Launched in 1977, the Voyager programme saw two probes sent out to explore the solar system. They are now the most distant objects from Earth ever produced by humanity, having passed through the boundary of the heliosphere which surrounds the solar system and out into interstellar space. It’s quite possible that, in time to come, they will will be the last identifiable remnant of our civilisations. Though they are now coming to the end of their working lives, some data continue to be received by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Jpl) and processed by the Voyager team – but what does it mean to be a part of that team, and to have worked on the same project for 45 years?
Billy Miossi’s documentary is elevated by a wonderful eye for detail. Visiting the team’s offices, we see piles of books and folders, post-it notes everywhere, a note taped to printer saying.

May release planned for the documentary about engineers on the Voyager mission.
Gravitas Ventures has acquired worldwide rights to space exploration documentary It’s Quieter in the Twilight, which had its premiere at last year’s SXSW festival.
The film, from first-time director Billy Miossi, will be distributed theatrically and on demand, starting in North America on May 19.
The documentary focuses on the engineers from South Korea, the US and other parts of the world who guide the two robotic spacecraft of the Voyager mission, which were launched in 1977 and provided data on the outer planets of the solar system.

Chicago – As the 2022 SXSW Festival wraps up this weekend, many filmmakers brought their new works, and one that stood out is a new documentary on Voyager, the space probes (1 & 2) that were launched in 1977 and still miraculously are exploring the interstellar galaxy. Filmmaker Billy Miossi profiles the crew keeping tabs on the probes in “it’s Quieter in the Twilight.”
The two Voyager crafts were conceived as an experiment to explore our solar system close up, as the planetary alignment at the time of launch was a rare occurrence. With each new view of these mysterious orbs, the plucky vehicles sent back incredible images to a cheering scientific community. The mission began with 1200 engineers, and even as the explorers continued to send back key and miraculous data, the dedicated mission team has shrunk to less than 20 vital caretakers.

“It’s Quieter in the Twilight,” directed by Billy Miossi, will have its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival on March 13, where it plays in the documentary feature competition.
The film follows a select group of ageing engineers who, in an unremarkable office space, sacrificed promotion, postponed retirement and dedicated their lives to stay with the longest running and farthest reaching mission in NASA’s history. Fighting outdated technology and time, Voyager’s flight team pursues humankind’s greatest exploration.
“There’s a unique dichotomy that drew me into the story of the ageing Voyager mission. The grandest feat of human exploration being steered by a humble few sitting in a drab office space,” said Miossi in his director’s statement. “They seek no fame, no recognition. Instead, they’re content to quietly contribute a novel expertise for the sake of a deeper understanding of the...
