Sarah Paulson confirmed just how far back her friendship with Pedro Pascal goes.
The Emmy winner revealed that after meeting Pascal when he was enrolled in NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1993, she would help financially support him.
“He’s talked about this publicly, but there were times when I would give him my per diem from a job I was working on so that he could have money to feed himself,” Paulson told Esquire.
Now, Paulson called the fandom for the “Last of Us” and “The Mandalorian” actor “so psychotic,” adding, “Everybody wants a piece of him.”
“You just want him to succeed,” Paulson said. “And that to me, I feel like, is the sign of a major movie star. I’m ready for him to take the reins from the guys from romantic comedies past, like Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson and all these guys. He can be all that.

Crime shows can take on many forms. There are procedurals, shows like "Homicide: Life on the Streets" and "Law and Order" (and its endless spin-offs), and then, there are the gritty masterclass dramas, shows like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos." Some favor the process, some the outcome, though all abound with the kind of detached criminal activity audiences fervently eat up. Just look at "Breaking Bad's" 16 Emmy wins.
"NYPD: Blue," "Hill Street Blues," "Criminal Minds," "CSI," and the like endure because they're accessible. They're fun. They're mainstream. Lucianne Goldberg, a literary agent who advised her friend Linda Tripp to secretly tape conversations with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, has died at age 87 at her home. No cause of death was given by her son, political commentator and author Jonah Goldberg.
Lucianne Goldberg was a conservative activist whose agency specialized in right-wing books. Tripp took her advice and taped Lewinsky talking about her sexual trysts with President Bill Clinton. Tripp’s 20 hours of conversation were used by special prosecutor Kenneth Starr’s investigation, which ultimately saw Clinton impeached by the House of Representatives and acquitted in a Senate trial.
Goldberg met Tripp while working on a proposal for a book on the death of Vince Foster, a Clinton aide whose apparent death by suicide raised many questions. Goldberg encouraged Tripp to break Lewinsky’s trust and give the tapes to Starr. Goldberg later said she was glad Clinton had been caught “at something.

Sarah Paulson will star in and executive produce a movie about Gwen Shamblin, the woman who ran a cult-like diet program and church beginning in the 1980s, Deadline revealed on Sept. 19. The film will be a scripted adaption of the HBO Max docuseries "The Way Down," which chronicles Shamblin's rise and downfall.
Shamblin, who died in 2021, ran a diet program called the Weigh Down Workshop. She quickly amassed a devoted following and went on to found the Remnant Fellowship Church. But she was eventually accused of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse by followers, some of whom said the church advocated abusive discipline and encouraged eating disorders, among many other critiques, per The Guardian. Two of the church's members were also convicted of murdering their own son in 2007, per NBC.
"The Way Down" chronicles Shamblin's rise, as well as the plane crash that led to her death just before the series' completion.

Sarah Paulson is no stranger to playing real people: Among other roles, she won an Emmy award for her portrayal of Marcia Clark in 2016’s “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” and was recently nominated for an Emmy for “Impeachment: American Crime Story” for playing Linda Tripp. Now, Paulson is attached to star and executive produce the scripted adaptation of “The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin,” which HBO Max is developing from its own five-part docuseries.
Michelle Dean, who was the co-creator of the 2019 Hulu limited series “The Act,” is the showrunner of the scripted adaptation.
HBO Max dropped the first three episodes of Marina Zenovich’s investigative docuseries “The Way Down” on Sept. 30 of last year. It detailed Gwen Shamblin Lara’s rise from being a diet guru with her Weigh Down Workshop (launched in 1986) to the founding of her Tennessee church,...

Ken Starr, a former federal appellate judge and a prominent attorney whose criminal investigation of Bill Clinton led to the president’s impeachment, died Tuesday at age 76, his family said.
In 2020, he was recruited to the legal team representing President Donald Trump in the nation’s third presidential impeachment trial.
For many years, Starr’s stellar reputation as a lawyer seemed to place him on a path to the Supreme Court. At age 37, he became the youngest person ever to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, where Chief Justice John Roberts and justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia also had served. From 1989-93, Starr was the solicitor general in the administration of President George H.W. Bush, arguing 25 cases before the Supreme Court.

In a hard-to-call category, Amanda Seyfried won her first Emmy, for a nuanced portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced biotech entrepreneur and one-time Silicon Valley rock star convicted of criminal fraud.
“Thanks for recognizing me among these amazing actors,” said an emotional Seyfried. “This is a really nice feeling!”
Deadline’s Emmy Awards Live Blog
Working on Hulu’s The Dropout “was the best time of my life,” she added as she accepted her first Emmy, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
But Seyfried told press later that playing Homes was pretty taxing. “I was so over her by the end of the show. You have to delude yourself to a point. I had to delude myself more than normal. I had to have compassion for her. I have never played anyone that long. Every single day I gave it all. I was just done.

