Amazon on Thursday revealed the next four films to be released next year as part of its “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series. The first four genre movies in the collection launched on Prime Video this month.
Just like the first four films of the program, the next group represents four unique stories that are connected by common themes, including institutional horrors and personal phobias. The “social thrillers,” as Amazon terms them, are helmed by up-and-coming directors.

Variety reports that Vendome Pictures has acquiring The Widow as spec script written by Ray Wright. Vendome CEO Philippe Rousselet will produce along with Steve Golin and Alix Madigan of Anonymous Content. Vendome will also finance, and Vendome's Guy Stodel and Sarah Schweitzman will oversee the project on behalf of Vendome.
Producers are seeking a director with plans to commence production this year.
The Widow follows a young woman who befriends a lonely widow, only to discover that their encounter was not a coincidence.

Sci-Fi fans, we have some great news for you. Stephen Tunney's young adult novel One Hundred Percent Lunar Boy is set to be adapted by Timur Bekmambetov's Bazelevs banner. Variety reports that feature film rights have been acquired and Edward Ricourt (Now You See Me) has been hired to adapt.
The book combines "a visually inventive world with a powerful coming-of-age story about a boy finding his place in the universe. Set 2000 years in the future, novel's protag is 16-year-old Hieronymus Rexaphin, who lives on the now-colonized moon, where he meets a girl from Earth who is inexplicably drawn to him because of his special--some say dangerous--condition, which gives him the ability to see the future path of time and matter." This is a pretty awesome ability to have, and I can just see how Bekmambetov's visual effects team will be a major asset in bringing this story to life.

Vendome Pictures (Source Code, Larry Crowne) has named acquisitions exec Guy Stodel as president of production. He will report to vet producer and Vendome CEO Philippe Rousselet, who will oversee the Vendome slate, as well as Vendome’s Co-ceo Fabrice Gianfermi. Stodel will run and ramp up development and production of Vendome’s upcoming films; the goal is to produce two to three global commercial titles a year. Stodel leaves two years of indie production to join Vendome; he produced the American remake of French comedy Le Mac, starring Ed Helms. In 2008, Stodel joined the short-lived Paramount Vantage; he left in 2009 as exec v-p of production and acquisitions. At Paramount, Stodel acquired and developed the script Man on a Ledge, now a Summit release. Stodel ...

Since he’s consistently funny, it’s been making me very happy to see Ed Helms earn more and more lead roles this year. Not only did he have Cedar Rapids, but he’s already signed on to star in True North, and Variety now says that he’ll star in a remake of Le Mac. The original film was a French comedy that followed “a mild-mannered banker forced to masquerade as a notorious gangster and pimp.” He’s forced to do this because his twin brother — an actual gangster and pimp — is planning a big crime. The police tell him that he can either help them out by impersonating his twin, or go to jail for twenty years.
Producing will be Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld of Red Hour Films, as well as Guy Stodel, the former head of Paramount Vantage; he was the one to bring the project to Helms‘ attention.

- Paramount Vantage we hardly knew you. From an outsiders point of view, you'd think that winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for 2007's No Country for Old Men and winning Best Actor and Best Cinematography for There Will Be Blood would be a sign of better things to come, but at the end of the day, it's not the number of Oscars you win, but the plus and minus on the balance sheet. Vantage sealed its fate way before Guy Stodel came on board and even when Amy Israel was in charge the returns weren't in the plus. Paramount Pictures might be currently looking to merge and cut expenses, but it was a continual set of major faux-pas that has ultimately lead to the demise of the indie unit. When they did away with the Paramount Classics label, they got rid of pick-ups with very little returns

Paramount Pictures convulsed with more staff reductions Tuesday. The studio disbanded its New York literary department, including head Aimee Shieh, as it eliminated 31 positions among studio production departments.
Among those affected by the restructuring are head of physical production Georgia Kacandes, casting head Gail Levin, senior vps of production Ben Cosgrove and Dan Levine and Paramount Vantage executive vp production and acquisitions, Guy Stodel.
Newly installed Film Group president Adam Goodman notified employees of the changes Tuesday morning.
Layoffs, job eliminations and reorganization account for the total reduction in positions in the creative, casting and physical production departments, as well as at the Vantage label. The rest of the studio's New York office remains intact, including its publicity and marketing departments and a few distribution personnel.
A decision is forthcoming about whether the studio will revive a lit presence in New York or Los Angeles.

