There are few personalities in gaming that can inspire fans to really make anything, like Hideo Kojima. In this case, the director of Alan Wake 2 and head of Remedy have confirmed his plans to collaborate with another prominent figure in the industry to establish a unique club.
Ben Starr, a voice actor in Final Fantasy, is teaming up with Sam Lake to form an unconventional vigilante group that seeks justice. The only requirement to join is to have an amazing surname; this could be the most peculiar and great collaboration in video game history.

Alan Wake 2 is an incredibly good-looking game. It shows how much work developer Remedy Entertainment put into this title. One thing that fans appreciated even more than its visuals was its story. This game is a prime example of how a narrative survival horror game should be presented to gamers. Juggling with two separate characters and still maintaining that fear factor can definitely be challenging.
Maybe that’s why it received universal critical acclaim upon its launch. It even ended up winning a bunch of awards. Remedy is pretty well known for making these kinds of games. Well-written, fun to play, and insanely good to look at, they have been leaders in making such complete packages. Now, it appears they are leading the way in yet another manner.

Alan Wake 2 developer Remedy Entertainment has fully acquired the rights for Control. Back in 2018, Remedy announced that they had partnered with 505 Games to publish Control. Given the recent success they had with their latest game, Remedy has also gained the confidence to take the helm of their franchise without the aid of third-party publishers. This bold move grants them full agency and for lack of a better term, control over the growth of their IP.
Among the benefits of independently developing any project is that there is no need for a committee with second or third-party organizations, it can be done with only the necessary personnel within the inner circle. Remedy can now focus on fleshing out new ideas on their own and this could potentially mean they can work twice as fast as they did with a publisher breathing down their necks.

McCaffrey’s death was confirmed on Monday by TMZ, who reported that a representative of McCaffrey informed them that the actor had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and passed on Sunday surrounded by his friends and family.
McCaffrey is perhaps best known for portraying detective-turned-vigilante Max Payne, but had a decades-long career that began in the late ‘80s with a direct-to-video film titled New York’s Finest. By the mid-1990s, he had appeared in several films and television shows, played the role of Captain Arthur O’Breun in the Fox series New York Undercover, and landed a starring part in a short-lived NBC series called Viper.

A New York native, McCaffrey’s star started rising when he appeared on the 1991-93 TV legal drama series Civil Wars. Those looking to jump back in to Alan Wake 2 to experience the New Game Plus mode can do so today. Announced during The Game Awards 2023, the New Game Plus mode, referred to as “The Final Draft”, allows players to not play Alan Wake 2 with all of their weapons, charms and player upgrades, but also introduces a new difficulty mode and a new ending.
“From the beginning, our plan was to create a New Game Plus mode for Alan Wake 2 as an essential part of the experience,” explains Remedy Creative Director Sam Lake via PlayStation Blog. “When we started working on the game and the story, the idea was always there. It made sense on multiple levels. We were creating a dense experience. It felt that there was enough to support multiple playthroughs for all the aspects of the story to sink in, and for all the collectibles to be found and pieced together.

Despite missing out on Game of The Year last night at The Game Awards, Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 still walked away with three wins. And to add an extra treat on top, Sam Lake and company announced that the long-awaited New Game Plus mode for Alan Wake 2 will arrive next week!
Called “The Final Draft”, the mode doesn’t just allow players who have already completed the game to run through Alan Wake 2 again, but actually includes a brand new ending. “The Final Draft unveils a new ending to the layered story of Alan Wake, sure to spark speculation and theories among our dedicated fans,” according to the blog post. “Additionally, there is new lore to be found in the form of a few new videos and manuscript pages that have been added to New Game Plus experience, along with other subtle additions.”

Since the decline (and apparent death) of E3, The Game Awards have become gaming’s biggest yearly event. While that’s partially due to the major reveals and announcements that have quickly come to define the modern era of the show, The Game Awards are obviously still about honoring the best games and creators of the year. So far as that goes, The Game Awards jury certainly has their work cut out for them this year.
After all, 2023 has been one of the best years in gaming history in terms of the sheer number of quality titles that have been released thus far. Not only have we been treated to a surprisingly high number of modern masterpieces this year, but those games cover such a surprising amount of ground in terms of their genres, style, and accomplishments. As such, it’s proving to be surprisingly difficult to even try to...

