There was this one time at Comic-Con a few years back when I met Olivia Munn shortly after she left Attack of the Show. When I was introduced to her she told me she didn't associate with "those people" anymore in terms of people involved with the geek culture, and she turned her back on me. Anyway, for a person that doesn't want to associate with "those people" anymore she sure is doing a lot of high-profile geeky kind of movies that are putting her in the geek spotlight. She recently starred in X-Men: Apocalypse, and now it's been announced that she has joined The Predator.
Shane Black is currently writing the film with his Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker. Black will also direct the film, and Munn will join Boyd Holbrook (Narcos), who was previously cast in the lead.
According to THR, Munn will be playing a scientist opposite Holbrook’s special forces commando.

New York Comic-Con is a nonstop four day event with a whirlwind of comic book, film, TV and all other forms of entertainment news. The sheet magnitude of covering or hearing about everything seems daunting, so I’ve put together some of the biggest news bits I found while attending the con. Be sure to keep checking back as any other big news bytes start to pour out. For now see below on some of the biggest stories to come out!
-DC started the week with a bang, announcing the creative teams for the "Kamandi Challenge." To celebrate Jack Kirby's 100th birthday in 2017, they randomly paired a writer and an artist, and are telling a 12 issue story that takes Kamandi (The Last Boy on Earth!) around the globe. Some of the highlights from the announced list of creators are Walt Simonson, Dale Eaglesham and Kevin Eastman!

Star Wars Ph.D.: Every week, Jon Davis will take a look at the new, expanded Star Wars universe and discuss which Star Wars projects are worthy of our attention. As we all know, George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney in 2012. He wanted to move on and, after the prequels, I think a lot of fans wanted him to move on. But George Lucas is a visionary and he deserves lots and lots of credit for trying to do something different with each of the Star Wars movies. Unfortunately, people preferred the swashbuckling, comedy-action tone of the originals, not the plodding politics of the first three episodes. Still, George Lucas wasn't quite done with Star Wars after Revenge of the Sith. He went to create the Clone Wars animated TV series for Cartoon Network. We know he was heavily involved in the beginning and then slowly stepped away.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. I've worked over here at HitFix, covering trailers for about three months, and I've never seen so many trailers in my life. As my beat comes to an end, I thought I'd take one last look at my favorite trailer. Of all the clips, trailers, and featurettes I've seen, my eyeballs never got tired of Arrival. It had everything a good trailer needs. Mystery. Amy Adams. Aliens. Also, there was just enough sense of tone, characters, and story without giving away the whole plot of the movie. Plus, is there any doubt that this guy is going to show up? I'd bet my entire life on it. In fact, I've been looking forward to this and I won't accept it if my expectations aren't met. I need Alf in this movie.

I also like the name Lemony. Lemony! Based on the popular children's book series "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," the show is a second stab at bringing the franchise to life. There was a movie adaptation starring Jim Carrey in 2004. A couple of the creative people who were originally involved in that film but vacated for various production reasons have returned for this. Barry Sonnenfeld was set to direct the 2004 movie and Daniel Handler, the author of the books, wrote the first screenplay. When the studio took the movie a different direction, they left the project. So if you enjoyed the 2004 movie, you have other people to thank. But now the original adapters have returned for this series,...

DC Comics has just made the announcement that Jim Lee's WildStorm Universe is returning, with Warren Ellis plotting the overarching direction of the new line. Ellis will write the main title of the imprint and oversee general plot threads on spin-off titles. The flagship title, called The Wild Storm will debut this February, written by Ellis and drawn by Jon Davis-Hunt. Ellis tells Comicbook.com, "After long reflection, I couldn't turn down the invitation to renovate the house that Jim Lee built, and refit its unique combination of cosmic paranoia and paramilitary conspiracy for the post-political space madness of the twenty-teens. Looking back to look forward." In addition to The WildStorm, other titles in the works include Michael Cray, WildC.A.T.S. and Zealot. The creative teams for these titles have not been announced at this time. You can check out a few art samples/character studies from Davis-Hunt below.

