surprising that she would star in a flick called “This Girl is Bad Ass”, also known in Thailand as “Jukkalan”. The title has been altered slightly to better serve the international market, though, given the large amount of martial arts-related mayhem contained within the embedded trailer, I think this particular moniker is a much more appropriate. After all, Jeeja Yanin is fairly bad ass. A plot synopsis? Of course you can have one: Jeeja Yanin Vismitananda (Chocolate and Raging Phoenix) is back in a new action comedy directed by an acclaimed director Petchtai Wongkamlao or Mum Jokmok. The film revolves around Uncle Sawang and his niece Jakkalan (Mum Jokmok and Jeeja) whose lives turn into chaos after Jakkalan is hired to transport some smuggled goods to ruthless gangsters. The action-packed trailer awaits. Source: Twitch function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.

Already released theatrically in Thailand under its original title Jukkalan but for the international market, Sahamongkol presented the action comedy as This Girl is Bad-Ass!! and rightfully so when action heroine Jija Yanin (aka Jeeja Yanin) is delivering the badassery. Meanwhile, Thai comedian Mum Jokmok's role is downplayed in the international trailer, perhaps a wise choice since his brand of comedy may not translate over well to non-Thai speaking audience due to cultural difference.Jeeja' Yanin Vismitananda (Chocolate and Raging Phoenix) is back in a new action comedy directed by an acclaimed director Petchtai Wongkamlao or Mum Jokmok. Ho ho, this is pure marketing gold.Usually, we don't devote an entire post just for the sake of reporting the English title of a foreign film but this is just too fun to pass up. At the Cannes Film Festival, Sahamongkolfilm International was out promoting their films line-up and among them is Jukkalan, an action comedy with leading action star Jija Yanin (aka Jeeja Yanin) and Mum Jokmok (aka Petchai Wongkhamlao). The company has come up with a clever name for the international version which is being prepared for delivery in July and after hearing about it, I gotta say they really hit the nail on the head. Can you guess what it is? Alright, let me tell you. The English title is...waaiitt for itttt....waaiitt...

Tony Jaa is ready to get back to work busting heads and bruising bodies with he knees and elbows. He is set to star in a 3D sequel to Tom Yum Goong a.k.a. The Protector. He will team up once again with director Prachya Pinkaew and fight choreographer Panna Rittikrai for the film, which has a budget of 300 million baht or around $10 million in U.S. currency.
Tom Yum Goong 2 will feature the return of cop sidekick Petthai "Mum Jokmok" Wongkumlao, and will also star JeeJa Yanin, who kicked some major ass in the incredibly awesome martial arts flick Chocolate, which apparently is also getting a 3D sequel.
If you haven't seen Tom Yum Goong yet, you've got to check it out! Jaa plays a villager who chases his stolen elephant to Australia, where he engages in in some awesomely insane fight sequences.
As you know Jaa went...

No doubt hoping to prove there’s more strings to her bow than just all out fight fests (though she does send some teeth flying in this one too) Jeeja Yanin - star of ‘Chocolate’ and ‘Raging Phoenix’ - is back in a new action comedy directed by Petchtai Wongkamlao, and we’ve tracked down an English subbed trailer for the film. This being Thai comedy it has all the staples, wack wack oops by the barrel load and of course drag queens aplenty with the film plot revolving around Uncle Sawang and his niece Jakkalan (Jeeja) whose lives turn into chaos after Jakkalan is hired to transport some smuggled goods, to ruthless gangsters. Not the most original of plots, but it still looks good fun. Jukkalan opens in Thailand April 28.

A trip to the booth of sales agents Golden Network yesterday yielded a first look at the promo for Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew's The Kick. Chocolate's Jija Yanin has a significant support part in this one, as does omnipresent Thai comedian Mum Jokmok, but the stars and an entirely new assortment of Korean taekwondo fighters.Though the footage shown is still totally raw it's also totally impressive. It's been obvious for a while now that Yanin is the new darling of Thai action cinema - she stars in three films this year alone - but equally clear is that Pinkaew has made a major discovery with his young Korean stars. The entire family - Na Tae-joon, Kim Kyung-suk, Cho Jae-hyun and Yi Ji-won -...

Judging by the amount of cornball humor, it appears much of the emphasis is on the comedy rather than a straight forward actioner with Mum Jokmok and other popular Thai comedians in ridiculous outfits. Martial arts fans like myself don't need to worry because Chocolate's Jija Yanin (aka Jeeja Yanin) has a co-starring role and her fierce yet cute presence will surly keep us pleased. The film arrives in theaters in Thailand on April 28th. Thai entertainment show has a little preview from the set of action comedy Jak Ka Ran (จั๊กกะแหล๋น) while filming is in progress. You can expect to see Chocolate's Jija Yanin battling another female fighter for what appears to be a climatic scene. Other than knowing Popular Thai comedian Mum Jokmok - Dirty Balls in Ong Bak - is joining in on the fight, I'm pretty much in the dark on whats the premise and the release date.

Gearing up for an imminent start to production with principal photography just weeks away is Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew's The Kick.
Revolving around a Korean family of taekwondo masters living in Bangkok The Kick will see Pinkaew bring some new moves to his repertoire. The switch in fight disciplines has led to a switch in fight choreographers with muay thai stylist Panna Rittikrai replaced by taekwondo expert Master An of the Korean Tigers but despite the new stunt leader and new fight style Pinkaew's latest won't be entirely without familiar faces.