There are two things to be a little worried about and one thing to be extremely excited about when coming into “The Whale.”
The first element of concern is director Darren Aronofsky, who admittedly has made exceptional films like “Requiem for a Dream” and “Pi” and gotten career-defining performances out of his leads in “Black Swan” and “The Wrestler.” But his last two films, “Noah” and “mother!,” succumbed to all his worst instincts, creating bloated self-indulgent nonsense that was actively painful to sit through.
In “The Whale,” also slightly worrying is the use of “fat suits,” which contemporary audiences are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with. Much of the use of these so-called fat suits has been to create fat-phobic jokes, particularly by turning thin movie stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, and Courteney Cox into walking punchlines. Even when the usage itself is fat-phobic, in the case of Sarah Paulson as...

This is a choice category this year that leans, like its male counterpart, to some heavyweight names playing other heavyweight names. It has clearly been a great year for female roles in Limited Series if you simply consider some of the women who didn’t make the cut, including Julia Roberts who was sensational as Martha Mitchell in Gaslight, Jessica Biel as the murderous Texas housewife in Candy, Elle Fanning as the conflicted Michelle Carter who talked her boyfriend into suicide in The Girl From Plainville, Oscar winners Anne Hathaway, Renée Zellweger, and on and on. But let’s now take the contest to those still standing in this highly competitive category.
Toni Collette,The Staircase

Actress Sarah Paulson is an Emmy winner already, winning in 2016 for her role as prosecutor Marcia Clark in “The People vs. O.J. Simpson.” While Paulson is nominated once again for playing a real-life person, her nomination for “Impeachment” was a surprise to her. It’s also a validation, with Paulson telling IndieWire via phone that “it is the work I am the most proud of, to date.”
Playing the infamous Linda Tripp, who blew the whistle on the affair between former President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky, required Paulson to find a human entry point into a very controversial woman. It also required the actress to physically transform herself, complete with heavy prosthetics and a fat suit.
The aesthetic alone drew criticism, something Paulson admits she was “naïve” to going into the project. “I wish I had been more aware of thinking about all of that in a responsible way,...

When they started working on “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” makeup department head Robin Beauchesne and prosthetics designer Justin Raleigh both found themselves having to look up a lot of information. “A lot of research goes into it, watching a lot of documentaries, talking within the department and figuring out all the different ways that we can do it and also talking to the actors and seeing how they feel and how far they want to go,” Beauchesne tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Raleigh emphasized that they also needed to be mindful of how long it would take to get in and out of the makeup, especially for someone like Sarah Paulson. “She was in that makeup well over a hundred times, so we had to make sure that this was a very efficient process from prosthetics to hair to Robin. It was...

Writer Sarah Burgess and star Sarah Paulson said they were trying to understand and depict what motivated Linda Tripp in Impeachment: American Crime Story. The FX limited series depicts the impeachment hearings of President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) after his affair with Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein). Paulson plays Tripp, who recorded Lewinsky’s phone calls with Clinton and gave them to Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr (Dan Bakkedahl).

Sometimes, a metaphor just works. For Sarah Paulson and her career, it’s a train comparison — something that came up multiple times during our chat about her Emmy nomination for portraying Linda Tripp in “Impeachment: American Crime Story.”
“It was the most entirely unexpected thing in the world,” she says of her nom for lead actress in a limited series or anthology — the sole acting mention for the FX series. While she never expected any of her accolades, when she portrayed Marcia Clark in “The People vs. O.J. Simpson,” there was a different lead-up: “It was like a train running that was very clearly headed in a particular direction.”
This time around was different.
“The Linda train left the station really empty-handed with a whole haul. This one, I guess, just didn’t resonate with people and that’s fine — painful, but fine,” she says. “I was surprised I was there at all.

A television star violated by the public eye. A whistleblower with ulterior motives. An inventor who wasn’t as revolutionary as she advertised. A woman whose shocking death became a sensation. A con artist with a flair for the dramatic. A young mother providing for her daughter one housekeeping job at a time.
As disparate as these characters may seem, two threads bind them together — they’re all based on or inspired by real women, and they earned those who played them Emmy nominations for lead actress in a limited or anthology series.
For the first time in more than a decade, every nominee in the category played a character inspired by, if not directly based on, a real person. The last time this happened was 2009, when Jessica Lange took the win for HBO’s “Grey Gardens.

