His Dark Materials and Help writer Jack Thorne has been recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Writing at tonight’s 29th Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards (WGGBAs), with Russell T Davies, Emerald Fennell and Armando Iannucci also taking home gongs.
The prolific Thorne, who delivered this year’s Edinburgh Television Festival MacTaggart lecture, was presented with the prestigious trophy by His Dark Materials exec and Bad Wolf Co-Founder Jane Tranter, following a two-decades-long career in which he has penned some of the UK’s most critically-acclaimed hits including This is England, Shameless and The Virtues.
“I think all writers would say that being given something from other writers is the greatest honor,” said Thorne. “I don’t think I’ve really contributed anything much in this strange career, and writing is a really strange job, but I’m grateful, and slightly anxious, to now have this award to live up to.

Fringe, Supernatural, Bob's Burgers... zombies pop up in all kinds of surprising places. Remember that time Ramsay Street was invaded?
Back in the 80s and 90s, the only groups regularly enjoying zombie movies were habitually stoned students, young lads looking to prove their mettle by lobbing VHS grenades of gore at each other's minds, and great sweating giants with mutton-chops corseted into two-sizes-too-small Iron Maiden T-shirts. Very few couples partook of the genre; liver-ripping and eye-gouging was rarely seen as the essential romantic complement to an evening entwined on the couch.
Aside from George A Romero’s satirical side-swipes at society, the majority of zombie movies were gloriously nasty, schlocky yuck-fests, with names like ‘Return Of The Great Zombie Intenstine Carnival III’, 'Zombies! Zombies, Oh, Christ Zombies, They're Eating My Eyes!' and ‘I Claw-hammered My Zombie Grandma’S Head Off’. Anyone with access to a video camera,...

Shooting has just started on Nick Hamm's Irish political dramedy The Journey, and with that comes the first still. Have a look at Timothy Spall playing Protestant loyalist firebrand the Reverend Dr Ian Paisley, and Colm Meaney as the republican Sinn Féin politician Martin McGuinness. The film focuses on the time during the Northern Ireland Peace Process when - unthinkable in previous years - the two sworn enemies put their past actions behind them and begin to forge a friendship that allowed them to move forward. The drama takes place over a short trip the pair made together, by the end of which they were both changed - the journey of the title referring to more than just miles. Some wags even began referring to them as The Chuckle Brothers. Also in the cast are Toby Stephens as Prime Minister Tony Blair; Freddie Highmore as Jack, the young government...

Josh Widdicombe's BBC sitcom pilot proved funny enough to be granted a full series.
The popular stand-up comic will lead the cast of Josh, following a successful Comedy Feed pilot online in 2014. The six-part series will air on BBC Three in November.
Co-written by Widdicombe and Tom Craine, it will be directed by frequent Steve Coogan collaborator David Schneider, and also stars Beattie Edmondson, Ellis James and Jack Dee.
Centred around grumpy and single Josh and his two flatmates Kate and Owen, his life is plagued with crappy situations such as a rubbish pool party and being played by his high school crush.
Jack Dee plays their bizarre landlord who inserts himself into their lives as much as possible, whether they want him there or not.
There will also be a host of celebrity cameos throughout the series, including Jennifer Saunders, Romesh Ranganathan, James Acaster and... The Chuckle Brothers!

Happy birthday, Cbbc! 30-years-old and still going strong, judging by this nostalgia-powered clip starring the likes of Edd the Duck and Gordon the Gopher.
Confronted with three decades' worth of the finest children's entertainment, it was a hard task to corral the Digital Spy team into picking the very best - or at least their favourite - Cbbc programmes.
So here are our picks, from ChuckleVision to Byker Grove and back again, which means you'll have to let us know yours in the comment box below.
1. The Animals of Farthing Wood (1992-1995)
This animated adaptation of Colin Dann's novel was so good it could have been on at any time of day instead of part of the Cbbc lineup.
It was gripping, heartbreaking and funny, and you found yourself getting perhaps too-attached to the likes of Fox, Badger, Toad and Mole (a tear may have been shed on several occasions). Though,...

In early July, the news arrived that Timothy Spall was in talks to play late politician Sir Ian Paisley in The Journey. It appears he’s gone against Paisley’s traditional “no” stance and said yes to the part, and now Colm Meaney has joined the drama as Paisley’s stalwart enemy-turned-true friend Martin McGuinness. Nick Hamm’s film chronicles the story of how two seemingly implacable enemies – Paisley, the fiery, vocal leader of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Fein’s McGuinness – had to find common ground and make history. The pair became such good friends that they were nicknamed The Chuckle Brothers.Director Nick Hamm is writing the script with Divorcing Jack’s Colin Bateman and aims to kick off filming in Northern Ireland and Scotland in the middle of next month.Meaney, who has been spending most of his time recently in Western-flavoured Us TV drama Hell On Wheels,...

A host of celebrities will be battling it out to be crowned National Treasure 2015 at this year's Comic Relief.
For the skit, Stephen Fry, Miranda Hart and Sheridan Smith will judge which celebrity has done enough to claim the title.
Russell Brand, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and David Gandy are all competing for the crown.
Also up for the National Treasure title is Katie Price, David Walliams, Robbie Williams and The Chuckle Brothers.
David Walliams said: "To make a good Comic Relief sketch you need something special, you need big guest stars and something you can only see on that one day of the year - Red Nose Day. For me, this is hopefully all of those things.
"I'm really excited about this year's Red Nose Day campaign because it's a real bumper year for comedy, and the whole reason that I loved Comic Relief at school and beyond was because I loved comedy.

The Sun newspaper reports today that troubled comedian Michael Barrymore has cancelled plans to re-launch his career just days after being rushed to hospital when it was feared he was suicidal.
Yesterday, Dougie Chapman – who booked Barrymore to appear at Blackpool’s famous North Pier – said that booking the comic was, “always a gamble.”
Barrymore will apparently be replaced in the billing by The Chuckle Brothers.
Chapman told the paper, “I had every faith the public would take him back to their hearts…
“I know he was all geared up for the shows and was preparing new material.
“But he has cancelled all work for the summer.”
Barrymore’s career nosedived after a guest at a party in his home was found dead in Barrymore’s swimming pool.
Michael was cleared of any wrong doing in the death of Stuart Lubbock, but the incident has dogged both his personal and professional life ever since.

This country has produced plenty of great double acts down the years - Morecambe & Wise, Little & Large, Ant & Dec, The Chuckle Brothers - but why do we always stop at the number two? If two heads are better than one, then surely three are wiser than two. If any proof was needed, look no further than legendary pop songwriters and children's entertainers Rod, Jane & Freddy. They made their name on the camp and surreal ITV hit Rainbow before going it alone with their own self-titled series and stage show that toured the UK to much acclaim. Of course, what truly makes Rod, Jane & Freddy special is not just their TV talents, but also the mystery that remains around their unusual triangular relationship.
