Update: Daniel Richtman has learned that there’s not only a Mummy prequel in the works at Universal, but there are two other Mummy projects in the works as well. He writes, “There are no less than Three Mummy projects in development at Universal, one is a direct sequel to the Fraser films.” So fans might get to see Brendan Fraser make his long-awaited return to the role of Rick O’Connell after all!
The original article follows:
The 2017 version of The Mummy was supposed to kick off a new cinematic universe at Universal Pictures – a Dark Universe that would consist of interconnected reboots of their classic monster properties. Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Creature from the Black Lagoon, they were all coming back, and they were all going to be crossing paths with each other. From Jekyll and Hyde to the Wolfman, to much more recent twists on atavistic transformations, the concept of shape-shifting has always been a popular one in fiction — with storytellers turning the dial up or down on the potential social commentary therein, according to taste and preference. In “Animale,” the closing film of this year’s Cannes Critics’ Week section, director Emma Benestan is rather more interested in the interpersonal dynamics navigated by 22-year-old female bull-runner Nejma (Oulaya Amamra) than in really savouring some promising horror implications. She gives Dr. Jekyll center stage, as it were, rather than getting too involved with Mr. Hyde.
Nejma works at a ranch in Camargue, France, where bulls are raised to compete in the arena for baying crowds of exhilarated spectators. It is a traditionally masculine environment: From the bulls to the men who wrangle them, the emphasis is on displays of physical strength and ferocity.

Shocking and resonant, disarmingly grotesque and weirdly fun, “The Substance” is a feminist body-horror film that should be shown in movie theaters all over the land. By that, I don’t mean that it’s some elegant exercise in egghead darkness like the films of David Cronenberg, or a patchy postmodern punk curio like “Titane.” Coralie Fargeat, the writer-director of “The Substance,” has a voice that’s italicized, in-your-face, garishly accessible and thrillingly extreme. She draws on much of the hyperbolic flamboyance that’s come to define megaplex horror. But unlike 90 percent of those movies, “The Substance” is the work of a filmmaker with a vision. She’s got something primal to say to us.
“The Substance” tells the story of an aging Hollywood actress-turned-aerobics-workout-host, named Elisabeth Sparkle and played by Demi Moore, who gets fired from a TV network because she is now deemed too old. In a rage of desperation,...

The royal wedding of Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles in 1981 was a spectacle for the ages. The couple’s lavish nuptials were watched by over 700 million people worldwide and appeared to be a Cinderella story come alive. However, the marriage was significant for breaking two remarkable royal traditions.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding ended over 300 years of royal tradition
In a break with tradition, Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding hosted their nuptials at St. Paul’s Cathedral. This venue choice was significant as the royal family traditionally held their wedding ceremonies at Westminster Abbey.
Before Diana and Charles’ nuptials, the last time a royal wedding took place at St. Paul’s was on Nov. 14, 1501. That ceremony was between Arthur, Prince of Wales, and Catherine of Aragon, who were each 15 years old at the time, per The History Press. The marriage lasted six months, as Arthur died after a long illness.

When Showtime premiered Penny Dreadful a decade ago, we altogether expected a grand monster mash-up. And certainly, series creator John Logan delivered just that over the course of the three seasons that followed. But he also gave viewers something that we couldn’t possibly have anticipated: a horror drama of uncommon depth and crushing beauty. It is for that reason that all these years later, we still can’t help but hope he’ll reconsider his decision to end the show after just 27 episodes with the death of Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives. The perils and plights of adolescence have long been a source of fascination for television audiences. That’s particularly apparent nowadays with Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Showtime, FX, and others vying for zeitgeist dominance with teen-focused dramas playing to a variety of creative strengths. As narratives have gotten more sophisticated overall across the TV landscape, it makes sense that the ways in which we look at stories about young people have also evolved. From “Never Have I Ever” to “Yellowjackets,” TV teens in 2023 are among some of the most rich ever written.

Netflix on Tuesday morning unveiled the series regular and guest cast for the upcoming second season of its hit Addams Family spinoff series Wednesday, headlined by Jenna Ortega.
As the announcement suggests — and Deadline has confirmed with sources — three Season 1 series regulars whose characters were alive and well in the finale — Percy Hynes White, Jamie McShane and Naomi J Ogawa — will not be returning in that capacity next season.
Of the three, only McShane is slated to reprise his Sheriff Donovan Galpin role as a guest star, likely to wrap the story of his character who was left devastated in the Season 1 finale by the discovery that his son Tyler (Hunter Doohan) was the Hyde after the sheriff shot and temporarily incapacitated the monster.
In the final minutes of the episode, Tyler was arrested but tried to escape by changing into a Hyde. His storyline will carry on as Doohan...

