The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. Carter‘s costume design), is remarkable. Still, though, the artist and filmmaking talent on show in the MCU is often overlooked purely because they are superhero movies. With that in mind, here are five Oscars categories where the MCU deserves more attention.

Pearl Jam Recruits Climate Change Activist Greta Thunberg for Cautionary ‘Retrograde’ Visual (Watch)
Pearl Jam offers a startling vision for an Earth ravaged by climate change in a new animated video for their song “Retrograde,” directed by Emmy-winning Australian filmmaker Josh Wakely (“Beat Bugs”). The clip, the latest from Pearl Jam’s “Gigaton” album, extends that project’s environmentally conscious themes by featuring teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg as a fortune teller revealing the dire consequences of inaction.
Throughout the video, Thunberg observes giant waves overwhelming such world landmarks as London Bridge, the skyscrapers of Manhattan and even the Space Needle of Pearl Jam’s Seattle hometown. But just as “Retrograde” the song strikes a balance between despair (references to “seven seas rising forever” and a “future fading out”) and determination (“It’s going to take much more than ordinary love to lift us up”), the clip aims to “imagine the future and then try to alter it,” according to Wakely.

IndieWire reached out to the cinematographers whose films are in awards contention and among the most critically acclaimed films of the year to find out which cameras and lenses they used and, more importantly, why these were the right tools to create the visual language of their respective films.
(Films are alphabetical order by title.)
“1917”
Dir: Sam Mendes, DoP: Roger Deakins
Format: Arriraw 4.5K
Camera: Arri Alexa Mini Lf
Lens: Signature Primes 40mm
Deakins: We wanted the “look” of the Alexa Lf with the shallow depth of field the larger sensor brings to the image as well as its higher resolution. We needed the camera to be very small and lightweight so that we could use it on the stabilizing systems necessary for us to make the long and complex camera moves the story demanded. For that reason, the Mini version of the Alexa Lf was key to shooting this project.

Three weeks into its theatrical run, it’s clear that Avengers: Endgame is not just the biggest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date, but one of the biggest films ever released. Having set a ton of records at the box office during its opening weekend, the McU epic has continuously climbed the all time list since then, leading to a question of just how high it can go. That’s the question today…can Avengers: Endgame become the biggest film of all time, at least in terms of box office? Read on to see, but at the very least, the flick is headed for very rarified air. A quick refresher. The film is the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, to date. No spoilers, so I’ll simply say that we pick up after Thanos (Josh Brolin) snapped half of the universe out of existence at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

I have seen the Endgame and it is amazing. This is the best Marvel has ever done. Truly. Avengers: Endgame brings the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a worthy conclusion, eliciting more emotion than any superhero movie yet. I laughed, I cried, and I was filled to the brim with joy. This is a triumph for anyone who has invested a decade and over 20 films worth of material into one giant story. Over three hours long but paced perfectly, you won’t want it to end. Somehow, Marvel, Kevin Feige, and the creative forces have exceeded expectations. Believe the hype, as it’s quite real. It’s the best cinematic release of the year so far. As you all must know by now, the film is the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, to date. No spoilers, so I’ll simply say that we pick up after Thanos (Josh Brolin...

In June of last year, a rumor emerged that the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War sequel would be titled “Avengers: Endgame.” The hearsay largely stemmed from a personal filmography shared by cinematographer Trent Opaloch, which listed this exact title until people caught wind of its inclusion.
But while the rumor managed to get some traction for a short period, the name was ultimately dismissed based on an interview with Uproxx, in which co-director Joe Russo claimed that the official title wouldn’t be taken from any Infinity War dialogue. Of course, six months later, with the release of the film’s first trailer, it was revealed that “Avengers: Endgame” was indeed the name of Marvel’s Phase 3 finale, suggesting that the Russo Brothers hadn’t been entirely honest previously.

Earlier today, a series of New Posters were released for next month’s epic Marvel Cinematic Universe entry Avengers: Endgame. With that recent Trailer likely being it, in terms of new looks at the McU effort, we should probably expect things like this to suffice until the April release date. Pundits like myself have already received our press screening invitations, so it’s basically a waiting game now. A month away, this end to the latest phase of the McU will undoubtedly change everything. As such, it’s an incredible cinematic event, one that pop culture itself will be awaiting. Few movies can create the sort of wave in the zeitgeist that this can. Once again, for those that somehow are not aware (the handful of you somewhere out there in the world), the film is the latest Avengers outing and a direct sequel to Avengers: Infinity War. Yesterday, the very unique publicity campaign for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s end to Phase Three. Yes, we saw a New Trailer for Avengers: Endgame, which has been opting to barely show any footage from the film. Fair warning, the Trailer we’re going to share with you at the bottom of this post only has a tiny bit of new stuff, but it’s enough to make next month seem an age away. The McU is about to change forever with Avengers: Endgame, so this literally will be one of the biggest movies of all time. There’s no going back. The film is just over a month away and fans are officially counting the days. Though the Russo Brothers were quick to refute the ultimately correct rumors earlier this year about the official title of the Avengers: Infinity War sequel, there were enough signs in retrospect that the word “endgame” was on the minds of the team at Marvel Studios that we probably shouldn’t have been so quick to dismiss “Avengers: Endgame” as a candidate.
One recent post from Reddit, for instance, observes how “The End Game” is even the name of a piece on the Infinity War soundtrack. And while this isn’t too out of the ordinary, seeing how “the endgame” is mentioned in a line of dialogue from Doctor Strange, it’s perhaps telling that those words were picked out among all the scene’s dialogue as the ones deemed significant enough to name the accompanying music after.