While it feels silly to point out that Alan Wake 2 is a horror game, much has been made of the transition from Alan Wake’s style of Action Horror to Alan Wake 2’s brand of more “pure” Survival Horror. In fact, quite a few people seem to be wondering if Alan Wake 2 will be too scary for them to enjoy.
That topic even came up during our recent interview with Alan Wake 2 directors Sam Lake and Kyle Rowley. The pair were well aware of the challenges of making a properly scary horror game that isn’t so effective that people end up not wanting to play it. That’s especially true for this sequel that is building upon a scary (but generally slightly more accessible) horror gaming experience.
So how scary is Alan Wake 2? Truth be told, it’s a walk through a slightly spooky park compared to the absolute scariest video games out there.

Alan Wake II is a sequel 13 years in the making. A lot of expectation comes with a wait of that caliber. Developer Remedy has attempted to make the long-awaited sequel numerous times over the past decade, from the spin-off Alan Wake’s American Nightmare to their Xbox exclusive game Quantum Break that began production as an Alan Wake sequel. Alan Wake II has clearly been on Remedy’s mind as much as it’s been on ours, and that labor of love and passion come through in the final product.
Alan Wake II is an absolute enigma of a game. At times it feels like a direct continuation of that story that ended 13 years ago, at times it feels like an absolute reboot that detaches itself for long enough to tell a standalone story, and still other times it feels like one of the most frightening horror games I’ve ever played.

I love horror sequels to a degree I can not always defend. Mind you, I’m not just talking about the ones that are generally considered to be great. On any given night, I will gleefully watch something like Amityville 1992: It’s About Time, Maniac Cop 2, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2, Pet Semetary 2, or pretty much any slasher sequel.
As I’ve tried to make sense of what it is that is so appealing about those sequels (beyond their individual charms), I’ve arrived at only one somewhat logical conclusion. Horror sequels are often, in their own ways, pretty bold. That’s even true of some of those “lesser” horror sequels. Armed with a small budget, a recognizable name, and little oversight, the directors and writers of those sequels ran with the rare opportunity to get their wild ideas on screen. That devil-may-care attitude often makes so many...

2010’s Alan Wake ends on a cliffhanger. After diving deep into Cauldron Lake to save his wife, Alice, from the Dark Presence that has consumed the town of Bright Falls, Washington, writer Alan Wake realizes something incredible. The power of a realm known as the Dark Place allows him to drastically alter his own reality using only his written words. So great is his ability to do so that he is even able to rescue both his wife and the town of Bright Falls simply by working away at his typewriter.
However, even Wake’s newfound powers have limitations. Despite his best efforts, Wake doesn’t seem to be able to free himself from the Dark Place. Instead, he elects to remain at the bottom of Cauldron Lake where he works on a seemingly neverending story designed to keep the forces of darkness at bay. Right before the credits roll,...

IGN continues to drop more Alan Wake 2 clips, with the latest 5-minute gameplay footage seeing Alan Wake meeting up with an old friend.
The clip sees takes place in The Dark Place, a nightmare version of New York, where Alan is currently trapped. He’s not alone, as Alan finds a familiar face in the jacket-wearing, paisley tie-sporting detective Alex Casey, the hero from Wake’s successful crime book series.
Despite being voiced by James McCaffrey and sharing the likeness of Remedy Entertainment’s Creative Director Sam Lake, Alex Casey is not Max Payne (though Max will be getting a revival soon). According to Lake, this version of Casey is “more over-the-top hardboiled” than before. Lake notes that this version of Casey is drawing from the same inspirations and his love for noir as Max Payne did, right down to an outfit “reminiscent of Brad Pitt’s character in the neo-noir film,...

