Actor Jack Huston makes his directorial debut with the drama “The Day of the Fight,” starring Michael Pitt, in Venice’s Horizons Extra. The black and white film, set in the early 1980s, follows Mikey (Pitt) through his day as he prepares for a comeback fight at Madison Square Garden that night. But Mikey is preparing for something much bigger, as the screenplay – written by Huston – delves into his past, his relationships and all the pain, sorrow and joy they bring.
He visits his ex-wife (Nicolette Robinson), trainer (Ron Perlman), best friend (John Magaro) and, in one showstopping scene, his father (played by Joe Pesci), who’s been cut down by dementia and can’t talk or even move on his own, in a nursing home. Pesci uses only his eyes to convey emotions — arguably a bold play by a rookie filmmaker to use the famously animated actor in such a subtle way.

Here's a TV curio that deserves a second look. Back before Bob Odenkirk became Saul Goodman, before Charlie Kaufman became an Oscar-winning writer/director, and before David Mirkin became showrunner over at "The Simpsons," they all worked together on a little-known show that, honestly, shouldn't have ever made it to air.
"Get A Life" was a short-lived satirical take on the sitcom format starring Chris Elliott as Chris Peterson — a 30-year-old paper boy who still lived with his parents, Gladys and Fred Peterson. The show appeared on Fox and ran from 1990 to 1992 before it was unceremoniously axed by the network. And even though there's a chance you've probably never heard of it, "Get A Life" had a small but significant cult following that persists to this day — mostly due to its often surreal and absurdist humor that made it unlike any other network show at the time. As the Washington Post put it,...

“’Welcome to Chippendales’ was a very research-heavy project,” the series’ costume designer, Peggy Schnitzer, told Women’s Wear Daily.
According to Schnitzer, that research included poring through vintage photography books and watching films films set in the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s.

“The Villains of Valley View” has been renewed for Season 2 at the Disney Channel, Variety has learned exclusively.
The multi-cam comedy show, which hails from Disney Branded Television, follows a family of supervillains forced to hide their powers and adopt “normalcy” in suburbia. Season 2 will begin production this fall in Los Angeles. New episodes from Season 1 will resume airing on Oct. 7
“It isn’t hard to see why audiences have fallen in love with the villainous Madden family,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “Despite a penchant for utilizing their superpowers in everyday life, Amy and family ultimately care about and support one another. Even though life can be messy, ridiculous, and sometimes frightening, the Maddens demonstrate the (super)power of family and togetherness.”

There’s breathless, relentless energy to the work of Josephine Decker, a trait usually accompanied by a sense of the unexpected, never quite knowing where her narrative may turn or how her characters could express their mercurial emotions. Her latest film The Sky Is Everywhere, adapted by Jandy Nelson from her own novel, features a strong sense of the former without ever offering the latter. What results is an aesthetically imaginative, narratively banal YA adaptation hitting too-familiar beats despite its relatively invigorating style.

Netflix’s “The Irishman” struck out at the Oscars on Sunday night, despite its 10 nominations.
Martin Scorsese’s sprawling three-and-a-half-hour look at a gangster’s life received 10 Academy Award nominations on Jan. 13 and came away empty-handed.
“The Irishman” has now joined five titles that amount to the Oscar snubs hall of fame that hit double figures in nominations, but wound up with nothing at the awards ceremonies. That roster is led by Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple” and Herbert Ross’ “The Turning Point,” which both received 11 nominations. “The Irishman” now joins three other films — Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York,” the Coen brothers’ “True Grit” and David O. Russell’s “American Hustle” — with 10 nominations and no wins.
Netflix also campaigned heavily for “Marriage Story,” which was nominated for six Oscars and won one for Laura Dern for supporting actress. The streamer netted two Oscar wins for the night, including best documentary for “American Factory.