Earlier this month, Arkansas’ Pulaski County turned down and returned a $60,000 check sent by Lucky 8, the production company behind the Netflix docuseries “Unlocked: A Jail Experiment.” Pulaski County is where “Unlocked” was filmed, and Lucky 8 apparently intended the check as reimbursement for any costs the county incurred during production.
But in a letter sent alongside the returned check, county judge Barry Hyde wrote, “Pulaski County has no contract with Lucky 8. As such, Pulaski County must treat this check as an offered donation. Your donation is refused.”
This is not the first legal dispute to emerge surrounding the project, which took place at the Pulaski County Detention Center in 2023. Per Little Rock’s ABC affiliate Katv, the county’s quorum court in March issued an emergency ordinance requiring Sheriff Eric Higgins, who spearheads the “social experiment” depicted in the docuseries, to produce a report about the production of “Unlocked” — including...

But when the pair is fragmented by an untimely death, one twin is left alone without his “other self” by his side. The only question is—is he Jekyll, or is he Hyde?” (Yen Press)

In this new clip from the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, the Nightsisters face General Grievous and his droid army.
The battle pits the former Kaleesh warlord against the power of the Nightsisters. Will Dathomir Magic be enough to withstand Grievous’s ferociousness? We’ll find out starting on May 4th!
Admittedly, Grievous looks fantastic. The hulking cyborg Jedi-slayer is meacing, for the most part. There’s just something odd about General this time around.
Star Wars: Tales of the Empire does worry me a little. Ok, it’s Disney Star Wars, so it worries me a lot.
I’m glad the series will focus on characters who need some closure from Filioni’s earlier works, but what’s the deal with General Grievous in this clip? I know that in Dave Filoni’s Clone Wars, he’s way more talkative and cartoonish, but his appearance is off.

Hyun-su's body is invaded by a parasitic monster, which leaves him with superhuman abilities – but he is also locked in a constant struggle against his violent alter-ego.
What Happens in Parasyte: The Grey?
Mysterious alien creatures have begun arriving on Earth and inhabiting human hosts, which results in the hosts dying and turning into monsters.
One such host is grocery store clerk Jeong Su-in. However, after she is injured in an attack her parasite is unable to completely take control over her body. The two begin a totally unique co-existence,...

George Waggner's 1941 horror film "The Wolf Man" introduced audiences to, essentially, the "second officer" of the Universal Monsters canon. Everyone knows that Dracula is the captain of the monster ship, and that Frankenstein is his first officer (a position he often shares with the Bride). The Wolf Man is always third in command, perhaps serving as a security officer or an enforcer. Mummies, gillmen, invisible men, Dr. Hydes, and other ancillary ghouls serve lower down in the crew.
Watching the original "Wolf Man" film, however, reveals a dark and sad tale about Larry Talbot who is attacked by a wolf on a misty night in Wales, afflicting him with the curse of the werewolf. Throughout the year, Larry will transform into an animalistic wolf/human creature and stalk and kill random victims. The tale is terrifying and tragic and inspired many pop culture tales to follow -- as well as many nightmares.

1992’s The Lawnmower Man and 1995’s Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace are making their UK Blu-ray debuts.
Here’s an intriguing pair of 1990s features, that are being bundled together for their first ever appearance on Blu-ray in the UK. 1992’s The Lawnmower Man and its sequel, 1995’s Lawnmower Man: Beyond Cyberspace are both arriving in a new double pack.
The 1992 original in particular was really rather groundbreaking. Notwithstanding the fact that it was the film Stephen King went to court to get his name taken off (when he realised how little the resultant movie had to do with the book it was supposedly based on), The Lawnmower Man was also the first big screen virtual reality movie.
Not in an interactive sense, more in a strange shapes getting fruity with each other sense. It was quite a big screen experience too.

Netflix Korean drama series, Parasyte: The Grey is an official adaptation of the Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga series. Most people associate with this fandom because of the anime Parasyte: The Maxim, which aired in 2014. Many fans, like myself, were prepared to be disappointed by the Netflix adaptation, but then it surprised all of us and decided to come up with an original narrative instead. The plot in this live-action adaptation is based in South Korea and has its own characters. But quite obviously, there are parallels that the series draws as well. Moreover, the events of the Netflix’s Korean drama are set in the same universe as the anime. The events of the series may even run parallel to the events of the anime. In this article, we’ll be going through some of the differences that the Netflix adaptation has made from the anime.