“You left us on quite the cliffhanger,” teases insipid light-night talk show host Mr. Door, as he playfully admonishes his guest for the glacial pace of their output.
Said interviewee happens to be none other than pulpy crime novelist (turned unwitting adversary of evil) Alan Wake, who is more than a little perplexed by the rhetoric of the man sitting across from him.
Befuddlement, of course, is one of Alan’s defining traits and right now he is unable to figure out: A) how he got here in the first place; B) whether he’s already been through this pantomimic ordeal once before; or C) if the studio audience currently snickering away hyena-like in the darkness even exists. More importantly, though, he has no recollection whatsoever of penning another book.

Alan Wake shows itself to be scarier than ever in the sequel Alan Wake 2.
During what was dubbed Opening Night Live at big gaming conference Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, hosted by journalist Geoff Keighley, the Finnish company Remedy Entertainment unveiled a trailer featuring some gameplay snippets from the sequel to a horror video game released in 2010 and taking viewers to the dark place between CG and live action.
“In a horror story, there are only monsters and victims,” says a voiceover. “And the trick is to become neither.” This new, and grim, adventure follows beloved writer Alan Wake, who has disappeared and become trapped in a nightmare in the frightening town of Bright Falls, Washington, where he’s already had paranormal experiences in the first installment of the franchise.
Investigating his disappearance is FBI agent Saga Anderson, who finds herself embroiled in a series of unexplained events — a horror story written by Wake himself.

Developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Microsoft Game Studios, the video game Alan Wake begins with the narrator quoting a line that was written by Stephen King – and during an interview with Eurogamer, Remedy boss Sam Lake revealed that King only charged them $1 to use that line.
In case you’re not familiar with Alan Wake (as I wasn’t before seeing the article on the Eurogamer website), Eurogamer provides the information: Alan Wake begins with a sequence where we see the title character driving through the lonely countryside, over which we hear him deliver the following lines: “Stephen King once wrote that ‘Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there’s little fun to be had in explanations; they’re antithetical to the poetry of fear.’ In a horror story, the victim keeps asking ‘Why?’ But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn’t be one. The unanswered...

Stephen King‘s a pretty cool guy, if you didn’t know. Not only has the master author set up a program to allow students to use the rights to his novels for just a dollar, but Stephen King had also done the same dollar deal with Remedy Entertainment and Alan Wake.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Remedy’s Sam Lake recently revealed he had “really, really, desperately wanted” to be able to open Alan Wake with a quote from King himself. After all, there were so many references to the famed Maine author in the game, so why not go the extra mile?
Of course, Remedy did get that quote from King, and according to Lake, the developer just had to pay a dollar in order to use it. “It’s my understanding he wanted $1 for us to get the rights to use it. [It was] so very generous.”

With Alan Wake 2 finally getting that release date, you’re probably wondering about certain aspects of the game. Namely, the addition of a new character in Saga Anderson in Alan Wake 2 as a playable protagonist. No need to worry, as Gamespot has you covered.

While the number of truly great video game adaptations is tragically small, the fact of the matter is that there’s still a bit of a gold rush for familiar properties. As such, it seems that every studio and streaming service in the world is looking to adapt one video game or another.
Seriously, the number of video game adaptations currently in some stage of development is insane. You may occasionally hear about some video game adaptation popping up here and there, but it’s hard to fully grasp the extent of this movement until you see every adaptation listed in one place. AMC’s “Alan Wake” TV adaptation has brought on two new producers following the exit of its previously announced showrunner, Variety has learned exclusively.
Based on the best-selling video game of the same name, the potential series, which is in the very early stages of development at the cable channel, was originally set to have Peter Calloway serve as its showrunner when it was first set up at producer Contradiction Films in 2018. He has now stepped away from “Alan Wake,” which recently landed at AMC, due to conflicting project timelines.
Meanwhile, Jon Jashni, former president of Legendary Entertainment, and Jeff Ludwig, former vice president of scripted film and television production for Ritchie/Wigram Productions, have joined the drama as executive producer and producer, respectively. A search is currently underway for a new showrunner for the in-the-works show.

