Doctor Who season 15 comes to Blu-ray, with Horror Of Fang Rock leading the six-story collection. More here.
Never mind the fact that the entirety of Doctor Who – well, save for an episode or two – is available to watch on the BBC’s iPlayer service. There’s also the not-so-small matter of Doctor Who physical media releases, which continue thanks to the genuinely brilliant line of Blu-ray sets.
Next in line? Some Tom Baker magic, thanks to series 15 of Doctor Who becoming the subject of the latest set. This one runs to seven discs, dating all the way back to 1977, and includes the following stories…
Horror Of Fang Rock
The Invisible Enemy
Image Of The Fendahl
The Sun Makers
Underworld
The Invasion Of Time
Tom Baker is accompanied by Louise Jameson’s Leela in these tales, and we also get the introduction of K9 in there too. Plus, of course, Horror...

Home and Film4 have today announced the programme for the third annual FilmFear season – six days of horror, extreme cinema, cult favourites and special guests coming to Manchester this October.
Acclaimed Scandi fantasy Border, co-written by the author of Let the Right One In, kicks off the season on 26th October and is the first of eight new films from across the globe to screen over the six-day event. A visceral fusion of Nordic noir, social realism and supernatural horror, Border’s genre-defying tone is matched in fellow Swedish title Videoman, a mystery-thriller/relationship-drama that will surprise audiences with its tonal shifts, while the chilling horror St. Agatha from celebrated filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman bolsters the emerging ‘Nunsploitation’ genre. Let the Corpses Tan is a ferocious take on Euro Westerns and Italian crime ‘Poliziotteschi’ genre from Belgian directing duo Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani (The Strange Colour of Your Body...

TV, film and stage actor Bernard Kay has died, aged 86.
In an extremely wide-ranging TV career, he appeared in shows including Coronation Street (as Jim Foster and later Clive Phillips), Foyle's War and Doctor Who (in four roles, most famously as Saladin in 1965 serial The Crusade).
Other TV appearances included Emmerdale Farm, Doctors and Casualty, while his most prominent movie part was as a Bolshevik leader in 1965's Doctor Zhivago.
Kay's friend Toby Hadoke, who confirmed that he was found dead at his London home on Monday (December 29), said: "He was one of those superb understated but versatile actors that we don't seem to have any more. He never gave a bad performance.
"He was greatly admired by his peers. His sense of humour was combative but there wasn't any meanness in him."

Andrew checks William Hartnell's final story, newly released and restored, The Tenth Planet...
This review contains spoilers.
The Tenth Planet, Mondas, is a vampire. So are its inhabitants. This vaguely supernatural aspect of the Cybermen is promptly never mentioned again. Author Dr. Kit Pedler – co-creator of Doomwatch – had begun Doctor Who's glorious tradition of turning scientific theories into fantasy yarns, the pseudo-science in the background just as motivated by narrative necessity as before.
Compared with the titular entity, there's a lot that's grounded about the final First Doctor story. Set on an Antarctic Base in the distant future of 1986, the space programme is in full swing, and it's a multi-national organisation (courtesy of the script and good casting decisions by director Derek Martinus). Sexually frustrated men of all creeds and colours gather to supervise routine probe flights. It's like a British version...

Andrew checks out the new Scream Of The Shalka DVD release, out on Monday the 16th of September...
Scream of the Shalka has value beyond being a mere curio. An flash-animated feature made for Doctor Who's Fortieth anniversary in 2003, and broadcast on the BBC website (it's still there), it was intended to be an official continuation of the show after the 1996 TV Movie. It was relegated to non-canonical status when the announcement of the show's return to television occurred in September of that year.
So, besides being another story in its own right (and can now be judged as such, without the pressures it was under on original broadcast), it's also of interest as a different production team's take on the series, and as an example of how the show might work as an animated feature (one of the many things I'll happily...