Though it lost Best Picture, “1917,” Sam Mendes’ single-shot, World War I extravaganza, was rewarded with the most crafts Oscars Sunday night. For its technical virtuosity it received three awards, powered by cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second win for his brilliant camera choreography.
Deakins was joined by the sound mixing team of Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for their intricate soundscape as part of the continuous-shot narrative, and, surprisingly, Mpc Film (the dark horse winner) for VFX. Ironically, though, Mpc’s win overshadowed its own innovative virtual production and photoreal animation on Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” Yet this supporting visual effects work played an integral role in making stitches invisible and creating CG environments (including No Man’s Land and the burning village of Écoust).
Meanwhile, Pixar won its 10th animated feature Oscar for “Toy Story 4,” and “Hair Love,” the black father-daughter bonding work, took home the animated short Oscar.

“It’s like a marriage,” confesses costume designer Sandy Powell about collaborating with Christopher Peterson on “The Irishman.” Peterson explains, “We’re friends and share on common aesthetic. And we meet somewhere in the middle.” Watch our exclusive video interview with the Oscar nominated designers above.

Period costumes this season run the gamut from Hollywood counterculture, to mob fashion, to DC’s legendary comic book villain, to the reinvention of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved characters, to chic fashion statements in war-torn Nazi Germany.
For Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Arianne Phillips created contrasting iconic looks (circa 1969) for Leonardo DiCaprio’s has-been actor, Brad Pitt’s rugged stunt man, and Margot Robbie’s angelic Sharon Tate. It’s turtlenecks and leather for DiCaprio, Hawaiian shirt and denim for Pitt, and yellow hot pants and go-go boots for Robbie, among other vintage looks.
Three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell did less flamboyant work with co-designer Christopher Peterson on Martin Scorsese’s mobster epic, “The Irishman.” They made different looking threads for Robert De Niro’s mob hitman, Frank Sheeran, Al Pacino’s Teamsters leader, Jimmy Hoffa, and Joe Pesci’s crime boss, Russell Bufalino.

The 10 craft categories of the Oscars should be somewhat predictable: Branches vote on their own kind, and guild nominations traditionally serve as a trusted barometer. However, sometimes the Academy doesn’t agree — and when that happens, it’s worth diving into the reasons why.
“Joker”: What’s Bizarre About Its 11 Nominations
To say “Joker” overperformed is an understatement, which makes snubbing its production design — its most effective storytelling element — that much more bizarre. What does production designer Mark Friedberg — invaluable for the films of Ang Lee, Barry Jenkins, Todd Haynes, Wes Anderson, Jim Jarmusch, along with “Selma” and “Across the Universe” — need to do to earn his first nomination?
With “Joker,” Friedberg bridged the gap between the historically accurate down-and-out, garbage-strike days of New York City in 1981 and Gotham. Virtually every frame visualized a world in which you could feel how Gotham weighs on Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix). While...

Above all the titles screening at the 35th Santa Barbara Intl. Film Festival, a 13-minute world premiere short stands as perhaps the ultimate example of the event’s goal of presenting films that balance local interests and global perspectives. Titled “Santa Barbara,” the short is about director Diana Markosian’s mother, who came to the coastal California town as a Russian mail-order bride after seeing the NBC soap opera of the same name.
“It was the first thing to be broadcast on Russian television following the fall of the Soviet Union,” says programming director Michael Albright.
The short — one of a record 4,000 feature and short films submitted this year — came in as a Russian sidebar was being planned. “There was this weird phenomenon where we were thinking about doing this section and this submission came in, sort of bringing it all together.”
Synchronicities aside, that balancing act is a hallmark of the festival,...

Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, World War I thriller, “1917,” and Todd Phillips’ $1 billion blockbuster, “Joker,” dominated the Oscar craft nominations on Monday, grabbing seven apiece.
Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” each scored five nominations, while Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” nabbed three along with James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari.” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” each came away with two nominations, and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” was singled out for Randy Newman’s romantic score.
But “1917” provided the biggest tour de force crafts event of the season, with nominations for Roger Deakins’ uniquely orchestrated cinematography, Dennis Gassner’s exacting production design, Thomas Newman’s haunting score, the unusual sound editing and sound mixing, and, surprisingly, makeup and hairstyling and VFX.

Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” hits Netflix today and it stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. De Niro plays Frank Sheeran, a truck driver who meets Russell Bufalino (Pesci). Spanning several decades, the film follows Sheeran as he gets involved in the greatest unsolved mob mystery – the disappearance of union boss Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino).
The film is a masterpiece from one of our greatest directors of all-time, starring some of the greatest actors of all-time. It required hundreds of costumes from designers Sandy Powell and Christopher Peterson, over 297 shooting locations in the New York/New Jersey areas and brand new technology courtesy of the team at Ilm.
Visual Effects Supervisor Pablo Helman was working on Scorsese’s “Silence” when he first heard about the story. “Marty emailed me the script overnight after we had talked over Thanksgiving dinner.I read it and we were shooting, and I said,...

While the cinematic fare of 2019 casts a wide-ranging net, a largely male-centric line-up dominates the awards season buzz. But from Martin Scorsese’s mature mobster saga “The Irishman” (Netflix) to Todd Phillips’ dark comic-book spinoff “Joker” (Warner Bros.), many of the year’s masculine-leaning picks were either led or significantly aided by women storytellers’ vision and craftsmanship behind the camera.
With the enormous task of producing both of the aforesaid films, as well as executive-producing Josh and Benny Safdie’s manic crime tale “Uncut Gems” (A24), Emma Tillinger Koskoff is among the year’s most prominent creative forces. (Her 2019 credits also include two notable female-driven films: Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir” and Danielle Lessovitz’s “Port Authority.”) Koskoff has been Scorsese’s collaborator for 17 years, and “The Irishman” had been on the filmmaker’s plate for over a decade. Three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell is the rock star of costume designers, known for her eclectic and adventurous sense of style. Powell earned her cred with the breakout “Velvet Goldmine,” the 1998 musical drama from Todd Haynes, where she got to channel David Bowie by way of her pre-teen idol worship of glam icon Marc Bolan. But her previous work with Derek Jarman and Sally Potter (“Orlando”) showed flashes of her iconoclastic signature.
“It’s this mix of her punk nature and this instinctual approach she has,” said costume designer Christopher Peterson, who started with Powell as her assistant costumer 15 years ago, and recently co-designed “The Irishman” with his mentor. “We research what the period sillhouette is and she looks at it, and she keeps looking at it, until she decides, and then she pounces, and sometimes it’s the period sillhouette, absolutely textbook, and other times she flips it on its head,...

House painters don't usually wear expensive jewelry on the job, but the ring Robert De Niro wears in The Irishman is special.
"Only three people in the world have one of these, and only one of them is Irish," Russell Bufalino, played by Joe Pesci, tells Robert De Niro's Frank Sheeran in Martin Scorsese's gangster swan song, The Irishman. Bufalino, a crime figure so powerful he dictated casting to the producers of The Godfather, presents the Teamsters union official and sometime contract killer, with a gold ring. You just want to kiss it, like the capos of the Corleone Family do with Don Michael's ring at the ending of the Francis Ford Coppola classic.

From the outset, Martin Scorsese steered away from a “Goodfellas” wardrobe for the legendary Robert De Niro (hitman Frank Sheeran), Al Pacino (Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa), and Joe Pesci (Philly crime boss Russell Bufalino) in “The Irishman.” That’s because the characters had to fly under the radar in this zigzagging mobster epic spanning five decades about the intersection of crime and politics.
“These guys don’t dress to be noticed — you know, the peacock variety of those gangster guys,” said costume designer Sandy Powell. “Yet we had to distinguish them from each other [with their own defining silhouettes].” And the sheer volume of clothing and multiple fittings each day (De Niro required more than a hundred wardrobe changes) demanded that the three-time Oscar winner promote her assistant, Christopher Peterson, to co-costume designer.