The annual Tribeca Film Festival will add a video game award to its lineup for the first time in 20 years, the organizers announced Thursday.
Tribeca Games, the new awards category, will begin accepting submissions in 2021 and honor “selections that demonstrate artistic excellence in storytelling” in a video game format. Games selected this year will be eligible to win the newly established Tribeca Games award and also will be included in the festival’s Now Creators Market, a private industry gathering that brings storytellers together with distributors, agencies and brands to pitch new projects.
Tribeca’s advisory board to oversee the award is led by a bevy of heavyweights in the gaming and multimedia entertainment industry, including gaming auteur and Konami Productions co-founder Hideo Kojima, who created the popular video game “Death Stranding.” Other panelists include filmmaker Nia DaCosta, director Jon Favreau, Electronic Arts co-founder Bing Gordon, Sam Lake, Kiki Wolfkill,...

From Sundance’s New Frontier program to the SXSW Gaming Expo to the sensation that Alejandro González Iñárritu caused in 2017 when he brought VR to the outskirts of Cannes, major film festivals the world over (and/or the organizations that contain them) now consistently offer robust sidebars devoted to interactive media. But when it comes to video games, the Tribeca Film Festival stands alone: No top-tier film fest has done as much to recognize video games’ unique storytelling potential, or been so committed to elevating the medium to its rightful place alongside the more “prestigious” arts.
Perhaps that’s because Tribeca Film Festival and Tribeca Enterprises co-founder Jane Rosenthal has a longstanding interest in video games (and even compelled Tribeca Interactive to produce one back in the ’90s). Or maybe it has more to do with the fact that Tribeca is the newest of the annual mega-festivals, and came of...

Tribeca Film Festival is expanding its focus on video games at next year’s planned fest in New York City: For the first time, Tribeca will open submissions for games to join the 2021 festival as official selections — and will bestow the inaugural Tribeca Games Award from the entries.
The festival also announced a new advisory board for Tribeca Games comprising luminaries from the games and film worlds. The members are filmmaker Nia DaCosta; writer-producer-director Jon Favreau, Electronic Arts co-founder Bing Gordon; the Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley; legendary game creator Hideo Kojima (“Death Stranding”); Sam Lake, creative director of Remedy Entertainment; and Kiki Wolfkill, head of 343 Industries’ Halo transmedia and entertainment at Xbox.
Tribeca’s move to make games part of the official festival comes after Tff has featured games and creators over the last several years, and as the worlds of cinema and gaming are increasingly blurring together, said Jane Rosenthal,...

In a recent blog post, Remedy hinted that their next project could help further the idea of a shared universe in their video games.
“For over 10 years, we’ve had a crazy dream,” says Sam Lake, Remedy’s creative director. “The idea that the tales told in some of our games would be connected to each other, a connected world of stories and events with shared characters and lore. Each game is a stand-alone experience, but each game is also a doorway into a larger universe with exciting opportunities for crossover events.”
Obviously, that statement could be interpreted as a bit of promotion for Control‘s upcoming Awe expansion which features Alan Wake. However, Lake goes on to suggest that expansion is really just the beginning of the studio’s more ambitious plans.
“What took place in 2010 in Alan Wake is one of the cases that the Federal Bureau of Control has been investigating,...

Control's story and tone draw from a new tradition of uncanny fantasy known as the New Weird.
This article contains spoilers for Control and Annihilation.
Control is not, director Mikael Kasurinen points out, a horror game, but the latest entry in the New Weird, a genre sitting in a debated space somewhere between science fiction, horror, and magical realism. It's in this space that the team at Remedy Entertainment created the game's unique atmosphere.
The game is set in the Oldest House, a shifting, rigorously mapped skyscraper that grows diseased like a human body. It is the base of operations for the Federal Bureau of Control, a mysterious government organization that investigates "paranatural phenomena." This is also the organization that stole protagonist Jesse Faden's brother, a setup that leads to the game's main conflict, as Jesse investigates the Oldest House while also protecting it from a supernatural invasion.