You know The Young Pope is cool because this Pope smokes cigarettes, prays at the bottom of a pool, and doesn't take crap from anyone. Anyone! Plus, he's American, so he's speaking English up in the Vatican, y'all. When The College of Cardinals had their Pope choosing ceremony, they wanted something different this time; they wanted a cool cat like Jude Law. (And it wasn't black smoking rising out of the Sistine Chapel this time.. ahem.) I can get behind this Pope. If you're with him, you know you're rolling deep with the best party people. He's gonna set you up with primo bottle service, play some Montell Jordan's' "This is How We Do It," and you and your friends will twerk all night long.

Let me tell you something, one of my jobs here at Hitfix is (was) to watch trailers. I've seen a bunch of comedy trailers the last couple of months. They all have Kumail Nanjiani in them. I'm serious. All of them. Fist Fight. Brother Nature. The Late Bloomer. Flock of Dudes. The Dude-Bro Crusade. I made up that last one. I love Kumail. He's the master of deadpan as Dinesh in the great Silicon Valley HBO series and all around funny person. He kills it in just about everything he's in. He's often on the podcast Harmontown (featuring Community auteur Dan Harmon), he's got an active Twitter account, he's in that Nerdist scene with Chris Hardwick. It's time just to give him his own movie. He's like Nikki Minaj.

I know that I just used the word "should" in the title of this article. Never say the word "should." It's an inherent judgment on yourself. Let's, for argument sakes, say that you see this Dead Men Tell No Tales teaser and you think: Okay, this looks interesting. I mean, Johnny Depp isn't in the trailer, but I know he's in this movie. He's got to be. I don't know why this installment is called Dead Men Tell No Tales when the third movie was called Dead Man's Chest, but if you put movies together on your shelf in alphabetical order, these two movies shall never part for the rest of their lives, unless Disney releases a movie called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Martian Cries.

If you haven't, stop what you're doing and see the movie Reds, featuring some of the most beautiful cinematography you'll ever see by Vittorio Storaro. Also, while we're here and still talking, Heaven Can Wait is one of the best comedies ever made. Warren Beatty was a big creative force behind that one, too. Rules Don't Apply? I mean, it doesn't seem that edgy to me, but what do I know? It takes place in the 1950s, which makes sense because the last time Warren Beatty did something super contemporary he was rapping in the movie Bulworth, and that still gives me night sweats. If you are open to The True Memoirs of an International Assassin changing your life, it's certainly possible. Don't just watch it. Breathe it in. Most people who watch this movie are tired from a long day and will turn on Netflix in hopes of seeing something mindless while drifting off to sleep. And this movie will appear on your screen and you will say "Ah hah! This looks like something I can watch while dying inside." But does it have to be? Sure, the movie looks both formulaic and dated before it's even arrived on our illustrious laptops. In recent years, the world behind Scientology has been ripped open. The most notable expose, Going Clear by Lawrence Wright, was adapted into a documentary on HBO. Sam Neill and Julian Dennison are a winning twosome in this promo and in the movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople, a particularly fun adventure comedy that's been making waves. The New Zealand movie had the highest weekend opening in New Zealand while racking up attention from critics for its offbeat humor and compelling characters. But that was all about to change (or begin to change) when women leveraged their talent for better working conditions. Good Girls Revolt is a period piece, and much like it's predecessor, Mad Men, it's about the changes that happened in the workplace during a tumultuous time in American history. I think it would be cool, later on in the series, if there were a crossover with Donald Draper - who we last left in 1970 with a triumphant Coke commercial. There's also crossover potential with the movie Heartburn, in which Meryl Streep places a woman based on Nora Ephron (Nora Ephron wrote the book and the screenplay). Lost Stars is designated as Young Adult novel but don't let that put you off. First, there's nothing wrong with Young Adult. In fact, it's a label publishers give to any book starring characters younger than 27. If Catcher in the Rye came out today, it would be labeled Young Adult. I love movies like this because they are such great examples of idea that seems small can really be quite big. Moreover, and this is not sarcasm: this is screenwriting 101. The protagonist has a clear physical goal. His sneakers were stolen and he wants them back. He also has a clear thematic goal. He wants respect. Kicks makes creating a solid hook look easy. Don't believe it! Crafting a story that appears to be simple is one of the hardest parts of screenwriting. I also love the touches of the surreal in this urban setting. The recurring motif of the astronaut, representing the lead's need for escape but evolving into a kind of spirit animal; it adds a dash of whimsy to a story that has some violent elements.