When the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame finally dropped this morning, not only did this long-awaited moment draw to a close several exhausting weeks of speculation on when and how the footage was most likely to arrive, but it also laid to rest all debate around the film’s official title.
If you’ve been keeping track of the various rumors and discussions around the name of the Avengers: Infinity War sequel, then you’ve probably heard the title “Avengers: Annihilation” being frequently suggested, with the name rising to the top of the heap in recent months as the internet’s favorite candidate. Has there ever been a film that’s as eagerly awaited as Avengers 4? From someone who’s traditionally “DC ’till I Die,” the McU have taken a bunch of B-List heroes (and Spider-Man) and completely converted fans to their cause. So much so, that even the speculation over the name of the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War sequel has people, yours truly included, salivating at the prospect.
Sadly, we might be getting all heated up over nothing in regards to the recent developments that led us to believe that Avengers: End Game will be the official title of the pic. Cinematographer Trent Opaloch updated his CV to include a project by that name and it sent the internet into a tizzy yesterday. Lending weight to the whole thing was that “end game” were Doctor Strange’s last words, just before he turned into Disney Dust.

When Marvel boss Kevin Feige took to the stage to introduce Avengers 4 at CineEurope earlier this month, he referred to the 2019 sequel as simply Avengers: Untitled. Nothing more, nothing less.
Of course, Feige is the first to admit that the hullabaloo surrounding the mystery title has been blown out of proportion – a storm in a teacup, if you will – as it’s really only a matter of time before the studio makes its grand announcement.
But that has in no way curbed online enthusiasm, given there are entire forums and subreddits dedicated to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, in particular, the moniker of Marvel’s next big team-up movie. A number of early contenders have already been crossed off the list entirely, but today, it seems as if the film’s cinematographer, Trent Opaloch, may have accidentally slipped up and revealed the title ahead of schedule.

After toying with the mortality of its ensemble in every single film across its now 10-year franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally reached a point of no return. Another decade’s worth of teases would only further dilute each life-threatening set piece, and so just as the sweet kiss of death will come for us all, it, too, must come for our costume-donning stars. This being a Kevin Feige/Russo brothers production, however, it’s not all grimace-laden battle cries and dour squabbles. Rather, Infinity War, with its now meme-famous descriptor as the “most ambitious crossover event in movie history,” offers ample space to revel in numerous superhero meet-cutes. Shooting character introductions with more bombast than most of the action, this is a blockbuster that knows its audience’s history with these heroes and effectively pulls all the behind-the-scenes strings to orchestrate the most operatic impact.

Neill Blomkamp is full of good ideas. He’s a visionary. With three features now under his belt the South African filmmaker has quickly become one of the most recognized names working in the sci-fi genre. However, Chappie proves, much like his previous minor failure Elysium, that that’s all he’s good for. Ideas are just that without a proper framework to support them, and Chappie is not even close to being a sound structure. In a lot of ways a comparison could be made to George Lucas. Both men have strong concepts and vision but shaky when it comes to fleshing out the ideas. They can deliver to the head of a major studio a solid logline with the possibility of potential. But now with two big budget misfires in a row, the potential and talent we saw in District 9 seems further and further in the past...

iRobot: Blomkamp’s Latest Sentimentally Inclined Sci-Fi is Pleasantly Familiar
Sentient technological constructs and expanding the definition of what constitutes the essence of consciousness as it applies to the essence of humanity is at the core of Neill Blomkamp’s latest feature, Chappie, so named for the eponymous, experimentally self-aware robot at the heart of his narrative. It is almost impossible to discuss the film without acknowledging many of its derivative elements, namely the film’s striking similarity to RoboCop (either version) and the family friendly sentiments of Short Circuit, and because of this, the film’s larger ideas feel too familiar, which undercuts Blomkamp’s ability to truly reach the poignant potential of the material.
There are a handful of emotionally rewarding sequences, but Blomkamp’s attentions are saturated by the film’s innovative protagonist to such a degree that most of the supporting players are reduced to archetypes,...

