Washington, D.C. — Kevin Hart was feted Sunday with the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize in a traditionally raucous affair that drew praise and flak in equal measure from a handful of comedic colleagues on hand for the occasion. The ceremony will air later this year on Netflix as part of the streamer’s multiyear deal with the Kennedy Center event.
Previous Twain honoree Dave Chappelle was on hand to salute the multifaceted entertainer whose standup comedic talents are matched by his prowess as film actor, producer, restauranteur and beverage magnate. So was Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Tiffany Haddish, among other friends and fellow comedians.
That extensive resume was ample grist for colleagues who trooped onto the Center’s Concert Hall stage as Hart and his family sat in a nearby box. The show concluded with the presentation of the award, a miniature Twain bust, by Kennedy Center chairman David Rubenstein.

Updated: Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-wy) has a succinct take on what’s wrong with American politics: “We’re electing idiots.”
Cheney, whose criticism of former President Donald Trump likely cost her her congressional seat last year, was interviewed at an event at the 92nd Street Y in New York on Monday by David Rubenstein, co-founder and co-chairman of the Carlyle Group.
He asked Cheney whether she would consider an independent White House bid.
She answered, “What we’ve done in our politics is create a situation where we’re electing idiots, and so I don’t look at it through the lens of, is this what I should do or what I shouldn’t do. I look at it through the lens of, ‘How do we elect serious people?’ And I think electing serious people can’t be partisan.”
She went on to blame the problem in part on the closed primary process.

Al Pacino sat down for a wide-ranging conversation Wednesday night in New York, touching on everything from his early days on The Godfather and his decision to turn down Star Wars to his views on retirement.
The 82-year-old star sat down with David Rubenstein as part of 92Ny’s “People Who Inspire Us” series for an hourlong chat, where he looked back on his career and revealed he is currently writing a memoir. “You get to that age, you start to do things like that. I stayed away from it, but I think I’ve got to sort of talk about certain things,” Pacino said. “It’s fine, I have kids and all, it’d be a good idea, and I’m working on it,” noting his co-author was in the audience.
Starting with his big break in The Godfather, Pacino first asked the crowd who had seen recent Paramount+ series The Offer,...

Steve Alten, author of Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and Meg: The Trench, has optioned an original football movie, Mr. Irrelevant, to producer David Rubenstein (1917), and his partners Ken Atchity and Scott Becher of Win-Win Partnerships (formerly producer/director NFL Films).
Billed as an inspiring tale of perseverance and unexpected second chances, Mr. Irrelevant follows the story of a 21-year-old college quarterback after the loss of his father leads him to bomb the tryouts on Pro Scout Day. But when an NFL head coach accidentally sees his potential, the young man gets the opportunity of a lifetime to make his late father proud and go from Mr. Irrelevant to starting quarterback.
“I set out to write an original underdog story with characters audiences could relate to while tapping into my own personal experiences,” said Alten. “Whether writing fictional thrillers like The Meg, or an original script like Mr.

Washington, D.C. — To the delight of a standing-room-only audience that included the First Family, the Kennedy Center Honors paid hearty tribute on Sunday night to actor-singer Bette Midler, opera bass-baritone Justino Diaz, Motown founder Berry Gordy, “Saturday Night Live” honcho Lorne Michaels and singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.
The event, last staged before a live audience in pre-covid 2020, had been conspicuously ignored by former President Donald Trump following criticism from two honorees in 2017. By contrast, President Joe Biden happily reinstated the tradition of hosting honorees at the White House before attending the production. He and First Lady Jill Biden were joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and husband Douglas Emhoff.
The wait by audiences was fully rewarded as the 44-year-old Honors program delivered a seemingly nonstop parade of A-list participants offering heartfelt tributes and rousing entertainment for the honorees gazing down from the president’s box. The show will air Dec.

David Letterman opened Sunday night’s Kennedy Center Honors by telling the audience in the Opera House, “Tonight, it is quite nice, very nice, to see the presidential box once again being occupied.”
The crowd cheered and then gave President Joe Biden a standing ovation, after which Letterman quipped, “The same with the Oval Office.”
The ceremony marked a return to the large-scale, lavish gala of tradition, as Covid-19 forced last year’s ceremony to be postponed and later scaled back. But it also was the return of the presidential seal of approval, after four years in which President Donald Trump did not attend or host a pre-ceremony reception at the White House.
Instead, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted honorees Justino Diaz, Berry Gordy, Joni Mitchell, Bette Midler and Lorne Michaels for an event in the East Room before the ceremony. The president gave Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live,...
