Joshua Ray Walker, the Texas country songwriter known for haunting ballads like “Voices” and “Canyon,” announced that he’s been diagnosed with colon cancer. In a social media post, Walker, 32, wrote that’ll be undergoing surgery in January.
Earlier this month, Walker performed a cover of Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You” with his band on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, but has canceled shows in recent weeks, including a pair last weekend. In the fall, he performed a full concert opening for the Killers in Reno while suffering from appendicitis and...

Joshua Ray Walker showed off his knack for choosing left-of-center cover songs during a Tuesday night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The Texas songwriter and his band covered Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You,” a track off What Is It Even?, Walker’s album of songs by female artists.
With he and his band dressed in pink and sparkling attire, including a disco-ball helmet, Walker continued to toy with the fashion norms he smashed in the music video for “Cuz I Love You.” But the get-ups were only a small...

For those who’ve seen Joshua Ray Walker perform, they know his voice can alternately hush and rouse a crowd. (Catch him perform “Voices” if you ever get the chance and be amazed.) The Texas songwriter delivers one of his most dynamic recorded takes on “Cuz I Love You” — a Lizzo cover that announces his new album What Is It Even?.
The rendition arrives with a music video that finds Walker flirting with gender norms. What is it even? How about a vocalist confident in who he is as an artist.

On May 13, 1975, Ray Benson, leader of the Western-swing heroes Asleep at the Wheel, was readying his band to make their stage debut at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, when he received the news that Bob Wills, the “King of Western Swing,” had died that morning in nearby Fort Worth.
“An AP reporter told me as I got off the bus,” the 72-year-old tells Rolling Stone backstage at the recent grand reopening of the Longhorn. “He says, ‘Are you going to cancel?’ I said, ‘Cancel? We’re going to glorify this and play his music.

After a months-long tour that found him playing venues from Brooklyn to Boston with Vandoliers, slaying crowds aboard the Outlaw Country Cruise, and returning to the Grand Ole Opry stage, Joshua Ray Walker made his CBS Saturday Morning debut this weekend.
The Dallas, Texas, songwriter delivered three songs off his latest album, See You Next Time. Backed by his tight-af band — bassist Billy Kuykendall, drummer Trey Pendergrass, and pedal-steel maestro Adam “Ditch” Kurtz — Walker tore through “Three Strikes” and “Sexy After Dark,” before playing a chilling solo rendition of “Flash Paper,...

Texas country-punk band Vandoliers are standing in solidarity with drag performers and the LGBTQ+ community. On Thursday night, the group performed their set at the Shed in Maryville, Tennessee, with all six of its members wearing dresses in protest of the state’s newly enacted law on public drag performance.
“Fuck a drag bill,” they wrote in an Instagram post. “Gonna auction off the dresses we wore onstage in Tennessee tonight and donate the money to a couple of LGBTQ charities in this state.”

Cody Jinks didn’t mention Austin by name in his 2010 song “Hippies and Cowboys,” but it’s easy to read one particular lyric as a subtle shot at the city and its evolution from outlaws and artists haven to a home for industry insiders and tech bros.

That high lonesome note that Joshua Ray Walker held in his spine-tingling ballad “Voices” hits in an entirely different way in his swaggering new song “Sexy After Dark.” While “Voices,” a breakthrough for the Texas songwriter, was a dark, somber commentary on suicidal ideations, “Sexy After Dark” is a gloriously confident anthem that frames Walker’s falsetto as a come-hither call.

Jeff Saenz got home late the night of June 1st. He’d spent a long day at Modern Electric Sound Recorders, the recording studio he owns in Dallas, Texas, and was just settling in with his family when the power went out a little after 10 o’clock. Like many of his neighbors up and down the street, Saenz stepped outside to investigate. What happened next nearly killed him: While walking through his yard, he came in contact with a downed electric line in the dark and got electrocuted.

Mike and the Moonpies had just finished their gig at Antone’s in Austin last Thursday when the city began to freeze. The country band had plans to rendezvous at their producer’s studio in Wimberley, about 45 minutes southwest, to work on a new album.
All five Moonpies, along with their tour manager and merchandise seller, made it, but conditions quickly deteriorated over the weekend throughout much of the state of Texas. A sold-out show they had scheduled for Saturday in Luckenbach was scrapped, and soon the power at the compound went out.

Texas country-punk-garage rock outfit Ottoman Turks cook up some molten, Black Sabbath-influenced riffs with their new song “35 to Life.” The track, accompanied by a gory, slasher flick-style video, will appear on the group’s second album, titled Ottoman Turks II, which arrives on March 5th, 2021.
In “35 to Life,” the band looks to the scene and aftermath of one of Dallas’ best-known tragedies: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Fittingly for the scuzzy, grimy musical backdrop, their lyrics imagine the former leader as a reanimated zombie with a penchant for fast cars and women,...

When Joshua Ray Walker was a kid in Dallas, Texas, his mom took a job doing marketing at motorsports events. Every weekend, he’d tag along with her to monster truck competitions, motorcycle rallies, car and boat shows — anything that had a loud engine really. “Basically any redneck sport you can think of,” he says.
Walker liked being around the cars and trucks, but he was most fascinated by the rough-around-the-edges women who were recruited — often by his mother — to promote a certain product. Which is to say they were paid to wear a bikini,...

Joshua Ray Walker taps into his inner Dwight Yoakam on the ferocious new song “True Love,” a double barrel blast of yearning vocals and classic country playing. The track arrives with the announcement of Walker’s new album Glad You Made It, due July 10th.
Musically, “True Love” can’t contain its joy, with vibrant shredding steel and a driving backbeat, but the lyrics, like much of Walker’s songwriting, are bittersweet. “Let’s just call a spade a spade: true love was meant to fade,” he sings in the chorus.

Joshua Ray Walker mixes high-lonesome country music with the surrealism of filmmaker David Lynch in the new video for “Voices,” the first new solo music from the Texas songwriter since the 2019 release of his debut album Wish You Were Here.