One of the things that made that first screening of "District 9" such a tremendous surprise at Comic-Con was the way the film had flown almost completely under the radar. I remember seeing the short film he made, and I remember hearing his name mentioned in association with "Halo," but I was still blindsided by just how good "District 9" was. When I reviewed "Elysium," I gave that film every benefit of the doubt. I went back to re-read the review tonight, and I stand by the enthusiasm of it, but not the final rating. When I re-watched the film, I felt it falling apart in front of me, and it was upsetting because I want to believe in this guy. I wrote that review from the perspective of someone who desperately wants Neill Blomkamp to make original science-fiction films that do not rely on existing properties. I have a new desire,...

As part of the Summer of Sony event in Cancun earlier in the year, we got to sit down with writer/director Neil Blomkamp, who was there to promote his new movie Elysium. The new film stars Matt Damon as a man stuck on planet Earth which has been sucked dry of its resources while the super rich live in a space station orbiting the Earth, living the life of luxury with no illness to speak of.
Blomkamp is no stranger to pushing his talents to the limit as his first feature District 9 proved. We chatted with the director about his career as a whole, where he’s come from and where he sees himself going. He also gave us his honest thoughts on the new Star Wars movies.

How much you like or dislike Elysium may depend on just how cynical you are. We live in a world where people are denied medical treatment because they can't afford the very best our doctors can provide. Arguments over Obamacare rage on as a vote has been brought to the House to repeal the health initiative 40 times now, a number that may be out of date only hours after this review posts. At the moment there are no cure-all solutions for cancer and several other diseases, but there is treatment to slow down the effects and perhaps defeat it over time. But, what if a cure-all solution did existc What if a cancer patient could lay down in a bed, be scanned and approximately ten seconds later stand up completely healthyc What if the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing could have been placed in one of these beds and...

While it's unclear whether or not director J.J. Abrams will be returning to the Enterprise for the next installment of the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise, one director is definitely not interested in the job. Neill Blomkamp revealed in a recent interview that he doesn't want to helm the movie because he would have little control over the final product.
"Would I be able to make the 'Star Trek' film I want? Probably not, and therefore I have no desire to make it," Blomkamp told Danish website Filmz.
While the "District 9" and "Elysium" director has the necessary sci-fi and action chops to take on the "Trek" series, Blomkamp is well known for his focus on telling original stories. That was the reason he turned down the opportunity to helm "Star Wars: Episode VII," also citing the fact that there would be too much pressure to live up to existing expectations for the franchise.

In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

To go along with that, Marvel has released the first official image and synopsis for the film, which gives some hints about where the film will go. Apparently, Black Widow has more of a leading role this time around...
Outside of the first Iron Man film, of all Marvel's lead-up movies, I think Captain America was one of the better ones. It wasn't perfect, fell into something of a cookie-cutter plot at times, but it was one of the more enjoyable and entertaining comic book movies. So I'm interested to see what comes next, and how they'll move the Captain into the mordern day following the events of Avengers.

Marvel has released the first official photo from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and announced that the movie has started shooting in Los Angeles! Thy've also released a little plot summary for the film that goes like this...
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will pick-up where Marvel’s The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.
I'm very excited to see that Black Widow is going to play a big role in this story, and not just have a small cameo. This sequel is going to be great. I'm looking forward to seeing how everything turns out!
The movie is set to be released on April 4th, 2014. You can check out the full press release below!

The first official image for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has arrived along with an extensive synopsis, both courtesy of Marvel. The image itself is quite striking and expertly sums up Cap's internal conflict as he fully steps into the modern world. How will he reconcile the shield behind him and the S.H.I.E.L.D. in front of him?
I have to say, this is a great teaser image for the sequel to "Captain America: The First Avenger." If there was one thing fans wanted more of from "Marvel's the Avengers," it was time-displaced Steve coping with the new world around him. This one image pretty much says, "hey, we're dealing with it now." And that's great.

The new short shows off the future of war.
The video shows the members of the Alpha Squadron, members of the U.S. armed forces, going after a war criminal in the near future Eastern Europe (which is in part where Ghost Recon Future Soldier will be set).
Publisher Ubisoft put this short together alongside Little Minx films, which acts a prequel to the upcoming game, featuring the four playable characters from Future Soldier as members of the cast of characters here. The location in the film will be a multiplayer map from the game and if you look carefully, there's a secret weapon unlock code somewhere in the Ghost Recon Alpha's running time.
Here's the synopsis:
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Alpha boasts a line-up of top Hollywood talent. The film was directed by Academy Award winners Hervé de Crécy and François Alaux, who won an Oscar in 2010 for Logorama,...
