Documentary Midnight Oil: 1984 captures the band riding high with their first number one album – but Peter Garrett was on the verge of leaving for politics
It was October 1984 and Peter Garrett, the frontman for Midnight Oil, should have been riding high. The band’s fifth album, Red Sails in the Sunset, had just topped the Australian charts – the band’s first number one.

Cate Blanchett, Peter Garrett, a handful of Salvation Army workers and young people gathered under a marquee tent in Surry Hills this morning. To an outsider's eye, they may have appeared to be a slightly odd mix. Each was there, however, to help launch The Oasis: Homeless Short Film Competition, a national competition asking for high school students to raise awareness about homelessness in our community. The competition is part of an extensive education and outreach program, which aims to tackle the growing incidence of youth homelessness in Australia. The initiative was originally launched in 2008 with the premiere of the AFI award-winning documentary The Oasis on ABC Television.

Instead of Auld Lang Syne this New Year's Eve, let's discuss Old Lame Singers. Or maybe I'll just leave the discussing to you - Lordtopus knows I'm going to need entertainment tonight as I sit home with my kids like I do every New Year's Eve. For you single Pajibans, it's all going to parties, drinking it up, sleeping with random strangers, throwing up and hangovers. For those of us with little twerps (Congratulations Stardust!) it's just drinking and vomit with extra noise. But in the end I'd rather be home celebrating; its safer, cozy and warm and I know the toilet seat is clean.
Here's the list:
5. The Cure/Robert Smith. I love The Cure, but it's totally about the music, because Smith's voice is just shaky, whiny and grating. (Jay is probably shaking his fist right now.) The lyrics are great and dude evokes the emotions, he's got...

Hoping to set a world record for the longest ever song, 168 Australian song writers are penning a single, proceeds from which will go to charity. Assistant Treasurer Nick Sherry and Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts Peter Garrett have released draft legislation for the Pdv/Location offset changes announced in the 2010/11 budget.
The changes – Pdv expenditure reduction from $5m to $500,000, and elimination of the Location Offset’s requirement of 70 percent Australian spend of total production budget for $15-50m projects – apply to productions as of July 1.
Garrett said that the changes “remove barriers to offshore productions considering Australia as a production destination and provide opportunities for our world-class Pdv providers to bid for additional work”.
The changes were welcomed by several industry players, but it has also been pointed out that further modifications – such as an increase of the 15 percent Location Offset – are still necessary.
Other issues will be part of the 2010 Review of the Australian Independent Screen Production Sector, which the Department is expected to present in late 2010.
The consultation materials are available at www.

Sydney -- Foreign productions wishing to shoot in Australia will no longer have to spend a minimum of 70% of their budget here in order to qualify for Australia's 15% locations rebate, while the threshold for productions to receive the post digital and visual effects incentive will be reduced from Aus$5 million ($4.5 million) to $450,000, Australia's arts minister Peter Garrett said Tuesday.
The changes to the incentives scheme were announced as part of the government's annual budget allocations, and will "provide a fresh boost for the Australian film industry", as well as rebuildign the attractiveness of Australia for forign productions, which has dropped
off considerably in recent years, mostly due to the increase in the value of the Australian dollar.

The Location and Post, Digital and Visual Effects (Pdv) rebates have been officially modified to make Australia more competitive to attract international production.
The changes apply from July 1, with the Pdv threshold set at $500,000 (down from $5m). As for the Loction rebate, international productions in the $15-50m range will no longer be required to spend 70 percent of their budget in the country.
The announcement was made as part of the 2010 Federal Budget, and is the result of intense industry lobbying over the loss of competitiveness due to a more expensive Australian dollar and an increase in incentives offered by other countries and Us states. The combination of both factors has seen a considerable number of international features and post-production work lost to other territories.
“Reducing the Pdv threshold to $500 000 will make Australia’s world-class, but smaller, Pdv providers more competitive when bidding for work outsourced by Hollywood studios, increasing...
