From the start, there’s plenty to like about The Catcher Was a Spy, directed by Ben Lewin and starring Paul Rudd. Based on the fascinating life of pro baseball player Moe Berg and adapted from Nicholas Dawidoff’s book of the same name, this is the type of film that feels slightly out of place at Sundance. There’s nothing particularly controversial about the subject matter, nothing brazen or overly ambitious in the technique. Lewin is clearly angling for a classical Hollywood studio picture aesthetic and he mostly succeeds, only sometimes betrayed by his budget.
Rudd plays Berg, a washed-up catcher who takes on a job with the Office of Strategic Services (Oss) after retiring from baseball. We learn early on that he’s a man of many faces. If “The Catcher Was Spy” weren’t based on a true story, you’d most likely hear people say that it was far-fetched and implausible. The story of Moe Berg, a major-league baseball player whose double life had him spying on the Germans during WWII, was originally an extraordinary book by Nicholas Dawidoff, but much like many adaptations, the translation from page to screen just doesn’t work.

Deadline reports that Jeff Daniels and Billions star Paul Giamatti have closed deals to join WWII drama The Catcher Was a Spy.
They’ll buddy up with Ant-Man‘s Paul Rudd and Guy Pearce, who climbed on board to play military specialist Furman just last week. Daniels is attached to the role of O.S.S. Chief “Wild Bill” Donovan – commonly referred to as the “Father of Central Intelligence” long before the CIA was born – while Giamatti will portray a physicist known as Goudsmit. Leading the charge for this one is Rudd, who signed on to play Moe Berg early on in development. A multilingual pro baseball player, in his time away from the field, Berg secretly moonlighted as an agent for the Office of Strategic Services – hence the title – during the throes of World War II, accepting assignments all across the Caribbean, South America and even mainland Europe.

The Catcher Was A Spy, the movie about a real-life baseball player turned American spy, has begun filling out its cast. The production’s already landed its lead in Paul Rudd, who will play Moe Berg, the former White Sox player who decided to follow up his baseball career with some time in the secretive service. Now Empire Magazine reports that Guy Pearce will co-star with Rudd. Pearce’s role is currently unknown, though we could see him playing a crotchety coach giving Moe a hard time at Comiskey Park, or the suave mentor who helps him figure out just how to spy on people.
The Sessions’ Ben Lewin is directing from a script by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan). While he awaits news on his role, Pearce can look forward to having the President barge in on the three-night run of the gay rights drama, When We Rise.

The Catcher Was a Spy, Ben Lewin’s WWII drama that mines inspiration from Nicholas Dawidoff’s 1994 biography, has recruited Guy Pearce to its ranks.
That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, noting that Pearce has landed a supporting role in the period piece, and will star opposite Ant-Man‘s Paul Rudd. Dawidoff’s biography, The Catcher Was A Spy: The Mysterious Life of Moe Berg, chronicles the remarkable journey of Berg who was, quite literally, both a catcher and a spy.

It's been really cool to watch Paul Rudd's career evolve from smaller movies like Clueless and Wet Hot American Summer to behemoths like Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War, and the best part about it has been that he's willing to keep all sorts of different projects in the mix. He's clearly graduated to the big leagues, but he still makes little comedies like They Came Together and Netflix's Wet Hot prequel First Day of Camp in between blockbusters.

If I were going to make a list of all the things I dig in this world of ours, somewhere near the top would undoubtedly be movies, baseball and Steven Soderbergh. Which is the reason why I was so bummed when Soderbergh’s “Moneyball” film suddenly fell apart a few months ago.
