The Seattle world premiere of the Jaws-inspired stage musical Bruce has reeled in its Steven Spielberg: The Tony-nominated actor Jarrod Spector will play the young filmmaker circa 1974 as he confronts various challenges while directing what would become the most ferocious of all summer blockbusters.
Not least of those challenges: the “highly dysfunctional mechanical star named Bruce,” as the musical’s synopsis states, referring to the robot shark that made filming a nightmare.
Based on The Jaws Log, a 1975 nonfiction behind-the-scenes account of the film’s production by Jaws co-screenwriter Carl Gottlieb, the musical, directed and choreographed by Stratford Festival’s Donna Feore, begins previews at Seattle Rep’s Bagley Wright Theater on May 27, with opening night set for June 8. The engagement runs through June 26.

NBC’s “Annie Live!” has cast Jane Krakowski as Lily St. Regis. Lily is described as the “sassy” and “sticky-fingered” partner of Rooster Hannigan, who is being played by Tituss Burgess.
Yes, it’s an “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” reunion this December on NBC!
The St. Regis role is basically the final major one NBC needed to book. In the story, Lily and Rooster try to pass themselves off as Annie’s parents. They find an ally in their villainy in Miss Hannigan, who will be played in the NBC December special by Taraji P. Henson.
In addition to Henson and the comedy duo of Krakowski and Burgess, Harry Connick Jr. has been cast as Daddy Warbucks, and Nicole Scherzinger as Grace. Following a nationwide search, newcomer Celina Smith was selected to play the titular role of Annie for the NBC version.
Krakowski can certainly sing, and has enjoyed her share of Broadway stage time.

“Annie Live!” landed at NBC after being shopped to all four major broadcast networks. “NBC is where we started these live musicals and I still have so much affection for it,” Greenblatt said.

Production designer Jason Sherwood was responsible for the elegant, swirling design of the 2020 Oscars, and he just received an Emmy nomination for his work. The nomination comes a year after winning an Emmy for his design on “Rent: Live,” and he was hired mere months later to design the Oscars. “They wanted the show to visually feel different than it had in years before while still maintaining the polish and the integrity and the elegance of Hollywood’s most glamorous night,” says Sherwood in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby. “I really wanted to explore what it would feel like if the moving images of the movies were exploded from a normal movie screen and turned into something that felt more representative of the way that they were.” Watch the exclusive interview with Sherwood above.

IndieWire recently spoke with rookie show producers Stephanie Allain and Lynette Taylor Howell and production designer Jason Sherwood about what to expect from the upcoming ceremony, broadcasting Sunday, February 9 on ABC. “We can do all the planning that we want, and we can come up with all the great ideas,” Taylor Howell said. “And then the nominations come out and you have to throw it off into the air and start over. But we built a great foundation.”

A 30-year-old production designer hailing from the world of New York theater, Jason Sherwood entered the world of television just last year, and has already racked up his first Emmy nomination, for his contributions to Rent: Live.
Interning for Derek McLane—the production designer behind The Sound of Music Live!—at a time when the live TV musical format was just beginning to making a resurgence, Sherwood was “obsessed with the idea that a musical was going to be given a mainstream platform in that way,” he told Deadline recently. Following the way in which the form was approached with each new take, Sherwood was impressed, though he couldn’t shake the idea that there was something missing from those efforts. “I thought those first couple were beautiful,” he says, “but didn’t necessarily embrace the idea of their own live-ness.”

Sets crafted for television have not traditionally been known for their glamour, says “Fosse/Verdon” (FX) production designer Alex Digerlando.
“TV was always about characters interacting, and sets were something to fill the background,” he notes. “You got close-up and medium shots and you needed some kind of background to make it feel not random. To ground the action.”
But as the action has ramped up, so have expectations for production design, even though networks don’t always make extra room in their below-the-line budgets, leaving the art department with the same funds whether a show is contemporary or period.
That leads production designers including Digerlando — along with his fellow designers Michael Whetstone (ABC’s “The Kids Are Alright”) and Jason Sherwood (Fox’s “Rent”) — to come up with some pretty creative solutions. Whetstone’s Cleary family home on the recently axed “Kids” is an impressive set, a full three-bedroom structure...

Angel Dumott Schunard’s swan song in “Rent” is the double-entendre infused “Contact,” a high-concept number that features the whole company. The song begins seemingly just as a representation of the various couples’ sex lives but soon turns into a heartbreaking solo as Angel enters a fever dream and then dies of complications from HIV/AIDS. Jonathan Larson originally conceived the number to sound as a club track, which meant relying on pre-recorded music, rather than the live orchestra, during the stage productions. Since the goal was to honor but also enhance that formative vision, the team behind Fox’s live broadcast staging took the musical’s lead when it came to utilizing a single, central set piece. But to better focus audience attention on Angel’s state of mind, the number opens on a close-up of her face, punctuating the emotional dichotomy of her desire to live with her dark fate.

“I am a ‘heart creature’ myself,” reveals production designer Jason Sherwood. “I like to have a personal connection to something” he says of the projects he chooses, “to find an empathetic bridge between me and the piece.” Sherwood chatted with Gold Derby about the connection he had with “Rent” and how it inspired his impressive production design for Fox’s “Rent: Live.” Watch the full video interview above.
Sherwood’s first experience with the iconic musical came as a teenager, sitting in a first row student rush seat at the Nederlander Theatre. He calls it a “formative” and unforgettable experience. His resulting “enthusiasm and love for the material” nabbed him this design job years later, when producer Marc Platt and director Michael Greif were planning Fox’s live broadcast.

On working with Greif, who directed the show on Broadway, Sherwood calls it a “surreal, strange dream come true.