It owes a lot to Rear Window, the classic Hitchcock movie about a man who is stuck at home and ends up spying on his neighbors for entertainment, only to discover one of them might be a murderer. Ordinary World shows us an alternate world where Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day isn't famous. He's just an ordinary guy working an ordinary job with an ordinary family. I'd hazard to guess that the lesson of this movie is there's no such thing as an "ordinary life." Billie Joe Armstrong plays a man who dreams of being Billie Joe Armstrong. He's turning 40 but no one in his family has remembered, so his friends throw him a hotel party. At first, I didn't immediately recognize the lead singer of Green Day. I didn't know who the actor was and wondered why they'd choose this guy for the role. As for the story, I don't have a great idea of what the movie is about. We start with Amy Adams, who has a really nice house with bay windows. But beautiful homes don't mean much if you can't sleep well in them. She's an insomniac, and she tells a colleague that her ex husband (Jake Gyllenhaal) used to call her a "nocturnal animal," which, okay, not common vernacular. So it makes sense he's a writer. In Miss Sloane, lobbyist Jessica Chastain attempts to pass a law on gun control. Putting aside our personal politics, this is a challenging proposition. It's as difficult if not more difficult than usurping the Presidency while serving as a Senator. (Don't forget that Frank Underwood had the advantage of dealing with a weak President who had a bizarre weakness for antique typewriters.) That's according to Guinness. And it's been rebooted many, many times. This one looks fun. We had our own American reboot directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) and how we have a new version from Toho Studios, the folks behind the original Japanese Godzilla. They've made bucket loads of Godzilla movies, so they know their Godzilla. It's an interesting choice for the trailer to focus mainly on bureaucrats, nuclear scientists and panicking crowds. I like monster movies where we tease the look of the monster before we see it. But in this case, we know what Godzilla looks like. And it's too bad, because Godzilla looks great here. It would have been better to see more of him or her...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. It's 1978. Two groups meet in a warehouse for a highly illegal exchange of weapons for cash. It goes south and the gangs shoot at each other for 90 minutes of pulse pounding action and pithy dialogue. What's not to like? Whether the movie is good or not - and it looks good - this is one artfully designed trailer. It's the cinema of cool, with great costume choices (I love Brie Larson's look in this movie), peppery line readings, and uptempo 70s music. Also, don't forget the sounds of cartridges being loaded into chambers. Or something like that. I don't know how guns work, but who cares when you have well choreographed fictional gun play. It's escapist fun if it's done with the right balance of tension and flair for the ridiculous.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. There's been a couple great documentaries about musicians from our North American continent not finding success here in America or Canada but generating a huge following in other places. Searching for Sugar Man and Anvil! The Story of Anvil are my two favorites. It's an interesting phenomenon. Think of the band Cheap Trick, who did okay in the U.S but were huge in Japan. In fact, "But they're huge in Japan.." has become a rock cliche. But what about a Japanese band that's so good, it's not unreasonable to wonder why they aren't huge everywhere else? That's the subject of We Are X. It appears the main visionary behind the band is the drummer Yoshiki, who is willing to push himself to the brink for his music. There...

