Very few fundraising events bring together the combined talents of Zooey Deschanel and former United States Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, but that’s exactly what’s happening Sunday with United to Save the Vote. These leading lights of Hollywood and the Beltway will join a star-stunned lineup that also includes Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, Sia, Dave Matthews, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott, George Lopez, Kenny G and Keenan Thompson.
Ed Helms will host the Zoom-enabled event, which is free to view. The audience is encouraged to donate, and the variety show’s backers, which include the non-profit RepresentUs, hope to raise $2 million to support voter safety and access. The show is produced by Tara Smith Swibel, Brian Swibel, and Adam Westbrook, partners in the theatrical company Triptyk, and written by Matt O’Brien, the head writer at “Conan.”
“This is a non-partisan organization,” says Tara Smith Swibel.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (Vvmf) is commemorating the 35th anniversary of The Wall in 2017 and an esteemed group of Americans, led by The Honorable Chuck Hagel, 24th Secretary of Defense and Vietnam veteran, have come together to form the 35th Anniversary of The Wall committee to help commemorate this milestone.
Vvmf will host a series of events in Washington, D.C. in the week leading up to Veterans Day in November to honor and remember the service and sacrifice of those who served in Vietnam and their families.
“The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is the perfect tribute and a fitting reminder of that divisive war and its enormous human cost to our country,” said American entrepreneur, philanthropist and Vietnam veteran Bob Parsons. “Many of us who served in Vietnam and made it back received either a rude or no reception. Be that as it may, our 58,000 plus brothers and sisters...

On Tuesday morning's Morning Joe, former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge walked back comments he made, in the hours after Monday's bombings of the Boston Marathon, that the evidence suggested a "coordinated attack" that was "perhaps associated with a broader international jihadist organization." Co-host Mika Brzezinski asked Ridge about those comments, which he admitted were based on facts that have now changed, and concluded that "perhaps I shouldn't jump to conclusions based on what has been reported because it's not as factual as I thought it had been."...

Gettysburg, Pa. — With his new film about the 16th president in theaters, two-time Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg was to make the keynote address during ceremonies that celebrate the 149th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address."
Spielberg's remarks at Soldier's National Cemetery in Gettysburg on Monday were to be accompanied by a recitation of the famous speech by a Lincoln re-enactor. Sixteen citizenship candidates from 11 countries were scheduled to take the oath of allegiance.
The event at Gettysburg National Military Park was expected to take about an hour, and was free. Previous speakers include presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower, and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.
Carl Sandberg, in his biography of Lincoln, said it was a speech that conveyed the message that democracy was worth fighting for.
"It had the dream touch of vast and furious events epitomized for any foreteller to read what was to come,...

The fifth game of the NBA finals is on tonight and if you've been following along at all, you'll know that the series is tied up at 2-2. The games I've seen so far (the first three, I missed the last one because of work and will be missing tonight's game for the same reason) have been back and forth the whole time and incredibly exciting. Except I don't really want exciting, because I'd just like the Heat to win. Frankly, it's probably a little better for my sanity that I won't be able to get any information on the game other than what the little Espn app on my phone is able to tell me. Anyone who's not watching basketball tonight, I hope you're either big "So You Think You Can Dance" fans or have some nice DVDs to get through because otherwise you're Sol. Here's Thursday night's TV:...

Rocking the house at the Safari Club International annual convention, Sarah Palin warned Obama was out for their gun rights-and dangled a major hint about 2012. Andrew Romano reports.
It's 8:00 on Saturday night in Reno, and 2,500 of the most avid members of Safari Club International-the sort of hunters who target lions instead of, say, ducks--are packed into the Tuscany Ballroom at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino, poking at their Chocolate Hazelnut Bombe with Frangelico Cream. Some are dressed in tuxedos; others are sporting ankle-length hides and Flintstone-style fang necklaces. In the world's largest and most active big-game hunting organization, "semi-formal" seems to have many meanings. The assembled masses have reached that special part of the evening when the filet mignon is finished, the awards have been awarded, and the green and blue laser beams that periodically shoot from the stage are no longer as dazzling as they were two hours ago.

Although Salt star Angelina Jolie is the one getting the most photographers' shutters clicking, the movie has a whole team of talented people behind it. It's impossible to overlook her costars Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor's dynamic presences onscreen, or director Phillip Noyce's (Catch a Fire, Rabbit-Proof Fence) touch when it came to frenetic action scenes. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was also behind the scenes to shepherd Salt from script to screen.
As Salt stomps into theaters, it seems like spies are everywhere, and not just in the movies. Earlier this summer came news that 11 Russian spies were arrested by the feds; neighbors and friends were shocked, although perhaps one of the stories that's gotten the most mileage is about the sexual proclivities of one of the younger spies, Anna Chapman, whose photos have been making the rounds.
In any case, for a few days in D.C.