It's well known to fans of "The Wizard of Oz" that actor Ray Bolger was originally cast to play the Tin Man and famed comedian Buddy Ebsen was cast as the Scarecrow. They swapped roles at Bolger's insistence, as Bolger had a personal attachment to the role; he was inspired to become an actor after seeing Vaudevillian Fred Stone play the part on stage when Bolger was a child. Ebsen was fine with changing roles, although he had to drop out of production due to makeup problems. The silvery Tin Man makeup contained powered aluminum and Ebsen breathed in big clouds of it, making him sick. At the time, many merely assumed Ebsen had an allergy. Ebsen was replaced with Jack Haley, and the makeup was altered to be a paste instead of a powder.

Stars: Eddie Izzard, Lindsay Duncan, Scott Chambers, Robyn Cara, Morgan Watkins | Written by Dan Kelly-Mulhern | Directed by Joe Stephenson
Eddie Izzard stars in this gender-flipped reboot of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic horror story. Produced by the resurrected Hammer Studio, it’s creepy and atmospheric, but altogether too restrained, when it should have been allowed to run riot.
A newspaper headline at the beginning of Doctor Jekyll states that “Trans CEO Nina Jekyll” (Eddie Izzard), the head of a large pharmaceutical corporation, has become a recluse, disappearing from the public eye due to health issues. In fact, she’s holed up at a lavish British mansion, where her no-nonsense housekeeper Poole (Lindsay Duncan) has been trying to hire a live-in care assistant to assist Nina with taking her medication and various other duties.
Enter Rob Stevenson (Scott Chambers) – and yes, his middle name is Louis – a young man who has recently served time in prison,...

Review: Founded in 1934, the Hammer film production company became very popular when it started releasing horror films in the mid-1950s. From that point through the early ‘70s, Hammer was one of the biggest names in horror… but then they found it hard to compete with the big horror films of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and things gradually fell apart for them. In 1979, the company went into liquidation. Attempts to revive the Hammer brand began in 2008, and we’ve seen some notable releases from the company in recent years: Let Me In, The Resident, The Woman in Black, and The Lodge among them.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Fire Country Season 2 Episode 2 “Like Breathing Again.”] “It was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Fire Country star Kevin Alejandro admits when it came to directing a scene in the latest episode: His character’s daughter, Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila), took on a dangerous cave rescue. Gabriela saved the victim and was fine … meaning she can now focus on what her father had to tell her after. Manny said that her mother didn’t abandon them, but rather, he was never there for her. And so he encourages her to invite her to her upcoming wedding to Diego (Rafael De La Fuente). Below, Alejandro takes us inside directing the episode, talks Manny’s new role at 42, relationships with Gabriela, Bode (Max Thieriot), and Sharon (Diane Farr), and more. Talk about directing Gabriela’s cave rescue. Kevin Alejandro: It was an adrenaline rush. I’d never directed anything like that specifically underwater.

Severin follows up their 2023 collection of Italian gothic titles with an essential second volume that brings together three films and a miniseries. Each work takes a very different approach to the gothic as both a visual aesthetic and a set of thematic preoccupations. The results range from virtually archetypal to resolutely revisionist. For this well-appointed set, Severin provides a veritable bounty of bonus materials: new restorations, alternate cuts, commentary tracks, cast and crew interviews, visual essays, even a soundtrack CD.
Antonio Margheriti’s Danza Macabra, from 1964, is one of the very best Italian gothic films. It simply oozes with atmosphere courtesy of Riccardo Pallottini’s moody monochrome cinematography, and, while the violence remains relatively restrained, Margheriti brazenly pushes the envelope when it comes to nudity and some suggestive sexual content. Likely as a bid to cash in on Roger Corman’s Poe Cycle, Danza Macabra not only claims to be...

Finnish filmmaker Mikko Mäkelä takes us into the shadow worlds of niche sexuality and queer sex work in London’s most sterile apartments and grayly desolate hotels in his new film “Sebastian.” This provocative, explicit, and ultimately tender drama stars newcomer Ruaridh Mollica as Max, a 25-year-old literary journalist writing a novel about a sex worker named Sebastian — and to get to the root of the thing, Max decides that he, too, must submerge himself in that very underworld.
As a psychological portrait of an aspiring writer who gets too immersed in his own project, “Sebastian” is never as piercing as star Mollica’s eyes and chiseled face. But the performance is affecting, and Mäkelä brandishes an ambient, lulling sense of style that evokes the loneliness at Max’s core. Internationally savvy gay film fans with a taste for the kinky and sad will want to check out this understated...

There is plenty in Sebastian, written and directed by Mikko Mäkelä, that is provocative. It’s a focused, often handsome piece of work. It’s also never entirely convincing as a character study. Max (Ruaridh Mollica) is a young, aspiring writer in London. He’s got a plum gig writing for a respected magazine and a short-story collection set to be published. Next up is his debut novel, and Max is determined to examine the inner life of the sex worker. To do this, he begins a double life: writer by day, escort by night.
Mäkelä is confronting questions of license here. To what degree does one need to embody that which they are writing about? If at all? Max––whose nocturnal pseudonym is Sebastian––clearly believes that in order to understand the subject you’re writing about your must immerse yourself. This decision will of course come with sacrifices...

