WB Games Montréal might be retaining some DNA that made Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy such a delight to experience, but make no mistake – Gotham Knights is a very different interpretation of DC’s iconic franchise. For starters, Bruce Wayne and, by extension, Batman, is nowhere to be seen in this particular tale, having supposedly died previously due to unknown causes.
The responsibility for protecting Gotham’s population from crime, then, is left to four of the Dark Knight’s talented entourage: Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing and Red Hood. The quartet, while all sharing the same goal of protecting innocent lives, do so in very different ways. Fans who have already witnessed WB Games’ initial reveal trailer during DC FanDome back in the summer will be acutely aware of how each vigilante differs from the other in combat, of course, but there is one shared ability that each team member will need...

Revealed alongside Rocksteady’s own new title at last month’s DC FanDome, WB Games Montréal’s Gotham Knights has quickly become one of 2021’s most anticipated releases. Scheduled to arrive on both current and next-gen hardware and sporting a similar aesthetic to the former developer’s beloved Arkham Trilogy, Montréal’s take on the Batman mythology is novel in that it doesn’t feature Batman at all. Not in any playable capacity, at least.
Bruce Wayne is dead and a power vacuum has been left behind in his wake. Intent on restoring order to Gotham City and dishing out justice, four of the Dark Knight’s students – Barbara Gordon, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Tim Drake – have banded together in an attempt to wrestle control of the metropolis back from organized crime and anarchy.
Despite the fact that the quartet all received the same training, however, the developer says Batgirl,...

While it undoubtedly shares a distinctly similar art style with Rocksteady’s beloved Arkham trilogy, Gotham Knights is, in fact, set in its own all-new universe. In this interpretation of the Batman mythos, Bruce Wayne is believed dead and, in his stead, has passed on the mantle of Gotham City’s protector to his four former students. Collectively, Batgirl, Red Hood, Robin and Nightwing must fill the void left behind by the Dark Knight and bring order to a crime-infested metropolis threatening to devolve into anarchy.
It’s a setting and premise, says Gotham Knights creative director Patrick Redding, that simply wouldn’t have been possible had WB Games Montréal attempted to continue or expand on 2015’s Arkham Knight. Addressing the elephant in the room in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Redding said:
The Arkham series is amazing, and it really stands as this amazing opus that people love, and...

Following what’s felt like an age of waiting and speculating, WB Games Montréal has finally pulled back the curtain on its long-awaited Batman game. We now know, of course, that the Caped Crusader will, in fact, be entirely absent from this latest chapter documenting the sordid history of Gotham City, with his strong desire for justice and a brighter future for the metropolis being passed down to a handful of successors.
Robin, Red Hood, Batgirl and Nightwing, all former students of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego, will be playable in Gotham Knights and fans will even be able to team up with a friend to take on the title’s mammoth-sized campaign. While clearly similar to Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy in terms of gameplay and aesthetic, this is an all-new continuity, one where Batman has fallen and crime has won.
While we’ve yet to learn of the exact circumstances surrounding Wayne’s death,...

Gotham Knight‘s debut trailer begins with a stunning sequence in which Bruce Wayne informs his closest allies that he is dead and that it’s now up to them to protect Gotham City. This sequence is actually an extension of the end of Batman: Arkham Knight, which saw Bruce Wayne initiate the Knightfall Protocol, ending his own life.
While Batman’s death at the end of the game seems like an open and shut case, not everyone is convinced the Dark Knight is really gone. And while WB Games has certainly made it look like the Caped Crusader is really gone in Gotham Knights, when you start to look at the evidence, you’ll find that Batman’s death is, at best, debatable.
That being the case, we’re going to look at both sides of this debate in order to help determine whether or not the Dark Knight...