The new Paramount Vantage is reaching across the Viacom hall for a hybrid project with Comedy Central.
The companies have jointly acquired the rights to "Ghosts/Aliens," Trey Hamburger's supernatural comedy novel, and will develop as both a series and feature.
Hamburger's book, released in November, centers on two pothead friends who set out on a quest to discover both ghosts and aliens. The series and film could be developed concurrently, execs said. Phil Johnston will write the script.
The project is the second collaboration between the network and the specialty unit (the companies earlier announced they'd partner up for "Beat Kip"), which under Guy Stodel aims to make more comedies and genre films.
Comedy Central programming president Lauren Corrao, meanwhile, has said she wants to beef up the net's feature development.

- I wonder if three or four years down the road we'll be looking at Paramount Vantage in terms of "before" and "after". The median point might be when the parent company merged operations to save a buck, but it will probably be how their development slate changed -- become more genre specific. With not too many future NCFOMs, Into the Wilds, There Will Be Bloods in the pipeline, today's announcement belongs to the batch of comedy projects that Pv's president Guy Stodel is shepherding, re-tooling the division with the type of fair that seems fit for a certain 18-25 demographic that is elusive with more serious bait. Paramount Vantage has taken another hit with label president Nick Meyer's exit.
Meyer, who had been co-president, took on the top Vantage spot solo in January when John Lesher was promoted to president of Paramount Film Group.
Thursday's move is the latest in the specialty label's metamorphosis from an artist-friendly boutique that produced such films as "No Country for Old Men" and "Into the Wild" into an acquisitions-only outfit.
In June, Vantage's marketing, distribution and physical production units were merged into Paramount proper. The next month, dozens of Vantage employees were laid off.
Guy Stodel, who joined Vantage in July as executive vp production and acquisitions, will continue as topper but with a narrowed scope that covers acquisitions and international co-productions.

Paramount Vantage has bought its first project of the Guy Stodel era, signing on for the crime drama "Buried," with Todd Field attached to direct.
Brad Ingelsby will write the screenplay, which centers on a couple who are forced to cope with the fallout on their relationship after they commit a crime. Alexandra Milchan is on board to produce the picture along with Field.
The story, which also contains elements of dark comedy, is based on an article written by Hillel Levin and James Keene. The duo had previously set up an untitled undercover-prison drama at Paramount based on Keene's life.
The William Morris-repped Ingelsby has been busy of late; the scribe, who is already attached to Ridley Scott's "The Low Dweller," signed on last week for Sam Raimi's "Sleeper." Field is on board to direct the Cormac McCarthy adaptation "Blood Meridian" for Scott Rudin.

Paramount Pictures has formed the Paramount Worldwide Acquisitions Group, an acquisitions and regional production hub that will feed Paramount Pictures International and the recently revamped specialty wing Paramount Vantage.
The new group, led by Matt Brodlie, Vantage's senior vp production and acquisitions, will acquire films for distribution and seek out local production and co-production opportunities globally. Its initial focus will include territories where Paramount already has direct distribution, such as the U.K., Spain, Australia, France, Japan and Latin America.
Brodlie will report to Ppi president Andrew Cripps and Vantage president Nick Meyer.
"This development gives us the opportunity to leverage a solid existing infrastructure to service the studio's acquisition needs on a global level," Cripps and Meyer said Tuesday. "As the international marketplace continues to grow, this allows us the ideal structure to expand our activity in this area while fully utilizing the skill set of the accomplished team we have in place."
Vantage staffers joining Brodlie in Pwag include Los Angeles-based Joe Matukewicz, vp acquisitions and co-production; Ben Cotner, executive director of acquisitions and co-productions; and director of acquisitions Mary John Frank. International Vantage staffers on the team include London-based vp acquisitions and co-productions Berenice Fugard, London-based director of acquisitions Alexei Boltho and France-based director of acquisitions and co-productions Karen Adler.
"The growth potentials for Paramount are worldwide," Brodlie said. "My team and I look forward to collaborating with the many filmmakers and producers we have worked with and fostering new relationships to unlock opportunities for many years to come."
The new division partly settles the fates of many key Vantage staffers since it merged with big Paramount and Guy Stodel replaced Amy Israel as executive vp production and acquisitions last week. All new Pwag employees technically will serve a dual role in both Vantage and Pwag rather than shift from one entity to the other, and Brodlie and Stodel will work in tandem.
The Paramount move echoes Sony's creation of its worldwide acquisitions group. Spwag has been responsible for bringing over television shows for domestic consumption, acquiring films for theatrical and straight-to-dvd release and launching the Stage 6 Films label.
Paramount's angling for a greater share of international acquisitions likely is part of an effort to compensate for the looming absence of DreamWorks product if and when Spielberg and company officially sever ties with the studio that bought it three years ago. Vantage is halving its projected slate to four to six films a year as its marketing and distribution departments have been brought within the studio proper.
Staff cuts still are expected across all divisions of Paramount in the coming months.