Title star Jenna Ortega has talked about Wednesday season 2, which will contain ‘a little bit more horror’, she says.
Awards ceremony red carpets are a prime hunting ground for roving entertainment reporters, given that you can reliably collar a celebrity as they’re flustered and in a bit of a rush. Such is the case with Jenna Ortega, who was briefly interviewed by the snappily-named E! at the Emmys earlier this week.
When asked about the second season of Wednesday, the Addams Family spin-off series streamed by Netflix, Ortega said she’d received some scripts, and that “we’re definitely leaning into more horror.”
Elsewhere, Ortega added that the second series will be “bigger,” “more action-packed,” filled with “really good one liners” and that “each episode will probably feel a little bit like a movie, which is nice.”
Indeed it is. Wednesday’s first season, which premiered in November 2022, was...

Netflix’s hit TV show is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray and available to buy in the UK from 25th of March. You can pre-order yours here.
Wednesday was released on Netflix on 23rd November 2022 and was an instant hit. Critics and audiences praised Jenna Ortega’s take on the iconic character as well as the world building in general.
The series offered a rare look at what Tim Burton’s version of The Addams Family might have looked like. The central mystery was also full of intrigue and there was some pleasingly strange creature design as the titular anti-hero came across the monstrous Hyde monster.
In 2023, Netflix changed how they measure viewership.

“People ask me, where are all the great exploitation movies today? The low-budget horror films? They’re on the Lifetime Network!” Shudder’s horror host Joe Bob Briggs once said, and he’s not entirely wrong about that. There’s plenty of entertainment value to be found in Lifetime’s particular brand of thriller, and a new year brings along with it a brand new slate.

In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, directed by James Wan and written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Jason Momoa reprises his role as Arthur Curry, diving back into the deep and turbulent waters of superhero cinema. With an ensemble cast including Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park, Nicole Kidman and Temuera Morrison, the film navigates through a series of high-stakes conflicts, both personal and global. However, it’s not just the seas that are stormy; the film itself walks a messy path of narrative and visual execution.
Arthur aka Aquaman’s latest adventure kicks off with him recounting a daring hostage rescue to his son, Arthur Jr., followed by a montage of his life post-first film. As king of Atlantis and Queen Mera’s (Heard) husband, he navigates royal duties and family life, discovering his son’s unique ability to communicate with fish. Some of the movies we talk about have opinions fueled by nostalgia if they are good or reputation if they are bad. Of course, everything is subjective when speaking about how you feel about a movie. It can be tied to events in your life that make you happy or sad. You can enjoy it on the strength of an actor, writer, or director you enjoy being involved or hate it for those exact reasons on a creator not being your favorite. Some things are irrefutable though such as box office or critical appraisal. My friend Paul Bush, who has died aged 67 in a road traffic accident, was an experimental film-maker and film teacher. His film-making work focused on replacement animation, in which objects are replaced between frames, lending a magical instability to the physical world.
Paul’s first short film, Furniture Poetry, replaced pieces of furniture and fruit, but later he went on to replace actors, with his films Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Pas de Deux de Deux swapping out two pairs of protagonists between each frame of film, while keeping the action continuous.

So, believe me when I say that it's genuinely difficult to imagine a less appealing combination of words than the ones in the headline above and which I'm going to attempt to make sense of here. Hot off the divisive reactions and internet memes that followed the release of last year's "The Whale," visionary filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has apparently lined up his next project, and it's almost guaranteed to be even more controversial than anything the director has made yet -- which is saying a lot!
According to Variety, Aronofsky is once again teaming up with A24, this time to adapt a biopic of someone you've probably heard about once or twice in the last several months: the richest man in the world, Elon Musk. The indie studio reportedly won...

Robert Louis Stevenson’s horror novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a legendary story that has been spooking audience since the 19th century.
Now Hammer Horror returns to the big screen with a modern-day adaptation of Stevenson’s work, can it transform into memorable version of the story?
Directed by Joe Stephenson, Doctor Jekyll revolves around young Rob, a drug addict who has just been released from prison. Eager to prove himself and also to earn visitation rights to his dying daughter, Rob is sent to be a caregiver for the reclusive billionaire Doctor Nina Jekyll. As the two bond, Rob starts to suspect that there is something not quite right about his new employer…
Casting Eddie Izzard as the two-sided eponymous anti-hero is the cleverest aspect of this film. The actress is having the best time in this gender-bent exploration of Stevenson’s novel.