When Sony brought a bunch of journalists down to Washington D.C. so we could interview the cast and creators of Salt, they also included a "spy experience" as part of the package. Not only were we given guided tours of the International Spy Museum and allowed to ooh and ahh over the lipstick pistol and James Bond's Aston Martin, but we had dinner with a specially assembled panel of espionage experts, from former CIA agent and Salt consultant Melissa Mahle to Tom Ridge, the first-ever head of Homeland Security. Before dinner the experts, who also included ex-kgb Agent Oleg Kalugin and former Homeland Security communications director Kirk Whitworth, sat down for a press conference in which they discussed the film, their careers, and the fact that Salt's seemingly implausible plot about a sleeper cell of Russian spies had actually made its way to the real-life headlines. Check out the...

Brüno (Blu-ray)Universal Home ENTERTAINMENT2009/Rated R/ 82 minsNow Available – List Price $39.98'Brüno' wasn't exactly a memorable experience for me when I saw it in theaters. I'm gonna be honest: I fell asleep on it. But that wasn't the fault of the movie and can be attributed to my lack of sleep after attending so many screenings during the summer movie season. I didn't bother to give it a second viewing since El Guapo gave it such a good write up, but I didn't hesitate to say yes when the blu-ray was offered to me. I'm glad I did, because viewing a film in the comfort of your own home can sometimes be a rewarding experience. If it's a comedy laden with gags and extreme humor like this one, you have the luxury of hitting to rewind button to catch everything unlike in a movie theater. I don't think...

Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen), the fabulous host of Austria’s top fashion TV show Funkyzeit (No.1 in all German-speaking countries sans Germany), has been blacklisted for creating a disruptive scene during Milan Week. He decides to do what every celeb-seeking whore would do: come to America to become famous. When his acting career fizzles shortly after becoming an extra on the set of Medium, Bruno switches gears and becomes a celebrity interviewer. After all, Mario Lopez is doing it.
Poor Paula Abdul. When furniture doesn’t arrive for their chit-chat, Bruno pays off some Mexicans to act as furniture. Witness the hilarity as Ms. Abdul speaks of her sensitivity towards mankind while sitting on a human bench. Later on, after the test screening of his TV pilot is denounced by the panel (on Jamie-Lynn Spears’ fetus: abort it or keep it? “Abort it.”), Bruno intends to gain celebrity by solving...

Beyond discovering that you can lick a nipple—but can't cup a buttock—in Arkansas, you won't learn much from NPR's Brüno-centric interview with Sacha Baron Cohen. But it's worth checking out anyway, since it's one of those incredibly rare interviews in which the actor speaks as himself, and not one of his famed outlandish characters (Borat, etc.). With director Larry Charles in tow, Cohen talks with Fresh Air about some of the film's most notable scenes—the hunting trip, cage match, etc.—and the dangers he faced while going undercover in the deep South. The most interesting tidbit...

While President Barack Obama was just beginning his vacation in Martha's Vineyard, Bill and Hillary Clinton had problems kicking off their own summer trip to Bermuda. It seems that Hurricane Bill was too much for the Clintons, who fled the island as the storm rumbled by. But all was not lost: Bill did get in a round of golf at the Port Royal Golf Course, a facility that has hired four workers from former president George W. Bush's all-inclusive resort in neighboring Cuba, Guantánamo Bay. While we're on the subject of W., his policies continue to come under criticism. Bush's first Homeland Security secretary, Tom Ridge, alleges in his new book, The Test of Our Times, that he was under pressure from the Bush White House to elevate the terror threat level right before the 2004 election. We'd be willing to bet that if we took a fine-tooth comb to...

St. Paul, Minn. -- A prisoner of war who beat the odds during five years of brutality in a Hanoi jail cell, John McCain beat the odds again Thursday night when he accepted the Republican nomination for president.
The story of McCain's youth was told in the 2005 TV movie "Faith of Our Fathers." But walking up to the podium at the Xcel Energy Center, the now 72-year-old McCain turned another page in a new script that brought him from nearly failed candidate to a possible Hollywood-style triumph as president of the United States.
"I'm going to fight to make sure every American has every reason to thank God, as I thank Him: that I'm an American, a proud citizen of the greatest country on earth," McCain said. "And with hard work, strong faith and a little courage, great things are always within our reach. Fight with me. Fight with me.

John McCain added to the historic nature of the 2008 presidential race Friday by picking Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate – only the second woman ever to appear on a major-party presidential ticket. Palin, 44, beat out a host of better-known candidates for the nod, including Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Homeland Security secratary Tom Ridge (also the former governor of Pennsylvania), and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. Running on a ticket promising heavy reform, Palin won election to the governor's mansion in Alaska in 2006 after she unexpectedly beat then-Gov. Frank Murkowski in the Republican gubernatorial primary.

Presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama is poised to name his running mate, according to The New York Times. While the paper reports that Obama has yet to inform his prospective vice-president of the nod, the candidate's focus is primarily on three men: Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana and foreign policy expert Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware. The Times cited unnamed advisers to the Democratic hopeful as saying Obama had reached his decision last week while on vacation in Hawaii. As for John McCain, the Republican frontrunner will announce his running mate on his 72nd birthday,...