Mel Gibson is back making historical action films, and I can’t pretend I don’t want to see Hacksaw Ridge. Over the last couple years, I’ve had more than a few friends working on projects saying to me, “How would you feel if Mel Gibson was in it?” Why are they asking me? I mean, besides my obvious casting expertise? I’m Jewish, so they want to gauge my reaction. I point them towards South Park quote “Say what you will about Mel, but the son of a b-tch knows story.” A few years ago when people said Mel Gibson’s career was over, I was skeptical. That’s not the way it works. Hollywood can’t resist hiring a well known actor and director with a proven track record of success.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. In Collateral Beauty, Will Smith’s co-workers are really supportive. Really, really supportive. I know what happened to his character is a tragedy, but man, they are really up in his business. Ed Norton is stalking him in the elevator bank just to see if Will Smith will talk to him. Poor Ed Norton appears to be hurting just as much as Will Smith. These are just co-worker but they have lunch meetings to discuss how they can be better friends to Will Smith while also going through his mail. Do we want friends like these? The enthusiasm is great but the invasion of privacy? Not so much. I think they could take it down a couple notches. I really do. Like many an ad man, Will Smith’s...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. The Goat trailer looks so meaningless and derivative, I thought I had to be missing something. I searched the Interwebs to find out more, and yes, it turns out this film's intent is complexity. You wouldn't necessarily know it from the trailer but Goat is a drama. A drama that explores how hard it is to be a douche-bro. Just like the movie, I sound like I'm trying to be funny but I'm serious. It is hard to be a douche-bro. It's a lot of pent up hostility, man. Exploring male anger can be an interesting subject. I mean it is to me. Maybe because I'm a man, I don't know. (I also like Sour Patch Kids.) Anger is just a protection against hurt and sadness. It's a masking...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. There is a lot going on in this WW2 movie. Is USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage about delivering parts of the atomic bomb to an island near Japan ? Is it about the Navy stranded in the ocean for five days? Is it about some other random romance set back home? Is it about a court martial after these events? Is it about Tom Sizemore scaring people? USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage is as busy as its title. Here's a picture of Nicolas Cage as a giant man wearing a Naval hat, pushing his head into the clouds while planes ready their attack from behind. The trailer spends 40 seconds on USS Indianapolis mission to deliver nuclear weapon but its subsequent torpedoing wasn't part of that mission, so it can't be essential to the story.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. Prior to Kickboxer: Vengeance, there have been five Kickboxer movies. After Jean Claude Van Damme relinquished the titular role in the first Kickboxer, Sasha Mitchell took over the lead role for three movies. Mark Dascasos starred in Kickboxer 5: The Redemption in 1995. And that is the last movie in this Kickboxer universe. In 1989, the year the first Kickboxer came out, Lloyd Dobbler (Say Anything...) told Diane's dad that kickboxing was "the sport of the future." He was right. It's 2016, and mixed martial arts are more popular than they've ever been. And now we have a full-on Kickboxer reboot in Kickboxer: Vengeance. The movie looks fun. I expect to hear inspirational music and see lots of kicking. That's all I want out of a movie about kickboxing. If there's more than that,...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. If bad guys were chasing you and you were saved by a superhero named Max Steel, would you be okay with it? I would. I'd be thankful to be alive. But after the gratitude wore off, I'd be bummed that it wasn't Spider-Man, Superman, or Batman. In terms of popularity, Max Steel is strictly C-list. If he and Luke Cage were to go to clubbing together, Luke Cage would be waved in, while Max Steel would be stuck behind the velvet rope. But superheroes aren't in it for the fame, they're in it for the justice. And as far as Max Steel's concerned, he could have it much worse. He's lucky. He's not disfigured like Fantastic Four's Thing. (Or other granite-based heroes like Concrete and Badrock, and no,...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. Christopher Guest, the man behind Waiting for Guffman and Spinal Tap!, has returned with Mascots and I couldn't be more excited. This time he's utilizing his 'mockumentary' style to explore the world of sports mascots. It's Best in Show, but with animals that aren't real. What I like about Christopher Guest is that he doesn't write jokes, per se. He writes characters who are extreme. And those characters say funny things. It's a subtle difference but an important one. None of the character in a Christopher Guest movie know they are being funny. They aren't saying things to make an unseen audience laugh. As much as I enjoy shows like 30 Rock or Family Guy, which are engines for a stream of gags, I love the purity of Guest's comedy.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. In the Shut In trailer, Naomi Watts must take care of her brain damaged teenage son - played by Stranger Things' own Charlie Heaton! - after an accident. She's not happy about it, complaining he's not her son anymore, just a body. A body that plays Jonathan on a extremely successful zeitgeist show on Netflix! Luckily, Naomi Watt is a children's clinical psychologist so when an orphaned boy comes to visit, she decides to take him so she can feel like she has a real son again. Unfortunately, that child runs away during a storm and dies of "the cold temperature." She had one job. Her friend Oliver Platt tells her not to be a hard on herself. It's true that you have to let things go, but overall,...

