As the old saying goes, you can make it fast, you can make it cheap, and you can make it good, but you can’t have all three. In the case of STXfilms and Alibaba’s UglyDolls, it was the first two points making for a disastrous start at the box office of $8.5M for this reported $45M-$53M net production, intended to launch the mini-major’s foray into the feature animation space.
Based on this weekend’s box office results, it’s clear that the doll line isn’t as universal as originally perceived by Stx. Stx eventually got ahold of UglyDolls and believed that the property would resonate over in China. While the pic has yet to lock down a release date there, box office history for family pics in China is against UglyDolls: family fare under-indexes there, with even Pixar films challenged.

Summer break is fast approaching so it must be time for another toy “tie-in” feature animated flick. Well, to be honest, the “break’ thing shouldn’t matter since this subject’s “core” audience is probably “pre-pre-k” (guess that’s a thing). Early this year we saw the follow-up to the surprise hit The Lego Movie from 2014. So, how about another “property” that’s a tad more cuddly than those hard interlocking plastic blocks. We’re a few months away from the fourth visit with Woody, Buzz, and their pals so maybe this is a “softer warm-up” showcasing a toy line that’s been around since 2001 (that long…I am so out of it). And, going by the brand name, we may be in for a lesson or two with the big screen debut of Uglydolls.

For a disposable piece of children’s entertainment that features Pit Bull as the voice of a one-eyed, party-mad puppy named Ugly Dog, there’s something refreshingly straightforward about how “UglyDolls” goes about its agenda. At no point in its mercifully brief running time does this colorful pop confection pretend that it’s anything more than an 88-minute commercial for an innocuous brand of plush toys, and for that we should be grateful. Sure, it’s not as psychedelic as “Trolls,” nor as impressive a monument to the mediocrity of late capitalism as “The Angry Birds Movie,” but at a time when the typical animated movie spends $100 million trying to exhaust its young audience into submission, it’s kinda nice to see one that costs half that much, and tries half as hard.

Robert Simonds’ aspiring studio, still more than two months away from releasing its first film, has made another grand move and launched a family and animation division.
The new unit will be geared towards multi-media, multi-platform family franchises and to this end Stx Entertainment has signed a deal with Pretty Ugly and its toy brand Uglydoll.
Stx anticipates a full-scale animated feature based on the toy and will produce alongside co-producers Gigi Pritzker – an investor in Stx – and OddLot.
David Horvath, who co-created Uglydoll with Sun-Min Kim and Pretty Ugly managing partner Drew Matilsky back in 2001, will serve as executive producers.
Stx Entertainment chairman of the motion picture group Adam Fogelson and Matilsky announced the deal on Thursday and said they planned to explore future projects together.

The origin story of the Uglydoll brand, a line of cute yet odd-looking creations that were quite literally born out of love, is about as romantic as the story from The Notebook. David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim are not just the co-creators of the line, but also a happily married couple, and the idea for the dolls was inspired by a drawing David whipped up in a letter he sent to his then-girlfriend, who at the time was living far away from him. To make a long story short, Sun-Min Kim ended up sewing together the very first proto-uglydoll, bringing David’s drawing to life as a surprise gift. With that bit of handcrafted collaboration and inspiration, the Uglydoll brand was born in 2001. Now, over a decade later, the brand is stronger and more successful than ever; that original Diy doll has spawned hundreds of adorable little friends, oodles of...

Hollywood studios have long realized the potential for making money with animated films, and we seem to be in a transitional period with DreamWorks Animation moving from Paramount to 20th Century Fox, Paramount building their own animation unit, and Warner Bros. just starting up a new creative think tank for properties of its own. Illumination Entertainment has already made quite a splash in the industry, teaming with Universal Pictures for Despicable Me, The Lorax, and more. Now they'll add Uglydoll to their growing slate of projects, hoping to capitalize on the pre-existing fandom with a more digital approach. A press release says that Illumination Entertainment founder Chris Meledandri will produce Uglydoll, written by Larry Stuckey (Little Fockers) and based on the successful property created by husband and wife team David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim. It began as a plush doll of a character Horvath created in 2001, and soon sprang into...

For all that is lovable and plush, genius minds at Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment were at work when they decided to join forced to develop the Uglydoll franchise into an animated film. Uglydolls are the brainchild of husband and wife team, David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim, who were former toymakers who broke from industry to make their own line of unique, misshapen, and asymmetrical plush dolls. It was their odd appearance, soft materials, flawless construction, and bright colors that set them apart from other plush toys.
Helped by the advertising and coverage in print magazines such as Giant Robot and Giant Robot Stores, the plush dolls built a cult following and grew by going into direct market and specialty stores. Horvath and Kim’s story is well-documented and Uglydoll penetrated the toy market, leading to knock-offs and sad imitations. Despite all the copycats, Uglydoll remained unchained, and distributed to hand-picked specialty stores,...

If you've been to a small, independent toy store in the past decade or so, you probably recognize Uglydolls. Created by husband and wife team David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim, the expertly crafted, yet incredibly simple plush dolls are extremely popular because of their unique design and individual character backstories. They're both collectible and accessible to all ages. And while Horvath and Kim have kept the property rights relatively limited - only extending into other retail venues like games, toys, apparel, etc - they've now sold the rights to have their creations made into a feature film. Illumination Entertainment, the company behind Despicable Me and Hop, have nabbed the rights to Uglydoll with an eye on making it a full-length, animated movie. Larry Stuckey (Little Fockers) will write the script. Read more after the jump. Deadline broke the news [1] of the deal. Here's what the head of Illumination, Chris Meledandri,...

Univeral Pictures and Illumination Entertainment is developing a feature film based on the Uglydoll toys created by husband and wife artists David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim. Deadline reports that the studio that brought us Hop and Despicable Me has purchased the rights to the franchise and plans to "branch into a wider range of media opportunities."
Here is what Illumination chief Chris Meledandri had to say about the project:
"I remember the immediate appeal and connection that the characters had for me. They are simple in design, expressive in personality, and once I got to know David and Sun-Min, I learned there was a mythology and a world behind this. The personality and level of wit reminded me of the illustrated work I saw from Matt Groening before he did The Simpsons. The characters have a cult following, and they've been very restrictive in where and how they've sold them.

I don't have any kids, but I do live in the heavily kid-populated Brooklyn neighborhood of Park Slope, which means I have a vague awareness of things like Silly Bandz and that Bieber kid. I've also heard, vaguely, of things called Uglydolls, which are pretty much exactly what the title promises-- brightly colored, weirdly stitched felt dolls who kind of look like stuffed cartoon characters. The dolls are apparently wildly popular, and even more important, the creators David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim have come up with a back story and mythology for them. I bet you can guess what happens next! Indeed, Deadline is reporting that Illumination Entertainment, the animation outfit based at Universal that gave us Despicable Me and Hop, has picked up the rights to the Uglydoll franchise, with plans to develop a feature film and maybe "a wider range of media opportunities" after that. Illumination chief Chris...