- The good news is they ain't shutting down, The bads news is... There is a changing of the guard in the Indiewood landscape. Studio's Indie divisions are being either shut down or morphed, and a combo of hiring and firing is now the mainstay. We don't need to list those that have bit the dust since the start of the year, but this week I was perplexed by an unexpected move from an indie-label that had a great year in 2007, at least in terms of critical acclaim. While they aren't throwing in the towel (as wildly speculated), Paramount Vantage is officially changing their course, Paramount made the choice to cut costs by merging the marketing dept's together and now, Amy Israel has been given her walking papers, being replaced by a former New Line exec who chaperoned some prestige specialty films, but genre flicks as well. In the first major shake-up since Paramount brought marketing, distribution and physical production operations for its specialty division Paramount Vantage into the studio, New Line veteran Guy Stodel is replacing Amy Israel as executive vp production and acquisitions.
Vantage, which had been aiming for 10-12 films per year, is scaling back to four to six annual releases, a mix of auteur-driven fare, thriller and horror genre titles and low-budget comedies.
"Guy's expertise fits in perfectly with that vision," Paramount Film Group president John Lesher said. "We want this to continue to be both a prestige label and a profitable one, and we want to be in the Vantage business. Hiring Guy shows our commitment to this (specialty film) space."
In his previous post as New Line senior vp acquisitions and co-production, Stodel handled such genre fare as the two most recent "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" movies along with such films as Michel Gondry's "Be Kind Rewind," Mike Binder's "The Upside of Anger," and Alejandro Amenabar's "The Sea Inside."
"Guy's creative instincts and success at spotting unique and dynamic material makes him a fantastic addition to our team," said Vantage president Nick Meyer, to whom Stodel will report.
Senior vp development and production Geoff Stier is expected to remain on board. While Vantage will retain its development, business and sales operations, staff cuts are anticipated in most departments at both Paramount and Vantage in the coming months.
Vantage's marketing/distribution was taken over by Paramount in June.
Lesher, who had strong ties to talent as a former agent with Endeavor, nurtured low- to midrange-budget, star-driven projects during his time as head of Vantage. But it is unclear how many of those types of projects --which brought prestige to the studio at the expense of high marketing costs --will remain at the retooled Vantage. "Obviously I know a lot of talent," Lesher said. "Since both divisions report to me, why shouldn't the best talent work at both of them?"
Israel, a former Miramax exec, was hired by Lesher in January 2006 shortly after he launched Vantage.
"It's been a great honor to help build Paramount Vantage from the ground up over the past couple of years, overseeing our tremendous production slate from 'No Country for Old Men' and 'There Will Be Blood' to 'Defiance' and acquiring a range of movies from 'An Inconvenient Truth' (to) 'American Teen,' " Israel said.
"Amy has done a wonderful job jump-starting the department and positioning us for the future," Lesher added. "She is a talented executive and producer; her taste and expertise has contributed to many of the successes that Vantage has achieved in our short history. We look forward to working with her on projects in the future."
In a rough spring for specialty divisions, Vantage was absorbed into Paramount proper, after Time Warner folded New Line into Warner Bros. and closed shop at Warner Independent Pictures and Picturehouse.
