It took an extra year (thanks to the pandemic), but the inaugural cohort from the Netflix Series Director Development Program is finally celebrating its completion.
Nine directors hoping to expand their opportunities in episodic work — nominated by a creative executive at the streamer and ultimately selected by Netflix exec producers — have spent the past two years participating in a part-time program that involved weekly classes and a dozen training sessions as well as hands-on experience and directing assignments on a Netflix show. Three participants did not direct an episode through the program as a result of the pandemic and what Netflix described as other “unforeseen circumstances,” but all were paid DGA scale, and also received stipends, travel and accommodations for shadowing assignments.
“The Netflix Original Series Directors Development Program aims to be the gold standard in the industry,” said the workshop’s director and lead mentor,...

Showtime has elected against moving forward with a second season of its anthology series “The First Lady.” The decision comes a little over six weeks after the series aired its Season 1 finale on the network.
“Showtime can confirm that the anthology series ‘The First Lady’ will not be moving forward with another season,” a Showtime spokesperson told Variety. “We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast, led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders.”
The first season of the anthology series cut between three different eras of the White House, following the political and private lives of Eleanor Roosevelt (Anderson), Betty Ford (Pfeiffer) and Michelle Obama (Davis).
“The First Lady” received a lukewarm response from critics.

Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson and Michelle Pfeiffer take on three former First Ladies in Showtime “The First Lady” series, which premieres April 17. But the pressure was most intense for Davis in assuming the role of Michelle Obama, who is very much alive and whose four years in the White House were far more well-documented than the lives of Eleanor Roosevelt (who’s played by Anderson) and Betty Ford (Pfeiffer).
During a TCA Panel on Wednesday, Davis admitted that – even though she had previously met Michelle Obama and received her blessing – approaching this role was more daunting than any other she’s played so far.
“It’s so specific and I had the insurmountable task [because] everyone knows who Michelle Obama is, everybody has claimed ownership of her. There is nothing about her that they want desecrated. A lot of times, when you approach a character, you want their mess, but with Michelle Obama…...

Being the First Lady is never the second hardest job.
Showtime’s anthology drama series “The First Lady” captures the legacy of three former FLOTUSes: Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis).
“The First Lady has to be a special kind of woman,” Pfeiffer as Ford explains in the trailer, while Davis’ Obama pushes back against being branded as the “Black Martha Stewart.”
Meanwhile, Anderson’s Roosevelt tells President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Kiefer Sutherland) that she has her own life, which seems to include a love affair with Lorena “Hick” Hickok, played by Lily Rabe.
“The First Lady” premieres Sunday, April 17, with a special Presidents’ Day weekend installation featuring out-of-home advertising and digital projections, near federal landmarks in highly trafficked travel locations, including New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Viola Davis takes on the role of Michelle Obama in the official trailer for Showtime’s upcoming anthology drama “The First Lady.”
The trailer, which dropped Thursday morning, features glimpses of the Obamas in the White House (O-t Fagbenle is playing President Barack Obama) as Michelle navigates public life and mounting political pressures.
It also shows Michelle Pfeiffer unravelling as Betty Ford, the First Lady who went on to co-found the Betty Ford Center, a substance abuse treatment organization. Aaron Eckhart plays her husband, President Gerald Ford.
Gillian Anderson takes on Eleanor Roosevelt as she strives for agency as the First Lady married to President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Kiefer Sutherland).

The Society is dead and buried at Netflix.
Despite scoring a second season renewal, the streamer canceled the series last week because of difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As a result, fans have been left wondering what might have happened in the second season, and series creator Christopher Keyser is offering up some teases to fans.
“We spent a lot of time talking about the reasons why the children of West Ham became the children of New Ham — what the cause of that was, how they might return home,” Keyser told Variety.
He explained that the second season would have further explored the open field with farmable land, which became crucial as New Ham’s resources started to run out.
We would have delved deeper into“the establishment of what we called the ‘outpost,’ and the eventual conflict between the outpost and the town over control,” Keyser said, adding...