But according to Ted Danson in The Good Place, "Every religion guessed about five percent." They got the afterlife mostly wrong (except for Calgary's own Doug Forcett, who "got high on mushrooms one night and guessed about 92 percent"). This show has created its own rules for the land of the no-longer-living. It's inventive and fun. We learn that Kristen Bell is in the wrong place. Due to a red tape mixup, the powers that be have mistaken her for a lawyer who has saved innocent lives. She was really just a mediocre person when she was alive. Although the audience will probably like her more than the obnoxious goody goody types that populate this good place. I'm sure...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. What would it take for a woman to become a Major League player? What I enjoyed about this Pitch trailer is its all presented in a realistic way. Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury) doesn't have magical powers like move Rookie of the Year, in which a kid gets in an accident and is blessed with a strong arm that lands him a job with the Cubs. Ginny's father breaks it down when she's a young girl. She might be a great pitcher but biologically speaking, she's not going to have a fastball that will work in the Mlb. So she's going to need a "secret weapon:" the screwball. A screwball is a pitch designed to break in the opposite direction of a curveball or curveball. Which means that a batter's eyes will get tricked,...

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. "There are times when we make history, and there are times when history makes us." These are the awful last words of the U.S. President giving his State of the Union Address in Designated Survivor. It's quite a hacky speech, I gotta tell ya. And then -- Kaboom! Capitol Hill is destroyed. And one man is left standing. Kiefer Sutherland, a low-level cabinet member assigned to not be on Capitol Hill in case of this very occasion. Now he must assume the mantle of the Presidency! And immediately, people are worried about it? Him? It's like they've never seen a middle-aged white man become President before. Why not him? We learn that he was fired the morning before this whole thing went down. Was he fired for writing the President's speech?...

This show is created by the Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield) so it comes with a strong pedigree. An evil man (or is he?) played by Goran Visnjic travels back through American history in order to alter some important events. As we know from Back to the Future theory that changing history ruins the entire time-space continuum. We can't have that, so our three heroes (or are they?) have to prevent Goran Visnjic from preventing things from happening such as the Hindenburg disaster. My favorite part of this trailer is the engineer initially refusing to join the team because, "I am black. There is literally no place in American history that will be awesome for me.

Lawyer shows are about winning the big case. And dramedies are all about... making us cry. That's not a judgment. Perhaps a better way to put it, shows like Parenthood and the upcoming This is Us, which tells the stories of people all born on the same day, are about making us feel something other than disgust. This trailer is a hit, which bodes well for NBC. It has more than 51 million views on Facebook alone. Perhaps that's because it's a refreshing breath of fresh air. It may be the Golden Age of Television on streaming and cable, but on the networks, we're up to our neck in procedurals, reality TV, and superhero shows. A multi-generation...