Meanwhile, living conditions on Proxima Major have become harsh and hostile. Comedy and geekery arrives in London, at The Geekatorium. details here...
From The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy to Red Dwarf, the worlds of geekdom and comedy have had a long and happy association, and lately they seem to be closer than ever. In recent times we've had Dara O Briain doing maths on the telly, comics such as Robin Ince and Helen Keen educating us about science on the radio, and the likes of Toby Hadoke speaking about their nerdy passions at the Edinburgh Festival.
Continuing that grand tradition, February 10th sees the launch of The Geekatorium, a London-based comedy night promising a mixture of stand-up, sketches, live music and improvisation, with acts invited to come along and perform material on the subjects they're most passionate about, be that Star Wars or Sartre – no subject is off limits. “I wanted The Geekatorium to be...

Gervais collaborator gets his own TV pilot, Pegg's Comic-Con costume fetish causes offence, and Russell Brand wants to be a vicar ... so it seems
Best of the week's news
Stephen Merchant is working on his own TV project – his first outside of his partnership with Ricky Gervais. The lanky star is to write and appear in a pilot entitled Hello Ladies, based on his 2011 standup tour of the same name. The pilot – like the standup show – will focus on Merchant's supposed cackhandedness with the opposite sex, and will shoot later this year, according to Deadline. Merchant (who will also executive produce) has written the episode with Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, both former writers on the Us version of The Office. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky also worked on the comedy films Year One and Bad Teacher.
Lovers of comedy, look away now: Russell Crowe is to direct a biopic of Bill Hicks.

Well, after the last adventure, fighting a dalek who decided to be a high priest, we find our crew in need of some rest and relaxation. They go to Brisbane, Australia, hometown to Tegan (Janet Fielding), in order to unwind. This gives Tegan the chance to meet up with old friends, gives the Doctor (Peter Davison), the chance to take in some cricket, and gives Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) the chance to be basically baffled. Everyone seems to be having a good time.
This of course cannot last. Tegan hears that a reporter she’s friends with (Toby Hadoke), has gone missing, and he’s one of many who have. The Doctor does some investigations and soon the team is off to an alien planet.
Or are they? When they arrive, they notice the world looks exactly like London during the days of the Tudors. They even spot familiar landmarks,...

Actor with poise and presence, best known as Alfred the butler in Tim Burton's Batman
The actor Michael Gough, who has died aged 94, was an arresting presence on stage, television and film for the entire postwar period, notably as the butler Alfred Pennyworth in Tim Burton's Batman movies. Eventually he just voiced roles, as with the Dodo Bird in the same director's Alice in Wonderland film last year, but always to striking effect.
Gough started in the Old Vic company in London before the second world war, but it took till 1946 for his career proper to get off to a flying start in the West End, in Frederick Lonsdale's But for the Grace of God. The fistfight-to-the-death scene was done with such startling verisimilitude that nearly all the stage furniture was demolished nightly, and Gough broke three ribs and injured the base of his spine. So copiously...

Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf writer and performer Toby Hadoke has been embarking on something of a "world tour" with his one man show this year, and his trip to New Zealand has resulted in a quite different interview to the usual ones. Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf tells the amusing tale of Hadoke's life against the backdrop of an obsession with the series, with loads of little gems in it. I don't recall any reference to this detail from the audio recording, however - likely...

It's the kind of title no one wants to see linked to their name in the press - but comedian and writer Toby Hadoke has been coined "Superfan" by Digital Spy! Toby Hadoke's Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf one-man show was broadcast on Radio 4 in 2007 (and is available to buy) compared Matt Smith's casting as a 26-year-old to that of Peter Davison in 1981, when he was just 29. A Doctor Who superfan has hailed the casting of Matt Smith in the show's lead role. Stand-up comedian Toby Hadoke, whose Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf one-man show was broadcast on Radio 4 in 2007, compared the appointment of 26-year-old Smith to that of Peter Davison in 1981. "I hated Peter Davison when he was cast because he was young," he said."He wasn't The Doctor I was used to, and because I was going through that adolescent phase of fandom where you actually get your joy out of the programme by being cross with it. "Fortunately I'm (more)...
