Not long before he died in 1984, photographer Milton H. Greene confided to his son, Joshua, that he’d once had a fleeting love affair with Audrey Hepburn.
It was the first Joshua, now 64, had heard of their long ago romance when both were starting out in their careers.
Greene, a legendary photographer known for his striking portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Cary Grant and many stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, met Hepburn in 1951, when she was just 22 years old and about to make her Broadway debut in Gigi. Marilyn Monroe is celebrated even to this day, 50 years after her passing, as an iconic beauty. But old photos reemerged recently that show the blond bombshell was gorgeous even before making it big in Hollywood.
The snapshots below show Monroe in 1944 when she still went by her real, non-stage name, Norma Jeane Dougherty. According to Gizmodo, Monroe worked in a factory in Van Nuys, Calif., during World War II when army photographer David Conover captured her on film. The rest, as they say, is history.
Earlier this month, 3,700 unpublished photos of the silver-screen siren were auctioned off with copyright and were expected to rake in between $1,000 and $15,000 each. Those were taken post-Monroe's rise to fame by fashion and celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene.

Profiles in History has announced the auction of more than 3,700 unpublished Marilyn Monroe images, as part of a larger collection of camera negatives and transparencies from the Milton H. Greene estate. Photographer Greene first encountered Monroe on an assignment for Look Magazine in 1953; the star was so overjoyed by the photos he took of her, that “she responded with two dozen roses and called to say they were the most beautiful pictures she had ever seen.” The two quickly became close friends. Monroe even lived with Greene and his family in their Connecticut farmhouse prior to her marriage to playwright Arthur Miller. Over four years of collaboration, Greene snapped Monroe in 52 different photographic sessions; the 3,700 images up for auction come from this period. Other high-profile celebrity images included in the larger collection include Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Kim Novak, Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. All images go up...

Warsaw, Poland -- Hundreds of photographs of Marilyn Monroe and other celebrities, including famous ones of the actress wrapped in a white fur coat, were being sold in an auction house in Poland on Thursday.
Bidders and spectators packed Desa Unicum house in Warsaw, where 238 pictures by the late American fashion and celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene were up for grabs.
The proceeds will go to the Polish government because the photos come from a collection of some 4,000 Greene pictures the nation obtained from Chicago businessman Dino Matingas in the mid-1990s as the result of a complex communist-era embezzlement scandal linked to the buy-out of Poland's state debt.
The collection was estimated at $680,000. Some of the images have never been published, the organizers said.
Other greats in the portraits include Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Liza Minnelli, Marlene Dietrich, Paul Newman, Alfred Hitchcock and Marlon Brando.

Warsaw, Poland -- Poland plans to auction off part of a photographic collection that includes hundreds of photographs of Marilyn Monroe.
The collection includes close to 4,000 photographs taken by the late celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene. Some are well-known images, but Polish officials say they believe the collection might contain some previously unpublished works.
The photos ended up in Poland's possession as the result of a complex embezzlement scandal that shook the country in the early 1990s. A Chicago businessman accused of cheating Poland out of millions of dollars gave the collection to Poland in partial repayment for the government's loss.
They have been stored in a New York warehouse for years and only arrived in Warsaw recently.
The Polish official in charge of cleaning up the lingering mess from the corruption affair, Marta Maciazek, said the photographic collection is valued at $680,000. She said some of the photos will go...

Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier, My Week with Marilyn Once upon a time, Kenneth Branagh was hailed as the new Laurence Olivier. Back in early 1990, Branagh was nominated for two Academy Awards for directing and starring in Henry V, an adaptation of William Shakespeare's play that back in early 1947 had earned Olivier a Best Actor nomination and an Honorary Award for "his outstanding achievement as actor, producer and director in bringing Henry V to the screen." More Olivier comparisons followed as Branagh went on to tackle Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Othello (1995), and Hamlet (1996). The latter two had served as prestigious Olivier vehicles: Best Picture Oscar winner Hamlet (1948) earned Olivier a Best Actor Oscar and a Best Director nomination; the originally made-for-television Othello (1965) received several special big-screen showings and ended up earning Olivier his seventh Best Actor Oscar nod. (Note: Olivier had the title role in Othello; Branagh played Iago...
