Need to escape into something mesmerizing and psychedelic? This 105 second long journey from below to above and back again will take you on a trip like you just dropped some acid, but without the acid. Leviathan is an animated (very) short film made by a Canadian animator / filmmaker / artist named Nick Cross. It's not even two minutes long, but will leave a strong impression on you with all the strange animals and creatures and objects that appear throughout. He explains, "that which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above" as an intro, an the film goes on a cyclical voyage through the above and below to remind us how connected everything is. It's impossible to even describe this short properly, you just have to experience it for yourself. Thanks to Cartoon ...

Canadian director Nick Cross (Yellow Cake, The Pig Farmer), who has a reputation for his bizarre yet visually intriguing animation, has taken a break on his solo independent feature film Black Sunrise to produce another animated short, Perihelion. To say his previous shorts is quite a trip would be a gross understatement and this is absolutely no exception. Here's how he described it:Perihelion is a sort of animated tone poem. It is a short film that toes the line between narrative and non-narrative, essentially having no real beginning, middle or end. The idea being that you could start watching it at any point and it would (hopefully) have the same impact. Visually, I was heavily inspired by the work of a number of German painters from the...

I’m always on the lookout for weird animated movies, and acclaimed filmmaker Nick Cross’ latest animated feature “Black Sunrise” seems to be precisely what I’m looking for. Multi-eyed werewolf-type creatures, headless horses running backwards, angry females lashing out at the world — all of these elements come together into something that seems designed to break your mind into several meaty pieces. And while I’m not entirely sure what the film is all about, the imagery is enough to lure me into a screening should the opportunity present itself. Hint, hunt. Stop by Nick Cross’ Animation Blog for more information...

A wholesome lighthearted animated film for the whole family to enjoy this ain't. Canadian animator/director Nick Cross of the strange, yet visually intriguing animated short The Pig Farmer has unveiled the second trailer to his debut feature-length animated film Black Sunrise. As with the previous trailer, it continues to baffle the mind with even more bizarre imagery and I can't help but wonder if the independent filmmaker was seriously pissed drunk or doped-up while he was animating this project. Nevertheless, his trippy imagination is crazy in a good way.Black Sunrise is the story of two different people attempting to survive in a world embroiled in tyranny, war, and environmental degradation. You'll find the second trailer embedded below....

Animation director Nick Cross initially caught our attention with his trippy animated short The Pig Farmer back in January. After a span of twelve years of producing several critically acclaimed shorts, Cross will enter his first foray into a feature-length project with a pseudo Conan-meets-dystopia film, Black Sunrise and he posted a minute-long teaser trailer at his blogsite to reveal his current progress. He also launched a fund-raising campaign to seek financial support so if you like what you see and you would like to help, you can donate here. I have a small window of time in Tribeca duties so I must wrap the unfortunately brief Nashville Film Festival coverage.
New Directors Competition
This is the jury that I served on along with Lou Harry A&E editor of the Indianapolis Business Journal and actor Brian O’Halloran who you’ll remember from Clerks. It's interesting to watch so many debut features back to back because patterns do emerge in regards to strengths and weaknesses within first efforts. The jury discussions were yet another reminder – as if I needed one covering the Oscars so closely each year – that one man’s treasure is another man’s… anyway, the discussions were lively and fun but so much disagreement! We ended up not spreading the wealth much because we were very divided about our slate of films and even the individual achievements within the films. Our...

The 16th annual Bradford International Film Festival, which will run March 18-28, is a total celebration of all forms of cinema, from classic films to modern world cinema to a tribute to Cinerama and more. But, most excitingly, is a bombastic collection of some of the best, most exciting underground films being made today.
From Bad Lit’s perspective, the most thrilling screening of the entire 10-day affair is the new film by British filmmaker Peter Whitehead, Terrorism Considered as One of the Fine Arts. In the U.S., Whitehead is a “lost” filmmaker from the underground’s heyday in the ’60s, being left out of most histories of the underground movement. Whitehead directed several influential films, including Wholly Communion and The Fall, before dropping out of filmmaking in the mid-’70s.
Film historian Jack Sargeant wrote extensively about and interviewed Whitehead for his wonderful book on Beat cinema, Naked Lens.

Troy Little’s graphic novel Angora Napkin is being adapted as an animated project to air on Canada’s Teletoon in March of 2009.
Idw will publish the book as a 152-page hardcover in January and the publisher describes the book as “an adult comedy about a girl band pop trio.”
Little (Chiaroscuro) is involved in all aspects of the production of the Angora Napkin animated pilot.
Teletoon, in a Canada wide search for new and original adult animation ideas, selected Angora Napkin to be developed as an animated pilot. “The idea of Angora Napkin was originally developed by Nick Cross and me as an animated series so it’s really interesting to see the project come full circle” Little said in a release. “We’ve teamed up with Mugisha Enterprises to produce the cartoon. Both Nick and I are putting many hours into the cartoon and are involved in all...