This past March, Netflix’s The Society was in final stages of pre-production, and the cast was getting ready to travel to Massachusetts to start filming Season 2 of the mystery Ya drama series when the coronavirus pandemic brought Hollywood to a standstill.
Five months later, with Hollywood slowly easing back into production, the producers were making tentative plans for a few weeks of prep leading to a potential October production restart when Netflix on Friday reversed its Season 2 renewal decision. The Society was one of two Ya series with Season 2 orders impacted by Covid-19 that were canceled by the streamer, along with I Am Not Okay With This.
The Society creator Chris Keyser, who also co-created the popular Fox coming-of-age drama Party Of Five and its recent Freeform reboot, has seen his fair share of cancellations during his three decades in the TV business to date. Yet, The Society felt different.

Christopher Keyser, who created “The Society,” found out Thursday that Netflix was suddenly pulling the plug on his show. The streamer, which also canceled “I Am Not Okay With This,” released a statement Friday saying, “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by Covid.”
“We spent the last bunch of months getting ready to go back again, dealing with all the Covid protocols,” Keyser told Variety Monday. “And then I got a call from Netflix saying, ‘We have made this decision.’ It was obviously pretty upsetting and abrupt.” Keyser, whose credits include co-creating “Party of Five,” said he and co-executive producer Pavlina Hatoupis spent the rest of Thursday and Friday calling the cast and crew preparing them before the news broke.

It's the end of the line for two Netflix fan-favorites despite previously announcing renewals for them.
The streamer has officially canceled The Society, and I Am Not Okay With This, and the reason for the cancelations is not all that surprising.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This,” the streaming service told Deadline.
“We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by Covid, and we are grateful to these creators, including: Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry at 21 Laps Entertainment for I Am Not Okay With This; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, casts and crews who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world.”
The decision was announced on Friday.

Though it’s been largely business as usual for Netflix during the coronavirus crisis, the streaming giant may have just suffered its first Covid-related cancellations.
Deadline reports that Netflix has canceled teen superpower drama I Am Not Okay With This, cutting it short after one season. Additionally Netflix will not be moving forward with the previously announced The Society season 2.
Netflix had not officially announced I Am Not Okay With This season 2 yet, but per Deadline the show had quietly picked up for a second season, with scripts having been written and production set to begin. The difficulties (and swelling budgets) associated with filming safely during a global pandemic caused Netflix to rethink the renewal.

Netflix have been renewing an awful lot of their shows lately as they look to keep their seat on the streaming throne. After all, competition is fiercer than ever these days, and if they’re going to remain as the top dog, they need to be offering the best of the best when it comes to original content.

“The Society” will not return for a second season as planned at Netflix, while the streamer is also not moving forward with a second season of “I Am Not Okay With This,” Variety has confirmed.
“I Am Not Okay With This” had been renewed after its first season aired back in February, but its renewal had not been announced. “The Society” had been picked up for a second season last July. The team behind “I Am Not Okay With This” had already begun work on writing a second season.
According to an individual with knowledge of the decisions, both shows were well liked internally at Netflix in addition to the critical acclaim they received upon release, but the plug was pulled on both due to the uncertainty around when they could begin production due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic also leading to added budget increases for health and safety reasons.

There are so many ways that one could start a review of White Bird in a Blizzard that it was tough to figure out where to begin but here’s a shot: this film is an interesting look at depression, teenage angst, and life in the suburbs for about 86 minutes of it’s 91 minute running time that completely comes undone in the final 5 minutes of the film.
Kat (Shailene Woodley) is a girl who is coming into her own. She’s a few months away from college, enjoying a romance with the boy next door (Shiloh Fernandez), and is really beginning to understand her sexuality. But all is not well in paradise, her father is distant and her mother (Eva Green) is a mess, drinking heavily and struggling to hold on. One day her mother vanishes, and Kat and her father try to resume their lives.

The Living End (1992). Totally F***ed Up (1993). The Doom Generation (1995). Nowhere (1997). Splendor (1999). Mysterious Skin (2005). Smiley Face (2007). Kaboom (2011). VIP jacket wearing Gregg Araki has been breaking into Park City mode for more than the eight films mentioned. An integral part of the moving into his third decade, White Bird In A Blizzard is a French funded thriller and much like Kaboom, this is a welcome switch of pace for the filmmaker.