Costume designer Sandy Powell has over 50 credits to her name and has won three Academy Awards. She has worked with Todd Haynes, Jean-Marc Vallée, Rob Marshall, Stephen Frears and Martin Scorsese.
“The Irishman” marks her seventh time collaborating with Scorsese, but this was an epic. Exclusive: Sea Wall/A Life, the Broadway production of two solo one-acts starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge became the first show of the 2019-2020 Broadway season to recoup its initial investment, producers said today.
The $2.8 million production, which closed this past Sunday, had a limited engagement of only nine weeks – 74 performances – at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre, and went out on a high note: The final week of performances grossed $854,678, the highest in the show’s run.
Produced by Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories, Ambassador Theatre Group, Seaview Productions, and Benjamin Lowy Productions, Sea Wall/A Life completed a sold-out Off Broadway run at the Public Theater last winter before making the jump to Broadway over the summer. Previews at the Hudson began July 26, with an official opening of Aug. 8, making for a total of 14 previews and 60 regular performances.
Written by Simon Stephens and Nick Payne, with both directed by Carrie Cracknell, the pair of one acts received universal critical acclaim, with the Hudson 96% full, on average, throughout the run.
According to Ambassador Theatre Group, which owns the Hudson, 73% of ticket
buyers were first time Hudson attendees, suggesting an unusually large percentage of young or first-time theater-goers. The producers said that, according to TodayTix figures, about 65% of purchases for the production on that particular platform were made by buyers under 44 years old.
“Simon, Nick, Carrie, Jake, and Tom created a daring and unforgettable piece of art that critics and audiences responded to, with many returning multiple times,” said Riva Marker, producer, president and co-founder (with Gyllenhaal) of Nine Stories. “The great success of Sea Wall/A Life proved that storytelling in its most elemental form – a single actor, alone on stage – can connect with people and create a must-see theatrical experience. Opening on Broadway during the season’s toughest months of summer for a limited run and returning our investment in nine weeks is nothing short of a coup. We are incredibly grateful to the audiences, many first-time theatergoers to Hudson Theatre.”
During previews, Gyllenhaal and Sturridge began hosting weekly talkbacks with audiences on the plays’ topics of “love, faith, family, and loss,” a no-doubt popular attraction given the stars’ popularity. In the production’s final weeks, audience members were invited to share their personal stories, which were then posted on the production’s social media.
Gyllenhaal and Sturridge also recorded Sea Wall/A Life as an Audible Original production, Deadline reported last month, for an upcoming release.
The creative team for Sea Wall/A Life included Laura Jellinek (scenic design), Kaye Voyce (costume design), Christopher Peterson (costume design), Guy Hoare (lighting design), Daniel Kluger (sound design), Luke Halls (projection design), and Stuart Earl (original music).
Sea Wall/A Life was produced on Broadway by Nine Stories, Ambassador Theatre
Group, Seaview Productions, Benjamin Lowy Productions, Lfg Theatrical,
Audible, Gavin Kalin Productions, Glass Half Full Productions, Jacob Langfelder, Brian Moreland, Roth-Manella Productions, Salman Vienn Al-Rashid Friends, Slsm Theatricals, Teresa Tsai in association with Dunetz Restieri Productions, Morwin Schmookler, Jane & Mark Wilf and The Public Theater.

Broken World #1 (of 4)
Written by Frank J. Barbiere

Letters by Ed Dukeshire
Published by Boom! Studios
Broken World is another comic that falls under the ‘end of the world’ genre that seems to persist in relevancy even after the supposed ‘judgment day’ has already passed us back in 2012. Considering the beating down of the genre through mundane films, the comic sphere allows for a little more experimentation and an attempt at tackling some unique perspectives. Broken World accomplishes these things early on, traversing through the usual doomsday tropes, begging for more; especially after that final page.
Our main character, Elena Marlowe, is first seen retrieving a fake pass that will allow her access to the rockets that are bringing Earth’s ‘pure’ individuals to the arks that lie on the outskirts of Earth’s orbit. The undesirable individuals will remain on Earth...

Just about every year, brilliant movies are utterly ignored by the Oscars. The Searchers, Groundhog Day, Breathless, King Kong, Casino Royale, Touch of Evil, Caddyshack, Mean Streets, The Big Lebowski — the Academy has a long history of overlooking comedies, action movies, horror flicks, hard-boiled genre pics, artsy foreign films, and documentaries that aren’t about World War II. This year, we’ll be taking a closer look at films that were too small, too weird, or perhaps simply too awesome for the Academy Awards. These are the Non-Nominees.
