Bob Iger likely wishes 2023 looked a lot more like 2019.
In a document dump this week for the recently class-action-certified pay-equity suits against Disney, the Mouse House CEO’s 2019 corporate self-evaluation was among the papers placed in the Los Angeles Superior Court’s docket.
“In 2019, Disney was awarded an A+ as one of ‘America’s Most Trustworthy Public Companies’ and was #1 in a ‘Brand Intimacy Study’ recognizing the power in building bonds with consumers,” reads the bullet-point evaluation Iger wrote four years ago to the Disney board. “The company was also named one of the ‘World’s Most Admired Companies’ by Fortune and one of the world’s ‘Most Reputable Companies’ by Forbes. Fast Company ranked Disney as the #1 ‘Most Innovative Company’ in Media.”
Those accolades were added to by Iger himself, who also noted: “In fiscal 2019, we prepared for the historical launch of Disney+. We successfully executed a highly-anticipated Investor...

Thousands and thousands of past and present female Disney employees can sue the Mouse House for paying them less than men.
More than four years after Walt Disney Studios staffers Laronda Rasmussen and Karen Moore filed a lawsuit claiming gender-based pay disparity, a Los Angeles judge Friday has agreed the matter can become a class-action suit.
Looking at a potential payout in the hundreds of millions, that means almost 10,000 women can join the legal action. At this rate, a trial could kick off in October 2024.
“Disney is 100 years old this week,” plaintiffs’ lawyer Lori Andrus told Deadline after Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elihu M. Berle cast aside the company’s organizational-based objections to certification in a long anticipated hearing Friday. “It is time [for Disney] to grow up and take responsibility for their actions.”
As a point of law, the plaintiffs allege that Disney has violated the Fair Employment & Housing Act...

Exclusive: Fireworks might be about to go off at the Walt Disney Company this Fourth of July weekend, at least legally.
More than four years after Walt Disney Studios staffers Laronda Rasmussen and Karen Moore first filed a complaint accusing the Mouse House of discriminating against female workers by paying them less than men, attorneys for the duo and other women are today asking a California judge to allow them to turn the matter into a class-action suit.
In a widely redacted filing on the potentially sprawling matter (read it here), plaintiffs’ attorney Lori Andrus and Joseph M. Sellers and Christine E. Webber of D.C.-based Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll figuratively seek to make up for lost time by cut straight to the chase:
Disney systematically pays women in California less than men. This pay disparity is not based on legitimate factors, it is based on sex, with a...

The Andy Griffith Show focused almost entirely on Andy Taylor’s interactions with the residents of the town of Mayberry. Still, the writers left a little room for romance. Over the show’s 249 episodes, Andy did a fair bit of dating, including the appearance of a few steady girlfriends and a handful of one-off dates. Eventually, Andy decided to settle down with his long-term girlfriend, Helen Crump. Do you remember everyone Andy Taylor dated?
Andy Taylor’s season 1 girlfriend, Ellie Walker, disappeared without explanation
In season 1 of The Andy Griffith Show, Andy Taylor romanced Ellie Walker. Ellie moved to Mayberry to work in her uncle’s pharmacy and quickly integrated herself into the community, but not always into the good graces of the townsfolk. The couple got together relatively early in the show’s first season and became girlfriend and boyfriend.
I love this Christmas picture of Andy, Barney, and Ellie.

The conversation on Tuesday between Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Radhika Jones and Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger and filmmaker Jon Favreau was largely about the upcoming Disney+ streaming series Star Wars: The Mandalorian. But toward the end of their chat, Jones put the media conglom boss in the hot seat over his $66 million compensation last year, as well as his thoughts on a wealth tax that’s being pitched by Democratic presidential candidates.
“We’re in the middle of a really robust political conversation about excessive wealth, and the idea it’s corrosive to democracy, and wondered what you thought about that and if specifically if either of you would support a wealth tax, of the kind that is being proposed by some of the Democratic candidates,” Jones asked.
“Jon, you wanna take that?” Iger joked turning to Favreau, which got an uproar from the audience at the Wallis Performing Arts Center in Beverly Hills.

Ten women across the Walt Disney Company claim that the Bob Iger-run media giant doesn’t pay women fairly and are challenging the House of Mouse in court in a proposed class action first launched this spring. However, while fine with fighting a ton of individual actions, Disney are now declaring that the potentially massive discrimination suit is just too unwieldy for the Burbank based conglomerate to handle, seriously.
“The Walt Disney Company described in Plaintiffs’ Complaint is not The Walt Disney Company that exists in fact and law,” declares Disney in a memorandum accompanying their October 18 move to kneecap the class action (read it here). “The Disney Companies categorically deny that they pay any female employee less than her similarly situated male coworkers and will vigorously defend themselves against each Plaintiff’s individual claims,” the L.A. Superior Court document adds dismissively, literally and figuratively. “But that is...

While "Star Trek" is now a huge, beloved franchise, recently reinvigorated by J.J. Abrams' reboot (and, fingers crossed, next year's sequel to that film), it wasn't always like that. The original 1960s series had low ratings, and only lasted three seasons, and while success in syndication let to a film version being greenlit in the aftermath of "Star Wars," that film, 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," proved hugely expensive, and less profitable than Paramount had hoped.
Instead, it was the second film, 1982's "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan," that really cemented its place in pop culture. Made for a quarter of the budget of the original, it won rave reviews, thanks to a faster pace and less reverent approach from non-Trekker director Nicholas Meyer, and earned the all-time biggest opening weekend up to that point, and is still held up as a high watermark for the franchise.

Mommy Loves Me book
Bedtime doesn’t have to be a total snoozer. Author Karen Moore’s Mommy Loves Me ($7) and Daddy Loves Me ($7) board books are sweet options for that last book of the day. The crisp, colorful illustrations by Mandy Stanley will leave kids smiling on their way to dreamland.
Plus, the book promotes equal-parenting. My favorite passage is “Mommy even loves me when she has to go away to go to work or shop for us and Daddy’s there to play.” It’s nice that the author acknowledges that not every mommy bear is wearing an...