Sarah Paulson is nominated for an Emmy for her role as Linda Tripp in “Impeachment: American Crime Story” — the sole acting nod for the FX series — but could it be her last time in the anthology? The fourth season, rumored to be focused on “Studio 54,” is in the works.
“I’m sort of in this very interesting place where I’ve taken the last year off, which has been wild. Believe me, don’t think I don’t know what a privileged place it is to sit in and know that I can take a year off and still be able to live my life and not in a fearful way and that is a real really lucky thing,” she says. “I’ve said no to some things, which is a wildly new thing. I think the shows are always extraordinarily well-crafted and things I’ve always been so proud to be part of.

One of the biggest surprises on Emmy nominations morning showed up in the Best Limited/Movie Writing category when “Impeachment: American Crime Story” got nominated, a season that many pundits were clearly underestimating, as lead actress Sarah Paulson also nabbed a bid. This category is especially stunning in that half of these six shows are not nominated in the program category, despite most of them being predicted in this race. That said, as far as potential winners, the two nomination leaders, “The White Lotus” and “Dopesick,” will be battling it out to see who comes out on top.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:
“The White Lotus” (Mike White) – 10/3 odds
“Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong) — 4/1 odds
“Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville) — 5/1 odds
“The Dropout” (“I’m In A Hurry” by Elizabeth Meriwether) — 11/2 odds

Sarah Paulson has another “American Horror Story” to add to her filmography.
The “AHS” star and frequent Hulu collaborator is set to lead Searchlight Pictures’ horror-thriller “Dust” for the streamer. Based on co-director and “Westworld” writer Karrie Crouse’s script out of Sundance Writers’ Lab, “Dust” is set in 1930s Oklahoma where a young mother (Paulson) is haunted by the past as she encounters a threatening presence and takes extraordinary measures to protect her family.
Crouse and Will Joines co-direct the feature after previously collaborating on short film “Propagation.” Principal photography for “Dust” will start in late August, with Emmy winner Paulson also executive producing.

The “American Horror Story” franchise just keeps growing. In 2021, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk‘s long-running horror series was spun-off into a weekly anthology on Hulu titled “American Horror Stories.” That was in addition to FX’s airing of the 10th season of the parent show, “AHS: Double Feature.” Now, both spooky programs have been nominated for a combined four awards at the 2022 Emmys.

Monica Lewinsky was far from the first young woman to have an affair with a married American president. She was just the first one unlucky enough to have Linda Tripp for a confidante. "Make her stay and watch," Lewinsky told the federal prosecutors who greeted her in Room 1012 at the Ritz-Carlton in Arlington, Va., to question her about the nature of her relationship with the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton. "I want that treacherous bitch to see what she has done to me." The "treacherous bitch" was Tripp, and what she did was secretly record phone conversations she had with Lewinsky while pumping her for details about...

This year’s Best Movie/Limited Actress Emmy race is shaping up to be one for the record books, with a strong showing of actresses depicting real-life women in contention. Looking at Gold Derby’s combined odds, 11 of the top 15 spots are taken by performers who are playing such true-to-name nonfiction characters. If we broaden this definition to include characters who are merely inspired by living people, that number changes to 13.
Trending in the top spot, we have Amanda Seyfried portraying Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s “The Dropout.” Television critic Lucy Mangan with The Guardian refers to Seyfried’s performance as “hugely skillful,” going on to say, “Seyfried makes it all work and keeps our attention – even our sympathy.” The actress is also riding high fresh off of her first Oscar nomination for her performance in 2020’s “Mank,” which can often boost a performer’s Emmy chances.

Any limited series created by Ryan Murphy creates controversy, excitement and awards chatter. Six Emmy wins (out of 36 nominations) cement his status as a perpetual contender. His entry this year, the FX limited series “Impeachment: American Crime Story” checked all the Murphy boxes as he zeroed in on the relationship between President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) and White House intern Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein).
The cast is stocked with such Emmy favorites such as Sarah Paulson, a winner for her performance as Marcia Clark in Murphy’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson, who portrays the diabolical Linda Tripp; multiple Emmy winner Edie Falco who embodies an explosive Hillary Clinton and multiple winner Margo Martindale (“The Americans”), who is smarmy literary agent Lucianne Goldberg.
The arc of the limited series based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book traces not only the ill-considered, ill-fated Clinton-Lewinsky affair, but also Tripp’s masterful manipulation of Lewinsky.

In order to convey the claustrophobic feeling of Monica Lewinsky being trapped in her DC apartment in “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” cinematographer Simon Dennis played around with the windows on the set. “Obviously it gives you much more an exposure of an outside but it also feel a little bit more down and kind of restrictive in that way,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The same method was also used to convey the same sort of feeling in the scenes when Lewinsky is being held at the Ritz Carlton by members of the Office of the Independent Counsel. “Again, you have the big bank of windows but you never really get any detail of what’s out there. It’s a bit more abstract and, in a funny way, can feel more like a bad dream.”

Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez’s Peacock series “Mrs. Davis” has cast Margo Martindale, Andy McQueen, and Ben Chaplin.
The trio join previously announced series leads Betty Gilpin and Jake McDorman in the series. Sarah Paulson believes to her core that playing Linda Tripp on “Impeachment: American Crime Story” is the biggest challenge she’s ever had as an actress. “It was a whole lot of fun because she was a really complicated character where nobody felt the need to dull her edges,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). She adds that she relished that opportunity specifically because of its complexity. “I sort of feel the minute you start to get very comfortable and complacent in your work, that’s just not really an interesting place for me.”
“Impeachment,” which can currently be streamed on FX on Hulu, explores the affair between President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) and White House intern Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein), how Tripp taped conversations between her and Lewinsky when they worked at the Pentagon and Ken Starr’s investigation that led to the titular punishment.

“I was so mindful that I was coming into a pre-existing, incredibly successful franchise that Ryan [Murphy] built,” explains Sarah Burgess, the co-writer and showrunner for “Impeachment: American Crime Story” on FX. “Because Ryan directed episode one, I first met him through his ideas for my script that I had written. We were supposed to start shooting this show in March of 2020, so there was a very sudden stop. Finally everything came together in the Fall of 2020 and I met him at a production meeting. He mentioned one of my favorite movies without he and I ever speaking about it, ‘The Lies of Others,’ as a visual reference and tone reference for the show. As a neurotic, self-involved writer it meant so much to me that I felt that this person read and understood the anxious tension in the script.”

Edie Falco is an undeniable Emmy magnet dating back to 1999. The acclaimed actress earned six Emmy nominations for “The Sopranos,” winning three times, and another six for “Nurse Jackie,” winning once. She also scored a bid for her guest spot on “30 Rock” in 2008 and another lead acting nomination for “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders” in 2018. Now, she is hoping for her landmark 15th Emmy nomination for taking on the role of Hillary Clinton on “Impeachment: American Crime Story.”
For much of “Impeachment,” which centers on the Monica Lewinsky–Bill Clinton scandal, Falco’s Hillary floats in the background. While she isn’t given as much to do for most of the series, compared to Beanie Feldstein as Lewinsky, Clive Owen as Bill or Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp, she is an evocative presence that gives an added layer to this fascinating story.

For Meredith Markworth-Pollack, Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson) proved to be the hardest character to design costumes for on the FX limited series, “Impeachment: American Crime Story.” “She was almost six feet, which is very tall for a woman and she had these very broad shoulders and so I think that was the hardest part of the project,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). She also described how it was more than just a padding that gave Paulson the look of the character. “It was really about changing her whole demeanor because if you’re that tall and your shoulders are like this, you have a presence whether you want to or not.”

Composer Mac Quayle has become the go-to music person for many of Ryan Murphy’s projects including “Impeachment: American Crime Story.” The working relationship started in 2014 after he did some work for “The Normal Heart.” “Through that process, I met one of Ryan’s producers and I didn’t really think much of it, you know,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). Six months later he got an unexpected call from that producer about the latest installment of “American Horror Story.” “He said, ‘Would you be available to write a cue for us this afternoon?’ I happened to be free. I wrote the cue and the next day they hired me.”

Just in time for this year’s Emmy Awards, one of 2021’s starriest limited series will finally become broadly available to streaming viewers. This week, FX announced that Ryan Murphy’s remaining catalog of FX shows is officially on the move to Hulu, including “Impeachment,” which focused on the story of Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) and Bill Clinton (Clive Owen).
In addition to “Impeachment” as well as the early cycles of “American Crime Story,” the third and final season of “Pose” will also migrate over to Hulu starting March 7. “Pose” Seasons 1 and 2 and the previous seasons of “Crime Story” were previously available on Netflix.
This new agreement with Hulu also applies to future seasons of “American Horror Story” and “American Crime Story.” The newest season of “AHS” is scheduled to be released sometime in the fall, marking it the first time a new season of the series will premiere on Hulu.

After a conspicuous absence from any streaming platforms during its linear run, Impeachment: American Crime Story is coming to Hulu imminently, the streamer announced on Thursday.
Impeachment, which served as the third installment of FX’s Crime Story anthology, will drop on Hulu Monday, March 7. The 10-episode project first aired from September through November last year and chronicled President Bill Clinton’s headline-grabbing affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky in the 1990s. Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart) starred as Lewinsky, while Sarah Paulson co-starred as Lewinsky’s confidant Linda Tripp.
